Maybe GPU-z still an entry for the dGPU in the registry. What happens if you delete any dGPU entry in Device Manager and then reboot? Does Windows find the hardware and add it back on the list.

The other test is to run the computer on battery with HWiNFO > Sensors open. This should show both the power drain from the battery and the current speed of the GPU. If you then do something which loads the graphics does the battery drain increase by the amount expected should the dGPU be running?

This is what I'm standing at:
    • Ok so I deleted the AMD GPU from Device Manager, (which was normally just disabled) and rebooted, no sign of it in GPU-Z.
    • Thing is though in HWiNFO I am only seeing the AMD one at 100% fan speed!
    • My power consumption is also high at around 20W, but this is the norm for me for a while now.(No change btw on using graphics-requiring programs).
    • Before reading your post I tried upgrading to W10 Creators version, and the freezing issue which always occurs during Windows Feature Updates happened again. After uninstalling the AMD, also had another freeze in normal usage.
I'm still convinced that I'm doing something wrong in the BIOS mod, so if anyone did succeed with it, I would appreciate a screenshot of all changed pages. Just to clarify, the windows update is not that important to me, I'm only working with it as an indicator of my GPU's crashes etc. So while I can manage without disabling the GPU in BIOS, it would be mighty helpful if I can, more so to get those pesky Windows Upgrade popups off my back! (Plus longer battery life) I don't play games and such either, so this is more of a matter of convenience rather than need.

Right click on the computer name at the top of the Device Manager list and select Scan for Hardware Changes to see if it finds the dGPU.

What does HWiNFO show as the CPU package power and what is the CPU speed?

After i deleted it in Device Manager (which then got labelled as "Video Controller" which i also disabled but made no difference), the freeze issue kept on happening so I restored it to what it was and left it disabled. (I'm assuming now that this is proof that it isn't disabled in BIOS)

This is where it gets weird. CPU speed (I'm referring to an idle PC in all these cases) is 1.4 to 1.9 Ghz whether plugged in or on battery. But plugged in it ranges from 7 to 20W without any apparent reason. On battery it never goes below 14W.
Also note I don't have Intel MEI installed from SW update as it keeps giving errors

Minor observation regarding the above Registry key - I've tinkered with the registry for decades now and everything I've learned tells me that 'ControlSet001' is just a backup of 'CurrentControlSet', so a change made to ControlSet001 shouldn't have any effect. Is this really a change that has to be made to ControlSet001 and not CurrentControlSet?

This needs to be debugged: Compare the mains and battery settings for the power profile you are using (I always use the optimized / performance on demand setting to let the CPU change it speed according to the workload). If that is the CPU package power then 14W by the CPU package represents around 20W for the whole system if the dGPU is not running.

So... Recently I was trying to run a game on my NP780Z5E-S01UK, and the screen froze, so I reset it.

Then, when it started up, the screen went black. Starting it up in Safe mode worked OK, but nothing I could do with the graphics drivers seemed to do any good until uninstalling all the AMD software and disabling the AMD 8870M in Device manager. Now it starts up, and operates fine, except it can only use Intel Graphics. If I re-enable the AMD GPU in Device Manager it freezes. If I try to install the AMD driver from Samsung Update, it freezes.

Has my GPU died? And if so, what are my options, just replacing the entire motherboard if I can find a spare?

If I have to live with Intel Graphics only, so be it, but the laptop was bought as a gaming computer, and it would be nice to get my decent GPU back going again.

Most likely yes. Try installing windows from scratch. If the problem persist, you can use a link in the first post to mod your bios and disable the ATI GPU from there.

I'd rather not toast my otherwise working SSD contents. Maybe I'll see if I can find a spare 2.5 inch drive to do a clean install on, and try that. Looking back through the thread, it looks like this is something that just happens.

I've never had an AMD branded chip that hasn't caused me bother (although I did have two perfectly fine ATI graphics cards previously). Never again, I think.

    hi mental1st,

Got same problem. running ativ book 8 (np880) with double graphic card

    what happened:

running windows 10 home RS1 with amd card running. had some issues with brightness gone, but fixed it. Ran amd with new amd drivers for AMD Radeon R9 M270.. the samsung divers never got updated for the 8870.....

4 sept playing game.... suddenly game froze.....nothing worked..no ctrl-alt-delete possible
    - restarted laptop with powerbutton... samsung logo appeared..the running windows circle...and.....black screen...nothing
    to make long story short...
    - tried image from 1 month ago...worked for few minutes..then same behaviour and errors.
    - did clean install with windows 10 imageon clean disk, worked, but i could not download all drivers from internet... got stuck again
    - did clean install with latest windows 10 build, so there was less to download...installed samsung software...and newest amd driver...again laptop got stuck

    HOPELESS

    then i found your message..

    - started in drive with latest build clean install and went in safe modus. Remover all amd drivers with amd clean utility.
    - started win normal boot:.... and laptop running with no problems!!!!!!

    - took my ssd, removed amd drivers in safe modus and restarted....laptop running again. phew...

    ERGO:

Windows did software update for windows 10 RS2.... didnt warn me....and the update together with amd drivers caused the crash. lost 3 days to find problem, and nearly gave up laptop (thank u windows)

    Status now:

    - Cant go back to previous build, because in my search for the solution in the first place i removed the recovery point....

    - windows works (RS2), but only with intel graphics. Cant install samsung settings, software fails to install..no new software yet from samsung.

the old amd driver for 8800 from samsung also gives the boot problems.... Newest amd drivers dont work (fail to install on certain point...and then the bootproblem occurs)

tomorrow i Phone samsung for a working set of software for windows 10 RS2.. The lastest for np880 are windows rs1

(still dont know if amd card is broken...dont think so...and hope not)

Looks like I couldn't escape the bulging swollen battery issue on my Samsung ATIV Book 8 - this morning noticed it swollen and pushed apart the top and bottom of laptop casing warping the touchpad area. Luckily it doesn't look like a permanent warping so replacing battery should work right ? How did folks fair with their replacement batteries ? Any issues ?

I got it to get past the 71% freeze by disabling the Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader driver and running the AMD clean utility to remove the AMD video drivers. Memory card reader worked after the upgrade was done. I haven't messed with the AMD video.

That fixed it for me too. CU installs without hanging at 71%.

Unfortunately, I can't find a working FeatureTestControl value that gives me back brightness control. F048 and FFFF lock it at max brightness, whereas F001 and F000 just give me dark screen again.

    Should specify:

You only need to delete the AMD gpu drivers for the CU to install properly. Once it does, most/all of your drivers will be replaced by windows variants for Win10 CU. This will give you the gimped Intel GPU driver that will never clock above 350 core (supposed to be 1200; also, old news. This happened even as far back as Win 10 before AU).

So, I installed the original Intel OEM drivers from SW update. This fixes the clock issues. However, this driver also refuses to respond to the classic FeatureTestControl settings. I'm not sure if this is a driver issue that would be fixed by going back to the gimped Windows driver, or if it's an OS-related issue.

Crimson 17.10.1 installed, but only "partially". Driver installs fine, but it says the AMD settings does not install correctly. Doesn't seem to matter. I have full functionality in AMD settings...

Update: Everything's working just fine. FeatureControlTest works at F008. I just needed to DDU everything and start from scratch. Working configuration is samsung OEM intel drivers and catalyst 16.4.2 -> 17.10.1 (Trying to install anything more recent than 16.4.2 as clean install will cause bluescreens on boot)

Great to hear. My Samsung ATIV Book 8 NP880Z5E is out of warranty so had to fork out AUD$175 for replacement that shipped within a week. Paid 2x more than usual price as all the Chinese providers had ~30 day ETA for shipping ! The Samsung genuine replacement battery arrived yesterday and just pucked it in and it's working, charging it up right now :)

Hope it lasts as using my travel laptop, Dell Inspiron 13 7000 during the downtime was a noticeably slower than Samsung ATIV Book 8 despite having 4-5 yr old cpu. Dell Inspiron 13 7000 has 2C/4T Intel Core i7 7500U, 16GB and 512GB Micron 1100 SSD vs Samsung ATIV Book 8 has 4C/8T Intel Core i7 3635QM, 16GB and 960GB Crucial M500 SSD. Extra cpu cores/threads seems to make a difference :)

when was this update made ? my laptop was down since September 30, 2017 so something to watch out for me I guess.

Seems Samsung ATIV Book 8 NP880Z5E-X01AU laptop is showing it's age, as now my cpu fans are started to make more noise as well sometimes. so anyone replaced cpu fans on this laptop too ? Looking at https://www.ca-laptop-fans.com/samsung-np880z5e-x01au-fan-f31943.html for replacements.

@John Ratsey so replacing just cpu fans involves removing the entire heatsink assembly too ?

Guess the age of replacement battery is showing too heh. When brand new laptop was bought in 2013 it managed 8-10hrs battery life on windows 8, then updating to windows reduced that to 4-6hrs. Now this replacement battery estimated at ~2.5 hrs if batteryinfoview and windows battery report is accurate :(

How safe is it to continue using the swollen battery? Mine is not too bad, swelling a bit on one side only, but it does make my touchpad useless. Can anyone point me to a reliable international shipper they've found with good prices? I'd really appreciate it thanks.

Same setup, only problem seems to be that the AMD card doesn´t go completely offline, I see a significant reduction in battery life against windows 10 from 2 weeks ago. It's always the same thing with the updates on windows 10, I waste weeks trying to find the optimal setup.

I have the Samsung ATIV Book 6 NP680Z5E-X01US
I just got for a present a PS3 Wireless Bluetooth Controller Pro and was wondering if it would work on this laptop? I don't play games, but my wife likes to. I use to have a Sony HDTV which this would probably work on, but now I have a LG 3D UH8500 TV and trying to figure that one out too.

The Ativ Book 6 ships with a 57 Wh lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 3780 mAh. The battery is attached with screws and not glued in, as frequently seen. Does anyone know if it's possible to add a more powerful battery like the one in the ativ book 8?

    Hi all.
I have NP770Z5E-S01IT, it's a problem change ram because 4gb ram is soldered on mobo.
I tried change ram, add crucial 16gb ram single chanel, but windows and BIOS dont's see 16gb! However the program CPU-Z and another program read 16gb ram!!

How can I do? Unfortunately I have already update the bios!

Computer froze while playing CS:GO, decided to shut it down by holding the power button. After that there was a black screen problem which I sort of fixed by removing AMD drivers. Decided to format the drive and do a clean install, but now I can't update Windows because the AMD driver is in the Windows Update and keeps messing up my PC. Is my dGPU fried or can someone smarter than me tell me what to do? The main problem is that I can't install windows updates now without freezing up the computer and I can't remove it from the list. I'd like to at least have an updated system without AMD drivers.

Update: 16.4.2 installs perfectly, trying to update the driver from AMD settings makes it freeze again. Sticking with just the Intel drivers for now.

It's more than likely working, especially since you updated your BIOS. If I'm correct, it it wasn't working, your notebook wouldn't be working either. CPU-Z is pretty reliable as I've used it for a few years now.

To my knoledge you cant have that amount of ram memory. Since the laptop can handle that amount of memory, its showing the amount it can actually work.

When you see cpuz it reads the spd of the ram module, hence the correct data, wich doesn't mean you are using it.

...and why is that? It is one of the better laptops I've had for my photography work, with the exception of not having a removable battery. Actually removing the rear cover and a couple screws does remove the battery.

    Hello everyone,

I opened and cleaned (removed dust from fans and put on new thermal grease on CPU and GPU) my 870z5e (non-touch, i7-3625) today, installed a new 512GB Samsung SSD and made a fresh install of Windows 10 (before I had HDD-drive and Windows 8).

While Windows is running smothly, all of the sudden several keys of my keyboard don´t work anymore (8 keys in total, two rows next to each other: 67yuhjnm). I am typing on an external USB keyboard right now without any problems.

Has anyone experienced this kind of problem before? I checked the two cables connecting the keyboard with the motherboard, tried it with the old HDD and Windows 8 but the problem of several non-working keys remains.

Anyone ideas what it could be?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Did you try pressing them in different spots? Like pressing the faulty keys in the lower right side of them? I have a faulty "6" key, and pressing in the right way solves the problem.

It sounds like a hardware problem rather than a software one.

    Hey faeterov,
thanks for your reply. I tried to hit them from every possible angle, they still don´t work. I also think it is a hardware problem. I only hope that it is just the keyboard and not the motherboard.

So, it's Windows update time again, and this time I'm only getting so far through before the laptop hangs.

From the thread, I gather that's because disabling the broken AMD GPU in Device Manager isn't good enough, so I've been attempting to unlock the BIOS.

I've followed the instructions linked to from the first article, but like jessevl and azharb17 before me, the flashed BIOS doesn't seem to want to take - I don't see any extra settings in the bios menus.

Are there any extra instructions? Does it need a specific version of the bios? Is there something you have to do with regard to power cables - there seemed to be reference to odd power-specific things in the instructions linked.

I'm having some severe issues with WiFi on my campus.
WiFi works fine everywhere else but on campus it's not stable.

I have Windows 10 with the Centrino N 6235 driver.
WiFi works fine on my smartphone on campus, but it's very bad sometimes on my laptop

Hello people. First of all, I apologize for my horrible English.

Maybe this question has already been done in the post (if so, I apologize) but with such a large number of messages it is impossible to find anything about it.

I need your help. I am the owner of an NP870Z5E (Portuguese version). The DISPLAY panel on my screen shows retentions (burned image ?, I do not know what the correct expression is in Shakespeare's language) since I bought it in 2013.
This problem is evident especially in dark gray and continuous funds. The retention has been increasing over time to unbearable limits for me (I am an architect specialized in graphic design). From what I had read in this same place, the retention diminished with time but in my case, at least, it has been the opposite ... it can stay about 2 minutes.

For what little I have found out, this panel is assembled by other brands. The brand / model does not matter as long as the connections are compatible (I am not 100% sure about the latter).

Could someone give me the reference / link, etc. of an original or compatible panel that does not present this damn problem? I know that substitution is not an easy task, at least for me (from what I see the frame is stuck, not screwed or with clips) but in my city I have qualified technicians so that the result is acceptable, or I hope so.

Maybe only with the serial number / model of the panel, my trusted provider could get one, although they have already told me that they do not guarantee that the problem will not arise again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

Hey @Kaneda, sorry to hear about your display problems.

There are indeed many reports early in this thread about image retention problems, although also some discussion about whether software and display settings may be exacerbating it. I am sure you already read those posts, but if not, I highly recommend you check them out. You can use the forum search or Google searches such as site:notebookreview.com book 8 image retention.

As for replacing the panel, SamsungParts.com is tradititionally our source for locating parts numbers. Unfortunately I don't see any NP870Z5E models listed, only NP880Z5E (ie touch screen). For that model, SamsungParts.com lists part # BA59-03616A (panel only, $250) as well as part # BA96-06473A (full display assembly, $392).

Googling NP870Z5E display panel brought up several reasonably priced listings on eBay. I would check those.

I believe you are right it is a glue job (as with most laptops), which makes replacement somewhat messy. I replaced the 18.4" display panel on my old HP HDX laptop last year and bought a full Display Assembly for that same reason. But a good repair shop (or anyone with experience) should be able to replace the panel itself.

Good luck. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Let me ask for the 3rd time, Anyone know??? If not, do they still make the stock battery for this?

In addition to my battery question in previous post, can a wireless or bluetooth controller work on my Samsung ATIV Book 6

Hi I just burnt a np870 motherboard. Only replacement I could find locally is a np780 mb.
    Are those boards compatible?
Np780 specs says it has 4g ram soldered and max system memory is 8g. Can a bios upgrade allow me to run 12g ram?

    Hi Jack,

As you know, we never had much traffic here for the NP6xx models, neither in this thread nor in the other Book 6 threads (linked in the Samsung Forum Sticky List). That's probably why you haven't received any responses.

SamsungParts.com lists part # BA43-00361A as the battery for NP680Z5E, so at least you should be able to buy the original battery.

As for whether you can use an NP870/880 battery instead, your guess is as good as mine. If your BIOS has Battery Life Extender, NP770/780 batteries should be the better choice.

SamsungParts.com has them all. Once you located a part number there, I would Google that number for other sources.

Since WiFi/Bluetooth cards are more standardized, I think there is a better chance that you can replace the card in your Book 6.

    Hey @HUlvi, welcome to NBR.

The size and form factor is the same between the NP770/780 (2013 Series 7) and the NP870/880 (Ativ Book 8). But I wouldn't be so sure that you can use an NP780 motherboard in your NP870. As I recall, the NP770/780 uses the ABU BIOS family, whereas the NP870/880 uses the ADH family.

For one thing, Samsung changed their batteries between the two models, so the NP780 BIOS may not support your newer battery.

And as you pointed out, the NP770/780 was limited to 8GB RAM, whereas the NP870/880 supports 16GB. I don't recall that a BIOS update fixed that limitation on the NP770/780, but I could be wrong.

If you study posts from the first few months in this Owners thread, you may find better answers. Also check the 2013 Series 7 announcement thread which predated it. Googling site:notebookreview.com ativ book 8 max ram may help zoom in on relevant posts. Do note that there were many (very different) Series 7 models back in the days; you are only looking for posts related to NP770/780 models.

    Hello everyone!

I am a owner of a Samsung Chronos 7 (NP780Z5E) notebook with a switchable graphics of Intel HD400 and AMD Radeon HD 8770M graphics card. My previous update on the video drivers were AMD Catalyst 15.11.1 beta driver from November 2015. In the Catalyst program, it says my card is actually a R9 M200x series card, which I probably think it's the same card as I game with no problems with this driver. All this was done on Windows 8.1.

So I've completely re-installed my OS after a corrupted drive and am using WIndows 10. I went ahead and tried to install the newest Crimson Driver "Crimson ReLive Edition 17.11.1", but it always freezes my computer halfway. After trying to install it 2 times with errors, I may decide to revert back to the 2015 "Catalyst 15.11.1 Beta" drivers.
