I'm using 10.18.10.3304. You should really try the beta 14.6 if you play Watch Dogs, I used the 14.4 and even in the lowest settings I was getting a lot of FPS drops but from what i've read online this is due to the optimization of the game to AMD drivers.

Sorry for my grammar, english isn't my native language.

When I install 14.6 on w8.1 on my NP870Z5E the lock screen image becomes gray and glitchy, this doesn't happen to anyone else? Running latest Intel drivers.

I'm getting that also on my lock screen but since it doesn't affect the general performance I forgot to mention on my post. That's the deal with beta drivers I guess. I remember when I installed the 14.4 beta it was way much glitchy and buggy.

I'm not sure if it's just a problem with beta drivers, since it happened to me when i installed the Update 1 for Windows 8.1, before I updated the drivers on SW Update.

did you just install the 10.18.10.3304 over the old intel driver? Because when i tried to install it I got a message: "This driver has not been validated for this computer, Please attain the correct driver from the manufacturer."

No. I did a clean install on that one. Removed the old driver and then installed the new one.

Wow, I didn't know AutoCAD was dating back to the 80's :p good to know xD

Anyway, yeah, it only happened while using CAD so far :( I will have to find out how to investigate how this software uses my VGA to work out a solution. For now, I'm just going to lay back and enjoy my weekend :p thank you :D

I just did another round of e-mails to Samsung about the missing extra memory issue, this time I also contacted the Korean support desk and the USA support desk next to my local support desk in the Netherlands. Let's wait what their response will be.

If anyone else with the issue also could contact them (again), perhaps this time they would do something about it to get it fixed. Otherwise I'll have to buy a new memory module which hopefully will work in my notebook since I'm in need of those extra 8GB of memory :(.

Ok just to clarify now, i want to install Watch Dogs. So 14.5 doesn't work well, 14.6 does. Is there any general other issues with 14.6 or is it fine without any major issues?

I was wondering if anyone replaced 8870m for 8970m, it should be quite an improvement in terms of performance. Is it even possible - incompatible architecture perhaps - or it would be too hard to replace existing GPU? I also wonder if 8970m would overheat since 8870m already warms quite a lot.

    Hi pranktank!

I'm also quite busy with my exams, but still couldn't resist trying the new 14.6 driver for the Mantle support. It turned out to be a disappointment. Contrary to what AMD suggests on their website, Enduro wasn't functional after the update ('configure switchable graphics' menu was missing and the fan behaviour indicated dedicated GPU activity) and my screen had some weird resolution issues, so I reverted back to 13.10. It's a shame really, but then again AMD doesn't guarantee anything when it comes to notebook hardware and driver support. Hopefully we can get Mantle to work eventually... :)

Oh, and by the way, thanks for this wonderful thread, it has made my life a lot easier with all kinds of driver and optimization related matters for my beloved Chronos. This is still one of the best notebooks you can get and in my eyes definitely a MacBook Pro killer, especially if upgraded with an SSD :)

Replacing GPUs in notebooks is rarely possible and I'm quite sure it is not an option for this laptop. I even think the HD 8870m chip is soldered onto the motherboard.
Even it is was possible the heat development would be too much for this laptop, as you suggested. The HD 8970m has a maximum power consumption (and heat output - it's essentially the same) of about 100 Watts, while the HD 8870m only consumes half of that...

I got the official 14.6beta to work on win8.1 with switchable graphics, just following my normal procedure for updating drivers. I had to update to windows 8.1 though, 14.6 doesn't seem to work on windows 8.
Mantle works, I only had time to play on one map but the performance improvement was defiinitely noticeable.

No, I turned it off to go to bed and couldn't turn it back on. The emmc chip probably died. Luckily it's still under warranty. I haven't had time to send it out for repair yet.

Can you confirm please that the screen burn in (image retention/persistence) is not present at all in the new panel ?? did you perform a test for various minutes in full brightness, with a static image and without screen saver ?? if you can do that, it will be great information, considering that a lot of people here have this issue and are not sure about sending the laptop for a repair.

That is really weird, since I'm also running Windows 8.1. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I uninstalled my 13.10 driver with the AMD Cleanup Utility since trying to do it the normal way yielded a missing file error. I think I'll try it again later...

I'm positively surprised that the performance gains with Mantle are noticeable. I figured the GPU would be the largest bottleneck in most scenarios, but hey, if performance increases I'm happy... if I get Mantle to work that is.

Thanks for confirming that the driver works, I wouldn't have tried installing it a second time otherwise.

I have something to add to the first post. About the error of loading webpages, if you uninstall samsung support center you will never have problems with it again. I don't know if this info is mentioned in the thread but it should be added to the FAQ I think.

I've got my first graphical issues with 14.6 in FIFA 14 and The Wolf Among Us. Same problem, the players in FIFA and the characters in Wolf seem to lose layers in the textures (they look like Walking Dead zombies btw, fun at first kind of annoying 5 minutes after). Downgraded to 14.4 :(

    HI ,

I think the problem might come from the device you are using on the usb port, if it's an external harddrive try to defragment it ,if it's an USB key maybe the flash chip are tired or too hot (high usage can cause this)

In case you don't use a SSD in your computer try to defragment it or it may be too full to achieve its best speed.

What sort of USB device? HDD or flash drive. Is that read speed or write speed or both? How are you measuring the speed?

Make sure that the device policy is set to "Better Performance" in Device Manager.

its a sony 32gb 3.0 drive. Both the read and write speeds have been slow. But i checked the drive with other laptops the transfer speeds are great john. i checked it through the amount of time it takes to transfer.

If it runs faster on the other computers then we will have to blame your Samsung which gives the impression that it has reverted to USB 2.0 speed.

Many years ago there was a common problem with the ATA interface which, if there were a few errors, would drop into PIO mode. Maybe USB has something similar.

What happens if you uninstall the flash drive in Device Manager then let Windows redetect it?

You want to repeatedly bug and bother Samsung about this, in the hope that they will fix it. The problem only occurs with some types of RAM, since some members reported no issues using their full 16GB, while others found the 8GB they added have disappeared. In a way, that is unfortunate, since Samsung would be more likely to fix it if the problem were consistent.

I don't have a list, but you can search back in this thread for reports from those who have it working. Or you can contact Samsung for an approved list to get them on the hook. Of course they could say this is not user upgradeable, but I don't think they will. They have acknowledged to other members who contacted them that this was an issue.

Perfect. So you already got them on the hook for that. Now they need to tell you which RAM will work. This, in itself, will give a bump to the BIOS guys who should be working to fix this.

    Hi everyone!
I've had a weird problem for about a week, and I can't figure out the cause nor a solution. Sometimes, it happens that after a shutdown, when I boot again I can't hear any sound from the notebook, even if I bring the volume to 100; even if I plug some headphones I can't hear any sound. Then, if I reboot the sounds work again.
Seeing that rebooting solved the problem, I disabled the "Fast Startup" in "Power Options --> Choose what the power buttons do", thinking that maybe something in the hybrid shutdown wasn't working properly, but I've just had the problem again even with a full shutdown.
What would you do to fix this?

Hey, I've had the Samsung 7 Chronos 17 inch version ( 770Z7E i think, same as 770Z5E but larger screen, don't know if that matters much) for about a year now, and I've been noticing heating problems when playing any game, even games that aren't really gpu intensive (Dota 2 mostly).
The first 20 seconds are allright, then the fps drops hugely and my GPU temp skyrockets to 90-98 degrees Celsius. I haven't had this issue before and it's been occurring the last month.
Anyone else having trouble with this? And any ideas on how to fix this? I haven't found any people in this thread with temperature problems, neither have I found any on Google.
I have the stock ati 13.10 drivers installed, about to try the 14.4 whql driver.

The little flap on the Ethernet port has broken off. Bad move on my part using the machine on my lap with the Ethernet connected. Put a little too much pressure on the flap.

Even if I took the back off, not sure if I could find a new flap and if I could slip it in. Any suggestions on fixing it? I'd rather not start carrying around a usb 3.0 Ethernet adapter.
