Do you have more information on 7900M/7800M ? I like the P150HM but for now im a bit confused if its worth waiting for 600m series / 7000m series before getting the laptop i want.

Is anyone using the P150 (NP8150) with dual external monitors? Care to share how the experience is?

Also is anyone using the Dell U2711 with this laptop? How's the experience?

I'm using my P150HM at home to drive dual 23" 1080p 120hz monitors. It works fantastic that way. I just keep it on a cooling pad with the lid open just a crack to keep it cool (as dual monitors raise the clocks on the GPU). The color gamut on the external monitors isn't quite as nice as the upgraded on board screen, but they've got better quality in most other respects.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Interesting, didn't realise keeping the lid cracked a little would aid in cooling.

I'm thinking of picking up a P150HMA (with 6990) along with a Dell U2711. Would run both my current LG 24" E2441 and the Dell U2711 off the laptop. The HP Envy 15 is getting on a bit.

Yeah, I'm sitting here trying to make my mind up. The Envy 15 cost me a lot of money when I bought it nearly two years ago now. It's only just recently that it's starting to struggle a bit with games. BF3 still runs, but not so great. Been eyeing up the P150HMA, so nice, quite cheap as well considering the performance. Alienware out here in Australia are a rip off (plus they look like they were designed for 12 year old's).

Do I wait for the Clevo refresh, or bite the bullet now, knowing that my CPU & GPU will be out of date in 3 - 4 months?

Maybe wait till clevo introduces its new models but get the available model 2720/580/6990 instead of the new one.
Your sure to get it at a hefty discount and the new models will be nothing more than an incremental increase in mhz. Do this unless some new technology like ssd caching or backlit keyboards are important to you.

Today AMD has officially announced that the next-gen mobile GPUs will come in Q2, while Intel has also said April/May at the earliest for Ivy Bridge, and Nvidia is possibly even later to the party.

So I wouldn't expect to see Clevo release a new machine before then, with so much in flux.

I do not know how to HD6990M, but the HD6970M does not support Dual Link (Dell U2711-2560x1440, U3011-2560x1600). Dell U2711 (and U3011) are poor. :( Better to think about NEC's monitors.

It can be scratched as easily as any other laptop surface (plastic, etc), so it's better to be careful with it if possible. Some keep their machine in notebook sleeves when not in use to protect it. I've never seen the finish peel off though.

But let's say it peels off, will it be the same look as the 8130?
What I'm trying to say is, if it ever starts peeling off, can't I just peel the whole thing off and reveal that layer which is the same as the 8130, because to me, the 8150 provides the rubber layer as a protection/look thing.

It shouldn't ever peel off- or rather, I've never seen or heard of that happening. If it were to happen, I don't think the case underneath is going to look too pretty anyway. (Nowhere near as good as the clean exterior of the P151HM1 anyway)

Thanks for this info. Was under the impression I'd have no issues running the Dell U2711 and my LG E2441 24" off the P150HMA with Nvidia 485M or 6990. Anyone care to share?

Thanks for that Dark5. Had a look on the Sager website, says that both the 485M and the 580M have the dual DVI link capability.

Then found this on page 36 of this thread.

Ok, so I want to be quite sure here as I am thinking of picking up a Clevo P150HMB with the Nvidia 485M. Will this laptop with the 485M enable me to run a Dell U2711 off the Dual DVI link at the back, and a LG E2441 LED monitor off of the HDMI port with the laptop screen obviously off? Sorry if the question seems stupid, just want to be sure.

Yes, you need the AMD Radeon HD 6990M 256bit w/2GB GDDR5 heatsink. You cannot use the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 192bit w/1.5GB GDDR5 heatsink with the 6990M

Yes, you will need the 6990 heatsink. If you buy the card from most parts retailers, they should sell you the card + heatsink together anyway.

Hello everybody, I was hoping to get some input on other people's current battery wear?

I was sitting at about 8% a month ago, but upon checking today I'm at 16%. The weird thing though is that I've barely run the laptop on battery due to the fear of wear on the battery 0_o.

Batteries are usually good for about 1.5 to 3 years. Just sitting they degrade, and they degrade through charging cycles as well.

8% in about a month wouldn't be that unusual, particularly if 'about' a month was actually 6 weeks ... or ???

Hello everyone, I'm new here and I have a question that I was hoping I could get insight into:

I'm about to buy a 8150/P150HM but I'm concerned about the horrible oversaturation caused by the wide gamut (95%) matte screen in certain (non-colour managed) applications, specifically VIDEO GAMES. I know this is a common issue for wide gamut screens but I was wondering if anyone has tried going into the Catalyst Control Center (AMD), under "My Digital Flat-Panels" and the "Display Color" option for the monitor.

In this section there is a tick box to "Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID)" which I have found out apparently resolves the saturation issue by explicitly telling the graphics card that the monitor has a wide gamut and therefore allowing the graphics card to accommodate for such when it sends the image to the monitor.

I've heard that for some people, this resolves entirely the oversaturation issue in one simple step.

Can anyone with a wide gamut display confirm this, try it themselves or ask someone else that has one to? If this actually works (and works well) for the wide gamut displays it would make me the happiest man on Earth. I can't actually get the standard matte display from my Australian reseller, and I'd much prefer a functional wide gamut one anyway.

P.S. If you've been stuffing about with other calibration before you try this it might not look right, perhaps ensure you try it with stock color settings?

I've got a barebone right now, trying to assemble. Questions:

    1) I don't want to disconnect default keybo (DE, also have ENG, but DE have more keys and proper Enter), so my 3G module is free. Can I use 3G module to plug Wi-Fi module? Are they the same?

    2) Since the DE keybo looks more sexy, can I somehow to disassemble some keys from ENG and to replace some of them on DE?

    ---

Cancel first question. It's fit but not possible to hold. So I've removed keybo pluged it in and attached 2 connector for antenna (don't have module for 3rd).

Awesome I'd appreciate this tons as I'm waiting on this to purchase my own.

I think the three main areas where color can independently go wrong are:
    - On the windows desktop including buttons and icons
    - Web browsing, especially on IE or with unmanaged images such as photos of friends on Facebook
    - In a full screen program or game without color management (virtually all games, but don't try crysis, it supposedly has it)

It would be awesome for the AMD solution to work for these three things but there is very little information available about it on the Internet. Otherwise I'd like to know if there is at least an sRGB color profile for the screen that makes it act like a regular 60% gamut screen.

Tell me all about your screen when you get it dark5, I'd love to hear :p

Sure thing! It's funny cause Crysis was going to be the first game I tried. <_<

I also have Bioshock so I'll try that. I never browse with IE (I don't even attempt to develop websites to be compatible with it anymore) but I'll see if it's a problem with images in Chrome or Firefox.

Edit: not un-boxing laptop until tomorrow.... ugggghhhhhhhhh.

Is anyone here having trouble with the Intel 6230, connecting to university networks? I've tried to connect to eduroam as well as the uni's old network with no luck (no problems with my smartphone). Also, I have trouble trying to update my drivers for the 6230. If I download drivers for the 6230 directly and try to install them, I am given an error message which says something about "In the control panel, below national settings and language settings, set the language for Format and for programs which don't support Unicode so that they correspond and then restart the installation" (this is translated, I don't know the exact phrasing in English). However, I can't find anything like that "national settings" in the control panel.
If I try Intel's "Automatically identify and find drivers" it can't even identify my networking card! It simply says that "This device is unknown or unsupported. Please contact the manufacturer for possible updates".

Your fix works! The display is definitely oversatured in Windows 7 out-of-the-box but it looks like this completely fixes it. I haven't tested it out in any games yet but it works for the desktop, pictures and videos so it should also work for gaming.

In all honesty, I really regret getting a Macbook Pro. It was definitely not worth the cost premium. I got used to OS X and even did a lot of Objective-C development in Xcode. In the end, I really prefer the Windows and Visual Studio combination. And, of course, I chose a Sager cause I wanted easy customization in my next laptop.

Yeah I was strongly considering a Macbook September of last year, but as good as they look and feel, I was not happy paying a massive premium for lesser spec's. Plus I don't know how to use OSX, I find W7 quite good, and more than enough for my needs.

That's awesome dark5! I'll just wait for you to compare on-and-off in games if you don't mind and then I'm sold on the screen.

Perhaps this needs it's own thread as a solution for those who have been complaining about color on the 95% screens (for ATI at least).

    Edit:
Did I mention I'm buying the laptop on sale and it ends tomorrow? :D

Yep. Works fine in games. Even in Crysis. Here are some (crappy phone) pics:

The difference is more apparent in person as it looks more oversaturated without EDID but at least you can see that using the EDID option works.

I think Prema was working on a modded BIOS, but I'm not sure if he's still on it or not.

I tried helping him with CPU overclocking, but the BIOS had a lockbit that reset all the changed values to stock on reboot.. So we gave up. ;)

Is the BIOS of the P151HM1 (techinically the same board as the P150HM) supporting UEFI boot? If so, I'm planning to use GPT for my OS SSD then.

I take it you're located in Australia? Did you buy the laptop from affordable laptops? They had a pretty good sale going on, I just took the plunge as well. Couldn't wait till April/May time, too long, plus the current hardware is pretty good anyway!

What spec's did you end up getting?

    Yeah I am and I did :)

    • 6990M
    • 95% gamut matte screen
    • No OS (as I'm starting a Bachelor of Computer Science at Monash this year I can a free copy of Windows 7)
    • i7-2760QM
    • 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
    • 256GB Crucial M4 SSD
    • Blu-ray reader & DVD burner
    • Intel Advanced-N 6230
    • Spare battery
    • 3 year pickup and return warranty

I was thinking the same thing as you, and I especially couldn't wait until May because I'd be going without a laptop for 2-3 months at uni (and I'm living on campus there, so I need my own PC :))

    Nice specs!

You'll definitely be happy with the 95% screen. I've been screwing around with the settings in the Catalyst Control Center to see if I can get it to look *perfect*. Of course, I can't without a calibrator like the Spyder but it's always fun to mess around with settings. And then I compare it to my old MBP or my sister's new VAIO and it looks so SO much better.

One thing, though, is that the viewing angle isn't that great. Or, rather, there is color shift within about 30 degrees of the optimal angle. Not a big problem but worse than my old MBP (though much better than the VAIO). It's actually not really noticeable unless it's showing really light colors. Ignoring the color shift, you can actually view the screen really well until about 80 degrees.

I'll live with the viewing angle :), as long as it looks awesome front-on.

The 95% NTSC Color Gamut Matte LCD screens are indeed awesome. There are so many more colors displayed, and they really pop!
