Just purchased the NP770Z5E-S01 for £1099. £200 more than my budget :err: It was between that or a Clevo but the battery life and the quality of the build swung it for me. Hope I dont regret it

That wouldn't happen to have been from John Lewis would it? It is stretching my budget as well, but it looks like a lovely machine. I just wish they carried the NP780 with the touchscreen as I'd much prefer it. But that seems to be like gold dust over here sadly.

Yes. I actually prefer to have the non-touchscreen as I do a lot of media/3D work and I prefer to have the less reflective screen. Also, something to consider, devices with capacitive screens use slightly more power. Not much more but enough to sway me. Touch screen on laptops seems kind of weird to me because of having to stretch over the keyboard. I couldnt see myself using it a lot.
I'm also chucking in a 250gb samung 840 series ssd. The stock 1tb hdd is pants

Adding on to this I believe the UK touch screen version is an I5 not I7 and the gpu is an 8850 instead of and 8870

Curry's/PCWorld actually list the i7 version, but it has been out of stock for ages and they ramped the price up to £1300! I did call the Samsung store in London, but they have no stock in either. However, they do charge slightly less at £1200 - when they have it of course :)

I'd like the touch screen just because I think I'd regret it at a later date if I didn't get it in the first place :D

Yes, it's now 1300 although this is for the touchscreen version. I can't justify an extra 200 pounds for a touchscreen when its 1100 from John Lewis without. Like the poster mentions, non touchscreen is matte and uses a bit less power so that would sway it for me (also, aren't touch screens a bit heavier?).

For those of us in the UK wanting to replace the HD with a SSD, Samsung are currently offering cash back on certain drives from certain suppliers like ebuyer.com. For example, at ebuyer.com you can get 40 quid off the 350 asking price for a 512gb SSD Pro. There are a few hoops you will have to jump through to get the cash back... wait 15 days before applying then another 45 days wait until you get the cash back.

I may just wait on another month, as the Ativ Book 8 has a black keyboard. However, as the days go by its getting harder for me not so buy as I am using an 11.6" Sony Vaio laptop for my web development work. The fan noise is horrendous!

I actually prefer a glossy screen - they always look cleaner and crisper to me. Bit disappointed as Ihadn't realised the 770 was matte

Re: touchscreen, I find it incredibly handy when the computer is on my lap. In this position, the touchpad is too close to my body to use comfortably, but the screen is close enough that I can tap at it without having to reach.

I really really want to buy the 770z5e, but the lack of a proper driver support for the 8870m is a main disadvantage. Without proper drivers it is not clear if i could play games in 1,5 years without graphic bugs. I mean the performance is/will be great without doubt but graphic bugs can really destroy a game experience. In my opinion an notebook with an nvidia gpu is a better choice because of the direct driver support from nvidia.

X-Kom.pl listed ATIV 8 with prices:

NP870Z5E-X01PL with i5 8850 for 5300 PLN (this is the one on youtube video)
    NP880Z5E-X01PL with i7 8870 for 6300 PLN

Prices are similar to the UK and no 16GB version.

Did Samsung's laptop division get bought over by North Korea by any chance? That's the only reason i can find for the high end stuff not coming to the US :p. But seriously if both models hit the US (Chronos 8870 or Ativ 8) which one would you get?

That's why manufacturers use them so much...it's an inexpensive way to make the screen look much higher quality than it really is. The downside is that you get ridiculous amounts of glare on them if you have any kind of bright light around.

Of course on the Chronos the glossy screen is for a different purpose. If you have a touchscreen, you might be able to make one that is matte but you'll never get the fingerprints off of it.

The driver support issue is largely a Samsung issue rather than an AMD issue. If Samsung had a laptop with a GT750M chipset there's no reason to expect that Samsung wouldn't customize that hardware to the point that it needs custom drivers as well.

Thought I'd point out that the 17" model with the HD8870 is on sale at Best Buy in the US for $1,149.99, which I consider a pretty good deal. Too big/heavy for me, but if someone absolutely needs the 8870 today this looks like a solid bet.

How can notebook look sexy? Do you perform s.e.x with notebooks?

I just realize that every notebook with ATIV name is black. Does it mean that 770/780 silver Chronos is finish and there will only be 870/880 in black. If that's the case I prefer silver Chronos. I just don't see the point in painting silver aluminium in black, every scratch will be silver and after few months all edges will be silver. Black premium notebook should be made of carbon fibre and silver is aluminium and dark grey is made of magnesium.

The ATIV Book 6 has much weaker speakers (2x2W instead of 2x4W) and a smaller battery (80WHr instead of 91WHr) compared to the Chronos. I was wondering if the ATIV Book 8 would receive the same treatment.

theoretically, the ativ 8 is supposed to be the same as the series 7s of right now, just in ash black instead.

iirc, the ativ 6 is basically the series 5 notebooks, which have been refreshed but look like a 'nerfed' series 7.

After purchasing a new Series 7 Chronos from John Lewis I went into a PC World store to see if they had any in. There happen to be a Samsung rep and stand set up so I asked him if I could have a look at one. He told me that the Dixons group companies have had two shipments since release and each of them sold out in days. He also told me there weren't even any display models left. Didn't even know when stock would be available. Seems a bit shambolic to me or very clever marketing. Surely you'd supply the rep of your company with a model of what would be one of your flagship laptops?

Ooh ok that makes sense. The current Series 5 seems to have 1.5W speakers, which are even worse, so I'm not sure if the one I'm looking at is specced comparatively. I can't tell what to reference.

The ATIV Book 6 is not comparable to the Series 7 Chronos. It's comparable to the ATIV Book 8. Go look at Samsung's Facebook page, they're posted an image showing and telling how they are rebranding a lot of their computers to the new naming.

*Sigh*......Don't you guys understand that the ATIV Book 6 is the equivalent of the Series 5??? It said it on the Engadget article, you can find it anywhere. The ATIV Book 8 is the same thing as the Series 7 Chronos, just wait for that.

I think all that means is how the product stratification is. The ATIV Book 6 has the same specs as the current Chronos Series 7 right down to the 8770 and touchscreen... It even has the mechanical HDD, VGA but no Displayport, and 8gb RAM. In what way is it similar to the Series 5?

Its not just a rebrand of the Series 5. Is its replacement. The ATIV Book 6 is the new Series 5.
Manufacturers are moving away from DisplayPort, it never actually took off.

No, this one. Samsung extends ATIV branding to all Windows PCs, adds Book 5, Book 6 and SideSync software to the roster

Look towards the bottom where they have that chart. Clearly shows that the Series 7 Chronos corresponds to the ATIV Book 8

Like I said, ATIV Book 8 is the Chronos 7; the way I see their advertising, it's just Ash Black instead of the regular metal color (whatever it's called). Eventually, they will phase out the entire 'Series X' branding, as they're pushing a brand family. It's part of an overall strategy to streamline all of their computer offerings.

Aside from the series 7 chronos that have the 8770's. Like mine. Still, since the Ativ 6 and my chronos 7 (np780z5e-s01ub) have essentially the same specifications from what I can tell, I'd almost like to call Samsung and see if they'd exchange the two. I've passed the return date and I think the darker color of the Ativ might help with the awkward lighting of the backlit keyboard. Plus it's weird to have a laptop from a production line that lasted only 2-3 months tops. Hopefully driver support will continue for such a short lived model.

I just bought the NP780Z5E-S01UB from Best Buy and I'm already infuriated. I can't figure out how to access the "Samsung Settings App" to turn off automatic brightness.

Remember when Windows had a Start Menu, and in it you could search for your applications? Now that's gone with Windows 8. I'll have to install the shell mod that restores the start menu, in order to find a simple "app" that should be easy to get to.

Edit: I just found the settings program in \Program Filees (x86)\

The problem is it doesn't have a setting for brightness like Samsung claims... Really, so there's no way to turn off the annoying auto brightness? http://answers.us.samsung.com/answers/7463/product/NP780Z5E/samsung/questions.htm

When you say "go to settings" what are you talking about? The Samsung settings app doesn't have "PC Settings"

EDIT: Oh, I see, you're talking about the "Charm" on the right. You hit PC Settings at the bottom and then scroll down to the General tab. THANKS! I really don't get why Windows 8 has this thing in addition to the Control Panel... or why Samsung tells you to use an unrelated program to fix the brightness.
