Some German store reports a price around 1250€.
-
They never mention the term IPS although they talk about 178 degree viewing angles horizontally & vertically.
For a fully-loaded machine I'd expect $1500 although I wish it's a more palatable $1250. -
Well the only samsung made screen that has such angles is the matte IPS one they produce for... macbooks, or the LG one called orangegate or a new 1080p 15inch PLS unheard of but I bet they keep that for the next 15 inch series 9 ultrabook.

Observing some online stores seems that there are 2 versions:

It seems that S01DE (DE is for German version) have Windows 8, and something called "multi"
many of these stores report that this a 17.3" model and its price is around 1270€.
The other version S02DE have Window 8P (Maybe it means Pro version) and something called "ohne" that in English means "without" this is the 15.6" version and its price is around 1400€.
The others specs look the same:

If they say 178-degree viewing angles, then that has to mean IPS; that kind of thing is simply impossible with a TN screen. I know some laptops, like the HP dv6, never advertised having an IPS screen, but it certainly did. I like that IPS screens are starting to become the norm
An IPS/touchscreen combination and I'm sold

so now how to decide between the Samsung Series 7 Chronos and the Asus u500vz?
-
Same here
-
Is there a touch-screen version of the asus?
And the gpu is def. better for the chronos -
Yes, the Asus has touch. The naming is either U500vz or UX51vz probably depending on the region. This forum has two (massive) posts for these models if you search.
For specs....
ZENBOOK Touch U500VZ
or
ASUS - Notebooks- ASUS ASUS ZENBOOK Touch U500VZ -
No, I dont think Samsung will be using LG's displays in their own products. Right now LG is the only competitor to Samsung when it comes to displays.
The display in this machine will either be Samsungs own made with PLS-technology or maybe just an expensive TN-type.
If its going to be a TN-panel, then this will fail, if it's PLS-panel then we may have a worthy retina competitor. -
Having an asus their high end are wondeful devices for the price. The touchpad drivers under windows 8 are very close to mbps and are the best on windows imo with smooth inertial scrolling especially.
However asus quality check on first series and high end is seriously lacking. Its pretty much backlight bleeding lottery with them. I believe samsung is less affected by light bleeding issues because their quality check on screens is tighter (ie series 9 13 inch pls quality). However samsung might just give here a simple metal look and feeling plastic frame rather than real aluminium like asus does. -
I think no decision could be made till the Samsung Chronos is actually available out there in the wild. Only when we have the inputs from the early buyers, a decision could be made.
Given all the specs that we already know about the Chronos:
Firstly, the Chronos shouldn't have any fatal flaws like OrangeGate / Crazy bleeding / Graphics Card issue (Enduro) etc.
Secondly, it should fare better than the Asus UX51 in areas like fan noise, quality control issues, user upgradibility etc.
and Lastly, the Chronos needs to be at least as aesthetically pleasing as the UX51 -
Perhaps 'multi' and 'ohne' refer to multi-touch screen.
-
The Win8 touch gestures on some of the Zenbooks I've tried have a great feature - it implements the charms gesture better. When swiping from the right on the track pad, it shows the Win8 charms menu *and* moves the pointer to the middle of the menu. On all other laptops that I've tried the mouse stays on the other side of the screen, which sort of defeats the purpose of having a trackpad gesture IMHO. I don't know if Samsung laptops will do this, but with a touchscreen on this model it may not matter anyway. But it's the way the charms trackpad gesture should work.
I do think the Chronos is aesthetically pleasing for the most part. I think the full-size VGA port is an eye-sore though. I'd rather see a displayport.
I'm also glad they moved the SD card to the side instead of the front like last year's - much better. I'm hoping the SD card here supports SDXC, and also that it locks the card fully inside the unit - the card slot on the ux51 doesn't lock in and hangs halfway out, which is a rubbish way to do things on a laptop.
Also the Chronos battery is marketed at 11.5 hours, while the u500 is rated at 7. I heard that a touchscreen can bring battery life down, so I will be interested to see what the Chronos battery is rated with the touchscreen, because the 11.5 probably is for the non-touch version. -
It's more related to software than hardware, I updated Synaptics driver and have all W8 gestures on my 3 years old Dell.
-
thx for the info
-
I really hope they up the cooling system... cause a 8870 is going to make that thing burn up. this looks like an amazing laptop though if they can pull it off.
-
I think the 11.5 hours is probably with the touchscreen, as it seems to come stock with a touchscreen.
So, we can 11.5 hours is with lowest brightness, wifi off, doing nothing
Then would general browsing be like 9 hours?
And heavy use be like 6?
Also do Microsoft stores normally have the latest laptops from samsung, asus, etc. on display/for sale? -
My guess would be that touch was an afterthought, as the marketing draft posted earlier doesn't even mention it.
http://pci34.fishingtree.com/nike2/strategy/700Z7E/
At least they realized how important touch would be as a selling point after their initial marketing was done. Some initial reports have been that buyers are mostly interested in touch machines.
Personally, I don't think I'd even buy one without a touchscreen today, as touch will only become more important and useful. In fact, my kids already think anything without a touchscreen is broke! -
Just hope the system is capable to handle both CPU and GPU at once. The Z5A couldn't and throttled CPU to 1.2GHz. This was a problem with some Ivy Bridge machines like the Dell XPS 14.

Anandtech is a trash container, they badmouth everything what is AMD...
This is what I also questioned in a different topic at this site, curios how is the 45W I7 + ~45-65W HD8870 will do in a thin body? I'm afraid of lots of fan noise or overheating...
The another thing what I do not like is the two USB 2.0 ports. Are they kidding? My 2 years old budget Vostro 3555 already equipped with Four USB 3.0 ports without USB 2.0.
Other than these cons, I love the design of this Samsung
.

Which basically the source is Notebookreview, this very site. There's certainly work to be done on Enduro and unless AMD rectifies it, which I doubt so... 8870M or 7870M will not do well.

Basically if utilisation is not high, most of the processing power goes to waste. 20% in Borderlands 2 means slideshow (under 30fps).
Having at least one USB2.0 port is good for those who need Windows 7 and installation. Windows 7 requires drivers for USB3.0 and will not detect without the drivers. -
If USB 2.0 is necessary to installing older OS, than yes One USB 2.0 port make sense. But two for premium laptop?
Most of those links were created before driver 12.11 which supposed to fix Endoru problems. Perhaps still exist few minor issue and than Anandtech will make the Elephant, otherwise users are satisfied with results

Considering how atrocious was the amd card and driver in the first chronos i'm not surprised people doubt that amd can make half decent laptop gear.
Im personally staying away from amd and samsung for laptops when I have enough money to upgrade from my chronos -
About display: IMHO there are many chances that is the same of ASUS U500VZ, with these angles view it's enough sure that is a IPS or PLS, even Nits value is the same of Asus, in the market there very few 15.6" IPS display:
1) LG model used in ASUS U500VZ, Sony Vaio S15, HP Envy 15, HP Envy DV6. (orangegate display)
2) RGB IPS used in DELL Precison M4700 with 100% gamut coverage (but it's too expensive for this Samsung).
3) retina IPS used in rMBP,but the resolution doesn't correspond it.
4) IPS display used in HP ELITEBOOK with 100% gamut coverage (but it's too expensive for this Samsung).
So or this display is absolutely new, or it's enough sure that is LG model known for orangegate.
It's a little strange that Samsung doesn't say the technology that is used for display...
If they write IPS then automatically means is made by LG or someone else that uses IPS technology because Samsung doesn't make ISP display (Samsung has PLS) then they will be forced to admit that Samsung is using a LG display, in this way not many people will realize that IChronos is using a LG display.
About cooling system: We have seen in the past year many laptop that have throttling issue, but almost all these were using NVIDIA GPU, it's pretty sure that AMD GPU are much better about this area.
At this moment cooling system seems the only sector that needs investigation, because Samsung is using the same CPU used in rMBP (with a TDP of 45W) and very powerful GPU, so some accurate review is required. -
Accornding to this dutch site the chronos will be sold in the netherlands with a pls display:
http://tweakers.net/nieuws/86391/sa...nos-en-ultrabook-met-full-hd-touchscreen.html -
Yea if its using wide viewing tech its probably a PLS screen. if its IPS its probably the LG which from reports they have fixed the orangegate in recent models. My late 2012 S15 does not display any orangegate so there is hope.
as for the cooling system I really dont see how samsung will do it. maybe there is something in the 8000 series that makes the cards run a lot cooler. the Keplers run a lot cooler then their fermi brethren but the MBP still gets very hot under load with a 650m. -
According to the follow site, it seems PLS

After looking for a new laptop for months looks like Samsung finally stepped up. Was it so hard to come up with a design like this? 1080p pls display, discrete graphics, thin and light design, user upgradable hard disk (I think) just hope the price isn't ridiculous. It seems like every other laptop on the market leaves something to be desired. I just hope the execution matches the specs.

They say a non-touch version will be sold in the Netherlands and it will have a PLS display. So what about the touchscreen version?
The new hp Spectre XT Touchsmart has a 1080p IPS touchscreen and it's getting pretty good reviews. -
Hp Spectre XT is a 13.3"
Inviato dal mio GT-I9100 con Tapatalk 2 -
Ok, but this is the same panel of Sony S15, HP ENVY 15, HP Envy DV6 and Asus U500VZ.

The spectre xt has crap resolution. The 15" version is too heavy
-
I had trouble with a Lenovo X1 Carbon I had, then went with the touch version X1 Carbon Touch and also had problems (touchscreen issues).
So now I'm looking hard at this machine. I was very happy with my Samsung QX-410. This machine stood out to me when I saw it leak from CES. Anyone have any idea when it will drop in the states? :hi2:
I wonder if the Series 9 will get some kind of Win 8 / touch refresh too. -
I wouldn't get my hopes up too high just yet.
With a gpu this powerful it would most likely have its own fan, so that would make it as noisy as the asus ux51z which also has two fans and it is bloody loud and irritating according to most owners experience.
Why on earth would samsung not have 4 usb3 ports in this day and age. Most likely penny pinching even though the cost would be only a couple of bucks extra to have 4 usb3 ports instead of 2 usb3 and 2 usb2. Bloody ridiculous. Good on ya samsung. Asus n56vz has 4 usb3.
If the asus n56vz had an ips display it would have been the perfect laptop.
And what with this stupid vga port. A display port would have been the way to go here.
I was excited at first when seeing this new model. But now I am starting to be a little dissapointed.
My guess is samsung is waiting to bring all the good stuff when the haswell laptops are ready for release. This model is just a stop gap model to fill the void until then. -
I post regularly in the UX51VZ thread. The fans are not "bloody loud". They are just continuously running even when temperatures are cool. The Samsung has a decent shot of being perfectly silent under low load. Many laptops are, it can be done. Even the ASUS is most likely not mechanically limited.
I would have been almost tempted to return my UX51VZ and wait for the Samsung. But you know what, there will always be newer and better machines coming out. Haswell will come out in 2013 but may be mostly advantageous in the battery life department and iGPU. Unless you consider 11.5 hours of battery life too low, these are nearly irrelevant. -
I just got a reply from Samsung Slovenia. The new series 7 will be available on our market in early March, so the rest of you will probably be able to buy it at least a month earlier, if not already in January.
-
They probably could say nothing about the price?
-
Online retailers' average price is about 1.4k euros.
-
Do you think it will drop? Because I can't afford that. I don't need touchscreen, do you think that might help?
-
Where are you based, because you may want to check the Z5C's current price for a gauge.
-
Europe: Belgium
-
Belgium does not exist.
-
What? Seriously?
-
I think this is my next laptop. My only real concerns are the AMD GPU and screen quality, I hope both are a non-issue. Just waiting on pricing now...
-
Samsung's up at 5:00 PST. Let's hope to see some good news.
-
At CES? Is ther some place where I can follow it or read/see it afterwards?
-
It's a press event, so you would be able to read about it by the time you wake up tomorrow.
Event Schedule 07th Jan CES -
Okay thanks
