I understood the process of swapping the hd using the recovery software, but I'd like to explore other alternatives:
Case 1. If I use a clean Windows 8 (not W8 Pro) ISO to create a bootable USB stick, will the notebook recognize the embedded key?

Case 2. Can you confirm me that If I have a Windows 8 Pro ISO and a legit key I won't be able to install it? Or did I misunderstand something?

    Should be, yes.

It surfaced on the store "Canada computers"'s site a month or so ago.

It's also been seen at CES, mwc and cebit

Yes, as long as you copy the recovery partition it should work. However, keeping it in the hard drive is really handy tough. You can keep the copy in your usb as a backup.

Any news on those who ordered the 15" series 7 chronos from the UK? Any confirmation or tracking mails? Or delay?

    hi,

I have been reading this topic since january but only now I had enough free time to register... :D
So I would like to replace my Dell inspiron, and I can't choose between this and macbook pro. I know macbooks are expensive, but they last for years. (my dell's battery worked for a year or less.. now it doesn't want to charge so I have to bring the charger everywhere)
I don't really plan to play games on it as im a developer, so the new graphics card is not a must for me, but if im paying this much for a notebook that plus 100-200$ won't be a problem, so im waiting for the one with the HD8870 as well. I develop for windows and that's why I haven't bought the macbook yet.

What's your experience/opinion about samsung? do they have a great support like apple? how often does something go wrong in their devices/notebooks?
maybe this question will sound stupid but is it possible to keep the HD as a secondary drive (while the ssd is the primary)?

Do you need to reconfigure each time you use the program?

Were these programs registered to use the 8770??

If you register a program, does that program then always use the 8770m?

    per Samsung manual

    Can you explain why?
not portable enough? Mac OS? I would dual boot if I get a mbp.

My daughter is an engineering student at university and opted to replace her MAC with the new Series 7 Chronos. She uses several graphics modeling programs and the Chronos has been excellent for this so far. The touchscreen is great for manipulating modeled images and is one of several reasons she didn't want another MAC. She agrees with the observations of others that the speakers, touchpad, battery life, and display are outstanding. She isn't finding the weight to be a problem.

Great design, terrible OS. I literally hate Mac OS. It's so cumbersome to use and it's also loaded with glitches and bugs (That really surprised me)

It's my first Mac and I miss Windows terribly. Mac OS just isn't as fluid and nice to use, nor is it as functional. Not a lot runs on this machine.

Also, I do have Windows 8 dual booted via Boot Camp, but it is FAR from an ideal experience. For one, Apple has ZERO drivers for Windows 8, so things like trackpad gestures don't work, Brightness cannot be turned up all the way, and you cannot access the "Boot Camp Control Panel" from within Windows, it just throws an error message. There a lot of other problems with Windows 8 in boot camp but I can't remember them all right now.

Another deal-breaker about Windows 8 on this MBP is the fact that it does not switch graphics, meaning you'll be running on the 650m at all times when in Windows, meaning the battery life is far from good. It also gets very hot because of this.

That leads me to my next point, heat and performance. The SSD is good and the Processor are fine, but the GPU simply isn't up to the task of handling that 2880 x 1800 resolution. I have yet to find a game that can run at 2880 x 1800 with playable performance, even when dialing settings down. Even old games like Half Life 2 struggle, probably some kind of driver issue but still. And don't even think about running actual Windows in 2880 x 1800...things will be so small you'll have to use a magnifying class, even on 150% scaling. Heat is also a problem. Any time the dedicated GPU is running, whether at full load, the bottom of the machine becomes uncomfortably hot to use on your lap. This isn't a problem when I hook it up via HDMI to game with an Xbox controller, but it is otherwise. The aluminum right above the keyboard near the hinge will become so hot that it burns your hand when you touch it. Aluminum really is a bad dissipator of heat, which is why It's actually a smart move for Samsung to make the Chronos's bottom plastic.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things, but yeah I definitely can't wait to get this Chronos the minute the 8870m Touchscreen model comes on sale in the US.

Try placing an order online and getting it shipped to your current destination. It shouldnt take longer than 3-5 days to arrive. I am in canada and I orded mine through the american best buy site, shipped it to a relatives us mailing address. Ordered it on thursday and it had arrived by tuesday.

Still waiting for my chronos to get delivered to me. I notice many of the many owners ended up uninstalling all the bloatware manually. Would this be more efficient than a clean install for that sole purpose?

Maybe I should just go with the Series 7 Ultra and bring my [bulky] desktop PC for any demanding applications.

A dedicated gpu is better than no dedicated gpu.

    Hey guys,

I've been watching this thread from the beginning, as with Asus Zenbook UX51 thread. I'll probably be purchasing this product, I'm in the UK and am going to wait for first impressions from the fellows receiving it tomorrow before making a decision. I'd just like to point something out from the Currys/PCWorld webpages:
"Superbright 300nit Anti Reflective FHD LED Display with 10 point touchscreen panel"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 'Anti-Reflective' same as Matte? In which case, it's not likely to be touchscreen if it is Matte. I personally don't care whether it's glossy touch or matte non-touch, I'll buy it either way.

I received a phone call from Currys/PCWorld today. my first thought was "Oh no, there's a mistake and it's being cancelled", turns out that it definately is in stock, is the touchscreen model (though she didn't confirm the model number as I didn't think to ask!), all they were doing was a security check as I've spent nearly £1400 (Chronos, SSD and Office) and they wanted to make sure everything was OK for me to collect tomorrow at 17:00 GMT (that's going to be around 22 hours from now). I asked how come they were selling it already when it's not been officially announced by Samsung, but the poor lady didn't know - she was just processing my order.

22 hours is going to really drag!!

Touch screen version is glossy, you can watch some video on Youtube, there are several links in this thread.

I suggest to wait until first unit was delivered by Currys/PCWorld, there are already one user in this thread that has ordered from them, he will receive the unit tomorrow, therefore it is a very short waiting.
Because there is the possibility the Currys/PCWorld has made a mistake in their web pages and maybe they are selling the 770Z5E instead of 780Z5E (touch screen model).

ive actually done it a couple different ways... what I would recommend is to first use the Samsung Recovery application to make a factory backup disk to a usb drive. Make sure you check the option to make it bootable. Then go ahead and swap the drive... once done, go into bios and set Secure Boot to Disabled and Fast boot to Disabled and reboot... go into bios (f2) again and pick the usb device to boot from from the boot menu tab. If the USB drive doesn't appear and you have inserted it you might have to reboot and go into bios a third time for it to appear. Boot from the usb and follow the prompts to install the OS on your new drive. Remember to set the C/D partitions how you want them... by default they make the C drive too big IMO so I just made the C drive take the whole computer.

The screen glass is a trade off... to me if I press on the screen and it ripples underneath then the glass it too thin.... alot of notebooks fall into this category but I'm use to ipad touchness and want a screen that can take use without distrubing the lcd underneath. I guess its personal preference.

Thanks for this from me too, assuming all goes well getting my Chronos tomorrow, the first thing I'm going to do is swap out the drive for the SSD, and was wondering how this works! How big does the USB drive need to be?

Yes, but PCWorlds/Currys say the screen is both anti-reflective (matte) AND touch screen. I guess I'll just wait and see which it is, but I thought it wouldn't be possible to for them to be accurate on both counts.

Unless the glass is coated with an anti-reflective layer/coating, which means it could still be glossy but reduce reflections!

Yes once you set an app to 'High Performance' in switchable graphics it will always use the 8770. You actually have a few options... Standard, High Performance or Let power decide (which im assuming will use the 8770 on power and hd4000 on battery). You don't have to set it each time its a one time configuration for each app.

The first boot is about 40 seconds... after it gets all its updates it will boot in 19-21 seconds off the standard 5400rpm HD. I swapped this out for a samsung 840 ssd and my boots are between 8-9 seconds now.

Yes you should be able to swap the optical drive in the 17" with a caddy for HDD. It's 9.5mm, and not every caddy might fit.

Bit disappointed that the new chronos series doesnt have mSATA connector.

If the question is regarding mSATA, I don't see connector that use this standard.

Anyone find a good case for this yet? I'm looking for a slip case or maybe a light briefcase of messenger bag... basically the lightest possible that will at least cover it and not be so big that it flops around inside.

Hey Alchemist, here's a question for ya:

Since putting in the SSD, do you notice a weight difference? A friend of mine has an 840 and I remember it being EXTREMELY light, way lighter than the original HDD for sure. Is there any noticeable difference?

Take better care of your battery. If you're gonna have a laptop plugged in anyway you should take the battery out. Newer machines have a tool that stops charging the battery at 50% or 80% to extended its usable life.
There are plenty of laptops out there with Core i5 and i7 processors with no graphics cards you can save your money on.
Samsung's Series 7 notebooks are very high quality and reliable and have good reviews. I don't know about their support because nothing's wrong with my original Series 7 yet.

How often something happens depends on what you do and how you take care of the laptop.
Yes, it requires replacing the DVD drive with a HDD caddy.

I haven't noticed a huge difference but the samsung 840 weighs in at 53.5g while the spinning platter ways in at about 110g. So your saving about 56.5g off the weight of the laptop or just shy of 2 ounces lighter. To put it in perspective an iphone 5 weighs 112g so the weight savings is equal to 1/2 of an iphone 5. Not a huge difference, but every little bit helps I suppose.

Yep, they are similar dimensions although some cases are too tight. I haven't found a good selection locally to test out though so probably going to mail order something and want to see if anyone else has found something that works so I don't do as much trail and error. lol.
