Is that what PWM means? pulse width regulation? I've been Googling that for 10 minutes. So before I waste any more time, what does pulse width regulation mean and is it good? Hope you're doing well Prema

GPUs can be more than half and then you have the CPU and ram (which has shot up for instance but our base prices have not). That's ignoring things like the motherboard. That's just physical items and not things like development, testing, shipping etc.Jon Webb likes this. -
I just asked for an actual price breakdown for the sole purpose of finding out what causes even fan improvements to be money-losing for Clevo. And those GPUs don't cost anywhere NEAR what we have paid for them for many years

Oh just asking for commercially sensitive data?
Also yes those GPUs do cost the suppliers most of what you pay for them individually plus now you have to design the board yourself.Jon Webb likes this. -
why not using a joint venture (MSI+Clevo) for that?

I bought mine from Gentech and have had problems from delivery, faulty product, and communication. Pay the extra for HIDevolution, save yourself the headache. I would GLADLY pay the extra knowing what I know now...

I rec'd a lemon CPU. RMA form was emailed to me Tues, I sent back next day air (Wed) and was told that they would rush me a new CPU with same specs. Sent an email yesterday (Friday) for an update and they are talking about the CPU should be done by mid week next week. No definite dates...which means that I "may" have a CPU on Friday. I'm calling them on Monday for an actual date (which I've asked for at least 2x) and if I get the run-around, I'm cancelling the order and getting a CPU from HID. Btw, when I received my lemon, members from this community were quick to offer support AND when I sent a question about a CPU build to HID, Ted from HID answered my questions on a HOLIDAY WEEKEND no less...it took until Monday afternoon for a response from Gentech and even the, it was a non description reply...no sorry, no what can we do to fix it, no urgency, nada. Not even a phone call. For the $2800 my build cost, I would have thought that they would respect the position that a lemon computer put me in...from lost business (I DJ part time) to disappointment. Customer Service goes a LONG way...and their lack of may have very well lost me as a customer.

Sounds like you need a new reseller
Probably for any extended loads.
Prema mod. Also, I shudder at the thought that a notebook that may cost north of $5000 would ever have a maximum warranty of 2 years.
Buy it from HID. I have said since these units came out on the original DM that if you want it to function well you're gonna want a delid. Everybody running quick benchmarks like cinebench or firestrike doesn't mean one lick of meowmix, those things end far too quickly. When you want to sit down with a game at 120fps for 3-4 hours, your CPU is going to get a lot hotter.
But does the TM1 1080 work in the DM2?
Did you raise the power limit? The stock is like 91W long. It makes sense it would throttle unless you set that to like 300W or something.Stress Tech and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
All that said, Call me jaded or whatever but, good customer service and communication makes ALL the difference in the world.

Quick question. 8700K / 1080 vs 1080SLI.
As a guesstimate, how long would u say each setup is viable? I'm considering the 1080 SLI setup as opposed to a single 1080...

Yes because we all know nvidia always goes so cheap...

An email I had sent GenTech last night regarding questions was never answered, definitely seems worrisome in the event something was to go bad I wouldn't be able to get a reply within 24 hours. In comparison Donald@HIDevolution seems to be on here even on the weekends.
So here's another question for you two wise ones, how important is the "vapor chamber": NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5 X 200W + Vapor Chamber GPU & CPU Heat Sink Set - NVIDIA G-Sync Enabled +$195.00
I'm already approaching sub $4000 for an original absolute max budget of $3500, but if the vapor chamber is really that important I'll wait a few more days and order my Clevo with it.
Honestly I just don't want any blue screens from overheating like what I got with my Alienware back in 2014. I do run my laptops all day doing work with VMs, some gaming at night (Civ and Total war). The GTX1080 is important to me as it will be an upgrade my PC's 980 ti, which is all screwed up from Hurricane Harvey (roof leaked in home). Same reason I'm going for coffee lake is so it's an upgrade my PC's 4770k.
Thanks again for the replies!Stress Tech and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
Hope you buy it from a place that still gives you the vapor chamber.Stress Tech and Donald@Paladin44 like this.

Christ I need to sell a kidney or something, my ideal config is over $4300.

Agreed. Pricing is high. On ebay a GTX 1080 laptop brand new like $2000. I am spending more than double for a Coffee Lake CPU and better cooling. :/Donald@Paladin44 likes this.
-
I'm not so much co CER Ed about the pricing as much as I am the quality of product and customer service. So far,I haven't seen anyone better than HID...so,the extra cost is one I would be willing to pay. Also, the Premo BIOS is another way to fully optimize your system. Guess it depends on what u value. You get what u pay for in most cases...

8700K, 32GB RAM (need it for VMs, 16GB isn't enough), 500GB Samsung 960 EVO PCIe NVM SSD, 1TB FireCuda upgrade, 3 Year warranty, GTX 1080 with Vapor chamber, Intel 8265 (not dealing with Killer wifi again), 30 day no dead pixel, and $30 thermal grizzly w/Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads. $4200ish.Stress Tech and Donald@Paladin44 like this.

I only have a 1070
I have not tried it in the DM2. Yup, PL1 and PL2 are both 300W with VR Current set at 2400.
Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -
Forget the 960 EVO. Waste of money. Buy a 256GB 850 Pro (whether through them or elsewhere) and a 500GB MX300 M.2 or something. Forget firecuda, they aren't reliable. 1TB 7200RPM and call it a day.
Also, as for the pricing for other laptops with a "similar" system... none really exist. But yes, it is high for its specs.
Get throttlestop copy this and then try it, tell me what the Limit Reasons are

HIDEvolution mainly has Samsung brand NVME SSDs, I don't see Crucial MX300. I need to get it from them so the warranty covers the SSD. Otherwise I'll regret it when I kill the NVME SSD. At my last job we used Dell XPS 15's, and I killed two NVME SSDs because of the work we do (lots of read and writes in VMs). Both were NVME and honestly in my PC I had a Samsung SSD and NVME is day and night faster in many tasks. Especially when bitlocker or LVM + LUKS is used IMO.Stress Tech and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
Buying them separately will give you equal or longer warranty and they'll be cheaper. If you're absolutely sure you'll use the NVMe then fine, but you will find them cheaper on Amazon usually.
To be clear, OEM drives like SM961/PM961 are NOT the same as the consumer lines like 960 EVO/960 Pro. They have OEM-based warranty ONLY. Normal consumer drives have a standard warranty elsewhere... and 850 pros have 10 years

gotta spam those optane SSDs in these machine and make it fly, when a decent capacity like 96-128GB comes out on a m.2 form

Good luck ever seeing that happen, the 3D Xpoint controller can't be used in M.2, it's too much, from what I understand. M.2 is, was, and forever will be, a terrible form factor for the excess speeds. Too much fiddling with airflow and heatsinks and throttling units with barely any real-world benefit over a solid SATA drive. Then 3D Xpoint comes out using PCI/e lanes, and lo and behold... PCI/e slot or U.2 slot only. Welcome to the jungle, where they know they need to make something that'll properly work for enterprise customers, so M.2 is nowhere to be seen~Donald@Paladin44 likes this.

what? no man, optane is just fine the controller doesnt put that much heat, its the optane memory itself rofl. and with only few channels on a m.2 form factor it'll be no problem. 96GB gen 2 or gen 3 xpoint memory will be just fine. no fiddling needed, excess speed is welcome at all time.
-
I'm talking about using the drive as a storage device, not as a cache. 96GB on an OS drive is anemic even if it works.

@Donald@HIDevolution - Are the Vapor Chambers available for the 1080's?
