I can not see now which one is it, because I'm not at home. But it's the one that's create in the task scheduller automatically with rapid start instalation. I think it's RapidstartConfig.exe... I don't know if John has already tried it, but try to delay it 5 minutes by changing the setup in Task Scheduler, reboot, wait about 5 minutes counting from windows login and see if the tray icon appears (it'll only appear if you do the registry changes that John explained). If it does, then try to put maybe a 5 minute delay for the hibernation to kick in, and see if it works (in order to work, you have to put the laptop in Sleep Mode, NOT samsung fast sleep).

RapidStartConfig.exe is the only one that shows in my Task Scheduler. If it isn't there then create a Task that is set to start on the logon of any user. A delay of a few seconds should be enough. Once you have it working and can adjust the time delay then you can test it by setting a short delay, closing the lid and waiting for a little longer than that time before opening again.

Great information and very good notes on how to do it. You guys are great.

OK, I've been a good boy, followed everything in here, down to this last post. The comment about "you have to put the laptop in Sleep Mode, NOT samsung fast sleep" completely threw me. I have no idea what the distinction is.

My system (900X4C) seems to be working with IRST installed just fine except it won't hibernate, only sleep. I did not reinstall Windows, but I did delete both the hibernate and the restore partitions. Expanded the OS partition to fill the space and then reinstalled IRST. It created the partition. All of the registry settings are correct, I can manually run the irst program but it won't run from scheduler, so I just put it in the old fashioned way, I put a shortcut into the startup folder. That works and the program runs every time I restart. I can set the timer and it stays set.

Nothing seems to be wrong except for not actually hibernating. Does this have anything to do with "you have to put the laptop in Sleep Mode, NOT samsung fast sleep" ?

UPDATE - Color me embarrassed. It is working after all. it's just that it starts up from hibernation so darn fast that I didn't think it was working. Blue power light actually goes off after 2 minutes (current timer setting) and then all is dark. Resumes to Windows desktop in 7 seconds, but some things are still loading.

The battery drain issue (more than 1%) seems to indicate that it is not actually hibernating, but all the signs and indicators say that it is. How can I know for sure?

    1. Battery drain on sleep is 0.5 to 1% per hour (ie more than 5% battery charge reduction if left overnight).
    2. Resume from sleep takes no more than 3 seconds. Resume from hibernation takes more than 5 seconds, perhaps nearer 10 seconds.

Thanks John. I've come to the conclusion that it is only sleeping, even though all the other signs point to hibernation. any thoughts on the issue that Mata_Ratos closed his post with, (in order to work, you have to put the laptop in Sleep Mode, NOT samsung fast sleep) ?

Also, would you please check my "Paramaters" registry entries and see if they are as you think they should be? I'm not sure about the TimerEnabled entry. It was originally 0 and I changed it to 1. registry.png

Your registry entries are identical to mine. Other things to check:

    1. Is Intel Rapid Start Technology enabled at the bottom of the General page in Easy Settings?
    2. Is RapidStartConfig.exe running as a task in Task Manager? Also irstrtsv.exe (I have to show processes from all users to see it).

For me, IRST sleep just requires closing the computer. Then, after the time delay set by RapidStartConfig.exe (the blue button) the computer powers down and goes into hibernation. When I open the computer it wakes up. There's something at the system level which detects the lid close / open and triggers IRST because it skips both the BIOS and Windows passwords.

Again, I do appreciate your willingness to assist. Your questions:

    1. Is Intel Rapid Start Technology enabled at the bottom of the General page in Easy Settings? Yes it is

    2. Is RapidStartConfig.exe running as a task in Task Manager? Yes it is as evidenced by the icon on task bar and my ability to configure the timer.

    3. Also irstrtsv.exe (I have to show processes from all users to see it). Yes, it shows in Task Manager as both a running service and a running process.

I do not see either the BIOS or the Windows password prompts when I resume the computer either. I'm wondering if there is any other thing that I may be missing.

What about the question I had on the issue that Mata_Ratos closed his post with, (in order to work, you have to put the laptop in Sleep Mode, NOT samsung fast sleep) ? Do you have any idea what that was referring to?

I don't know. In Easy Settings you should have all the fast options enabled.

Note that it is very quick to test if hibernation is working: If you set the RapidStartConfig timer to 0 it means go to hibernation immediately on shutting the computer (ie closing the display). Wait a minute then open the display. If there are several seconds of black screen on opening then the hibernation is working - there's about one second of black screen if the computer is sleep. The final test is then being left overnight on battery (check the battery charge level before shutting).

I have a new 5 series and I want to thank the contribs on this thread. I was sure it wasn't using IRST either - I even did a reinstall - and after a day's playing with it, I have it working.

I've tried everything - disabling hibernation, rebuilding the partitions on the SSD etc- and was resigned to having a "regular" hibernation file on the HDD.

But it turns out that the Rapid Start Manager software wasn't running. I ran it, I now have the blue power icon in the system tray, and it hibernates to the SSD properly.

To those with a series 9 who don't know if it's hibernating or not, I assume you don't have like I do a blue sleep LED that slowly flashes in sleep mode? Because when mine hibernates, initially all the lights come on as it writes to the SSD and then all the lights go out. That way I know it's done it.

I just wish there was a way to force the machine to Rapid Start hibernation, as there used to be in the "old days" of having hibernate as a shutdown option.

    Thanks all.

    John, All -

I'm happy to report success at last. I can't really point to any changes made since my last posting except for several reboots. However, I can now say definitively that it is working. I closed the lid last night with an 80% charge and this morning it was showing 79% when I opened the lid. It took 7 seconds to come up after opening the screen.

I would like to mention that I did not go the route of a complete wipe and re-install.

    1. Using John's original instructions as a guide - I did a complete backup using 2 different programs (Samsung's and Norton Ghost) to be certain, then I deleted the Recovery partition using Disk Part and then used control panel module (Programs and Features) to delete the hibernate software.

    2. I found that I had to manually delete the 8 GB hibersys page file, but that was no trouble.

    3. That wouldn't work on the Hibernate partition so I booted from an external CD recovery disk (Ghost) and went to a command line from there and used Disk Part to delete the hibernate partition. That worked just fine.

    4. Then I rebooted into Windows and expanded the OS partition and re-installed the latest IRST software and the Easy Manager software.

    5. I fixed the registry entries as instructed.

    6. Like others, I had to change ownership of the scheduled task for launching IRST from the default Samsung computer name to my log-in name. That fixed all issues of the program not launching.

I am very impressed with this computer as well as the quality of the support and sharing on this site. You have all been a great help to me. Hope that I can return the favor someday.

I have started playing around with the idea of using one of the new SanDisk series 10 SCXC memory cards as a 2nd hard disk in my 900X4C. Got one off the web for $50 US and it went in with no problem at all. I did reformat it with the SanDisk format tool before trying to use it.

So far I have installed 3 programs to the card using the normal install procedures and simply selecting the card as the install location. They are all working just fine. This seems like a pretty easy way to gain some much needed extra storage without trying to move to a 256GB SSD.

I briefly looked into that option until I saw the speed of the SD card slot. Mine is slower than a several years old Sandisk MicroMate SD to USB adapter.

Hi, can anyone help me, I'm going round in cirlces with this Intel Rapid Start Technology problem on my NP530U3C, its driving me insane! (I know its not a Series 9 but this seems to be the expert's thread on IRST!)

I've somehow lost it and can't get it back. I had a few other issues with my machine so I used Samsung Recovery to recover Windows to initial settings. Somewhere along the way my iSSD disk has lost its hiberantion partition.

So now I have no hibernation partition and no Intel Rapid Start Technology. I've tried following the steps from the other thread but with no joy, although the Series 5 seems to use IRST version 1.0.0.1015 not sure if that makes a difference.

After doing the Samsung Recovery, IRST appears to be installed on the system (its in programs in control panel), although Easy Settings has no option to use IRST, its simply not there.

So I've tried uninstalling IRST to reinstall it....but when hen I try and install IRST from Easy Software Manager, it appears to install ok at first, however when I restart Windows I get a tray Icon with a message "The software did not install correctly, open Easy Software Manager to install the software"

If I reload Easy Software Manager and try to install IRST again then the same thing just happens again (and again and again!)

I've tried downloading IRST from the Samsung website, and running setup manually as adminstrator. However I get an error message "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for instaling this software"

AGH! Where am I going wrong? I can't get the partition created through Easy Settings as the option isn't there. And for some reason IRST won't install. I've wasted ages on this now its driving me mad!

So its a catch 22. After Samsung recovery IRST appears to be installed but there is no partition and no option in Easy Settings to use IRSt/create the partition. I can uninstall IRST but it then won't reinstall again?

Shall I just not bother? (I don't like giving up though!)

Or perhaps get an external DVD drive and start again with the Samsung disk (would this recreate the partition on the iSSD and put everything right?)

    I think mine is working...

I uninstalled IRST that was previous installed with Win7, then I install it again...
Now every time I enter the app via the icon tray it gives me an error, but after that the app enters...
Also the 8GB hibernate partition is created.
But beside that I can really say that is working like it should cause Win8 is also very quick...

Can anyone tell me if this makes any sense to install?? Any advantage?

The test for hibernation working OK is to leave the computer sleeping on battery overnight. If the battery drain is ~1% then hibernation is working. If more, then it is not. One advantage of IRST is the silent transition from sleep to hibernation after the delay set by the timer. The sleep stops without the computer waking up. Another advantage is that the hibernation partition is mapped to the RAM so whatever was active when the computer was put to sleep is loaded first.

Hi all, further to my previous post the other day, I have managed to get IRST back on my laptop and a Hibernation Partition on my iSSD through a Recovery it reappeared.

IRST is installed and I can load the manager for it. When I close the lid the laptop sleeps, and after the set time appeared to go into hibernation. However when I open the lid after hibernation, I get a "Windows did not shut down correctly error message". It's happens every time after it has hibernated with IRST. I've seen some people reefer to this on this thread but haven't seen a solution? Is it BIOS related?

One weird thing.... My laptop (Series 5 NP530u3C) has 6 GB RAM. however the hibernate partition is only 4.5GB? Is that's what's causing the problem? I thought the hibernation partition needed to be the same size or greater as the ram?

If I make the partition bigger will this fix the problem? Anyone talk me through this as I'm a bit clueless when it comes to partitions? What software will do it (I tried one but it didn't see to be able to do anything with the iSSD partitions...)

    Thanks for any help

hmm then I don't think that IRST is installed correctely.
Yesterday when I returned to the laptop, it eat 8% of the battery.

But that just happen when I was with win7. Never got only 1% of drain over night...Maybe something is missing
I only got that 1% in my other previous laptops, but without the IRST installed (no support for that) and doing a normal hibernation shutdown

Unless Samsung have fixed it recently, the installer doesn't get RapidStartConfig.exe running. You need that to set the time-out for the transition from sleep to hibernation.

How to fix that omission is discussed in this thread.

As for the "Windows did not shutdown...", I also had that in the beggining, but after some BIOS updgrade, never again. I think it's in version 6. Install the BIOS upgrade software and run it a couple of times to upgrade to the latest version.

The 4,5 Gb of the hibernate partition is correct, but it took me some time to figure it out. Neither the Samsung support could explain it to me... The hibernation partition is 75% the size of the RAM. The contents in RAM are compressed in that ratio (75%) and transfered to the Hibernate partition (4,5 Gb), so that is perfectly normal.

Oh, and make sure that you use Windows Suspend, not samsungs... You have an option for that in Settings.

I'm not convinced that you have the Intel Rapid Start Technology working. One feature is that the partition is directly mapped to the RAM so it can be updated as needed. Compression (as used in normal Windows hibernation) would prevent this.

Nothing when it comes the IRST. Win 8 reported the Win 7 IRST not to be compatible with Win 8, was recomended to check Intel pages for updates, but I was not able to find anything. I will give the Win 7 version a try.

    Hi all,

I'm currently having the "hibernation" issue. My laptop (serie 5) is going to sleep mode :-(

I've upgraded it to Windows 8 pro. During the upgrade process, the BIOS has also been upgraded.

I used W8 "Software Upgrade" from SAMSUNG to upgrade all the software and drivers.

At first in the "sSettings" program, the option intel rapid start was enabled. As there is no option to reinitialize it, I disable it restart and then re-enabled it. BUT from now the option is not saved after reboot.

I try to remove and re-install the software with no success. I also try to install directly intel driver package but then I got a message saying that my computer doesn't support the feature !

I also try to run the program located in GUI directory from the intel package and the program says that the intel rapid start seems to be not present on the computer !

The partition is present and Express Cache seems to work fine !

In the new bios V10, there is no option like "intel rapid start". Did SAMSUNG remove the support of this feature for Windows 8?

Did somebody make it run on Windows 8 ?

    Thanks.
    Stef

    So it's not working :-(

When trying to install ffsr I got the popup msg "there is a problem with this windows installer package. a program requiered for this install to complete could not be run. Conatct you support personnel or package vendor"

I tried also to install the irstdriver ans I got a message saying that the system does not reach the minimum requierement for the software installation !!!

the weird thing is that the irst service is running !

I'm lost !!! I sent an email to the SAMSUNG support... I hope they will give me a solution.

In the meantime, I ready to try another fix...

Note: Maybe, it's due to the new BIOS. There is no "intel rapid start" items in there...

I would reinstall the (Easy) Settings program. IRST seems to need cooperation between that and the IRST installer. And, after reinstalling Settings then go in and enable all the Fast options.

I tried also that but without success...

I will give a try tonight again.

    You recomandation is :

    uninstall sSettings
uninstall remaining drivers intel rapid start
    what else ?

I really would like to fix that. It's really annoying to loose ~6% of battery every night.... I could re-enable the windows hibernate feature but I want to use the complete fearures of the Laptop :)

    thanks for your support !

I can't get IRST to work with Win 8, but it starts as fast without it. Tonight I am going to try closing the lid to see what sort of battery drain I get. Maybe it will be comparable to IRST with Win 7. IRST is the only thing I can't get to work on Win 8, but then it wasn't perfect on Win 7 either.

Well. I unplugged the computer at 79% last night, and I shut the lid. Ten hours later the battery is at 77%. These are numbers without IRST. Maybe it's time for me to quit trying to get IRST to work. I think I can live with 2% drop.

If IRST isn't working then the improved Windows 8 hibernation is. It would be interest to look in Event Viewer's System log to see if there was any activity between shutting the computer and opening it 10 hours later. While IRST just stops sleeping after the pre-set timeout knowing that everything is in the hibernation partition, I don't know whether Windows 8 can handle the transition without waking up. Or maybe IRST is working with a 2 hour timeout? Do you have a registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Intel\irstrt\Parameters ? If so what are the TimerEnabled and TimerValue entries?

I do not have an IRST registry entry. I am not sure if I understand the report on the Event Viewer System Log. I closed the Lid at 11:30pm. Seems hibernation kicks in after 3 hours. I wonder if there is a way to teak that down? Here is an image of the Event Viewer: EventViewer.PNG

It looks like Windows is managing the sleep / hibernation. I know that Microsoft made improvements in Windows 8.

I actually had no problem getting IRST to work in windows 8... Just installed, it detected the hibernate partition in iSSD, and disabled Fast Start (Windows) and hibernation. All I had to do was install IRST and it worked OK. The only thing that's bugging me now is what John said, about my laptop having 8Gb RAM, but hibernate partition with 6Gb... The truth is that it is very very hard to fill the entire 8Gb of RAM, so the 6Gb of hibernate should be enough.

The best way for you to find out if IRST is working is:
    - Go to power options in windows, manage what the bottons and lid closing will do, and in the bottom if you have 4 options (fast start, suspend, hibernate and another one, can't remember), then IRST isn't installed.
    - If you have 2, it detected the hibernate partition, you should be able to install.
-If it's installed; then try to put the delay maybe one or 2 minutes, suspend the laptop, and wait and see if the led's light up when it is in suspension, that's when the IRST works.

I tried windows 8 WITHOUT IRST (fast start and hibernate options on), and I didn't see any advantages over IRST... So I returned to IRST (with a lot of dificulty) and prefer it over Windows 8 Fast Start, because with express chache, there's not a lot of diference to windows Fast Start...

But I think (maybe it's just a feeling..) that from the time that IRST kicks in (while laptop is in suspension) until it finishes transfering the data from RAM to iSSD, it takes a lot longer than when it was in windows 7... Sometimes, maybe up to 30 seconds, or more. Does anyone have this feeling also...?

Now when I try to install IRST, the installer says I am running something incompatible. I have assumed it means Win8. Can you link me the IRST file you downloaded?

I've used the version that John talks about here in this post, 10.0.0.1015. I was trying to copy/paste the link here, but it doesn't copy it correctly, but I'm sure that you have it on your support page, and this problem has nothing to do with the installer... Try the installer on page 17 of this post. There's a link there to a specific Win8 version, that's not for you pc model (neither mine) but I'll try it when I get home. Give it a go, also.

I also had the same problem as you when trying to get back to IRST on Win 8, and I can't remenber precisely what I've done, but try this:

    Disable express cache in settings
Erase hibernate partiotion in Windows Disk management
    Uninstall express cache.
Reboot and check if WIndows enables Fast Startup and Hibernation
    Disable both
    Reboot
Install Express Cache and check in windows disk management if it occupies the entire iSSD
Then, pray to God, Alá and Buda :) and try to install the IRST drivers... I'm confident it will work :)

EDIT: if it doesn't work, try to turn the Windows Hibernate option ON, reboot, see if it stays on, and then try to install IRST. I know at the time, after trying several things for hours, I ended up messing with Express Cache and windows Hibernate, and suddenly I was able to install it, without a problem.

EDIT 2: If windows doesn't turn hibernate on automatically (with iSSD hibernate partition deleted!!!), turn it on manually: in CMD with administrative privilegies: powercfg -h on

I've successfully installed those new IRST drivers, version 2.0 something, on page 18, and they also add a button to Settings, which didn't happen before...

And they still make my hibernate partition 6Gb size, though I have 8 Gb RAM....
And one funny thing: they made my hibernate partition on the beginning of the iSSD, instead of the end, like before (seen in Windos Disk Management). Any explanation for this...?

Just got my series 5 BIOS update, P07AAJ. Anyone also??

Samsung should really start making changelogs for these BIOS updates...

I think the new IRST version allows the coexistence of IRST and Windows Fast Startup... Still testing.

    Easy sollution to most problems:
    View attachment rapid_start_technology_user_guide.pdf

Just create hibernation partition by yourself. It can be done before or after installing IRST. Sometimes IRST say that you dont meet some requirements (and cannot be installed) because you dont have that partition. Note that Samsung Easy Something creates partition (and this size for 4GB RAM works OK) of 'size = 4396' instead of 4000 or 4096.

I've spent a couple of hours trying on my NP900X3C and I just can't create that hibernation partition in Windows 8. When I follow the instructions in the PDF I get this:

    DISKPART> set id=84 override

The specified type is not in the correct format.
For more information on the command type: HELP SET

Instead of a primary partition I tried "CREATE PARTITION MSR" and since then I'm able to run the install for Intel_Rapid_Start_Technology_2.1.0.1002 linked in this thread. It runs for a while, nothing happens, I reboot and then says "this program will create a hibernation partition". I click OK, wait a while and nothing happens. I rebooted a few times and all I can do is hit cancel when it prompts me so that it stops bugging me about creating the hibernation partition at each reboot.

I also had the same problem as you. That's because the iSSD is in GPT format, not MBR, like you HDD (maybe...). Those ID's 84, etc, don't apply to GPT. In GPT, there's another partition ID mode. For the hibernate is D3BFE2DE-3DAF-11DF-BA40-E3A556D89593, like seen here ftp://download.gigabyte.ru/manual/mb_manual_intel-ui_e.pdf

So, you just have to do everything like in MBR, but when you get to the part SET ID=84, just do SET ID=D3BFE2DE-3DAF-11DF-BA40-E3A556D89593, and TA DA!! IRST ON! :)

I still have to figure out is if UEFI as to be enabled in order to wake from IRST. IRST 2.0 uses GPT in iSSD, instead of MBR. But BIOS only reads disks in MBR format, and UEFI in GPT format. Windows 8 reads both, but when waking up from IRST, we only rely on Firmware, not Windows 8.
Currently reinstaling my laptop (series 5) from scratch, but when I get to IRST part, will test with UEFI on and off.
One more thing: this IRST 2.0 is cool, alows you to have Windows fast startup on, as well as windows hibernation!! Guess you only have to select which one you want. To use IRST, you only have to set the IRST time, put it into suspension, and see if the IRST kicks in. If you press Hibernate, guess it will use windows hibernate function. Have to test it more, but I think it is how IRST 2.0 works.

And one more thing (this is the 2nd edit :p), if you want to know if you iSSD is in GPT or MBR, just go to disk management, and right click on top of disk 1 (iSSD), not on any of the partitions, but really on top of the words. Then you'll have an option (probably disabled) that says "Convert to MBR". That is because it's in GPT. If it says "Convert to GPT", is in MBR mode. BE CAREFULL, ins order to convert from on to another, you have to WIPE the disk, completely!!! Not a problem if it's the iSSD, HUGE problem if it's the HDD... But it also only lets you change, you if delete all volumes first, so, you won't do it unless you really want to.

Ok I did this and Diskpart told me "success" when I set the ID on the partition. But installing IRST still gives me the same thing, I run the install, there's no message saying it's been installed successfully or anything, I reboot a couple of times and the installer again comes up, I see a couple of console windows flash by, and now when I reboot I don't see the installer anymore.

When I suspend I still don't see the power off/on/off happening, there are no new programs installed and there's no new option in the Settings app, so how would I even know it's installed/working? Is the timer set to 0 by default or should I suspend it and check the battery usage?

By the way, I had UEFI enabled before I installed Windows 8 and now I can't even disable it to test, because my SSD won't boot if I have it disabled.

If your pc wont boot with UEFI off its becayse SDD is already in gpt. No problem with that, leave UEFI always on.

As for the software install, that also happened to me. I think the software is not that well written... Install is ok, uninstall isnt. I think it always leaves traces behind, making it "think" with another reinstall that the software is already installed and so, canceling the install. You either install it ok the first time, or youll have some problems... The best way would be to reinstall from scratch, erase the volumes in iSSD (not the main hard drive) and reinstall everything. But as that is a lot of work. IrST I believe its working. Try set it to 0, suspende your laptop and if it as shutdnowns, imideatly turns the leds on again for a few seconds, then irst is working. What the button in settings does (I thin) is erasing the hibernate partition, disabling IRST, or creating the partition.

When you install IRST, a second program is installed, the FFSR (fast flash sleep resume). Its the one that installs the button in settings, and creates the partition. What I would do is uninstall IRST, uninstal FFSR (if it appears in programs list), maybe also uninstall settings, erase respective foldes in programs (x86) folder, run a program like ccleaner, to remove every registry entry related to those software and try to install again. But check first if IRST is working by following Johns instructions. If it is, you dont need the button in settings, and if you can live with that, then perfect. :) I would also create a full system backup with samsung recovey software, so you can easily go back to current state if anything goes wrong.

Oh, and you try to install, I think what happens is the ffsr install window appears, runs at about 75%, and then all the way back again, right? Same as what happened to me, I believe its a software bug. You either get it right the first time, or it becomes a headache.

Where do you set the timer to 0? If you're referring to the registry entries on the first page, I don't have those.

I'm not sure that the Intel software installs at all for me. Under "Programs and Features" the closest thing I have is Intel Rapid Storage Technology and I believe that came from Samsung's SW Update utility.

In Program Files x86, under Intel I have an empty irstrt folder. Under Samsung, I have Fast Flash Sleep Resume. I ran FFSRConfigurer.exe just to see what happens. Where are the settings for that app like the 0 timeout you mentioned?

Should I nuke Fast Flash Sleep Resume and try this stuff again? When I run this and it says it wants to configure a hibernate parition, is it actually looking for empty space and wants to create a partition from scratch, or is it going to find the partition I created previously?
