The standard remains the same and you should be able to get a free upgrade to the new boards/cards...talk to your company rep. :)

they're jumping to a new generation of processors as well as backlit keyboards. I purchased through xoticpc and they seem pretty awesome thus far. Honestly, I need the laptop for school so I can't really afford to delay much longer but looking for a processor upgrade later is probably going to not be fun. are we able to undervolt our processors on the np8170?

I have a question about the Clevo P170HM. I'am looking at buying a used one from someone I know, It has a i7-2720QM, 8 GB Ram, and a single Nvidia GeForce GTX560M. It supports PCIe x16, and MXM3.0 type B.

My question is, with thoes supports, can I install a 2nd GTX560m to run in SLI???

Also it supports HDCP. I understand it has something to do with copy-right protection for HI-Def ( blueray ) playback at 1080P. Now does that mean I can view copy-right material, or does ' supporting HDCP ' mean I can't view it???

The P170HM only supports 1 GPU, so no, you can't.

I've never really followed laptop chassis upgrades before--what kind of improvements do we expect with the replacement for the NP8170? I see that the NP9270 basically got a desktop processor, and the possibility of 580M SLI. But unless you're getting 2x 580M, it seems like you're paying about $1k extra for the processor alone (and some extra RAM)? Am I missing anything?

I'm looking at getting a NP8170, and would like an idea of what upgrades the replacements would have (based on history), as well as how much of a premium I'd be paying. I assume I won't be able to get the replacements for $1500-1600 like I can with the NP8170 now?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

    Hi guys,

Just wanted to check, can I set up a RAID volume on SATA port 1 and port 2(ODD)? I plan to install a SSD on the SATA port 0, then use my two 500GB HDDs in that configuration. Thanks!

are you looking at a SATA-II SSD? if you are you would be better off placing it in the ODD and putting the others in your 0 and 1 port, I dont think that raid will work the other way around, the way you meant it to be (might be wrong)

Hi guys i just recieved my 8170 a few days ago. When i use the fn+1 function the fans work weirdly. they are not constant. there are pauses in between like the fans slow down just for a second and this keeps on happening. Is this normal? Also while gaming is it safe to keep the fans on at this speed (fn+1) THROUGHOUT my gaming session? I sometimes even game for 4-6 hours straight so .....

my fans doesn't seem to slow down (or if it does not to the point like i pressed fn + 1 again), I'm guessing fans like these running for 4-6 hours a day would be fine but of course with all moving parts there's a higher chance of wear and tear involved.

The pulsing is normal and just a byproduct of how the pc does fan management. Now running them full on for that long every day. Is it safe? Yes but of course you will have increased wear and tear

    Hey,
I am interested in buying a NP8170 in the next few weeks and have noticed that it is only available with the AMD card at the moment. If I have read correctly, the new models are coming out next week, and I hope that means that Nvidia cards will be available again. Also, I was thinking of ordering it form Sager itself, or are any other sites recommended? Does anyone think or know that the starting price will go up again, because the $100 off over $1500 purchase also caught my eye.

    Thanks

The latest is that no NEW models will be released (for shipping) this month.

There also will be no NEW Nvidia cards released (for shipping) this month.

So if you need a laptop THIS month then just go with the current lineup...If you would like to that is.. :)

It's possibly overheating. Have you checked your temps at all recently? You may need to clean out the fans.

Otherwise, it's potentially just a fluke. If it doesn't happen again then it might not be worth worrying about.

I'm not a sager reseller but from my experience with dealing with warranties as a geek squad agent a few years ago, they will either repair your laptop or replace it with something equivalent or better. No one wants to alienate a customer base and if they didn't do at least this, no one would purchase the extended warranty

You will be covered for the full length of your warranty. Keep in mind Sager computers only have a shelf life of around 1yr other brands like Asus or MSI are even less with around 3-6 months. So most the time when you do need warranty/service the computer is EOL anyway. But it is always going to be taken care of.

The part that will need to be fixed will still be attainable.

this post is just for myself, to make sure I do everything correctly ;) and to see people's opinions and if I need to change/add something else..
Well, previously I wanted to order np8180 but because it was phased out, and after I've seen how big the charger is(300W) I changed my mind to 8170.. and thats where I came up to:
    -17.3" 1920 x 1080 FHD LED AUO B173HW01 V.4 90% NTSC Glossy Display
-Spyder 3 Elite Professional Color Calibration w/ Profile Disc
    -Intel® Core™ i7-2760QM, 6MB L3 Cache, 2.4-3.5GHz
    -(12GB) 12288MB, PC3-12800/1600MHz DDR3 - 3 SO-DIMM
    -NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M 2GB GDDR5
    -60GB Intel® (520) SATA III 6Gb/s SSD2 Drive <= I've been told that this is something.. good, i guess :)
    -750GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA 300 Hybrid w/ 8GB NAND Flash
    -Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1103 802.11A/B/G/N LAN Card
-IC Diamond 7 Thermal Compound, CPU & GPU

So thats pretty much it. Want to hear what people say about it, and if its all cool, I will order it on monday ^^

Awesome specs but i read somewhere that hybrid drives have more drawbacks than benefits (e.g. reduced lifetime).
You already have a ssd drive as a primary hard drive so why not just go for the 750gb hard drive as the second hard drive, it will save you money.

That's just what I have to say, the desicion's up to you. Good Luck!

I'd second going back to a standard HDD for the secondary drive. The hybrid drive only offers a benefit in the secondary position in a small handful of cases. For the vast majority of users, it's not worth the added cost, especially when you've got an SSD primary.

Take the money you save on getting the standard HDD for the second drive and put that towards a bigger primary SSD. 60GB will fill up quicker then you think.

    For example - 1TB 5400rpm 2.5" SATA 300, right?
    Also, is it worth upgrading it to Intel® Core™ i7-2860QM, 8MB L3 Cache, 2.5-3.6GHz ?

How is that gonna make any difference, I'm not sure.. I thought that it would perform well anyway, even if its full..

With SSD its normally recommended not to fill them up and leave about 10% unused. Now take a 60GB which will end up being ~56GB in Windows (Decimal to Binary conversion) then you install Windows 7 that will take 10-15GB depending on settings leaving you ~41GB of space. Once you start installing programs and maybe a few games you'll run out of space quickly. 120GB is a good size to go with.

I haven't read this whole thread yet, but as I am mostly a lurker, I guess I'll break my forum cherry and ask (since I just ordered but haven't received yet) about cleaning my 8170 from XoticPC...

Does anyone have a link to a detailed break down of this model?

Im both curious about what the inside of the thing looks like, and would also like to know what panels to open/best way to clean out dust in the fans when the time comes.

Yep, the 1TB would be a better benefit and will give you more space in general. A 120GB SSD + 500GB HDD is what I run in my laptop and it's a decent trade off.

The 2860QM probably isn't worth it unless you do a lot of CPU intensive work, where every clock cycle counts. If you just plan to game or do mainstream work, the 2760QM is the sweet spot in price/performance.

Sure, here's a service manual for the laptop (thanks to Theriko):

Isn't it recommended to always leave 10% of the space unused? I've always heard that it might make the storage worse if you don't.. although never seen or heard of any proof :(

I've heard that as well, but never seen proof. The "extra space" that SSD's generally need to do garbage collection and the like is already usually overprovisioned into them. For example, if it ships to you with 120GB, it may be a 130-140GB drive with that last bit hidden and used for the drive functions.

That's as sad as it gets. If you count the amount of space lost thanks to decimal to hex conversion and the amount of space you have to save to make the drive work "better". That's quite the amount of space.... damn

Why is that sad, it is just the way it is.....Cars makers used to advertise horsepower using what is now called gross hp. This did not account for the actual hp delivered to the rear wheels due to losses from the actual exhaust system used, friction losses due to the actual air cleaner system used, and friction losses due to the actual accessories running on the belt system. Net HP is akin to "useable capacity" in a hard drive

This is no different, no need to be depressed about it my friend!

Same goes for updates to the machines we all love. We are near the leading edge of laptop capability, these boutique machines will quickly begin to use the latest & greatest components. As soon as we get our lappy, we soon read a news release (many times right here on this Forum) about a new card about to be released.

This is the "price" of being near the bleeding edge n'est-ce pas?

I accept and actually embrace this fact. Think what it would mean if what I posted was not true! Boring machines.....

Have you tried repasting the thermal compound? same thing happened to me 3-4 months after getting my lappy (not sure if it was a bad pasting job from sager, or the high ambient temps from where I am or just bad luck lol)

temps on idle/minimum load at 55-60's and reaching 90's when gaming.

Bought a p170hm few weeks ago, after it arrived for about 2 days, I played with some games for 5-10minutes and the whole screen blackout. Sent it for warranty and it turned to be a defective HD6990M. Feel so sad spending a big fortune for a faulty graphic card. Anyway, my laptop is on the way back. Does anyone know about voiding the warranty if I try to replace the wireless card with a better one? Because I certainly do not want to send it back to Malibal again for new card replacement, it takes so long :( , it is too far.

True story matey. One thing leads to another and voila you end up with something you didn't quite imagine you would end up with :) (unless you read on your homework)

Sure thing, you won't your warranty at all, as far as I know that is ;) you can easily take your laptop apart and replace the new with the old, hehe, good luck!
