Sadly stuck at work, something urgent came up - it's killing me!! :-(

As soon as I get home, I'll let you know

BTW, the John lewis version is (I think) the non-touch model, for same price as (well, 4p less) Currys/PCWorld touch version.

NP770Z5E-S01 is the model name of non touch screen version, so Touch screen YES is most likely just a typo.

I wonder if 780Z5E price of Currys/PCWorld is a mistake, it's incredibly good, also Germany usually has the better prices in Europe (VAT 19%, but not only for this) and for the same price of Currys/PCWorld you can only obtain the 770Z5E, but even others UK retailers for the same price offer only the 770Z5E.

Got mine :) But been called back into work. Had a 10 minute play. It is the NP780Z5E-S01UK Touchscreen with AMD 8870 GFX card. It is super nice. The bottom is plastic, I couldn't careless but I know some do. Once finished work, will do a backup and replace the hard drive to SSD. More updates in a couple of hours.

So I've got it home, opened it up (sorry, no unboxing video).

Typing on it now - this thing is amazing. So a couple of initial observations:
    - This has been in the back of my car all afternoon and the metal is FREEZING cold and so was the back - misted up as soon as I touched it. However, it's on my knees and the back has already warmed up, the front is still cold - ergo, the back is plastic - but it is really good quality.
    - The screen is glossy, but definitely has anti reflective properties, the reflection is much less than my old glossy screen.
    - The screen is really good. I see what people mean about a so called graininess though - it's really not that bad. It really is faint and I think it is just from the shimmer of the glass used on the touchscreen - my iPad has a similar thing - if you were going from matt plastic screen to glass, I could understand the concerns, but it really is NOT an issue.
    - The touchpad is really nice, although I keep catching it with my palm and moving the cursor, but that's just because I'm used to a much smaller touchpad - once I'm used to it it won't be a problem.

    Watch this space for more!!

If they cost the same in your country, you could go for the touch. You can always put on an anti-glare screen cover if you really hate the glossiness. I'm going for matte since it's cheaper, faster available and I don't think touch has a real purpose on a laptop. But it's always a nice extra if it isn't more expensive.

To all you that finally bought the laptop they've been waiting for: congratulations. I'm sorta jealous because I can't wait myself!

Of course it's going to throttle. But that is hard from a deal breaker, it's just a matter of how MUCH it throttles.

Happy to do a stress test but I have not got Crysis 3, Battlefield 3 or Assassins creed 3. Do any have demos I can test? Also which CPU monitor should I use?

Awesome, I am waiting for the s01FR. Does anyone know whether you can get fnac to deliver to Belgium?
Or another site that sells the french verion (apart from amazon.fr, they don't have it in stock)?

Is one of the 8870m owners testing? I can't wait for your experiences.

Any game you have would be great. and some benchmarks too. I heard hwinfo64 is good for that.

    Hey guys

Been following this thread from the start. Buying the machine from Currys probably next week? Anyway, I got some info for the UK peeps wanting to buy the machine from PC World/Currys.

I've rang head office at Currys since they're now out of stock and pushed them for information. I've found out they have 196 coming into their distribution centre on Saturday. These are of course for the whole country and I was informed these should be in the stores before the end of next week. Hope this helps some peeps!

Congrats to the guys who've got their hands on one this evening. I read with envious eyes :)

I eagerly await some high end game play videos!

GAME LINK: Heres a link for Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo. Couldn't find anything for Crysis 3 Demo as it was a Beta which I think has now ended

Use HWinfo64 to create a log of your tests, you can obviously see the real time of clock and temps of CPU

hey all, ive been researching and decided on this laptop about a month ago. i finally jumped into this forum today. Very nice to see 263 pages of posts from people just as excited (and impatient) as I am. it tough to wait on a product you are already sold on, especially when you dont know a release date or price. waiting for this to go on sale from a reputable seller in the US.

touch isnt a HUGE deal to me, but it looks really cool in the videos ive been seeing. what really sold me was the power fit into such a sleek laptop, especially the 8870. these different models are a bit confusing.

    /back to lurker status

Aren't 3rd party anti-glare screen covers of less quality in terms of picture quality compared to what Samsung would provide?

yes, for sure, you will notice a definite reduction in clarity. i mean, just look at your smartphone and tablets. anti glare screens, no matter how good, reduces the image quality. personally, i have just come to accept that i need to clean screens often, and dont use screen protectors.

im waiting on official pricing personally. the touch isnt a huge deal for me, but if its only nominally extra, ill go that route. as far as the glossy, i wouldnt put too much stock in that. from what ive read (and what im used to with the Envy line of laptops), its really not that big of a deal, and the image quality seems better on the glossy screens

Have you ever used a macbook pro and another windows laptop, both with glossy screens? The windows ones always use this cheap, flimsy glass/surface and has this ugly glare and cushion-ness to it. The macbook pros a lot harder and clearer glass on top that makes it look more premium. I'm afraid that's how Samsung's will be.

Can anyone comment on this Samsung's screen surface? Is it as solid as a macbook pro's screen?

I've seen it today. The bottom is in fact plastic, its not bad but its far from aluminium. Build quality is great and aluminium coating is much better than on Asus. No hard edges, nice cold feeling. Its the best looking notebook I have seen, very modern design and Asus looks outdated standing next to it. The best part of this notebook is the aluminium screen with Samsung logo on it, great to touch, feels expensive.
The screen is grainy, not very grainy but you can clearly see the "dirt" on whites. It has high contrast so colours are darker and deeper than on standard panel. similar to IPS in Asus. Pixel grid is not visible but if you look from some angles you may see the net of dots from touchscreen.

    So in my opinion:

    Screen 6/10
    Build quality 10/10
    Bottom plastic 4/10

Overall the best notebook you can buy at the moment.

The funny thing is that S01 cost £1100 but S02 is already reduced from £1000 to £900.

I suppose you have seen the 770Z5E, right?
What the difference between S01 and S02?
From some retailer the difference between S01 and S02 seems only Windows 8 Pro on S02, but some other retailer says the S02 is a lower specs machine, for example i5 instead of i7, what is your case?

It doesn't seems a big deal because seems that Samsung uses a LiteOn SSD instead of its 840 Pro series, so if you can buy at 1299€ adding others 200€ you can buy an 256Gb 840 Pro, so you have a better SSD and a plus of 1TB HDD, the only minus is that you haven't Windows 8 Pro.

What I really want to see are the objective tests... since the CPU is the same and the HD is the same the only real point of comparison between this and the best buy model is the GPU. So I would love to see 3dmark 06, 11 and the new 3dmark test results. It will let us see where the 8870 falls which will give us a good idea how much its throttling.

There are too many ways it could throttle between heat and Power supply so its more a question of how much the throttling effects performance.

My gut feeling is that the 8770 comes in around the 650m and the 8870 will come in around the 660m. But I have no info to back that up yet.

Gave up trying to post benchmarks, upload wouldn't work.

Instead decided to pop the SSD in! And it really is easy to take the cover off, like others mentioned, start from the front, I used an iPhone kit plastic lever to pry it open, worked a treat. You just need to be a little careful around all the ports as its clipped between each of them, then just roll it off the back, it's not clipped, just hooked over the hinge/chassis.
I did find that the screws holding the drive caddy were a little tight and it required a bit of pressure to release them, which caused the board it's mounted to to flex a bit, but it's pretty tough.

You can fit a 7 or 9mm drive in here I reckon, there was plenty of space around the 840 pro which is 7mm.

I will retry the benchmarks after recovering Windows.

Not used to Windows 8 and have to say, I don't like it much, yet. Plan to virtualise Windows 7 though, so will have the best of both worlds.

I wonder if 770 model has lower graininess than 780 because the graininess issue seems to be present even in others notebook with glass over display as Dell XPS15 L521x which has a TN panel or maybe it's just the anti-reflective filer included in touch screen model that cause grainy screen.

Confused! Both 770 and 780 are available from Currys/PCWorld in the Uk now - admittedly they might be out of stock (haven't checked though, just read it in a previous post!), and too busy playing with my 780Z5E S01 right now!

I have just done the same, 840 Pro is in, struggled a bit more with the cover than you did. Recovery program is running now so hopefully will be like I started once complete... I`m eagerly waiting to have a proper play. Oh and yes, I do realise how extremely lucky I am to have one! All signs are, its well worth the wait, all 3 months of it!

Has anyone who has any version of the 15 inch series 7 chronos heard the MSI gt60's speakers? If so how do they compare?

Definitely worth the wait, and think we're both really lucky - wonder how many others have managed to get hold of one of these babies. So my recovery just got to 100%, now just waiting for it finish configuring the recovery partition - which seems to be taking ages!

One thing that surprised me is the weight of this - its still quite light compared to my old Sony Vaio, but its so thin I thought it would be lighter - then realised that its a fairly large piece of glass and all that aluminium, kind of makes sense really.

Paid £1099.99 for it. I can do a benchmark but NotebookCheck benchmarks are already done on the same setup (except 17inch) and they would be much more through than I ever would.
