umm how about this way? cuz i completed Win8.1 update now.

downgrade to window 8 and try this way.

there are two steps. first, before w8.1 install, Update BIOS, drivers to the latest ones.
then, Do windows Update and Install w8.1

second, after installing w8.1, By SW Update, Install the latest BIOS, drivers same as before.
    then, Do Windows Update.

    hope it helps

Guys, I'm pretty scared my laptop is dead.

I thought it might be the battery so I physically disconnected it. It still wont do a single thing. Is it normal that it can't do anything without a connected battery?

I can't believe how this happened, I always take so much care for my wonderful laptop :(. I really need it for my studies. At least my SSD with all my CADwork on is still intact.

    What should I do?

Was the computer running when you had the water incident? If it was running then did it immediately go off?

I think the recent Samsung notebooks with internal batteries will not run unless the battery is installed. Is the PSU OK (do you have access to a volt meter to check the output)?

Pure water shouldn't be as dangerous as most liquids but did the computer make any strange noises during the incident.

It was. But I turned it off once I found out.

This is in no way covered by warranty right?

I'm using all the drivers from SWUpdate on my Windows 8.1 currently. The AMD driver is the 13.9 WHQL.

The only time I get the black screen upon booting on to the desktop is when Windows Update decided to auto install the AMD driver from Windows Update, have successfully reproduced the exact same black screen on two others Ativs.

One work around which I found is to download the Graphics driver from SWUpdate. Totally disconnect from the internet, wireless and wired, uninstall the AMD and Intel drivers which have been installed prior to upgrading to Windows 8.1, then reboot, remove the stray registry, files and folders. After which run the SWUpdate graphics package. Reproduced this on the two other Ativs and all worked out well without black screen.

So far the drivers from SWUpdate are quite stable as of typing, AMD driver checksums are similar to the WHQL from AMD website with exception to perhaps some changes to the enduro switching.

How do you define pure water? Pure water is defined a H2O which is quite impossible because as long as H2O is exposed to oxygen and other impurities, it imbalances the H2O equation which causes water to become good conductor of electricity.

Most likely water electrocuted some chips, which is the usual case of electronics coming into contact with water.

Thank you for your contribution, I'm sure it'll help, but the point is different. We are not supposed to pass through this mess to let the computer be up to date. This is just ridiculous. W8.1 was available to Samsung time ago, just to test their updates in time, but they didn't. Shame on you Samsung!

Calcium? I believe it is the layer of chemicals manufacturers use over the PCB which in the event of contact with water leaves behind these white hard power residue as an evident that the electronic has come into contact with water. I'm not sure if our laptop warranty covers water spills, but usually, it doesn't, unless you purchased accidental warranty type package.

Are there people who can fix burnt/ damaged chips and resistors on something as complex as a mobo or do I just have to send it in for repair and hope that it won't cost me more than the original price of the laptop?

Perhaps you should read what other people are facing with their Windows 8.1 upgrade who are not using Samsung? Other manufacturers have the fair share of drivers issues.

To release drivers to the public firstly the manufacturer have to undergo testing, change what is necessary, after which obtain WHQL from Microsoft. AMD 13.9 WHQL is out long ago, but for Samsung to test it, obtain WHQL for their Samsung laptop is another question. Delays are usually at the Microsoft certification part, can you imagine how many drivers they have to go through certification?

I'd rather Samsung obtain WHQL for their drivers before releasing to the public then to release non WHQL drivers and cause more harm than intended.

I'm afraid its better to send back to Samsung, the amount of damage is not easy to be detected as we are talking about water, no form, no shape, seeps into every tiny gap it can find.

Try using a hair dryer set to the lowest heat and sort of dry the areas with the white powder residue, then connect everything back and see if it works.

Make sure the hair dryer is not hot to your hands, only warm, and slowly warm the areas with the white powder residue, do that for a couple of minutes for each area.

You can try cleaning it up very carefully but, as already noted, if the service people see any trace of water damage then the warranty is invalid. A new mainboard won't be cheap (a soldered CPU adds substantially to the board cost) but is cheaper than a new computer.

It is worthwhile checking any household insurance policy in case there is accidental damage cover.

Guys, i need to ask you something:

Like one hour ago I proceeded with all the updates from SWUpdate.
    I restarted my device.

Now I have the problem that my display isn't used properly anymore in the sense, that there are all the edges not exploiting the whole display.

I hope you understand my prob
and looking forward to some hopefully helpful answers,

    the_machinist

//EDIT: my device is the NP880Z5E-X01AT

It can be without doubt, but 2 or more brands mistaking everything with W8.1 update don't make their mistake something right or acceptable. New w8.1 has been available since quite a lot. Microsoft publishes alpha beta and rc just to let developers adapt their products to new environment. Anyway RTM is meant to give the opportunity to develop new soft and drivers before the product become officially available to the public. I think Samsung mistaked everything with this update (in bad company or not) and whether it's all Samsung's fault or not... well it doesn't change much. Still one of the most outrageous situation generated after a (small) OS upgrade.

    Hi,

I installed some new drivers from SW update yesterday, then installed W8.1, i have had no issues what so ever. I have a 880z5e btw.

For me it looks like samsung have fixed the W8.1 problem, at least for the 8805ze version.?

    Best regards

Then I would suggest you to find another notebook manufacturer that can satisfy you, cause it seems that Samsung isn't up to your standards, so the best way to solve your problem is to change another laptop.

I guess you haven't seen worst upgrades, I'm currently working on a couple of bricked retina macbook pros which are bought less than a year, all from the same issue, upgrading to maverick. Guess Apple standard sucks too ya? =)

I won't change the laptop, I've got this computer and I can/have to talk/complain about it and not of other devices I don't own. So I still can continue to say the fact that regards me: Samsung did an unacceptable mess with this update.
I'm a "power user" and I can manage this kind of issues like a geek does, but a normal or below the average user (and I know several who own this laptop) won't know how to solve it. And this is totaly absurd. Unless this laptop is on sale for geeks only (but in this case Samsung should have advertised it clearely).
    So again, shame on Samsung.

Best way is to try your luck and bring it to Samsung and tell them that your laptop just stopped working. And see what is the outcome. At least you gave it a try. Apart of that I can't think of any else that would've helped, sorry bro... =(

    Hello everybody :)

I have a 870z5-X01PT. I was very satisfied with it until the day i was listening music and my speakers beginning to do weird noises.
I have all the drivers up-to-date and im using the beta for amd.

Here's a example of what my laptop does Samsung Chronos weird noise... - YouTube
My laptop is a Ativ 8 not a Chronos and this happens randomly...

I can listen the same weird noises using headphones or just the laptop speakers so i think the problem is in the soundcard...

Can somebody help me to solve this?

I am really sorry to hear this. Sometimes bad things just happen to good people. It's not fair, but it does. I don't know if maybe a 3rd party repair shop can fix it for less than Samsung -- but you take a risk, and will probably lose your warranty for good.

Maybe with some luck Samsung will help you out and cover it under warranty. I cross my fingers for you.

Hi everyone! I bought ativ 8 np880z5e 1 week ago. I really loved this product but I found some problems:
    1. Laptop freezes sometime after switching on, at the task manager I saw over 80% RAM usage and 100 % disk.
    2. When I switch on my laptop, since I pass my password I wait for minutes.
    3. After i switched on my laptop, the size of the window where i need to type my password was in the quarter of the display(top left quarter, with bad whitish color of the display), but since I passed my login it was allright.
    4. Each different time I use my laptop it shows different RAM usage 80% or 30%. Sometimes after reload RAM usage comes to 28-30 % usage, but sometimes the reload doesnot change it (80%) it still shows the same 80 %.

PS Actually this is my second Ativ8. First one I complained with high RAM usage and they changed to a new one. But I thought the high usage of RAM came after I upgraded to windows 8.1(this was their conclusion). And we did recovery to a factory settings. But still had a high RAM usage (80-82%). And after all debates they changed to a new one with the condition if it (high RAM usage)comes again I get refund. I need fair and compitent informtion.

Please share information regarding my problems.

Haven't had the chance of testing it yet, having an important migration over the weekend, so wouldn't want to do anything to my laptop.

In which manner did you mean by lost graphical switching? Games are not switching to the AMD GPU which results in low FPS?

Is that during silent mode or some other setting you run? I also have NP780Z5E and my fans are audible, though not loud, a lot of the time when I am merely using Chrome.

Is "Intel rapid storage technology" worth keeping? I have the book 8 np880 with the samsung evo pro 512 ssd.

I did some tests about a year ago of different SATA/ATA/ATPI drivers, including Win7's built-in driver (this was before Win8), Intel's chipset driver, and the Rapid Storage driver. On my older HP laptop I decided to run without Intel Rapid Storage, but on my Samsung I decided to keep it. This was all based on HDD tests, not SSD.

Just doing raw speed tests will not give a full picture, as it also affects CPU utilization and Link State power management. A few users have found that it increased CPU utilization, although others found the opposite. The latter makes more sense, since that's what it was designed to do.

If you're looking for the slimmest possible installation, you can definitely run without it. And you may find some improvement in latencies if you do, but also some drop in disk performance. As I said, I keep it on my Sammy.

If you keep it then so will I. Thanks again.

Just as I side note .... This thread and all the contributors, particularly dannemand, have been so helpful, friendly and polite. It is this thread that made me decide to buy this model which I haven't regretted. On another thread on NBR (sony vaio pro) there are innocent people asking relevant questions but are abused for not searching properly or being more specific. I'm trying out find out about this notebook to buy for my wife and yet I feel intimidated to ask a question. Keep up the great work here guys.

I'm getting new ram, vengeance 1600MHz 8gb. Has anyone had experience with this and if it works well with this computer? Also, with the new touch pad driver my 3 finger and 4 finger options are gone any one else with the same problem? And finally, is there a fix yet to the keyboard lighting and the sensor? I hate how the back lit just turns off when I want it on!

The new upgrade took them away but ..... Go to c:\program files\elantech and run etdsimplui (not the one ending in win8) and you can reset them there.

Hi everyone! I bought ativ 8 np880z5e 1 week ago. I really loved this product but I found some problems:
    1. Laptop freezes sometimes after switching on, at the task manager I saw over 80% RAM usage and 100 % disk.
    2. Sometimes when I switch on my laptop, since I pass my password I wait for minutes.
    3. Once, after i switched on my laptop, the size of the window where i need to type my password was in the quarter of the display(top left quarter, with bad whitish color of the display), but since I passed my login it was allright.
    4. Each different time I use my laptop it shows different RAM usage 80% or 30%. Sometimes after reload RAM usage comes to 28-30 % usage, but sometimes the reload doesnot change it still shows the same 80 %.

PS Actually this is my second Ativ8. First one I complained with high RAM usage and they changed to a new one. But I thought the high usage of RAM came after I've upgraded to windows 8.1(this was their conclusion). And we did recovery to a factory settings. But still had a high RAM usage (80-82%). And after all debates they changed to a new one with the condition if it (high RAM usage)comes again I get refund. I need fair and compitent informtion before i make a solution.
Last 2 days i don't have a high RAM usage. Why its like taht?

Please share information regarding my problems.

If IntelliMemory is installed then uninstall it and see if your problems go away. It is a caching program that should give benefits if you are using an HDD and is meant to release RAM if other programs want to use it. It is available through SW Update if you want to install it again. Or maybe someone uninstalled IntelliMemory before sending you the second computer.

Thank you. It really IS the whole crowd of members here in the Samsung forum that makes it such a great place. John and I have the benefit of watching all posts coming through; but as you have surely noticed, we only respond to a fraction of the posts. Most answers come from other regulars (I don't want to single out names, they vary from one thread to another). And even from new members who just found a solution and decided to post it here.

That said, I would be lying if I were to pretend that I never get tired of answering the same questions -- particular in cases when the answer is just a few posts up, and a new member claims to have been searching for hours. I think it is completely legitimate for any member to point such questions in the right direction, as long as it is done respectfully. On some days, I simply cannot contain a hint of snark in such responses, but I am not proud of that

Waiting to upgrade to 8.1 ... SW Update is offering 7 new items to install in the "All Software" category and no upgrades. Why is SW Update offering Chipset driver, sound driver, touchpad driver, etc as new installation rather than an upgrade? It also appears that there are many fewer items listed under "Al Software" than there were several weeks ago. Is it safe to install these items and then update to 8.1? Thanks.
