There'll be no effect on battery life as both models will use the hd4000 when on battery

The new Series 7 owners might want to comment on the Asus UX51V reviewed here. How does it compare?

that's what i figured, just curious if anybody actually ran the test though.

i'm digging around for the US release of the 8870, infuriating when you don't get any information about things like this.

According to SW Update, there's a BIOS Update, which is supposed to "Improve system stability" (updates to version P03ABU) . Maybe those of you having issues might get some better results running this.

EDIT: Except I can't get this to install. Keep getting Error -502. any ideas?

There was someone here, I can't remember who, who wanted to know whether fnac had given me a date to expect the NP770Z5E-S01FR. They estimated 22/03 for the send date. It should be here 3-5 days later. So around the 27th :(.

While I have a feeling many of you already know this, there is a way to monitor the activity of your graphics drivers. GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

I had Samsung in my computer remotely today. They were able to verify that the AMD 8700 series driver was indeed performing. I don't really understand why this wasn't suggested to me sooner, but better late than never. Also, if you go to Samsungs website, they have put the #NP780Z5e-S01 model on their site with all it's information, specs and price, as well as all current software and firmware offered to date. Series 7 15.6

Great that it's finally on their site
So I guess the s01 having the 8770m isn't exclusive to bestbuy
Let's hope the s02 comes out soon!
I've had no luck with contacting Samsung via Facebook, maybe someone else can try?

It seems the only variant that has not reached the market yet, it's the model with 16GB RAM ( 8GB soldered).
I wonder if for the rest of Europe where 780Z5E that is not out yet, it will come only with 16GB RAM.
Otherwise it will not be so I do not think we ever see a 16GB version, I think it's uneconomic for Samsung to release too many versions of the same notebook.

Has anyone info about 16GB versions or 780Z5E for the rest of Europe?

I can't get this to go past the splash screen, downloading from your link even running as Administrator. Am I missing something?

EDIT: Server was overloaded - managed to do this with the BIOSUpdate.exe software.

Aha it was you :) I have great news for you!

    Samsung NP770Z5E-S01FR - Fnac.com - Ordinateur portable
Status now is: "en stock" instead of: "sous réserve de disponibilité, expédié entre 4 à 12 jours".
This might speed up things a lot. Because when it goes in stock, your order will be sent under 48 hours, which is a lot less than within 12 days! It will take a little longer for me since I'm letting them ship to my home in Belgium, but nonetheless, great news!.

The only site that has a 16gb version is Canada Computers, but it's been on back order for close to 3 months I believe

However there's no doubt that a 16gb version will come out, at least in the US/Canada.

They previewed it at CES and they said that "the 16gb version with a 1tb hd will be out in the march-April time frame for $1699"

I see it is popping up at some European retailers, but so far, the 15.6" Series 7 Chronos with 1080p display and 8870m is still not available anywhere in the US, correct?

I saw the model with 8770m at Best Buy, but the store manager had no idea whether they will ever get the model with 8870m.

Mine was delivered on Saturday, got it from Notebooklieferant.de. I got the 770Z5E-S01DE model.
    Random thoughts:
    - Light and well built, doesn't flex or squeak anywhere
    - the screen is really bright and the viewing angles are a lot better than the ones on my old laptop (ASUS M70Vn)
    - I got about 8h of web browsing and listening to music out of the battery with the High Performance power profile - sure, it's not the 11 hours they promised, but it's still great. I'll check again over the next few days, I just swapped out the incredibly slow hard drive for a 512GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD.
    - Holy crap, is this thing hard to take apart! Don't even bother if you don't have a prying tool or at least a plastic card that you can sacrifice. The numerous plastic tabs and hooks can drive you mad. A small magnetized screw driver is also a good idea.
    - The fans sometimes make a bit of noise for a few seconds when booting, but other than that the laptop's very silent in regular use.
    - If you've already set everything up and want to upgrade to SSD, make sure you shrink the Windows partition before you start anything. I used Samsung's Recovery program (the one that was preinstalled) and it took 8 minutes to migrate everything with the Disk copy function. If your system partition is small enough and there's still place on the SSD, the program will migrate the Recovery system too.
    - Booting from external drives requires you to disable secure boot and, in some cases, Fast BIOS (the USB BluRay-writer didn't show up with it on)
    - Playing around with GParted messed up the recovery system and I needed to run Fix MBR from the Admin Tools stick.
    - The Intel WiFi was really slow in the beginning (7-8 Mbps), I had to reinstall the drivers to get it to perform correctly (80-85 Mbps)
    - Windows 8 is a pain in the until you get used to it, but programs like Start8 can make the transition a lot easier. Yes, the included Quick Start program has a start menu too, but it just isn't as good.

So if anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them :)

Yes, this is the one with the 8870m. I'm not much of a gamer, but I did load up Skyrim (graphics settings on high) and it ran smoothly. I will download 3DMark tomorrow and post my results.

Just search for "intel driver finder"
They have a page on their site
Let it run, and it'll give you a link to download new drivers for the 6235 card, it's all automatic

Hey Damouk, I`m getting exactly the same error. From what I`ve noticed, SW Update works best in the morning. Will try again then. By the way, I fixed the lid close crash by uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel drivers.

This way to release the products it's terrible, I wonder if Samsung will release series 8 in every country market or if they release ever and if they will release it when it will happen...
I search it Google and there are not info regard this new variant.

advertisements are completely identical in all aspects, dimension, weight, ports, etc. should be the same, but with the naming convention, why series 8? there must be something hidden about it?

heh, i never noticed until now the series 7 ultra moniker has been replaced with ATIV.

I've run a comprehensive test, using Tomb Raider 2013, tweaking the settings slightly throughout the test, to see if we can get HWInfo test that answers all the questions.

This was done on the NP780z5e S01UK, with 8870 GPU. Using the default drivers. The basic setting I used was high graphics (tried tweaking to Ultra, but it lagged a little). FWIW, the fan was spinning but not loudly/too much, the underside of the laptop doesn't really have any heat I'd say it's luke-warm.and the air blowing out of the hinge vent is also warm, but not hot!

View attachment Tomb Raider - High Settings.txt

I'm pretty certain this can deliver more with some driver updates.

That's the one - splash screen 10 minutes and counting before I gave up - same with this one (tried again, just in case they were different!). It's possible it can''t recognise the 8870 yet, so goes into self preservation mode!! :)

CPU always at 2.4GHz, CPU usage: in first part was under 40% alter it was under 30%.Max temp was 80°C, but for most the time was around 77°C.

It seems that you have played this game with Intel HD4000, in fact its clock was 1200MHz instead of 350MHz and there are no data about 8870m.

Smooth playing with Tomb Raider 2013 in high settings with HD4000? Isn't it possible that he started hwinfo first and it didn't monitor the 8870?

HD4000 was working @1200MHz instead of @350MHz, so this mean that he was playing with HD4000.

Which new notebook, Series 9 Ultrabook? They are light, thinner, have no dedicated GPU and weaker CPU for same price.
770Z5E is light enough for me, I'm no weakling who can't carry 2-3kg. I can eat that much at once and don't even feel it

mh, silver is better if you ask me. light colors make screens look bigger and you won't see scratches in pure aluminium but you will if it's painted black. light bleed could also have a bigger impact

Ok, after 2 samsung restores it's working again, not really sure why that happened.

I have to say, this computer's great, but the hard drive kills it. Anytime I try to do anything on it that uses the hard drive the computer slows down to a crawl, things start not responding, etc.

When I get it I'll put in my Momentus XT 750gb I guess. To anyone who thinks that replacing the HDD voids your warranty, Samsung says on the guide(page 112)
