I'm so close to buying a clevo p150hm :D, i'm in the uk and I don't want to buy it from the UK because of the 20% VAT (it makes a difference!!) nor do I want to buy it from the US because I have to pay for shipment if I had to return it. So I will be buying from Europe, i found deviltech and mySN and I have a few questions:

1- Devil 9800 DTX and XMG P501 PRO GAMING NOTEBOOK 39,6CM (15.6"), they're the equivalent of a clevo p150hm right??

2- I configured these two laptops to the same configuration and I got €1463 and €1438 for deviltech and mySN.de, respectively. It says 19% VAT included, will this be deducted since it will be sent to the UK?

3-What is: "DevilTech Integrated Wireless Card + Bluetooth"

    4-please suggest other Europe resellers

    thanks a lot

Edit: I just found this: VAT refunds for travellers departing from the European Community (EC) and this answers my second question, I'm leaving the UK in a few months and I do qualify for VAT refund, the reseller may not be operating the scheme though :( I will contact and see.

Kobalt and PCSPECIALIST offer the same config for £1225 and £1283 inc VAT.

    1) I'm not sure, I can't read german.

    2) Again...not sure. You can send them an email.

    3) That sounds like an intel 6230.

    4) I'd recommend PCSpecialist.

Is there any way, with software, etc.

To overclock the 2920xm in this machine?

I got my hands on a 2920xm OEM, and I was hoping I could try some things as to try and overclock via software.

Nope, it's a limitation of the chipset. You'd need the HM67 chipset like that in the P170HM to be able to overclock the unlocked CPU's.

    Ah,

I was going to try throttlestop, e-leet, etc.

To try and OC the 2920xm, but guess I'll be selling this one..

    Thanks for the clarification, +rep.

I'm getting close to purchasing this 8150, but wanted to ask for some wisdom. I couldn't find time to read through 300+ pages of posts, so sorry if it's a repeat question. just tell me to gtfo if necessary .

    1) Very generic, but is it a good time to purchase a 8150? it's been out for a year now or so? will clevo/sager bring out a new 'chasis' (if that's the word) for a high-end 15" notebook? or maybe better deals/sales will come out since the holiday season's around the corner? I've been keeping an eye out for a laptop ever since I first had to oven bake the 8600m nvidia card (spring of this year), so i guess waiting one or two more month(s) wouldn't hurt.

    2) right now, xoticpc has a special which reduces the price by $50 for '8GB - DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (4 SODIMMS)' rather than 2 sodimms. I wanted to ask if it was a good idea to get this and save some buck, and then later on, as i needed, replace them with 4gb memory cards. What spec memory would i need? something like this patriot or a 4 pack? . Is it preferable to swap them out all at once or ok to do it one by one? I figured buying them on my own is really cheap, relative to my college budget.

    3) is the radeon 6990m gpu the latest and greatest? i'm no graphics card guru so which (between the gtx 485m and radeon 6990m) is user friendly when it comes to updating drivers. I see on a ton of sites where there are comparisons, but I have no idea how to find out what's my best option. if there's no answer to this question, then I'm guessing I'll settle for the 6990 by default since i was screwed by the gt 8600m.

    4) and finally, if it isn't too much trouble, I'd like to ask for some opinions on how much you would price the spec i configured (based on your own opinion/estimate, not just at the seller's bottom line). Here it is:

    Sager NP8150 / Clevo P150HM

    1) There's no way to know the roadmap for sure, but here's what it looks like: Clevo doesn't usually produce brand new iterative replacements until there's new chipsets to do so. Ivy Bridge will be out sometime in the first half of 2012, so that's the best guess for updated models. GPU upgrades are typically iterative and can be added to current models (as was the case for the 580m/6970m/6990m when they were released). I wouldn't count on something replacing the current models for a while- at least until Ivy Bridge, most likely.

    2) If you plan to go beyond the RAM provided with 4 sticks, I'd recommend going for the 2 sticks in your initial configuration. That way when you upgrade you aren't having to get rid of perfectly good RAM to add more in. 4 sticks would completely fill all the slots. You can always add more RAM later by yourself, but it's still better not to have to get rid of extra.

    3) The rankings are generally like this: 485m > 6970 > 6990 > 580m. The difference between the 485m/6970 is maybe 2-5%, the jump from 6970-6990 is about 10% and the 6990-580m is another 3-5%. The 580 is best, but the 6990m is the best in terms of price per dollar.

    4) The specs look good, as long as you know you will have an empty optical drive bay (You didn't add an HDD to that bay, so it's currently empty in that config). Otherwise, if you're just planning on gaming on that machine it should work out nicely. If you want to run CPU intensive tasks, I'd suggest an upgrade to the 2760, but it's not strictly necessary.

 Thanks Malibal #2, that was a lightning fast response!

    1) this settles my anxiety to wait for the new lineup of models. I probably won't have the dough to get the newest anyways, especially with new chipsets. i can settle...

    2) The 4X2gb ram is $50 off. if i get the default 2X4gb, wouldn't i have to worry about compatability issues when i purchase for the other 2 slots? I was intending on buying 4X4gb and throwing the 2gb's to my buddies who always complain about their name brand laptops being slow and getting a few brews in return. But what i intended on asking about he ram was what types of specifications I should be looking for for when I buy replacements/upgrades. I know its DDR3 1333MHz dual channel, but whether it'll be 204 or 240 pin, pc3-10600 or 10660 or 10666, or any other crazyness.

    3) i've been told the 6990 had the best value, so I'll most likely keep with that. I've never had an ati gpu before, are the drivers difficult to get relative to nvidia?

    4) Yeah, i know i have an empty optical bay slot. I was going to keep it empty until I save up enough for a proper ssd and then replace my primary with it, then switch the hdd to the optical bay. I have a few spare hdds, so that's no issue.

as far as intensive tasks... I intend on gaming ocassionally, do 3-d modeling (solidworks, cad, etc..), and light-medium use of commercial simulation software (cfd related). and of course, have multiple browsers opened up along with 20 pdf documents, 50 word/excel documents, things downloading, music playing, and all that shenanigans.

thanks again, I sincerely appreciate your opinion on this.

For the RAM, it looks like you were considering the 1333 RAM. For future upgrades, just sticking to more of the same DDR3 1333 will work fine. DDR3-10600, 10660, and 10666 are all 1333 so compatibility won't be a problem. Heck, you could even just bump up to 1600Mhz RAM later if you really wanted to. If you're planning to just replace all the 2GB sticks and give them away, then the only real issue you'll have is getting to the 2 slots under the keyboard to change that RAM out (it's not hard, it's just more involved than the two slots under the bottom panel).

AMD and Nvidia drivers are both just download and install, there's no trick to it. I prefer Nvidia myself, but really it just boils down to personal preference more than anything.

I'm not sure what 3D modeling and commercial software would require, but I presume it's more GPU heavy than CPU. The 2630 is pretty powerful. so unless you plan to virtualize or run heavy duty encoding/decoding, you probably don't need the upgrade to the 2760.

    1 - Yes.

4 There is also Nexoc, NEXOC - mobile systems

Between Deviltech and mySN I would recommend mySN.

What does Clevo have against backlit keyboards? A backlit keyboard would make the P150HM perfect for me. But as with all things, nothing is perfect. I'm still getting one, just wish it had a backlit keyboard. :(

Thanks for that RAM clarification. Now that you mentioned it, I did not realize 2 slots are under the keys and 2 are accessible in the bottom like usual. I'm now contemplating on just keeping the default 2X4gb sticks. If I do go this route, the price with Malibal is pretty close to what I have configured for another site, so I will definitely call them up or you (if you work for Malibal) and talk about further details. I'm pretty pleased with how fast and straight forward your response was.

Hey Mr. Mysterious, can you link me to that FAQ you created? I think my questions have been answered; now it's all internal conflicts going on.

I've thought about waiting for that backlit keyboard as well, since the new posts just reminded me of it. I'd definitely wait and extra half-year for backlit keys as well as that ivy... but there's no guarantee on how many times I can keep tearing my old 2092 apart just to throw that nvidia card in the oven...

this forum's awesome. I only know one person personally who has a clevo/sager laptop.

Hi, everyone. Going to be ordering an NP8150, probably the day after tomorrow, and I have a few questions.

    1. I watched a YouTube video and it really seemed to attract a lot of dust. Does it really get that dusty or is it just an illusion?

    2. I heard the trackpad had WAY too much friction- again, fact or myth?

    3. Here's my configuration:

    - 95% NTSC Color Gamut Glossy screen
    - GTX 580M
    - 2820QM (I guess the 27 would be fine, but since my budget is higher- why not?)
    - Stock Thermal Compound (I heard IC Diamond doesn't do anything)
    - 8 GB 1600 Mhz (I wanted to get 12 GB but I heard it would only slow down my computer because the RAM slots would be filled unevenly- is that true?)
    - Default Optical Drive (no need for Blu-Ray I guess)
    - Bigfoot Networks Killer (does it really do anything?)

I know the 6990M is more powerful and $300 less than the GTX 580M, but I really need that card because one of NVIDIA's awesome demos (Supersonic Sled) relies heavily on PhysX and CUDA (and besides it will only run on NVIDIA cards) so I have to get NVIDIA, and 485M would just be too slow for that Supersonic Sled. Is there a big noticeable difference between the 485M and the 580M, though?

@Baloney From my experience it is a pain using trackpads that are not made from Apple. I played with my friend's NP8150 trackpad and found it reasonably comfortable, not too responsive like my macbook air, but perfectly usable nevertheless. if I were to use this laptop, I would stick with my beloved mouse and disable the trackpad altogether anyway. As others have stated, going for 580M will benefit you when playing 3D titles or games with heavy tesseliation (in laptop realm at least), the 485M can do it just fine as well, but from what I've seen, Clevo doesn't supply us with 3D capable lcd screen so playing games in 3D on this laptop is out of the question.

I haven't seen or heard of this "Supersonic Sled". Is it a game or a tech demo? I will check it out when I get home from work. This is my first post at NBR, and I'm leaning toward NP8150 laptop too, hopefully I will join the rank soon after pay day. Please pardon my English, I'm not a native speaker. Peace.

P/S: Killer Bigfoot Network does not improve anything in everyday use in my humble opinion.

I received my P150HM a couple weeks go, so I can't really comment on the dust yet. I thought the trackpad had way too much friction at first, but it seems to get smoother quickly. Maybe I just got used to it. I'm not too crazy about the keyboard layout, however. The 10key is nice, I suppose, but I still can't quickly find the arrow keys and home/end keys without looking down. But coming from a Thinkpad keyboard, this is an expected tradeoff.

You may not see it, but the benches are pretty clear, it wipes the floor with Intel's cards. It's especially helpful for automatically prioritizing bandwidth.

Basically speaking. The Killer software does some QoS (Quality of Service) among other things that help prioritize traffic that is heavily impacted by latency (like gaming).

    1. it does attract dust, but it is easily wiped off.
    2. imho, the rubberized trackpad is ok and gets less rubbery in time. i actually like using it, and use it for such applications as photoshop and my video editing suite. the buttons are a little hard(to press), but not really a big deal.
    3. i also get nvidia for cuda support. if i was just purely gaming id stick with amd. i dont know the price of the 580 vs 485 but my philosophy is to generally get the best technology that you can afford at the moment of purchase.

    hope that helps :)

    1. It does attract but it is easier to wipe off then the ASUS G series rubberized in my opinion.
    2. Most comment that they like the touchpad.
    3. Looks like a good configuration overall. Having 12GB would not slow you down. The Bigfoot is a good choice, it is becoming more and more popular.

Good luck in your research! :)

Wait, this is the rubberized one, isn't it? In the YouTube video they said it had a rubberized finish.

Sorry what I meant to say it was easier to clean then the more mushy rubberized like on the ASUS G series notebooks. (edited above)

Hi there, not sure if this question was asked already but what are the approximate benefits of the new Ivy Bridge chipset? And since I'm planning on buying a P150HM around the end of the year, would it be worth it to wait for its release? Also, how would it be priced compared to the current Sandy Bridge processors?

    Thanks for your help.

Judging by past tracks of Intel,

Each processor with its distinct relative rank will be priced equally.

    820qm = 2820qm = 3820qm

If you are going to buy at the end of the year, might as well wait, its rumored that Ivy bridge will come at Q1 of 2012.

We just do not know what the end of the year will bring as far as prices. What is more there is no real ETA for any new model or upgraded chipset releases.

So if you would like to wait this is up to you, it may be a good idea in your case. :)

Justin@XoticPC, I would like to buy an Np8150 from your website. Do I get any special deals or promotions or warranties or things like that? Do I have any benefit over buying directly from Sager? Also, there's an option to remove all branding. What's branding? Is it the stickers or the product logo?

Dealing with resellers is more favorable in terms of RMA and services.

Each reseller offers different promotions so you may want to ask around for specific extra discounts as of this moment.

Removing branding is removing the product logo, the "Sager" mark is removed if you select the option.

You can choose to have it or not to have it installed. If you order Windows 7 with your machine you will get 2 DVD's. One 64bit and one 32bit in case you want to reinstall it later. :)

So... how much extra do I have to pay for an OS? And what OS is it? 7 Home Premium, I guess. And, I didn't see any option for OS on the Sager website.
