Does anyone have an inkling why my E: drive should have stopped showing up under "computer"? I also can't open CD/DVDs using any program.

Try uninstalling the second IDE channel then let windows redetect it and and the connected device).

Otherwise there are some software package that can cause the optical drive to disappear. Google for missing optical drive.

Thanks. I tried deleting the upper/lower filters from the registry as described, but didn't work, though I know it works in a lot of cases. The drive is not recognised in the BIOS. Samsung think the hardware has malfunctioned so it's going in to be serviced.
