Hi.
I will move to Japan in October for 6 months so currently on a look out for a good desktop replacement laptop. Originally thought only Hidevolution retails this Clevo model but recently discovered that XoticPC also has it and at better price as well. Just have a question about the LCD panel (17.3 1080p 144hz 72% NTSC Matt G-sync) used. Is it an IPS type panel? How is the corlor (s/aRGB%), contrast, brightness or just overall image quality?. I dont mind the response time but I do appreciate the higher refresh rate and color quality, and are what I look for in a laptop.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.Last edited: Sep 3, 2018 -

It is IPS and a middle of the range colour accuracy, fine for content consumption but not photo work.

I was trying to configure an evoc on HID evolution site just to get an idea and the thing cost me like more than 1000 dollars above some other sites. I was thinking that , that is maybe too much of a premium to pay ... for maybe a little bit more performance. I am anyways not going to be overclocking too much just for impressive benchmarks but want a machine that can run some virtualboxes / vmwares for cloud computing 2 node clusters without hiccups and also play my games without hiccups . Later on (sometime down the line) I might want to overclock or even sell this comp and buy a new one maybe ! Any views from people ?

I run whole networks of virtual machines on my laptop for pentesting practice. I also game for hours and hours on it almost daily. None of that is a problem as long as you spec it high enough.... -
The config I tried is mentioned below

I can say this.
If the 1k extra is bothering you, the premium price is justifiable given thier support, the delidding , the time taken to make the laptop run at it's best given what you are getting in such a form factor.
As I have stated in this thread many times over. I was in a rush to get mine, and because of that. That 1k premium I pretty much have had to eat myself giving what I alone have had to do and pay for my laptop to get it on par with one from HID.
My delidding of my 8700k killed my warranty for my laptop.
Due to issues from the builder , I had to eat a $450 motherboard. (Label paper under the CPU, then tried to tell me that a cpu or laptop would not function with pins either being bent and or covered by paper- linked seller to post on OCN of me trying to salvage a cpu that the owner had botched a delid and cpu would still work- but only with one memory slot and was pretty much told to suck it because I delidded my own CPU- this mind you I have delidded probably around 100+ CPUs as it stands now)
Sorry on the length. But after going through a few sellers ,It'seasier(and cheaper) to have a good seller with proven methods and that premium service than to rush and try and cheap out on something in this caliber of hardware.- price what it would cost to change out stock pads with Fujipoly, or to buy a Rockitcool delid tool, the Liquid metal etc. Then add the time of testing and making sure everything is good- that kinda eats up some of that premium within itself.
Just because you can build it per the specs doesn't mean you took the time to make it worth selling.DreDre and CaerCadarn like this. -

The P870 is the wrong laptop to be quibbling over cost. It represents the high end with which you can achieve in that form factor. Loaded out from HID, my cost pushes $7500. You need to really ask yourself if this machine is right for you. I have and keep concluding NO despite the fact that my tail wags extremely hard everytime somebody posts a used P870 for sale.

When someone says you've won the silicon lottery with your chip ( for example, CPU or GPU ), they're referring to the physical properties of the chip and what it can and cannot do with changing those properties ( undervoltage, over clocking, etc. ) For addition info see:
+ https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/4n7sly/what_is_the_silicon_lottery/
However, when someone says they purchased their CPU from Silicon Lottery, they mean the chip was purchased from this company, which sells CPUs in which they have been tested and categorized ( a process sometimes called 'binning' ) to determine those exact properties mentioned above. The better bin of the CPU the higher the $$$.
So in the case of HIDevolution, your machine can be configured with a CPU that they have either binned themselves or have purchased through the company, Silicon Lottery.

As stated with silicone lottery- they test the chip to assure X-Speed at stable temps -volts etc. You will pay a premium for that. As for the delidding as well. If you don't think it's worth the extra. Then just get a factory sent CPU , delid it yourself. And hope to all things holy everything from the delid to the testing goes right and your even able to hit 5ghz or near while it's in the chassis of the P870. Lol
That's just one example. But to have a monitor calibrated to me is pants on head retarded as getting the stuff to do it your self to me is a bit better to do. unless this is the only laptop or PC in general you ever plan on buying. As I have desktops and other laptops. And the calibration tools have already paid for themselves in my case. Lol
And btw. Stuff like getting drivers on a thumb drive for 25 bucks? Stuff like that is what adds up on the back end. It's alot cheaper for me to download a driver than to have a possible outdated driver sent to me on a thumb drive.Last edited: Sep 4, 2018DreDre likes this. -

You paid for a lot of stuff you don't really need to have.
You can get an OS anywhere. You don't need reinstallation media.
Do you really need display calibration?
The vapor chamber heatsink is nice but this is usually only for people who want to overclock to 5+ ghz. It's not a requirement.
The dead pixel guarantee is important. Dead pixels suck. Just look at all the people who buy monitors on amazon and then return them due to dead pixels.
The minimize backlight bleed requires them to also go through panels to find one that is extremely well built. That costs money too and also can cause them to have to send parts back to Clevo as well. So of course something like that is going to cost you. I can bet your buns with the huge AUO IPS lottery that happened the last few years on Amazon, that tons of people would have agreed to pay more to get a good panel.
So the only real essential things are the dead pixel and backlight bleed guarantees. Everything else you can find another way to get if you are savvy enough. The vapor chamber heatsink upgrade is a luxury. Those heatsinks are only included stock with SLI systems.
And you paid a lot for an extended warranty. More than everything else combined. Ask yourself if you really need these things or not.
If you order more reasonably, HID only turns out to be about $300 more expensive for things that are truly nice (vapor chamber and back light/pixel warranties -

The vapor chamber does help keep temperatures down.
Warranty, if it break after a year can you afford to replace it? -

The Vapor chamber is VERY nice to have. This will improve your temperatures substantially.
The backlight bleed guarantee is nice to have as everyone hates backlight bleed, however some people hate dead pixels more. the dead pixel guarantee is essential. +30 days pixel guarantee is pretty essential. It's up to you whether you want to take your chances with the backlight bleed lottery or not.
And 16 GB isn't enough for anything these days. Either go with 4x8 GB or 2x16 GB.
Experienced desktop builders can go with a "CPU-less" system and then buy their own CPU and then delid it and repaste it themselves. Or wait for the soldered i9 9900K which will be a drop in replacement with the Prema bios update. Less experienced users are advised to use HIDevolution's repasting and delidding service. -

Thanks for the replies everyone and now to respond to everyone in turn.
As to two extended warranties I didn't know if both are mutually exclusive or that the bigger one already includes the lesser one. If it does include then it saves me money for sure. Donald reached out from Hid so I might get in touch with them to get this thing cleared.
Now to further questions. I am going for the delidded choice for CPU rated for 5.1 ghz. I hope that is a good choice. I don't want to pay a premium for 5.3 ghz but I don't also want something that cannot go a little faster if I want to push it sometime in the future. So is my choice ok ?
As to thermal pasting I do not want a liquid metal paste so I hope conductonaught (if I spelled it correctly) which is used by HID isn't one. Is it ?
What is the difference between B173QTN01.0 and B173QTN01.4 other than the obvious version number change ? The latter is higher priced but doesn't even say that it is Gsync capable on HID site. It is even higher priced than the 4k AUO !!! Why so ?
I am repasting my new reviewed config based on suggestions. Please advise.

Attached Files:

They install their own hardware (or operating system), test it, then remove the CPU (or drives if you order it without SSD's) and ship it to you without the CPU installed. -
whatever you do, do not get the B173QTN01.0, IMO is the worst screen ever made. That screen has huge banding issues, bleeding issues, bad colors, it shouldn't be offered by any reseller. Get the FHD/ 3K (no G-Sync) or the 4K. To me the most situable for the P870TM1 hardware is the FHD one. With the 3K one you won't get constant >60 fps on every game plus in a 17 inch screen you won't see any difference while gaming between FHD vs 3K/4K. But you'll enjoy the extra refresh rate of the FHD screenFalkentyne likes this. -

With Liq. metal you need to be careful whilst transporting it and is best to use foam dams for absolute safety because you know how good the roads in India are!
Get the RAM sticks of your choice from HID they sell GSkill Ripjaws, Crucial Standard/Ballistix, Corsair Vengeance,HyperX, Samsung OEM DRAM or even Hynix brand(HyperX uses tweaked SK Hynix/Micron DRAM Chips) As for SSDs they sell Samsung SSD ranging 850 EVO and upwards as well. If you use Micron/Crucial Enterprise Drives then you can buy the SSDs elsewhere. Get everything from USA to reduce some expense on SSD/RAMs buying from India. Here its very expensive, HyperX 32GB costs 600-640$ depending on sellers.
Anyway you can't do 5.1GHz on all cores in India with higher ambient temps above 35C. You will reach 90C(If you used stock paste from clevo, you can cook some Rice and dal makhni at 100-105C) on max load.
Bringing down to 4.7GHz (for daily usage 24x7) should keep the temps below 80C with LM. If you have air conditioner set to 22C then, you can run anything at 50x or 5GHz easily.
I feel the machine should last 3 years on rough usage and you will say 6 cores is slow and upgrade to higher core parts from Intel. You can't future-proof because Intel/nvidia/AMD will release new products every year so buying new parts just to future-proof isn't really needed unless your work demands it. -
Thanks for the reply. Here are my thoughts. Nice to know you are from India and in the Prema team too ! I thought the word Prema is also a hindi word and I asked him that a couple of years back but he/she didn't say that it was
Two big reasons why I wanted to go top of the line is coz my spark clusters wouldn't work properly on the current 16 gb ram + 750m x 2 sli nvidia graphics, lenovoy510p machine and second is that ffxv refused to give me even 5fps on this lenovo with 750m on sli. If tthose two conditions were met I might not even be looking at buying a new machine. So even if I cannot upgrade parts, as long as I know that 5 - 7 years down the line I am not going to get a cloudera/hortonworks requiring like 30 gigs of ram for one cluster I am fine and that the games THEN will be able to pull through with 30 fps on lower resolutions then I am fine with it!
Btw two other questions.
1. If I get a desktop rather than this behemoth of a cost of machine will it be easy / okay to travel with that in US. Just wondering coz I know that you can carry the laptop with you but desktops I am not sure how to transport to newer locations.
2. Please let me know (for both cases) if the current slots for cpu and gpu for intel and nvidia are reverse compatible with older cpus. So , eg, is it possible to use the 7700k or 8700k or 6700k in the 9k intel slot in clevo. Also does the 1080 gtx slot accept 1070, 1060, 980 too ?
ThanksVasudev likes this. -
Hidevolution covers liq. metal spillage in case someone mishandles your PC. Its better to buy a accidental protection plan if you plan to use LM.
Its better to ask which RAM sticks are compatible and at what speeds. My BGA has little pointers and only few modules work, so I'm looking at Intel NUC Skylake model for more info.
Have you tried j95's modded nvidia drivers and observed a performance boost, its worth a try!
@Mr. Fox has grown tired of laptops so he invested in a old laptop and mainly focuses on desktop these days.
@Papusan is using Skylake Z170 board and upgraded from 6700k->7700k->8700K and only changed RAM sticks to use higher frequency(samsung OEM DRAMs). I don't about GPU backward compatibility and its better to ask Donald or woodstackz or meaker since they know more about it. -
Falkentyne Notebook Prophet
You don't really want (or need) liquid metal between the Integrated heat spreader and heatsink !
It DOES help but it's not required.
What *IS* required is liquid metal between the *DELID*, that is, the CPU being de-lidded, liquid metal replacing the intel "pigeon poop", and then the CPU being re-lidded and then re-sealed with RTV silicone gasket sealer (or similar). That is what HIDevolution does for you when they delid your CPU, and that is what you should be requesting. There is NO drawback NOR any danger to this. The liquid metal will not spill out of the IHS and there is high pressure on the CPU itself, so the LM will remain stable with no worries.
The "problems" you see regarding liquid metal is when it is used on BGA CPU's, when there is no sort of barrier or dam that keeps the LM firmly in place solidly (like the flat IHS on LGA cpu's). You have to deal with imbalanced and convex heatsinks on BGA systems, which cause issues if you haven't balanced or sanded your heatsink
LM on GPU's is a thing due to Ngreedia Pascal temp throttling--the CPU throttles by 13 mhz every 6 mhz, starting at the nice low temp of 38C! So you want to keep the GPU's as cool as possible if you want the highest possible framerate and benchmark scores.raz8020, Papusan, GrandesBollas and 1 other person like this. -

Seems someone "reported" me for simply offering to give you advice, anyways, don't get ripped off, do your research and I can help you and so can almost anyone on these forums.
I do not see how this is against the rules, I am friendly like this to everyone and always have been and have always tried to help, even when I don;t have the answer, I can usually direct to someone who does.
Anyways - LM does not always cause issues, but you are good to avoid it if you are not comfortable with it. You will have to after all service and maintain your own laptop in the coming years. I recommend Gelid Extreme/TX-4 from Tuniq, and Grizzly Kryonought as alternative TIMS which are easy to use and very high performing. (This does not count as advertising. not my products. Feel like I have to walk on egg shells because of people... just not the same forum it used to be)
Most companies you purchase a warranty from, should allow it to extend whereever you move to, but they might not offer this free return service or free shipping back and forth f you ever have an RMA, if unsure 100% I recommend simply asking ahead of time. I also recommend taking 3 years. Be safe, rather then sorry. peace of mind etc. This is not an upsale, not advertising here.
For the next gen, 5.0Ghz should actually be very possible with a OC even, but I think 4.5Ghz its a easy baseline for 8700K as an example, 4.4Ghz not much difference, still lowering the voltage a slight here and there and testing can yield fantastic results and performance. Ask around when the time comes, on these forums for how to get the most out of your CPU. (Again not advertising, trying to encourage this guy to ask ANYONE on these forums, I might be the best at this sort of stuff, but I was not trying to encourage a purchase or anything like that from me. Don't take this the wrong way whomever keeps reporting me. TY )
Also, being a hardcore enthusiast is not all that it is cracked up to be. Its really nice to just get what you pay for an have it work and have peace of mind, forget having to go nuts and tweak things or learn to disassemble your laptop just for a small boost here and there etc... some of us enjoy the challenege and thats mainly why we buy these laptops and follow them like our religion, but honestly, it's a computer - it's simply meant to be used as intended, so your totally 100% cool being the normal end consumer/user, people here do not judge you wrong for that stuff, infact most of the reviews on these sites are all about the regular expectations of such users (in my opinion,. of course, stuck being politically correct for fear of being reported or something, so sorry.)
As for getting the top of the line right now, you might want to wait a few months, 20 series is coming out and so is the next gen of INTEL CPU's, you would be able to pickup these older beasts at a discount, but alternatively you could also consider a desktop which would easily net you more performance for less cost. Another thing - you might not need SLI 1080 for instance to be future proof , for the same money being saved you could buy a more then capable laptop now, and another in 4 years, and be ahead. Having more then say 100FPS in your games in both cases at FHD/1080p usual casual settings. If we knew abit more about your base line, in terms of expectations, maybe we can help further, but if you got the cash to pull the stop on a EUROCOM X9C or whatever they call the regular naming format Clevo P870TM-series I think, then by all means go for it. I recommend getting at the least Kingston RAM (it's the best in my opinion) and make sure to get an NVMe M.2 SSD - makes a world of a difference in load and boot times etc.. There are also 144Hz panels, which I find look better being 3K then going with a 60Hz 4K as another opinion of mine, so keep those things in mind I say. Like the panels are what - 17.3-18.4 on these higher end models. If you sit 2-3 ft away, 3K vs 4K almost no difference, but the 144Hz will make a difference for sure. -
) ) but if the former then I will have to think about it and most likely avoid it !
. I already said that -->
. I was saying that my current system ( ie lenovo y510p with dual 750m's ) is an sli but never said I wanted to get a new machine with sli! I was hoping that RTXs come with more ram ie > 16gb DDR6 or something so that would help but don't want sli for sure.
So you are saying that if I don't get SLI and get the other things on the p870tm-1 successor then just that saving is good enough to help me buy something good again in 4 yrs ? Please quantize in terms of dollars what you meant by this coz I didn't understand how just a saving from SLI -> single gpu ( roughly 1000k) can help me get another p870tm-xx in 4 yrs. If you meant that this savings can add to my savings and reduce expenses 4 yrs down the line (rather than outrightly paying for the whole thing) then that makes mnore sense.
My reasons for looking for a laptop and expectations -->
I am pretty sure I want a top of the line laptop which is the best both in cpu and gpu at the moment. My reasons, (many are there but I listed two most important and relevant to me in the other page posts) are that I want a multithreaded hadoop/spark cluster and to play something like ffxv at 60 or above fps without the laptop crying mummy at ultra settings. I have a little money to spare now ie can go to 4500 or even to 5000 but I am very aware that I don't wish to spend money just coz it is there. If I pay 50 dollars more I need 50 dollars more of value. This might not be true for a lot of "enthusiasts" or people with deeper pockets but is SURELY true for me. I am quite happy and even positively want a machine which one first look gives the impression of garbage to anyone from aesthetics point of view ( ie no name, no fancy lighting etc etc) but is a powerhouse inside that only I or some very few knowledgeable people around are aware of!
To give you some background the machine I have right now (see my signature for lenovo y510p) is good for me and I don't think it is slow at all abeit for the fact that
a) it has ram limit of 16 gigs of ddr3 so cannot handle cloudera cluster needing 10 - 12 gigs of ram from a host.
b) 2 x 750m in sli cannot even run ffxv at 30fps on LOWEST ( ie 800 x 600) settings. So that is now a problem hence the lookout for other stuff.

*NOTE* the pigeon poop is removed and replaced with liquid metal.
It's the liquid metal between the IHS and heatsink (thus, exposed to air), OR between the BGA (soldered) CPU and heatsink that often has to be repasted. -

Can someone confirm that Eurocom is the supplier of clevo chassis to resellers including Xotic, lpc-digital and Hid ? I was wondering that if this is the case, might it not be better to get the machine directly from Eurocom for cheaper prices assuming they do the delidding and also check for backlight etc.
Also what is the news on the RTX 2080 mobile nvidia. Is it worth its cost or is 1080 a much better choice or are we still not sure and waiting for further news. ?
