YepHope that helps! Adaptive brightness was bothering me too haha

wow the 17 inch one is 1300$ directly from samsung.
im definitely thinking about getting one.
I cant even realistically find something to compare it to. its a 17 inch touch screen with a 128 bit gpu it also uses a 90 watt power brick ( I live in a motorhome so I appreciate a low overall power consumption)
it also has an ati equivalent of optimus, I believe its the most advanced in the world.
Theres never the perfect kind of data for me to analyze but overall it has almost the exact gpu power as my 3 year old asus g73 ( it is a 256 bit card still) but it has a much more powerful cpu and uses a power brick one half the size.
and it has a full hd screen. I cant even find something to compare it to if someone has a touchscreen gaming laptop to compare this onen to please compare it.
the only other ones I found are acer books with nvidia 710 for around the same price.
its crazy actually. -
The 17 inch one isn't available in touch, I thought.
-
yeah, like flickerdart said, sorry to burst your bubble but 17incher doesnt feature touchscreen, at least not yet
-
I found a setting somewhere for the quiet fan mode but now I don't know where it is. I don't know whether it's on or off because I think I accidentally hit the function key for it. Anyone know where the option is?
-
Does this suffer from thermal throttling when gaming like the xps?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2 -
Silent Mode: Fn-F11 on previous models, probably the same on this. You can also set it in Settings (Fn-F1).
Do note that the silence comes at a price: The CPU is slowed down to stay cool and the power profile is set to Power Saver.
Google site:notebookreview.com/samsung silent mode to find other posts on the subject.
Edit: Also, my Sammy came with a quick guide that covered the most basic stuff, including Windows and Fn-keys. See if there is one in the box for yours. -
The 17 inch one throttles the processor but the 15 with the 8870 doesn't. It just doesn't go in turbo mode when it gets a little warm, but it runs a consistent 2.4 Ghz
-
No. I have it and I hate it. It freezed MULTIPLE times on me today. Three times when I was making a PowerPoint presentation for my English final, and it rolled back my work when I reopened it.

We can see Core i5, i think this video is about the ATIV Book 6

Is it that difficult to understand? But you already stated that "you think" so it probably is. -
Here we go again. Every time you write something you offend someone... You really should take an anger management course...
It's not difficult at all to understand that NP8XXXXX is an ATIV Book 8, he just said that the specs aren't those of an ATIV 8: in fact they list a HD8850 and even a DVD drive...
Besides, Ativ 8 shouldn't have an i5 cpu, unless Samsung has decided to sell more than the usual 2 version (S01 and S02) we've always seen so far with the Chronos..
Sent from HTC HD2 with Tapatalk -
Well the issue I have is that there is no indication of whether silent mode is on or off. If the computer is idle it's silent anyway. That's why I wanted to find the menu option where you can see whether it's on or off. But I figured out that it throttles down the CPU so I just looked at Task Manager.
-
In the UK, we have a NP770Z5E-S02UK model which has an i5 and 8570 graphics, and a NP780Z5E-T01UK with i5 and 8850 graphics, though neither with a DVD drive. They're both still marketed as Series 7 Chronos, which will become Ativ Book 8. So it is possible that models of the Ativ Book 8 won't have a 8870m or a i7 processor, though it is clear that Samsung intends for the Ativ Book 8 moniker to replace the Series 7 Chronos based on their press release.
If you click on the battery button on the task bar, if you're still on default profiles, it will usually show you Samsung Optimised profile as being selected, or the Power Saver profile if silent mode is on. I think that's the easiest way to check, though a LED light would have been useful. -
I think you meant the 8750m not the 8570m
the latter is in the ultrabook series 7 ultra and former is in the cheaper version of series 7 chronos though it is very rare to come by... -
That's exactly right!
You can also look in Settings (Fn-F1) to see the state of Silent Mode.
As alfling said, you REALLY have to calm down. And it's not just Jako. Ordinally I would edit these posts and issue private warnings (or assign infraction points). But it is time consuming, and this thread has a bad reputation for it.
Calm down guys. It's JUST computers, and you don't need this kind of language to discuss them.
If you're upset about something, then don't post your response until you cooled down. Take deep breaths and re-read your post before hitting Submit. -
There's no "Start Menu", it's been replaced with the "Start Page". Mouse over the bottom left corner of the screen (or hit the "windows" key) and start typing what you're looking for. Search will find it.
-
I think that it has been mentioned several times in this thread that while the ATIV Book 6 seems to be nearly identical to the Series 7 Chronos from a major component standpoint, except that it has less powerful speakers and a smaller battery.
-
Hi,
Did you have any information about these different spec? I am very interesting about it in france, so if there is a probleme on this page and consequently if we have 8870 ect ect, i will buy it immediatly!
Thx -
This should be in the first post too:
ATIV Book 6 = Series 5 refresh. The refresh brought it closer to the Series 7, but it still falls short in terms of battery, screen (I think?), graphics, and speaker quality.
ATIV Book 8 - Series 7 equivalent. I do not see any differences in the two. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Historically, the Series 5 have had lower resolution displays. Perhaps this will still be the case with the Ativ Book 5 while the Book 6 is an intermediate product. It will all become clearer in time.
John -
If by graphics you mean the 8770m is short of the Series 7's 8870m, keep in mind many Series 7 laptops (especially in the U.S.) are still stuck with the 8770m.
For the screen Samsung might use a cheaper screen for the ATIV Book 6. -
does a ivy bridge cpu have the capability to switch to a hd 4000 when the gpu is an ati 8870?
if not what is the real battery life compared to the 650m model? -

Yes, these notebooks support switchable graphics and use the Intel GPU by default. Claimed battery run time is up to about 10 hours (although 5 to 7 hours is more realistic).

Guess noone has posted this.. so

Great, now only another month or two for this driver to get final and then another 5-6 months for Samsung to release its custom driver based on it! By the of the year we should be set!! yea!
#Sarcasm, the least we can do to describe this idiotic situation with AMD not allowing their vanilla drivers to get install in notebooks with their graphic cards and switchable graphics. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
That's ebay for you. Someone trying to sell a damage unit for more than the cost of a new one. Buyer beware!
John -
So I picked up my new Samsung Chronos series 7 (NP770Z5E) yesterday and have been working on it for nearly 24 hours.
I have had dozens of laptops,Mac and PC based, over the years and I've always found that there's always been a compromise somewhere. Macbooks the gpu, gaming laptops poor battery life. Most have poor speakers. Some sub par screens. Then theres also crappy keyboards or a clunky design overall. Due to all these variables I've never had a laptop that is good in every area. Until now.
I can honestly say that if I was to score every aspect of the Chronos out of ten I would struggle to rate any of them under a 9.
I found the display to be particularly impressive along with the overall build quality.
Im actually quite shocked in how good it is and it looks and feels stunning. I think Samsung has really stepped up its game on this product and I'd challenge anyone to find a better machine for the price.
Even the speakers sound great. -
which version did you get? 8870?

Yes.NP770Z5E

Which country - last two letters in full model number?
John -
i was just reading this engadget article about the upcoming ACER laptops, and i may lean to this option instead of the chronos, ATIV book, etc:
Acer brings options galore to new Aspire V5 and V7 laptops (hands-on)
My reasoning are based on the following concerns:
- identity crisis, especially in the US.... what is the model? chronos, ATIV book, why the different configurations by region?
- no 8870 US release (at least not that i see)
- AMD and samsung driver issues..... you just KNOW this is going to be a headache with unsuported drivers from AMD. we just cant rely on samsung to provide current drivers.
- THE WAIT FOR ANYTHING CONCRETE, with the series 7 model in the US. Been waiting almost 3 months now, and the info weve gotten is more vague than ever
- No SSD option (unless you do it yourself)
- The potential cost of the 15 inch 8870 version to be around $1700 in the US (rumored.... if it will even be an option)
The ACER seems to allow you to be able to customize virtually every aspect, including the touch screen, the graphics card (nvidia and amd), SSD, and everything in between.
Going to wait on the benchmarks and further details on this machine. i have just been in this thread since early march, and its only got more confusing and convuluted since then. The Series 7 Chronos they demoed at CES is what i want, but it looks as I am a US customer, i may not have that option. -
np770z5e-s01 . Uk
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Will the end user be able to customize (ie built-to-order) or will it be like Samsung's system where individual countries chose configurations to order from the factory?
Thanks. S01 in one country is not necessarily the same specs as in another.
John -
FYI - for those in Canada considering the NP7805ZE-S02, or those who have purchased one in the past 30 days, it is on sale at Future Shop ($200 off the original price of $1699).
-
Looks like a decent alternative, and I like Acer's build quality. What about battery life though? That was the one thing that turned me to the Chronos in the first place. And what's the difference between the Radeon 8750 and the 8770, or the 8870?
-
Which store?
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Read a few more posts to find out which country (UK), although we don't know which store.
John -
Yeah I got that part. I am contemplating having a forwarding service send me one in the US but cannot find it online in the UK where it is available. Want the 8870.
-
There's one thing that scares me about the Acer... the screen. So far HP and Sony use LG IPS 15.6" screens and they both have the "orangegate" issue. They display red as orange and it's not fixable with calibration. They both refuse to acknowledge the issue or fix the problem. I wonder if Acer is going to use the same screen or buy them from some other manufacturer...
-
So far this laptop is great, after fixing all the stupid issues and getting rid of bloatware. I wish the screen didn't have the sparkle but I get the feeling all units have that problem, just some people don't notice it. It's probably the method of gluing the glass layer to the plastic LCD panel. There's no alternative for a laptop with a good screen, aside from the Macbook Retinas.
-
I think John Lewis (department store) has a uk exclusive on the 8870. DSG Retail (PC World et al) have the 8850.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2 -
Like I said in the owner's thread I just downloaded and installed 13.5 beta 3 flawlessly, as if it came from samsung themselves, full support for this laptop.
-
John Lewis. They delivered it within 3 days of order
-
8870>>>>8770>>8750
-
I just installed the 13.5 beta 3 drivers as well on my 15.6 inch chronos with the 8770 with no issue. I ran the windows 8 experience index before and after. I do have two small modifications on my chronos. I installed a samsung 840 pro 256gb and i instaled 8gb vengance memory for a total of 12 gb
REVISED******
***** After installing drivers system became unstable, can not change brightness on laptop display, google chrome no longer functions after rolling back video driver (believe this is unrelated) I would advise against installing the beta drivers.. -
Can you link to the download of the beta 3?
-
Not quite correct.
John lewis are selling the non-touch versions (np770z5e)
DSG (Currys PCWorld) sell the touch models (np780z5e)
Depending on the variant (eg T01uk, S01uk etc) determines which GPU you have.
I have the np780z5e s01uk, which is core i7, 8870 GPU, touchscreen. Bought from Currys (online order for store collection), which I got early March.
I think DSG are still out of stock of all theirs though!
