The UX51 doesn't look like a gawdy monstrosity, though I've seen some of the heavy duty gaming laptops have terrifying power adapters. My current adapter's not a lightweight by any means, but its not as bad as it could be.
About the heat, in all honesty, that's the biggest reason I'm restraining my enthusiasm for this laptop -- I really want to see how well the cooling works on this guy before I get too thrilled. I definitely want to wait and see how hot this gets, etc, before I purchase.
-
It has 90w power supply. At least according to some of the retailers.
I have for example very very tiny Lepa AD9009 90w third-party power supply with multiple plugs. Look it up on Amazon.de, I have been very pleased with it and can recommend it if it happens that Samsung's own adapter is too big. -

My hp envy has a larger form factor than the Chronos and it still gets incredibly hot with the 5830m, which is only 24w. If I run any demanding game for a few hours without using a laptop cooler, it will certainly shutdown. With a good cooler like the Zalman NC3000, however, it stays cool to the touch and doesn't shut down. The chassis is metal alloy, which helps to dissipate heat, hopefully the Chronos chassis serves a similar function.
And lets hope Samsung doesn't gimp the card! -

A 45w processor and a 45w GPU don't leave much headroom from a 90w power supply for the panel, SSD, RAM, fans, etc. We'll see, I guess!

The page of the Samsung Series 7 Chronos on Amazon says the battery is 8 cell and 91Wh:

Yes, the German specs indicate the same -
I see many people worried about GPU cooling, for me the big problem instead is CPU cooling.
The last generation of AMD GPU had no problem in heat dissipation, at least in the notebooks which I read the reviews.
Moreover in Envy 17 (AMD 7850m) you could easy overclock GPU adding 200MHz without a relevant increasing of temps (dual fan cooling).
I seen others notebooks with AMD GPU like Dell Inspiron and no one has throttling problem.
Instead I'm a little worried for CPU, maybe a 3632QM could be a better choice, but this is just a speculation until the reviews come out.
I wonder why Amozon.it price is so higher than Amazon.de and Amazon.fr (+100€
, surely for German and French price there is a lighter VAT (19% German), (19.6% French), (21% Italian).
So this doesn't explain 100€ of difference, because the price without VAT still remains different 1156€ vs 1091€, but maybe there is some kind of tax about digital media for Italy that I don't considering... -
I actually trust samsung with the heat and I'm not too worried.
Edit: did the previous gen chronos have any heating/throttling issues?
Germany is usually cheap when it comes to buying electronics, France and Italy not. So that amazon.de is cheaper is normal but amazon.fr puzzles me too. -
Wattage doesnt really matter imo in the end its the headpipe thermal paste dual fan setup quality combo that will tell if heat just stays inside or goes away...

No SATA 3?
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Perhaps they mean the HDD is SATA 2 (a 2.5" HDD won't overload SATA 1) but I'm sure the interface will be SATA 3 since SSDs are an option. The current Series 7 supports SATA 3 in the primary bay.

I want now that Samsung ship one to notebookcheck, nooow!
I hardly wait from 2 month a review by now.

what's PowerExpress?
Is it samsung's weird proprietary alternative to MXM? -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Keep in mind up until now, there has never been any laptop with a graphics card this powerful in a chassis this thin before.
The Envy 17 you refer to is 1.3" thick (33mm) and also much wider than a 15.6" laptop. The Inspiron 15R has the 7730m, which is a bit weaker than the 650m and quite a lot weaker than the 8870m, and it is 1.34" thick (34mm).
The Chronos is only 0.82" thick (20.8mm) and with a much faster graphics card than the other laptops you mentioned. -
Exactly my concern!

This description suggests it is AMD's switchable graphics equivalent of Nvidia's Optimus.
I'm also curious to see how they have achieved effective cooling given that my NP900X4C with its 17W CPU can get quite noisy under full load. Disposing of 90W of heat needs the same air-blowing capacity as in the 2012 Series 9. I'm sure there is potential to improve fan design and efficiency but spinning small fans very quickly usually results in excessive noise.

Wasn't it supposed to be Enduro?
Sent from HTC HD2 with Tapatalk -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
You may be correct. It's plausible that the specs in the User Guide were written before Enduro was announced so the previous terminology was used. However, the PDF file "samsung-series-7-and-ultra-2013-pdf-180k.pdf" linked to near the start of this thread also refers to PowerExpress. The info at fishingtree doesn't use either term.
Anyway, PowerExpress is nothing to do with MXM, which is a typeof packaging.

I need a little confirmation that i have gotten things right.
780Z5E is the 15.6" with 1080p PLS screen with touchscreen glossy
770Z5E is the 15.6" with 1080p PLS screen without touchscreen and matte
and that is the only difference between the two?
One things i saw on the fishingtree site was that in the 780Z5E they say it gots anti reflective, but it could be they copied it from 770Z5E page and forgot to change it?
Edit: seems like they copied it wrong, checked the amazon page, and there it dont say anti-reflective on the 780Z5E -
Yes, exactly. There may be a difference in ram configuration.
-
780 on amazon, where?
-
I think he meant "the description meant for Amazon from the fishingtree site".
Anyway, otto.de just changed the availability from "deliverable in a week" to "end of February". And Amazon.de have no information regarding delivery dates. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Versions of either model could have differences in RAM, CPU and storage device depending on what is ordered from the factory by the various country marketing people. Perhaps it is relevant to note that touch may add to thickness and weight. The available data sheet shows this for the 13.3" Series 7 but not for the 15.6".
John -
yes exactly, sorry for not making that clear direct, thank you for your comment
-
The specs sheet day's that it is .1kg heavier but the same thickness, which makes sense as the bezel isn't raised on the touch version.
-
For more people curious about the AMD card, this is somewhat interesting. I'm not 100% sure this is an apples to apples comparison, even ignoring the completely unbiased source the AMD info comes from.
Compare to Comparison of Nvidia graphics processing units - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Which states that the 650M has up to 691 GFLOPS, the 660M has 641, the 670M has 803, and the 675M has 952, with the claimed AMD 880 series output of 992 GFLOPS. Again, not entirely sure if these numbers are directly compatible, and even if they are, the 8800's source is obviously more biased.
Could someone confirm if these numbers are in fact, apples to apples?
Edit: Apparently GFLOPS is almost completely irrelevant to usefulness in games. Good to know. So yeah, everything here was pretty much pointless xD -
Regarding the other models...
570Z5E - Series 5 with the same GPU but maybe HD (1366x768) screen?
730U3E - Series 7 Ultra with HD8570M GPU and... ULV Processor? The description from fishingtree's pic doesn't say ULV but I'm guessing it will be... -
According to the first pre-orders LV not ULV
John,
since the Chronos and the Ultra don't have too much in common, wouldn't it be wise to discuss about the Series 7 Ultra in its own thread?
My post in the news & reviews forum where I linked that thread got removed and I'm wondering why. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
They are both new Series 7s announced at the same time so there will always be overlapping discussion. However, it's useful to remind people that the Ultra version has its own thread.
Regarding your other post, I have undeleted it but also edited to alleviate the confusion that caused its deletion.

Check out the new Series 3's on fishingtree, codenamed Lampard. I know its not entirely related, but its possible that the finishing of the Series 3 as well, means that Samsung is finally ready to...y'know, announce dates. The only thing I don't see on fishingtree now are the new Series 9's, if those are going to be there.

Evidence of this model coming to Canada:
Canada Computers | Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets | Samsung Nike II High (NP780Z5E-S02CA) Notebook | Intel Core I7_3635QM 8GB RAM, 1TB_5.4KR/16G EC, DVD-RW | 15.6" FHD PLS Touch AMD HD8870M 2GB; Windows 8
The claim that it has a DVD-RW drive is probably wrong.
For me it could almost be the ideal machine except for the slow hard drive and absence of any second drive option. -
Nice find man!
First link I've seen on the 780z5e other than the fishingtree site.
I don't know how accurate it is though. The dimensions are wrong, and there is clearly no DVD drive. Odd. They seem to have taken the dimensions and specs from the old chronos 15 and just changed a few things around. -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Haha they are calling it the "Nike" just like the fishingtree page for some reason.

Hurry up Samsung!!!
I just filed my tax return and I'm ready to hit the buy button! Like right now! Been waiting for something like this for awhile now.. And it seems like a worthy upgrade from my first gen envy 14 radiance... OH YA!! -
I second that, lol. I'm ready to get back to Windows from this OSX stuff I don't like! ha
-
Yeah, I'm patiently waiting this arrival but think I might go ahead and buy an older 700Z5A while they're still around in case the new 770Z5E is too pricey. This gives me 30 days to either keep the 700Z5A or ditch it for a new 770Z5E.
From what I can tell, looks like the 770Z5E will be $1200+ and would be out of my price range. Does this price sound right? Do Samsung laptops hold their price for a while or do they drop quickly? How about availibility?
(too many questions, sorry) -
I'm in the same boat as you are. I'm on a 13" 2010 Macbook Pro and I'm don't with OS X as well. Windows 7 runs faster and smoother than the latest OS X on that machine. I'm done with it.

Nice find ZOOT, price seems a little hefty but I guess it was expected, and thats without shipping as well. Does anyone know if this that site is reliable in terms of delivering the product. Has anyone bought anything from tere?
Nice find ZOOT, price seems a little hefty but I guess it was expected, and thats without shipping as well. Does anyone know if this that site is reliable in terms of delivering the product. Has anyone bought anything from there? -
It's a largeish store in Canada.
There are like 20 of them. I have bought stuff locally from them with no problems, but never anything expensive. -
so safe to say they are reliable and truth worthy. One of the options to keep in mind when time comes for ordering the laptop
-
Yea I would say so.
Where do you live? Like what country?
It wouldn't make much sense to buy from them unless you lived in Canada, and even then something like the Microsoft store or Futureshop/bestbuy would be better(bigger stores, offer extended warranties and 30 day return policy) -
I live in Ontario, Canada. Its good to have another option such as the site in case other outlets like best buy or future shop have higher prices or receive the product later. Amazon.ca is another viable option which has decent prices. But I take it the price will be the same all over, it comes down to who is offering the best shipping price.
-
Ouch, $1,699 Canadian is about the same in US dollars for that config with 8GB ram and 1TB hard drive. Getting pricey.
-
I could pay 1700 USD as long as this laptop doesn't throttle down CPU or GPU and as long as the 8870m performs at least as the 660m then Samsung can have my money
-
Keep in mind that 1700USD is for touch model.
-
Amen to that.
