So I am hearing mixed here. You say it works (and you have done it). GeorgeCK says it doesn't. So which is it?

The first one might work although you may need to cut off the two lugs nearest the other edge of the computer. The other two are made for replacing optical drives that have a face plate.

It may be worth noting that I have the Z5A, while you have the Z7C. I have no idea whether the optical drive and bay are the same in both models.

Uff ok guys I decided to don't use 1tb hdd and use just ssd insted, for downloads and managing the big files I willl use external hdd,I will save 1tb in original state untoched in case I need warranty or selling,so my final question I will not bothering you anymore here,so if I need warranty or something procedure for putting back hdd is: my system bios setting are now fast bios is disabled, secure boot is disabled and cmos os is enabled originaly uefi os was enabled while hdd was inside so when I put back hdd I need to enter bios again and enabled uefi os again right before booting the os from hdd and later after I boot os from hdd I can enable fast bios again and secure boot is this correct way to go back to hdd again

You should be able to re-enable the Fast BIOS option now the SSD is running - it skips checking for bootable USB devices. I can't firmly comment on the other settings but, sensibly, if you put the HDD back in then you should put the BIOS back to the original settings.

Also, you can put the 1TB drive into a USB (preferably USB 3.0) enclosure and use it for extra storage without affecting it being a bootable drive.

I like your suggestion for external enclosure,I will do like that, just I'm not sure what you mean with this I can enable again fast bios again it skip checking us devices,my boot time is now 9 seconds not sure how fast bio enabled option can help at this time with ssd running, plus I think I lost 8gb ssd cashe but I'm ok with that I tought fast bios option is for 8gb ssd motherborard cashe only

The Fast BIOS option should save a little more time because the BIOS spends less time checking the system before starting Windows.

The 8GB cache is no loss: it is slower than the SSD. See this thread for how it works.

Yes. A standard 2.5" enclosure gets enough power through the USB cable. USB 3.0 is several times faster than USB 2.0.

It comes without the fascia mounted so it might fit into the space in the chassis. If not, you can always file off some of the caddy near the outside edge of the computer.

Alternatively, consider a caddy such as this that is designed for the unibody Apple Macbook (but those fixing tabs might need removing).

Thanks for your advise John will get the one you suggested now. I've seen the disassembly guide which I think is superb but any ideas how to go about the config with the build in ssd? I want to use my Samsung SSD for booting and the OS and then use the 1TB drive for data. Shoudl the SSD go in the caddy or the original disk?

    Many Thanks

The optical bay is SATA II, so you definitely want the SSD to replace the HDD, and the HDD to go in the caddy. I cloned my OS from the HDD to the SSD using EasyGig IV cloning software and a data transfer cable, but I think that software only works on Crucial SSDs.

    Hey everyone,

I was planning to install an SSD and get rid off the optical drive, too. Can you tell me how installing a 2nd drive (HDD + SSD) affected your battery life?

My model is: NP700Z5A S07 (bought in Germany).

    Thanks in advance!

The NewModeus caddies are meant to be good quality.

However, if you damaged a cable or one of the drives isn't connected properly then that can stop the boot process.

Is the computer completely dead without a hint of life when you press the power button or does the power light come on but nothing else happens. The latter suggests that the power is OK but a hardware issue is stopping the BIOS from running. If so, remove both drives and any removal RAM module and see if the computer will boot into the BIOS.

That does look like you upset a power cable. If you are very lucky then something became disconnected and is fixable.

Otherwise it's off to a service center.

I left my laptop in a technical assistance and they said the problem was caused by a short in the motherboard and that can be caused by the 2nd hard drive or SSD Caddy for Samsung Series 7, NP700 series. :(

    Now I have a prejudice of U$ 280.

    Hello all,

This is a continuation of the discussion I've been having in the "disassembly" thread, where having broken my HDD connector, I replaced the optical drive with a caddy and the computer won't boot.

I can install Windows from USB, have no problems with the ExpressCache, the drive is listed correctly in the BIOS, but each boot a blank boot list greets me, with the only option available being the BIOS settings in the "Apps" tab.

Is it a limitation that one can't boot from the ODD SATA port?

Perhaps the ODD port has been configured to only recognise removable disks (CD / DVD) as bootable devices.

This would be unusual but we know that Samsung notebooks are a little fussy about which type of flash drive to boot from.

That's what I was afraid of. I wonder if anyone in this thread has managed to boot from it with another HDD in the other bay. Perhaps something to do with the detection of both ports. Would any BIOS changes be able to make a difference do you think?

Have you tried the Esc or F10 (whichever works for your model) at the BIOS screen to get a one-time boot menu?

I think we're talking about the same menu - the grey box that has two windows "Boot Menu" and "App Menu". App Menu just has the BIOS setup, and Boot Menu (where I presume the boot options should be shown) is blank. It comes up automatically, presumably because it can't find the Windows Installation on the drive.
