For memory testing leave the keyboard off and use a usb one :p

Or add a couple small pieces of tape to the kb for quick and easy access. This is one of my favorite mods.

I have never managed to reach this in the same rig... 200W just too much for this joint heatpipe, or at least to my taste these temps

Jc_denton is running 5Ghz on a 9900K with temps like a stock 9900K in a desktop lol. It is crazy!

These 8086K’s easily run 5Ghz I think. Mine is delidded, and undervolted with 100% fan speed. cpu usually stays in the 70’s while gaming. Other than BFV which pushes it to around 90C with some spikes higher than that.

my GTX1080 runs hotter than my CPU 99% of the time with 1080P 144hz refresh rate.

it takes some effort to push full potential out of these laptops. But it seems to be worth the risk.

I believe, and do not take my opinion as offense, I have just not managed to reach that clock with this setup ( I had like 4-5 machines like this :)

Great job that you managed to reach it!

    Guys,
I have tried to TDP unlock my 1080's vbios, but it boots black screen :( What Have I missed in the tweaker? I have just set the slider to 255W, and that's it.
    Thx in advance

Did you do a backup of the vbios?
I haven't flashed my own card, but I think you might need to blind flash the original not modified vbios back on it.

I can hardly manage the 200TDP
I’ve blind flashed before. And it has been successful all three times I had to do it.

Flashed a ATI X850 Pro to a XT blind flash back, flashed AMD 7950 to GHz version, and a gtx660 OEM.

it is extremely scary. Nice to see that display come back on after a reboot though. I remember all of these very clearly from back in the day.

In my P750TM1 I was testing for unrealistic stability lol.

I was running prime 95 with intel burn test at the same time. I managed (3) cores at 5GHZ and (3) cores at 4.8Ghz with -0.180 under-volt and my cache is at 4.8Ghz. My Max cpu temp came in at 91C but it consistently bounced between 89 and 90C. It is extremely stable, even just -0.185 would cause a BSOD. But,(3) cores at 5.0Ghz and (3) cores 4.8Ghz with -0.180v undervolt was 100% stable even after nearly an hour of running it with 100% fan speed.

Considering the P870 has much better cooling I am honestly shocked you cannot get 5Ghz with a 8086K.

5Ghz does great in normal scenarios like gaming. Temps stay really low usually. But I couldn’t possibly run 5Ghz with prime 95 maybe if I sanded my die and ran LM with a thicker IHS.

I purchased this laptop used on eBay. It was claimed to be delidded, and I have no idea what else may been been done under the heatsinks to the cpu or not. It does have the better gtx1080 cooler. I dunno how much that helps cpu temps if at all.

This is my first ever non BGA laptop, and I am loving it.

I could push prime 95 on my old BGA book with only (4) cores at maybe 3.7Ghz for a hour straight? It had a 7820HK.

The voltage required with 4.8 is drastically lower than what is needed at 5Ghz.

I don't know everyone else experience but in my case, the GPU is always the bottleneck. I can underclock as low as 3,8 GHz (vs 4,3 GHz stock) and I see no more than 1 or 2 fps in most games I play (Batman Arkham Knight, assassins creed origins, watch dogs 2, and some others) ... Is there any game where the i7 CPU actually bottleneck the gtx 1080?

Possibly BFV running at high refresh rates but that's more for 2080ti levels I think.

So I was running out of disk space. My two 2Tb hard disks were at max capacity. I saw that Seagate makes 5Tb drives in the 2.5" form factor. I bought two of them. What I didn't realize is that while the drives are 2.5", they are twice as thick as any other 2.5" drive on the market.
    20191124_131734.jpg
So I had to get creative. Ended up cutting some holes in the palmrest for the drives to sit through. They sit about 2mm above the surface of the palmrest so they don't interfere with the lid closing or with typing. Actually it's quite nice having them under my right hand while typing due to the heat they give off (I have cold extremities). Everything bolts up from underneath and doesn't need any additional modifications.

Now I have 10Tb of spinning disk space!

Only issue is you can't use it as a palm rest as it will damage the disks.

The metal cases are strong enough that the few grams of pressure my palm exerts won't affect them.

Hey guys, how much power does your 8700K need to sustain 4300 MHz on all six cores on Prime95? Mine does needs like 104 W so I have to set PL1 = 105000 in BIOS, otherwise the CPU does power throttle. The bad thing is @105W my CPU reaches 100ºC .. It seems my CPU is not turbo friendly

I would really avoid Prime95 for stability testing on a laptop. If all you do is play games and do some production work, I'd use R20 or R15 to test stability. Prime95 will overwhelm you laptop and should only be used if you do critical work and need outmost stability on your laptop.

The problem on testing stability with Cinebench is the test is way too short, it won't last more than 1 minute. The CPU won't even get hot.

    I'm using Prime95 v29.4 build 8 (with CpuSupportsAVX=1 parameter)

I use my laptop 99% of the time to play games and web surfing. 1% other tasks, maybe using video encoding with Handbreak

So yes you are running the most stressful benchmark where CPUs tend to have a turbo speed at stock below the base clock.

That depends on your clocks, turbo duration and powerlimits.. at 4.3Ghz you're not really pushing your 8700k nor the chassis.
Anyway, R20 is a longer AVX load if you think R15 is too short.

Thanks I just found out that R20, the one you download from Windows Store has a build-in option to perform the test for at least a user-defined amount of seconds. This way the test loops as long as you want.

I'm getting average 106W of power consumption (-90 mW of voltage offset) and Max temperature of 99°C. The good thing is the clock stay at 4300 MHz and it don't power throttle as it did with 8k fft test of P95.

I don't think that unified waterblock from Taobao for the p870 can handle small FFT's at 5Ghz. Unless you maybe pump liquid nitrogen through it.

Of course not. there is nothing to do with the powermod. My key point was flawless install (no inf mod etc) and keep gsync. Both were ok. I was considering the powermod if there is flaw with the 2080.

Based on benchmarks there is a small difference, I would say 15% in FHD, in higher res it could be bigger. However under normal gaming circumstances you cannot "feel" too much compared to a well set 1080gtx. The "only" major difference is the RTX features which are really nice in some games.
