That's interesting because it's a 35W quad-core. I don't know how it will affect the possibility of throttling though (does the lower TDP mean less heat produced or lower ceiling room for stable clocks, or both??)
It depends on whether its memory is DDR3 or GDDR5.
If DDR3, then it's only a little faster than the older GT 650M, or around the HD 8770M.
If GDDR5 then it's faster than the GTX 660M, or the HD 8850M.
Either way it's not as good as the HD 8870M, you have to go up to the GTX 760M to reach that performance.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M - NotebookCheck.net Tech
The description says 2 GB. Since the max memory for the GT 750M is 4 GB (overkill!!??) 2GB means it's probably DDR3...

Unfortunately XPS15/m3800 has a big delay to delivery, in this moment delivery date is 30 January cause 3200X1800 screen shortage.
I wonder if X02 means that there will be a X01 with a better GPU. -
The news in this thread made me order the 870z5e while stocks last.
Too bad Samsung went for the 750. I don't mind the 4702HQ (which is a very good choice IMO due to the lower TDP), but the 750 was a deal breaker. The only positive going for it is the excellent Nvidia Optimus graphics switching and better driver support. Otherwise the 8870 is the better card and a billion times better for CAD work.
By the waythe XPS15 (why does it lack a numpad??????) over here costs twice as much as the 870.... No wonder the 870 stocks are depleted at a crazy rate -

I would note that Samsung UK have a tradition of ordering relatively low spec models from the factory, so the UK spec of 4702HQ+ GT750M is probably not the best that can be ordered.
The key factor to consider is that the power requirement should not be greater than the highest spec version of the Z5E (and ideally a bit lower to avoid any risk of throttling).
John -
As has been said, Samsung UK almost always order the low spec versions. But also nVidia Geforce 800m series is coming in february according to new sources. Lets hope for a haswell + 860m GTX. -
I have heard something about Samsung going to finish laptop business, because it is not going to them. Is anything true of it?

Samsung have the problem that, because they make both components as well as notebooks, other manufacturers periodically complain about Samsung having an unfair advantage. This may be one factor. The shrinking market for notebooks is another. If they can make more profit from phones and tablets then notebooks may take a back seat.
Let's see what they have on offer at CES.

I think you might be confusing it with them killing their desktop business (no wonder, it doesn't have a display on it), but that was a rumor and Samsung denied it. Even if they kill it they will still make the monitors.Atom Ant likes this. -

I hear you Mac. If whatever is announced isn't on the market within a certain time frame, I'll be getting the XPS 15 as well.

What is it about Haswell that is compelling? Series 7 already has great battery life and performance increase is neglible at best ( and if they stick with 4702 across all models is worse )...

I have paid around 1600€ (with coupons) for XPS15 with 512GB SSD, 3200X1800 screen, 16GB ram, Wi-Fi AC and NFC, while in my market the Ativ Book 8 is priced around 1500€ but with only 1TB HDD, 8GB ram, Wi-Fi N and no NFC (both system are touch screen) also I have also a warranty of 1 year home service with Dell and XPS15 weights around 0.5Kg less than Ativ Book 8.
In many games there is no difference between GT750m and 8870m.QuantumPSI likes this. -
You are probably better off going with ASUS, Lenovo, or hp before Dell, I am not sure about the quality of their current lineup, but it was garbage the last couple of years.

This thing is probably the best 15.6'' Notebook yet, With 2880X1620 (1.5 X 1080p) although it probably doesn't have touchscreen and is a bit older but still has a large battery (70WHr) for something weighing only 4lb. It also has 650M 2GB GDDR5, which is faster them 750M due to DDR3 on it I believe. Te biggest issue is the price though at $2600 -

Hmm, quality is such a convoluted term though. For me, when I think quality, my top priority is the computer continuing to work at 100% as day one. Using that criteria alone, HP is more likely to fail than the others (which is why, regardless of the specs, I'll never buy one at 25.6% failure rate). Asus and Toshiba are top, and Dell is right behind Apple. Further, I have a dell I purchased in 2005 that JUST died earlier this year and it wasn't even a full death (the inverter stopped working, which is a $20 part off ebay). I have/had an exotic Sager high end machine that is completely worthless now (won't even turn on, lasted 4 years, started to go around 3). Found the data here 3 Year Laptop Malfunction Rates By Manufacturer | Statistic Brain
I don't need top performing speakers, trackpad, keyboard, chassis, etc. As long as all the aforementioned items are at acceptable levels, I'm a happy camper. Granted, I'll take note if I encounter something that is better, but it wouldn't be enough to not purchase a given laptop. My only complaint about Dell is their support will jerk you around if you let them, however, the device themselves, I'm quite happy with. So far, the XPS 15 will be my purchase unless I see Samsung put out something at CES and is available to buy shortly after. -
I did look at the xps 15 and liked that it was a pound lighter but it looked and felt too much like plastic to me. It was also several hundred dollars more expensive than my book 8 after configuring with 16 gig of RAM and Samsung 840 Pro SSD. The book 8 appears to have much better build quality in my opinion... But this is a 'Haswell Series 7 Chronos' thread not a Dell XPS 15 thread so my question was really in reference to what does Haswell bring to the Book 8 - it certainly is not performance and battery life is already great...

Honestly Tony, for me it's the screen and weight (and slightly the GPU). Having experienced the retina display and then using my old computer with 1920 x 1200, I really want a high res screen. Further, the weight of the MBP really impressed me. I hear what you're saying about battery life and Haswell, but I would still prefer to have it if I can. I am truly hoping for a machine comparable to the XPS 15 and MBP. I don't care for the OS on the MBP, so that leaves me with the XPS 15, hence why my comparison. If the XPS 15 was not available, the Book 8 would be my choice.
-
Thanks QuantumPSI, I certainly would prefer 4 1/2 pounds over 5 1/2 pounds but in either case we are not talking about an ultra light sub 3 pound notebook and I am not willing to give up everything else for a little weight. The screen was actually something that also compelled me away from the XPS 15 as I actually feel 1080p on a 15.6 inch screen is a bit high as it is. But if there was one perfect laptop for everyone's needs then we would not enjoy the many choices that we have today. Enjoy!

Sure Dells used to be rugged and lasted a long time like 5+ years ago but the ones from a couple of years ago are cheap junk. My brother has an Ivy Bridge one and that thing has had a lot of issues. Most of the problems had to do with overheating, and that thing doesn't even have a GPU and is as thick as a brick, yet fan wasn't working properly and sometimes stopped spinning or something like that causing it to overheat and throttle and the other issue is that their batteries are cr@p and die really fast in less than two years. As far as I can tell hp does a much better job with cooling now and that's the reason they get better scores in benchmarks with similar hardware, and other than the rare cases of motherboard failures the biggest issue with some hp laptops seems to be the crappy wireless adapters. My system is an ASUS N56DP though and this thing works great. Even with both the A10-4600M and the discrete Radeon HD7730M running at the same time under heavy load it seems to make less heat than the Dell with only a lowly Core i5 in it (you might think a bulky 15.6'' laptop shouldn't have any cooling issues with nothing more than a dual core CPU to cool but nope). Now the XPS will have a better build quality and that will lead to better thermals but in a smaller chassis with a 47W CPU and a GPU to cool I am not so sure.

Found the English Manual for this new Model:
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201312/20131211150923031/Win8.1_Manual_ENG.pdf
Looks like the current model, BIOS seems to have a tile GUI like Windows.. interesting -
NICE! I can't find any information on the screen resolution though. Either way, it looks like we have a winner! I am officially excited for CES! I hope it doesn't take long for this thing to hit the shelves.
-
anyone know if the 750m is GDDR5?
-
-
Dannemand, on my NP900X3F it wasn't - that looked like an ordinary old school BIOS
-
But maybe it's also depending on model. I played with a 2013 Series 7 at a Best Buy back in spring, and it had the tiled GUI. And we've had screen dumps posted with it here for that long as well.
Edit: For example, check this post from April 2013. -
This news is about Ativ book 9, but in Italian version of the article there are more info about something that looks more an Ativ Book 8 than an Ativ Book 9:
Purported ATIV Book 9 Style and ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition Pictures
Samsung ATIV Book 9 Style e ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition - Notebook Italia
Italian version says about a version with i7-4700HQ or i5-4200H, 8GB , HDD 750 GB or 1 TB, GT 750M 2 GB GDDR3 onboard, others news says 256GB SSD included and a version with only iGPU onboard.
Maybe the news about Ativ book 8 and 9 in Italian version are mixed. -

Ah, 870Z5G and 880Z5G just popped up in Germany:
Samsung ATIV Book 8 870Z5G X02 Notebook i5-4200H Full HD GT750M Windows 8.1
Samsung ATIV Book 8 Touch 880Z5G X01 Notebook i7-4702HQ Full HD GT750M Windows 8
The non touch version also has an i5 instead of an i7 - mhh.. -
-
Everything I have seen thus far indicates a down grade and cost reduction from the current model. As this news gets out I would expect current stock of existing model to be quickly depleted as there does not appear to be any reason to wait for the new model...

I think they went with DDR3 on the Samsung because of the lower res screen. I'm sure the high res screens on the XPS 15 and MBP made DDR5 a more appropriate decision. -

Nice to see Samsung have laptops for next year too! However if they decided switch to Nvidia, they should have pack Maxwell which available from next year February. Anyway I'll skip next year models and waiting for 2015's Broadwell 14nm with Radeon GCN 20nm...
