Never opened a laptop before. Decided im buying this but cant deal with the hdd...so im buying the ssd.
1.How would I image the older drive image to the ssd and would i need to do with partitions?
2. Would a 120Gb samsung 840 pro be enough?

It's up to you whether a 120gb drive would be enough.
-
Personal opinion: 120 GB for Windows, softwares and data might be a little tight. If I were you, I'd go for the 256 GB (and I will, when it's available in Italy!)
-
if you think 120 GB is tight now, just wait a few years. You are getting into tablet territory at that HDD space. Personally, i think 250gb is too tight for my use.
-
I'm waiting for the 1tb ssds to go below $400
There's one at $600 right now so I'm hoping holiday season -
Exactly. You're not supposed to see it during the day, only when the light is extremely low. My Mac is the same way. It won't even let you turn it on when the ambient light is too bright!

I've had a 512 raid 0 SSD on my vaio Z. Never used more than 10%. I stream everything.
But the only problem for me is installing the ssd. Never opened a laptop and just would hate to break this thing when i get it. Anyone mind doing a video changing their SSD. Would be handy for this forum.

I haven't checked out the prices for samsung SSD's yet, but I was thinking (if they are insanely expensive for the UK consumer) of getting the cheapest model to store windows and my program files, and then using a high capacity memory card for all my media? I know thats what some owners of the asus u500 planned to do until they realised the memory card slot was so poorly designed that the cards didn't slot all the way in..
P.S. can owners of the chronos 7 just check that SD's cards do fit? Thanks! -
News from Currys UK
It has been brought to my attention that there will be a delay in the delivery of your SAMSUNG - Series 7 Chronos 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop Silver.
We are now expecting stock week commencing 10/03/2013
As soon as we receive stock we will dispatch your item and we will email you once stock has been received to confirm delivery arrangements. -
Someone said earlier on that it sticks out, with only around 1/3 of it actually being in the laptop
-
To all those who have replace their hard drive with the Samsung 840 Pro, how much hard drive are you getting. Mine is 256GB and I'm only getting 220GB. Was expecting 7-10% but this is a bit more. Wandering if I have a setup problem.
-
That is correct.
Incidentally, copy speeds to the HD from an Extreme Sandisk 16GB card were around 20Mb/s.

That's right - the Chronos I saw at Currys Oxford Street the other night had a SD card filler that was shorter than a SD card, so yes, an SD card would protrude. To dlau77: if this is a problem, then I suggest that at the same time as you buy the SSD, buy a USB 3 enclosure and stick the old 1TB drive in that. -
That sounds about right. I put in a 250gb Samsung 840 (not pro) and my main volume is 215mb.
Assuming you used the 'factory' recovery disk to restore your OS to the new drive there is a 15+ gb recovery partition. Also, hard drives are measured in units of 1000 (1000 bytes is a k, 1000k is a mb, 1000mb is a gb) to get the capacity listed on the box... but the computer looks at them in units of 1024 (1024 bytes is a k, 1024k is a mb, 1024mb is a gb) so your actual space is a bit lower than you would think to begin with.
I have mine fairly loaded up at this point... visual studio 2012, 5 other dev tools, photoshop, 3d modeling and rendering software, office, indesign, and a good 10gb of data and im sitting at 130gb free, so i'm happy with the space on my 250gb. -
How easy or hard it is to replace the HDD??
Also Is the battery internal on this notebook? -

Thank you so much for doing that! Rep added. -
The battery is internal... its a big one too at 91000+mwh.
Its not that hard to replace the HDD, provided you know where to start... suffice it to say I make it more difficult than it was the first time I popped the case. Essentially you just undo the screws, use a credit card to separate the bottom from the case along the FRONT edge then the sides and the back. and reverse the procedure to pop it back together when you are done. -
Thanks a lot Alchemist, that's put my fears to rest.
-
Ok thanks for confirming the SD design flaw. I already own a WD 1TB HD so I should be fine, I'd just rather not have to carry it around with me, like I currently do for my dell laptop.
Actually, I bought my current SSD from crucial (own brand 128gb), is there anyway of knowing whether or not it will be compatible with the samsung too? -
Thanks for the info, I just want to make sure its not a screw under screw under screw.
I also previously asked if the notebook can install vanilla graphic drivers directly downloaded from Intrel and AMD websites, (some notebooks with switchable graphics require a signed driver from manufacturer and its a pain), If anyone can verify this for me will be very appreciated.
Edit: I just noticed that the official AMD drivers tor the Radeon 8XXX series are not out yet, so I guess my question regarding the vanilla drivers can wait
Can you guys comment on the speakers quality? Loud and clear? Is a mini Subwoofer included? -
whosscruffylooking Notebook Enthusiast
I wouldn't say it was a design flaw; the SD card should still be firmly gripped, and maybe it's a good thing that you can see you have an SD card inserted? I guess it depends on what sort of bag you use, whether it will knock the SD card or something.
Crucial SSD should be fine so long as its SATA, not mSATA. I'm thinking of getting a Crucial myself - haven't decided yet on what SSD to get, or what size. -
Alchemist,
I was wondering how the laptop was holding up in 3D rendering. I plan on installing Solidworks on the machine. It seems to have more than enough CPU and GPU power but I was wondering if you've had any issues.
Thanks! -
thanks dude. I have ordered one last night. Probably i will hear from them sometime next week. -

I finally got my chronos 7 today (best buy version). Had a family member ship it to me from the states as i reside in canada. The $100 promotion best buy was offering was too good too fast up. As I believe the retail price for whenever it would hit canadian shelves would be close to $1350. I think I will got it cheaper despite having to pay shipping. Have not had the chance to open it up and completely play around with it but the build quality is great from the first impression. Its not too light but yet not too heavy, it feels sturdy in the hands. All the keys on the keyboard seem even as i read some one had noticed otherwise. The screen is firm when you pull it back and forth, or open/close the lid. Its a sleep looking laptop no doubt
-
if you are a gamer though, this extra 130gb would fill up quickly. i think thats my main concern with HDD size, i do anjoy PC games, and have quite a Steam library. Current games can be close to 20gb in space. it really comes down to personal use.
-
No Subwoofer, but the sound quality is pretty good, my old Vaio was a Blu-ray equiped multimedia machine with speakers on top, in front of the scree, which I thought was great for sound particularly with music & movies - this is better.
-
So far its been great, as you said the CPU/GPU is more than enough for good previews and fast rendering, when you add the ssd I put in, it just flys. Probably as it doesn't waste alot of time loading textures and such. I haven't played with it as much as I'd like yet, still installing stuff. I haven't used solid works, but don't see why it wouldn't fly on this.

So that's BestBuy and Currys models confirmed then! Thanks! -
Yea, I'm not the gamer I used to be though. I might have 1-3 games on my system at any given time... right now its Torchlight 2, Sins of a Solar Empire and Skyrim, they are all on steam and I have other games on steam too, just don't have them installed. For me my biggest space eater is desktop publishing documents, rendered 3d images and animations, right behind that are dev tools... MS visual studio is the hog of those though at 2-3gb. I offload photos and movies and such to my NAS so I don't have a space concern there. I figure ill have over 100gb free after everything is installed and operating. Oh I forgot the other space eater, VMs. I probably have 12gb in virtual machines i need to move over.

Could you possibly run a demanding game, such as Crysis, with hwinfo64 to see the extent of throttling? Currently only thing holding me back form buying it.

Pay & Collect is now unavailable anywhere in London it seems - hopefully there will be more stock on Monday, or maybe available to reserve tomorrow.
-
anyone know an efficient and effective way to clean the exterior of the laptop, including the screen and keyboard. I am not sure if using something windex would be the best route, especially with the chemicals in it.
-
I use these for my laptop screens (and keyboards), my reading glasses, and my smartphones and tablets.
Amazon.com: Zeiss Pre-Moistened Lens Cloths Wipes 200c: Health & Personal Care
They work great, and amazon prime and reasonably priced in bulk. I like how they come individually wrapped, i keep some in my laptop bag, my wife keeps some in her purse, etc. dont need to worry about any drying out, etc.
my current laptop (the one i plan on replacing with a series 7 chronos) is the original Envy 14 with a radiance display. The display seems similar and these work fantastic on the envy screen. -
thanks for that, going to give these a try.

I have two questions no one seems to be answering directly. (Especially #1) There seems to be a consensus that "recovering your OS" to an SSD is the best way to get your legal license and activation on to a SDD.
However,
1. After recovering your OS to the SSD, is the SSD aligned correctly? The first time I put Windows on an SSD without proper alignment I was getting like 80% less performance.
2. The recovery file is like 16gb, which is too big for a 16gb usb. Is there another way to get this file to boot without having to buy a 32gb usb?
PS - I would have rated this laptop 9.7/10 if I were able to install my Windows 8 license onto my SSD. It's an outrage that Microsoft is making it difficult for userto upgrade parts when that's a big reason many people haven't gone to Mac. -
Any of you guys can comment on this: Samsung Series 7 Chronos Full Review - YouTube
He is complaining on the low screen quality, that according to this user is caused by the touch layer.
Meanwhile most of the screen review, reactions and impressions are at least outstanding... -
People notice it but it doesn't bother some. I have a small OCD when it comes to HD screens and etc.
I will say it's an amazing laptop but I couldn't stand the grainy-ness of it. -
Don't actually have any recent PC games, went down the xbox route some time ago. I will see if I can get something over the weekend to try this with.

Been busy installing and migrating my old machine onto this one (I do actually need to use it to do things, other than browse the web!) so I've only popped onto these forums a few times this evening.
1. I did a recovery onto the Samsung 840 Pro 256gb drive, I see no problems, plus the Magician software allows you to optimise the machine to use the SSD. Not sure if this gives any different performance to the clean install (as I currently have no way of doing that!), but it's pretty damned quick - read/write both WELL over 500mb/s and I've optimised for Reliability rather than performance. Windows boots in about 5 seconds.
2. I think the recovery file will fit onto a 16gb, just. I bought a 32gb pen drive, it was only £20, and after spending over a grand on the laptop, I figured I had no argument not to get the 32gb. However, you could install this recovery to an external USB drive, or if you have the equipment, a Blu-ray disc, via external drive.
Hope this helps. PS 9.7/10 is definitely fair, it's not the laptops fault Microsoft are being difficult with licensing! -
In regards to #1, If you install the OS onto the SSD using the factory recovery disk made using the recovery app samsung includes then best guess is that everything will be installed properly. This procedure partitions the drive, and reinstalls everything. I did crystal disk mark tests afterward on my samsung 840 equipped unit and its the fastest drive Ive ever used... and performance numbers meet or exceed specs. 500+ mb/s sequential reads are nice.
The factory recovery disk takes up 15.6gb. I think it was designed to fit on a 16gb usb drive, but I put mine on a 32gb just because I didn't want to run back to the store and buy a bigger one if it didnt fit in 16gb. -
Nobody actually knows for sure if you can install a straight copy of windows 8 or not, or if it will recognize the serial number or not. It may very well. This whole secure boot is new to windows 8 and people aren't comfortable with it yet so tend to error on the side of caution. The plus side of secure boot is that boot sector viruses and malware of other sorts should be ALOT harder to get infected with than without secure boot.

There is a very slight graining effect, but to me it seems to be part of the glass (I suspect it might be a reflection reducing coating, or maybe related to the touch technology). Looking at it, my iPad has a similar graininess effect. It's really not a distraction, and actually, coming from a 1600*900 glossy plastic TFT screen, this display still blows that out of the water, plus my work laptop and screens. I've actually compared this screen to others at work too and I notice that when you look at any of them, nearly all screens seem to have some kind of texturing which causes what could be considered graininess - I still think this display is better than all of those - it will only become an annoyance if you let it - forget about this and enjoy the Chronos for all its magnificence.
-
Also as I said before that guy had so high expectations. He made like 10 videos about it, for when he heard about it, when he ordered it, and then like 8 when he got it.
He loved it at first, saying the screen was amazing, etc. saying how it was the best thing he has ever used.
But nothing can ever meet high expectations, and his were definitely high. Any tiny problem would have set him off, and this did -
Is there actually a download there? Doesn't seem to work for me!
-
Heeeemm, click on right of the screen, where it say "download crysis 3 demo multiplayer", it will load a page where around 50 valid mirrors.. That's it!
Inviato dal mio GT-I9300 con Tapatalk 2 -
No, I took the recovery image route as I don't have a Windows 8 install disc. It still seems to work perfectly well (then again, it could be that it's so powerful you can't tell anyway, though). I also used the Magician software to optimise the PC, which made a big difference in the Samsung benchmark tool included with that application.
-
Crysis 3? This link is for Crysis 2! Still, downloading one of those now (half the links are actually dead - at least for me!) - 1.6gb and it's already over 50% done! Will probably give this a proper go/benchmark test over the weekend though.
Anyone know how to tell if it's throttling?
