Also I noticed that some apps, even if you set them to high performance....for example Chrome is still uses the Intel Graphics. Run a 3d benchmark and the gpu usage of the Amd jumps immediately.

The Intel GPU is probably no slower for 2D graphics (which include web browsers and office apps). The discrete GPU pulls ahead on 3D graphics because of its ability to do a lot more parallel processing.

On the topic of sound, I want to share this great amp app: viper4Windows
    ViPER4Windows | ViPER's Audio
It boosted the sound from the speakers a ton and kept it clear. Be sure to activate it and increase the volume.
Finally, I don't have to use an external speaker when I watch a movie. Yeah!

Yes, I posted about the audio driver and the bluetooth driver failing just a couple of pages back. Sound still works, and I don't really use bluetooth on my notebook for anything, so I'm not sure what (if anything) I am missing.

Sorry just got back to this. Its not the *external* monitor that's a problem (it runs fine at 1440p), its the laptops own screen thats the issue. And its driving me mad. Any solid colour background and the flicker is immediately obvious. This is running Win 8.1, 1080 at 60hz - p. Any solutions to this? Is it driver? Windows 8.1? Bust laptop?

Hi all - I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question. If not, please let me know where it would be better suited!
I love the laptop but whenever I plug in headphones (have tried two different types), and raise the volume above 40%, it becomes so distorted and unintelligible. It's like it is somehow too loud, but the audio isn't loud enough below the 40% mark. I've tried re-installing audio drivers without success.
    Thank you!

    hei guys,

benchmarked my laptop with the free edition of 3dmark 2011 and got 3447 with 13.12 beta, amd overdrive enabled; what do you guys are getting in the same bench?

Do you have this issue with different programs? VLC video player for instance should never have its volume past 100% (the half-way point) or it will create distortion.
Volume can be a little confusing because there are application and system (plus amp if installed) volumes.
As I posted just above, I just had great success with the Viper4Windows amp.

Some time ago when I first installed 13.12 WHQL from AMD I run 3dmark11 (free version, performance 1280x720) and got around 3440 points. No AMD overdrive whatsoever, just stock clocks.

Hey guys, question involving ram upgrade. I know theres a latch and how to install. But I bought some PNY ram from best buy. 1600 1.5v, just normal stuff. Put it in and windows wouldn't boot. Took it out and all is fine. So I take it that the PNY ram isn't compatable. But I cant find an actual list of compatable ram anywhere for my Samsung ativ book 8. I have ordered and will be getting Monday Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory. Now I am hoping this works. But do any of you have suggestions, answers, first hand knowledge. Am I doing something wrong putting it in? I push the button on the bottom with a paper clock, open the hatch and put ram in. Its snug and tight and I don't force it. Just worried as once I open the new egg purchased one its a restocking fee, which is why I went best buy route first. But I don't see why the PNY ram didn't work.

LeeKM 13.12 Driver got that also.

My results are similar. Iam a little bit disappointed that OC (850/1250/20%) doesn't make a greater difference.
It would be interesting to know if OC via MSI afterburner (for example) performs better or not °_°

zirkus, yeah supposedely if you can edit voltage settings you can go further, but I'm not willing to risk that. Acounting that this is a really thin, gorgeous laptop, he still plays heavy games like a champ!
cool that after an year this laptop was first anounced I don't think, to the best of my knowledge, of such a powerhouse in a slim and professional looking chassis ;)

probably the drivers got corrupted somehow...uninstall CCC, run ccleaner (only a suggestion), reboot and reinstall.

zlThomasiz, for me it works installing the DX9 fix by the user MacHater in the Sager/Clevo thread - download, follow the instructions on the first page and it should be activated

That's right. But imho it is a little effort. I had more problems with leshcat drivers for example. So i prefer LeeKM.

Yes, you are right. I won't take the risk either. I love this Notebook.
But the question wasn't about to go higher with parameters, just to change the tool. (Ya.. It shouldn't make a difference.. but who knows :))

from what I read somewhere, mantle isn't active (yet) for BF4 in the mobility drivers...

question: if we dl the driver from amd directly won't they install correctly in win 8? do we really need modded drivers?

    thx

I would be glad if you tell us about your experience with 14.1 drivers.

Yes you're right, I thought it was already active but sadly it isn't yet. I'm sure it will come soon though.

It seems AMD still hasn't fixed the enduro in its newest drivers. No matter what I do I can't get it to work properly with the non-modded drivers.

I've only tested BF4 and CS:GO. Performance is great.

I did some benchmarks with that LeeKM 14.1 driver:

fire strike, cloud gate & ice storm
AMD Radeon HD 8870M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3635QM,SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. NP770Z5E-S01DE
As you can see the driver has some problems with that ice storm benchmark. Don't know why it is 57k behind my score @ 13.12 AMD Radeon HD 8870M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3635QM,SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. NP770Z5E-S01DE
    I tested it twice.

    3dmark11
13.12: AMD Radeon HD 8870M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3635QM,SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. NP770Z5E-S01DE
14.1: AMD Radeon HD 8870M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3635QM,SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. NP770Z5E-S01DE
So here the 14.1s are ahead by 300pts.

Now I will do some games but probably I won't notice a difference.
update: some titles like DayZ, Tomb Raider and Dead Island won't start (crash while starting, error msg), so for now Iam back at 13.12 :)

Im sorry if this is a bad post, but I am getting tired of my notebook. I've recently bought a Samsung Ativ Book 8 with 8870m 2GB (NP880Z5E-X01NL). Since the HDD was really slow I bought an SSD. I dislike windows 8, so I installed windows 7. At first I ran SW Update and installed everything required. It was all working good, however fps were bad.. Diablo 3 21FPS. I checked the settings in amd software and noticed it was set on High Performance. The driver ther was 9.3.5.

After reading through the internet, people said to install different driver for better performance. When I tried uninstalling the AMD Catalst software via normal windows 7 boot, I got a bluescreen once it calls the graphics card.r I went into safemode and removed the AMD software.

The Intel driver is installed from SW Update. However when I try to install any driver (LeekM for example), I get a bluescreen.. It starts installation, calls for graphics card and bluescreen... This happens 100% of the time at the same point. It starts to annoy me allot now!

Is there any way to update this video driver and let me use it proper with some decent fps while gaming?!

How to upgrade to official non-samsung drivers:

    1. Update your intel HD4000 drivers through SW update if they are not up-to-date. Mine are up to date!

    2. Go to programs and features and run AMD Catalyst install manager. Check "Express Uninstall all AMD software" and run it.
Reboot after it's done. During this Uninstall I got a bluescreen. To be sure everything was removed, I booted in safemode, and removed it all with a driver cleaner (only graphics AMD driver).

2.b Only do this step if you're usig LeekM's drivers: disable driver signature enforcement and reboot. Explained by LeekM himself here: http://leekms.blogspot.kr/2013/11/ho...signature.html Windows 7, not required.

    3. Download the AMD drivers from the links above Done.

    4. Install them. During install of driver bluescreen.

    Thank you in advance.

ps; I am at work now so I can't test it now, I will read all, but I will try it out tonight.

Yeah it certainly isn't the most stable driver. The only reason I would want to keep it if it supported mantle but sadly it doesn't yet.

Do you have dayz standalone? How does it run on the 8870m? I'm considering to buy it.

The guides I wrote in the OP are for windows 8. Since I haven't tested another OS I can't garantuee they work for windows 7 or 8.1.

The laptop and the drivers written for it are designed for win8 and 8.1.
If you want the laptop to run great it might be an idea to reconsider win8. I'm a power user and at first I hated it, a lot. But when I installed startisback I really started to enjoy it. Win8 is beautiful imo. The new file explorer is awesome. Once you install startisback or an alternative windows 8 becomes windows 7 with a few great updates. That and support will be massively improved.

If you want to stay with win7, make sure you have ran the performance checklist with the driver that does work: silent mode off, performance power mode, plugged in.

It doesn't run fine. The engine is (atm) crappy. There have to be huge improvements until we are able to enjoy it. Now that you've mentioned it I will take another look these day(s/z) ;)

I will install windows 8... I can install windows 8.1 but are all drivers correct? What is most stable OS / driver for the ativ book 8 in order to keep all functionality (brightness/backlight/battery life/switchable gfx) etc...?

Most common games I will play are; wow; cs:go; lol; hearthstone; diablo3; simcity 2013; fifa14.

All right but don't blame me if you decide you don't like it after all :D.

Win 8.1, I think, has most driver problems solved. However, battery life is a lot worse than win8 and installing graphics drivers still seem tricky.

Win8 has perfect support and has 100% perfect drivers. I'd say, start off with win 8. If you're not statisfied with it you can afterwards still upgrade to 8.1 for free.

IMHO these days you shouldn't get problems with 8.1. I just installed all the drivers which are offered by Samsung SW plus an ATI driver of my choice. I prefer LeeKm 13.12.
AFAIK it is recommended that you first install all the Samsung SW stuff and then upgrade to 8.1.

    (i run a np770z5e)

I don't see this issues with my machine.. on the other hand there there isn't much on 8.1 for which it is worth to take "more risk".

    That's it!

I prefer win 8.1 over 8.0 - right click the start button to get common functions, and boot to desktop options are the best reasons.
The only thing I lost going to 8.1 was the intel WIDI feature that the 8.1 drivers don't support, but that feature is not needed with DLNA support and HDMI port.

How exactly does win 8.1 reduce battery times over win 8.0 like some people have reported?

If people don't like windows 8 or 8.1, then set to boot straight to desktop, set the left click on the start button to go straight to the start screen instead of the tile interface, don't set up a windows store account, disable the touch screen in the 'settings' app, and move on with life.

I'm very happy with this computer (one with 8770M plays any game I own) and I don't think I could have done any better with another choice.

Or just get one of the many 3rd party Start Menu products for Win8. Some are free, some cost a few bucks. In addition to providing a traditional Start Menu (so you can open new tasks without switching away from the current context) most of them allow you to boot straight to Desktop and select which other Win8 features to enable/disable (hot corners, Charms menu, etc).

That said, if I were forced to run without a Start Menu, I too would prefer Win8.1 over Win8, because of the booting straight to Desktop AND the ability to configure Start Screen to display All Apps by default (with Metro apps last). That way it becomes a more useful (or less annoying, if you want) substitute for the Start Menu. That's just me because I never use Metro apps.

what about following following steps? I had same problems as you.
so checked these are written on the manual.
    1. Right-click on the Desktop and select Configure Switchable Graphics from the popup menu.
    2. click the Browse button and register the software and click the Apply button.
    3. some of the functions of the registered program that require a high graphics performance will
run with the external graphics chipset without additional configuration.
hope it would be useful :D

Last night I installed windows 8. It all went smooth, installed all drivers from SW update except amd. Used 13.12 from LeekM for that. Went good without bluescreen. Started downloading games, but was too late, so I stopped. Tonight I continue! :)

I don't use 'modern UI' apps either. The touch screen and immersive app concept is fine for small screens you hold in your hand. It takes away the windows multitasking concept and puts it back to the DOS days of each program having control like a mini operating system that works according to the concept of the creator of that particular program. The universal recognizable operating system controls are what made Windows so popular and useful without a learning curve for each interface. The thing that kills the need for a touch screen on the Ativ Book 8 is the excellent touch pad. The kicker is multitouch controls like 2finger scroll, pinch to zoom, and 2finger tap for right click. If it didn't have these I would be jabbing at the screen for a more convenient way to scroll.

I have an older series 7 Chronos myself (NP700Z3A) and like you, I absolutely love that touchpad -- for exactly the reasons you mention (2finger scroll and 2finger right-click in particular).

So I made the USB recovery image, put the 840 EVO into my computer, checked the bios to make sure the computer recognized the SSD, but when i boot from the USB cms, i just get a flashing _, and when I boot from the USB in UEFI it loads the recovery software, goes to "Please Wait" and then 10 minutes later it just restarts the computer, What am i doing wrong?

You definitely don't want to use CSM mode. Either OS Mode Selection=UEFI OS or UEFI & CSM OS. You probably want to disable SecureBoot, though some members reported that wasn't even necessary. Also disable Fast Boot/Fast BIOS (you probably already did that).

In Windows, does the USB stick show up as Removable Disk or a Fixed (Local) Disk? If it shows up as Fixed Disk, then unfortunately it is not compatible with Samsung Recovery. Most recent SanDisk drives work this way, and they have been promoting this to other drive vendors too.

Also, there has been speculation that USB2 sticks may be safer for this than USB3 sticks (not the sticks in themselves, but because Samsung Recovery is a little behind the times) but I have nothing solid on that. Did you backup using F4 Recovery or the Samsung Recovery app in Windows? I could understand if a USB3 stick works better if backed up in the Windows app.

If it shows up as Removable Disk (like it should) and if you cannot make it work using neither UEFI OS nor UEFI & CSM OS, then I suppose the backup could be corrupt. If it took a long time to backup (say, more than 30mins) that could be a sign of a bad backup.

Please keep us posted. If there is anything to learn here, I want to add it to the guides.

Got it, thank you. You did all your homework, it really should work as far as I can tell.

We've had several reports lately about SRS being finicky with these backups -- I don't like that. Backups are supposed to be solid, not shaky like this.

Again thanks for keeping us posted. I am very interested!

Edit: Wait, are you saying you backed up to a disk drive? If so, that's why it didn't work. Bootable backups have to be to a USB flash drive -- and it has to act as a removable drive. Don't I ask me why, but that's how it always was with SRS.
