Did you mean " you won't void your warranty at all ? ", missed out a "void"? But there is something like "sticker-seal" inside the laptop right? if it is broken when the laptop is opened then the warranty is voided.

No, there is no warranty sticker that you will break by opening up the laptop. You can easily do a wireless card swap yourself if you so choose and it will not void the warranty. However, if something else is damaged in the process- then you may run into problems.

The wireless card is located under the keyboard, so that will have to be removed to get to it.

Hi Malibal representative, thank you for your clarification. It seems complicated, I think I'll stick with the stock card. Just a few questions here, for warranty, does Malibal always replace something defective with other parts that are equivalent or better? Is it new or second-hand part? And the 2nd question is that Malibal recently replaced my graphic card under warranty, I am curious whether Malibal use stock thermal paste or IC diamond during repasting, because I did choose IC diamond when I first bought it weeks ago.

Yes many do work on these machines. If you are careful it does not void your warranty.

In fact the reason why I personally started with Clevo / Sager back in 1996 is that you CAN work on these.

Also too, the service manual as seen in the link below is available to all owners. :)

Thank you so much hemi...I notice the HD6990M graphic cards are no longer available on most resellers, is it because new generations of graphic cards are coming out? or is it because the cards are defective? because mine spoiled just after 2 days of receiving it.

Your welcome. Be assured it is NOT because of the 6990M or any other video card that has shipped recently is defective.

For example the 6990M has been VERY dependable consistently since it's release. You should be very happy with this card. Many have been.

Of course as most know on these forums a new generation is on the horizon...this is the way it is...once or twice a year... :)

    Hi!

I'm not yet a P170HM owner, but I will be in the coming weeks. :D hope I can post in here...
After many hours researching, asking around, reading reviews, I still can't find the information I need.

Question about sound, THX TruStudio Pro and the SPDIF output.

    My needs and wants:
    - I need to use headphones/headset with my laptop.
    - I want surround sound to improve online FPS gaming and directional sound awareness.
    - I also listen to a lot of music, but I'm not an audiophile, I'm not aiming for perfection: I probably can't afford the very best solution in the world.

    My questions:
    > Can I have virtual 5.1 surround sound in gaming just plugging stereo headphones/headset to the 3.5 mini jack, and the software on the Clevo does the rest? Is it just a matter of downloading and configuring the sound drivers to my needs?

    > is there a way to take advantage of the S/PDIF optical output to achieve better sound overall while still having surround sound for games?
If there is, what gear/adapters/cables do I need (besides the headphones/headset)?

    > I found several opinions about the "Dolby Headphone" technology being the best way to go. Is that possible with only the Clevo P170HM + Headphones/headset?
    or
    > will there be an advantage/need to buy an external USB sound card, maybe with with Dolby Headphone, to achieve better surround?
(I've read a lot about the quality of the Asus Xonar U1 Audiostation, and there's also the EarForce DSS2 from Turtle Beach or the Sound Blaster Recon 3D)

    > (slight offtopic) I'm thinking about buying the Steelseries 7H (headset) or the Creative Aurvana Live (headphones). Any suggestions on better set ups to get the best out of the P170HM?

Thank you kindly for any input and sorry for the long rant and nitpicking...

Hi guys, a quick question here. I notice clevo p170hm has only 2 antenna cables. If I want to upgrade into intel 6300 ultimate card, is that suitable? because intel 6300 has 3 antennas. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yes three are built in there from Clevo. One of the antenna wires my be underneath one of the brackets or taped aside in the area there. Check thoroughly.

If after a thorough check and you do not find it check with your dealer or reseller. :)

Surround sound on these models requires you to use a combination of jacks along the side doing different sets of output- not just a single jack. 5.1 headphones usually have their own software to allow for the correct output. I haven't used any myself, but from what I've seen they can be kind of gimmicky. A good pair of stereo headphones are never a bad investment.

I own the Aurvana headphones and they're OK, but definitely not premium models.

    thank you.
I own the low end Sennheiser HD 202, and looking to improve on that, but that's a topic for another forum. I'm trying to hear before buy but since my goal is headphones for the best gaming surround, there's not much experimenting I can do, besides reading the head-fi forum on the topic.

Yeah, I'm already expecting "gimmicky" but it would be awesome to learn from someone who's a few steps ahead on the trial and error path towards the least gimmicky possible.

So preorders for the NP8171 are now available and I have a few questions:

Does it have the backlit keyboard? (not listed as a feature in the official product descriptions)
Will it definitely support Ivy Bridge processors?
Are there any other significant changes from the NP8170?
Why aren't 3D screens offered yet?

Also, can anyone link to or make a comparison of the difference in performance between an nVidia GTX 280M and the 560M?

8170 does not have any backlight and no ivy bridge support.
3d screen is offered is just that if you going for this unit, it is already EOL, and they are not shipping with gtc580m anymore, thus the option of 3d is not available.

I use old Razer Barracuda HP-1 5.1 with my laptop throught 3x 3.5mm jacks and it works well without any other software than the Realtek installed. But if I would have to buy a new set today I would easily go with Corsair Vengeance 1500 ... which are USB connected...

you should check this comparison of 8 headsets which is very well done !

I have posted about these before, but this is the headset I use. PC Gaming Headset with 5.1 Surround Sound | Ear Force Z6A | Turtle Beach
You can get them for cheaper from places like Amazon or maybe Newegg, and they are comfortable and the sound is decent. :D

It also has the option to work with the Xbox360 if you have one of those too.

Thank you Poindexter, somehow I missed that on Tom's hardware.
I think I will stick with one of those USB recommended headsets, and I willl get all the virtual surround I can get for FPS gaming.

I guess the SPDIF output would only be useful if I went with "true" 5.1 headsets, but seems like the technology doesn't really pay off in surround and general sound quality. At least on my price range.
I kinda regret not being able to take full advantage of that output, though.

thanks, I read some conflicting reviews about Turtle Beach sound quality, but I'm sure this is really subjective. Although the Z6A does take advantage of the SPDIF jack.
I guess I'll have to chose one and go with it.
In the meantime no point in hijacking this thread on headset reviews so I think I have my info, thanks guys!

Good to know I could help ! For the SPDIF in my opinion it is only useful if someone would want to connect their sound to an Home Theater, because for headsets they make very good ones with USB. But maybe there's another usage to it that I don't know ...

What are the chances of any of these new units actually being delivered sometime in April? I'm thinking the NP9270 will be delivered in April but the 3 new machines still under NDA will be delayed and won't reach a single customer until May or later. With and April 5th NDA release, that doesn't leave much time in April for them to take finalized orders and start production. Or am I just being pessimistic?

I have the same problem as a previous poster - I have a P170HM and I just can't find the third antenna. My Ultimate-N 6300 is running just fine with only antennas 1 & 2 connected, but I'm still curious as to whether I'm being dumb here.

My Clevo looks exactly like the picture in the service manual, with two antenna cables running away from the wi-fi module towards the top of the picture (i.e. towards the hinge). Where should I expect to see the third cable running, assuming I really have one?

The loose end should either be hanging free or taped near the WiFi card. The shell should have come with the third antenna, but it's possible it was removed. Contact your retailer directly to see if they can get one for you.

You can only overclock the CPU if you have an XM model (with an unlocked multiplier). The GPU/memory are done with software like ATI tray tools or similar. If you've never overclocked before I recommend not doing it, as it's only a limited gain on laptops and your chance of breaking/frying a part is higher without experience. That said, there are others here that can probably give you good advice if you absolutely must try it.

There is no automatic overclock button, though you can pay for a factory overclock from some retailers.

Well, I went ahead and preordered an 8171 with all stock options + faster RAM from Xotic. Later in the year when better parts are available, I'll get 'em (especially the nVidia 680M). For now, the regular 8171 (with its mysterious unannounced specs) should be a fair bit nicer than my current dual core 5796.

I just paid a visit to the LPC-Digital website and found that the 8171 could only be ordered with a GTX 560M. Is that a placeholder of sorts while the NDA is in effect, or does the 8171 really come with the 560M?

Currently, everything listed for next gen laptops are just place holders.

Resellers are still under NDA so we can not post the new specs as of yet.

The word is we should all expect Sager's new laptops to be out around April 12th. This is subject to change though if there are unforeseeable delays with Ivy Bridge or Sager/Clevo.

April 5th is the release information date.

That is why the $50 deferred shipment discount ends on that day, and then shipping will begin around the 12th.

Any 220W adapter with the 4pin plug will do, as long as it has the same voltage and amperage ratings as the one that comes with the P170HM. As for the other end, a standard 3pin to UK 3pin cord works.
