@alchemist been reading your statement about using the recovery tools to image the factory settings to a USB device before installing the SSD, how big do you reckon that is? Will an 8gb pen drive be enough? Or do I need bigger or an external HD? I might have to get something larger than I've got and don't want to mess around going back and forward to the shops!
-
Pretty sure that someone said earlier in this thread that you needed 16gb minimum
-
Dammit, that's more money I have to spend.
On a VERY positive note, though, I've just had confirmation that my Chronos will be delivered for collection from store tomorrow, it's been dispatched with their daily delivery, so unless the lorry gets hijacked or has an accident, looks like I will get this tomorrow, as hoped. -
This is so awesome! Now just when the hell is it coming to the US? haha
-
It says you need 15.6gb of space... I used a 32gb pen drive just to be sure but it would probably work fine with a 16gb drive. Since 16gb was $11 and 23gb was $18 at microcenter i just went large.
-
Nice, which one?
-
Anyone know if swapping the 4gb for 8gb of memory will effect battery life?
-
No reason it should.

16gb ram, touch screen, and a 650m? Weird. -
I use a laptop sleeve made by foof for my HP envy that I originally bought for my old macbook pro (the one with an ati x1600). They look really nice and are pretty high quality as well! You can only buy them online, though.. and i think they ship from Australia.
Btw I posted this a while back but I guess it got lost in between posts.. has anyone ever tried testing battery life in silent mode?? -

Thanks man. -
My last word (i hope) on this whole grainy screen thing... tonight I went through microcenter and best buy comparing screens. After looking at at least 50 screens, in notebooks, tablets and external monitors I don't think the screen is grainy at all, in fact I would put it on par with the best monitors I looked it. It all comes down to pixel density... all lcd screens are made up of a grid of dots... the fewer dots per inch the easier it is to see the thin black line around each pixel... the greater dots per inch the more this line becomes a blur / smudge or no longer visible... apple calls screens where the pixels are no longer visible to the human eye a retna display. Well on the chronos screen the dots are close enough together that you can hardly see the black line but its not completely invisible. All screens have this to some extent until they hit retna resolutions.

any word on when the new laptop will be released?
-
Around 12 hours until I get hold of and can test this baby out.
Anyone recommend the best tools to use to give you all the info you want?
Throttling, heat, speeds, etc? -
Here is my test suite more or less...
Crystal Disk Mark for the HD performance
wPrime for CPU performance
3dmark 06 - DirectX 9.x performance
3dmark 11 - DirectX 11.x performance
New 3d Mark - All round gpu performance (will not auto recognize the CPU)
passmark CPU benchmark.
BatteryMon to monitor battery usage.
Windows Experience Index Scores
Fraps for displaying framerates in different games.
speedtest.net to test wifi performance. (although need to run the test on multiple machines on the same internet connection to see if its fast/slow or normal). -
I am literally so jealous of you.
It sucks because I have the feeling the US won't see the model you're about to get until the Best Buy exclusivity runs out. Really hope that isn't the case though, and hopefully the touchscreen 8870m model will follow next week. -
Sorry about that, of course, this could all be a mis-information from the shop and not be the right model at all, if thats the case, i'll be coming home with my money back and no laptop, and you'll all get a good laugh at my expense!!
There was no indication it would be available in the UK either, it's not even on the Samsung UK site yet, beyond a few tech specs - it's not on the available laptop pages, I only happened across it from Currys/PCWorld by sheer fluke, it could have just gone on there 10 seconds or 2 weeks before I looked, I have no idea! I only asked Samsung last week about availability (and have subscribed to their release e-mails) and there was no indication it would be available for a while yet (i.e. no noise about this laptop at all!). So we'll find out in about 10 hours! #excited -
I won't laught at all, but I will get angry only with Samsung for this 2-3 months of bad information about REAL availablity in every country !!!
Hope to see also the glare non touch 8870 version, it's the one I will buy if release by may -
In Germany they started rolling out:
Samsung 770Z5E (NP770Z5E-S02) 15 Zoll Notebook: Notebook Preisvergleich - Preise bei idealo.de
Shouldn't take long for world wide release. Still no clue for touch version... -
Hi,
yes it's seem so. Can't wait to get one. But still it's not clear for me, what is the difference between NP770Z5E- S01 and NP770Z5E- S02 expect win 8 pro, which is no reason for me at all.
Also interesting is the pricing... £1099 for the touch version on currys PC World compared to 1299€ -1800€ for the "non"touch version in Germany based on idealo. -
Damouk, if you could do alchemist's suggestions that'd be awesome. Could you perhaps also try to install the newest 13.2 drivers and see if performance increases?
And if you, I know it's very unlikely, have a 120w psu lying around with the right connector, could you test whether it improves performance? -
Lucky you
and congratz... waiting for feedback and first impressions
-
Please, how much did you pay for this? -
So to put the arguments to rest, the Currys/PCWorld Chronos 7 DEFINITELY IS a touchscreen and has the HD8870M and i7-3635QM
Only downside so far - no built in SSD, meaning I have to open it to put one in! And soldered 4gb RAM, meaning the max capacity is 12gb (8gb is probably enough for me anyway, so upgrade to 12 will be a future change!)
But we already knew both of those, so no great surprise!
Might have to finish work early today, if I can sneek out. -
£1099.99 - not sure what country you're in, so you can do your own conversion - that's British Pounds. Great Britain also has 20% tax (VAT), so you would need to allow for that!
-
Error,!,.,!
Double post! -
If £1100 already contains 20% VAT then the original price is around £916 = $1373 in the US perhaps. Close price range to the $1200 amd8770 version (with $100 bonus by bestbuy otherwise actually costing $1300)
-
Long time lurker in this thread...first time poster
Can you check whether the back is aluminum or plastic?
Thanks! -
WOW
, I can't believe at this price for 780Z5E, it's lower than 770Z5E in the rest of Europe and even others UK store.
I suggest to others UK people to launch themselves to buy one before that retailer realizes its mistake

Sorry, should have specified - £1099.99 does contain VAT - that's the total I paid for the machine.
As soon as I open the packaging, I'll let you know. I suspect it's plastic though!
3ish hours to go! -
Man, I 'm so jealous!! BTW, Samsung always advertised "full aluminium" in their pages...
let us know as much as you can please! Do you think you can do an unboxing and a close up?

The model (Series 7 Chronos but with i5 and lower end GPU) I saw on display yesterday at Currys had a plastic back. High quality plastic though.
If you can claim back the VAT then it is almost the same price as the BestBuy model for a slightly better spec, I'd forgotten about that. -
Do video unboxing and first use pleeeease...
Inviato dal mio GT-I9300 con Tapatalk 2 -
Please quit or go home already.... I have been clicking refresh for more than an hour....
-
It's real!!!! This is still such good news!!! Too bad there's no word anywhere on a US release...
-
Everything but the bottom of the laptop is aluminum
-
Is it just me or has the 8770m model with Touchscreen disappeared from Best Buy's site?
-
Has this been posted already?
Test Samsung Serie 7 Chronos 770Z5E S02 Notebook - Notebookinfo.de Tests
If I have not missed anything, this is the first review of NP770Z5E with HD8870M. It does seem the model (matte screen) is arriving in German stores. Yipiiiieee!
What still puzzles me is the difference between S-01 and S-02. Win 8 Pro cannot justify a price difference of 200 Euros, can it?
To put the review's results in a nutshell: They give praise to body, build quality, touchpad, sound, graphics performance, noise and temperature levels, and display (they say it is an IPS screen!!!).
What does not come as a surprise is that the HD is considered as an impediment of sorts to overall performance, but what does is battery performance: Just above 6 hours maximum, 1 hour 9 minutes under load, and 3 hours 39 minutes average use. Sounds contradictory to what alchemist reported (many thanks by the way for sharing your experiences!). Maybe they did not bother to optimise energy settings? -
Sure enough it looks like its gone. Hmm...
-
Exclusivity gone?! 8870 model here we come!!
Hahaha....I hope.... -
It's still on their site.

Now available at John Lewis (U.K)

Any deals out there on the Samsung 840 pro? Also which ram do you guys suggest to put in this thing? I plan on buying in the next few weeks, just waiting on info on the 8870 version or info on the non touch version (if screen quality is that much superior). Any ideas on the ram? I want to do all this first time I open. Played with it in best buy yesterday and this is a nice laptop

On the 8870 model?
I know the best buy 8770 has the plastic bottom, i'm just hoping the 8870 has an all aluminum chassis.
I don't want to upset anyone, but i was not that impressed with the case design when i checked it out in best buy last week. I much prefer the MBPr or chrome pixel, but that's just me. Don't get me wrong, i will still be buying the 8870 Chronos 7 if the early adopters give the thumbs up, but design-wise I just prefer a monolithic slab over the tapering design of the sammy. -
There are a lot of videos about unboxing of 780Z5E eve if it's the BestBuy version, the chassis is the same.
The info that we need is about Throttling.
I suggest to perform the same test that usually Notebookcheck perform.
Prime95+Furmark for at least 5 minutes but would be better for 10 minutes.
You must be sure that Furmark runs on GPU so you have to set it in Control Panel of Catalyst.
Before to start the test should set HWinfo64 in log mode, in this way it creates a CSV file that you can post in this thread, so we can see the result of your test.
To be sure that HWinfo64 logs the 8870m you have to run some software that use 8870m before to launch HWinfo64. -
Question about the graphic drivers. Whats the deal on updating the graphic drivers on the new Samsung Chronos? Is as simple as downloading the latest vanilla Intel and AMD drivers or it requires special Samsung signed drivers??
I am asking this because I had a dramatically bad experience in an AMD based HP Envy 17. It requires HP specific driver while the HP nVIDIA based notebooks can run vanilla drivers from both Intel and nVIDIA.
Which case applies to the new Chronos? -
I have a rMBP and the all aluminum chassis is good from a build quality and looks standpoint, but terrible for heat dissipation. I talked about this in a long post a while ago.

It's still saying out of stock. They've had several new Series 7 machines listed for a while. It looks like Currys/PCWorld have exclusivity for the moment, although whether this is by formal agreement with Samsung UK or just through bad organisation, I don't know...
A shame, as John Lewis have a better returns policy than Currys - they said that the only way I could return it if I didn't like it was with store manager approval.
