Sorry but Tomb Riders is meaningless as for testing a PC.
Use games as STALKER: Call of Prypiat, Metro 2030 or even the original Crysis benchmark (is free on the internet). Any of those are very cheap on Steam

The speculated (?) 880Z5E does look much better in black, but it's a matter of taste I guess. I wouldn't understand though Samsung releasing a model under a totally different model number if it was only for the color. If they have different colors of a model, it's usually appended at the end of the model no.
I guess I have to keep waiting at least a month until it's clear what is what in Samsungs lineup. -
Alright, I'm definitely going with the black version if it's real! I've always wanted it to be black, I always envy the thinkpads and black macbooks.

Hey everyone,
I have purchased the 15.6 Chronos (780Z5E). I've had it for about 3 weeks now. I love it and I hate it at the same time. I have been trying to flush out any problem software and get things up to date as possible. The latest issue that I am having is currently with internet browsers not working correctly. Both Chrome and IE have been stalling when moving to the next page. I have cleared the cache and any other temp files that might have been a problem. I do this once, everything seems ok. But once I start to open up a few more pages, everything starts coming back to a halt. It's getting very frustrating trying to do simple tasks or look up vital information and I can't access it. If anyone might have any solutions it would be greatly appreciated.
And as in "stalling", if there has been pages where i need to enter data or log in with user name and info, it hangs up on me and I lose any information entered. I had to jump to a different computer so I could get my info entered correctly. The comp has been slowing down on my a bit, not much, but it is noticeable. If someone has info on what they have done to the comp to get things up and running smoothing that would be awesome as well.
Thanks again -
You could try to use a Google DNS Server.
Just override the auto detection in your network configuration for WLAN / LAN

Im really at the point of returning this thing after my experience with swapping the ssd. Can not get a single software thats able to clone the partitions including the recovery partition. As a result im stuck with a sysyem thay cant restore factory. From what I read acronis doesnt do this either.
Any last ideas? About to return the laptop and the ssd. Really dissapointed....

New problem: Textures broken in Skyrim. The logo when starting the game has graphic errors and roofs ingame have no textures.I really wish Samsung had used Nvidia GPUs - AMD is utter gargabe. Still no drivers on their site for HD8xxxx.
If you are a gamer, I would suggest to go with Nvidia notebooks. -
On another note, after months of waiting and waiting... if the black version IS real and WILL be released (relatively) soon, and it has the same specs as before, I'm holding out for it.
For me, black > silver (especially when it comes to the keyboard). -
I'm planning on getting it from amazon.de, but not committed yet. Other than the HDD issues, do you like it?

Noticed this on the Samsung US product page for the best buy version.

How To Repartition The Hard Drive from the Samsung product page for NP780Z5E. Very detailed information here under support/support overview.

For those who noticed that the results showed no demand early in the test, I paused the game for about 10-20 mins while I did something else. I thought I'd cut those all out of the file, but might have missed some. -

Samsung, I ordered the silver one 770z5e, and you publish next day the black one! Disappointed, I want it now black :-(

Looks like the black version is coming to Canada, the US, France and the UK
EPEAT
At the bottom it says that it is also registered in France, US and UK
Black kinda seems nice. There are so many silver laptops, plus if it's black the screen kinda blends in more. Idk, I think I might get it in Black. -

I'll just pretend I didn't see the black version.
Btw that page about the ativ book 8 has been up since the first weeks of this thread, like jako said. I just can't wait another 3 months. -
In black it has a certain look to my old Dell inspiron. Not very sexy.

1.Did you do anything special to make the disc bootable? Or just use the option to make it bootable in Samsung recovery.
2.What was your boot device priority? SSD first and then Usb stick or stick first?

I just found out that AMD released also Catalyst 13.2 Beta for Linux  Anyone willing to give it a try?
P.S.: keep checking this for Star Craft II test -

After looking at the latest leaks and info regarding the new Chronos 7 and AtivBook 8, here are my comments:
Chronos 7
- Will be Silver Aluminium Color, with White/light-Blue illuminated keyboard
- Three configurations all with 3rd Generation Intel i7
- All three will come with AMD 8870
- Two 15.6'' models: One with TouchScreen, one non-touch, both FullHD 1080p
- One 17.3'' model with non-touch FullHD 1080p and Slot-load Optical Drive
- They clarify that "Performance will vary depending on SSD configuration" so at this point I assume that at least one configuration will come with SSD right out of the box.
Ativ Book 8
- Will be Black Aluminium Color, with Pure White illuminated keyboard and identical design to Chronos 7
- Two configurations all with 3rd Generation Intel i7
- Both with 15.6'' Display and AMD 8870
- One with TouchScreen, one non-touch, both FullHD 1080p
- They clarify that "Performance will vary depending on SSD configuration" so at this point we assume that at least one configuration will come with SSD right out of the box.
Finally until Samsung give us farther information I am currently assume the following:
- The Ativ Book 5 will be a cheaper mainstream, mid-range 15.6 model with lower specs than the new Chronos 7
- The Chronos 7 will be Samsung's high-end laptop
- The Ativ Book 8, with only two configurations will be both High-end and Premium
Similar to what HP used to have with high-end Pavilions and their Envy used to be their high-end luxury/premium line. Now HP has moved the Envy line down to mainstream and Spectre line is their Premium product, but they are not high-end because they lack in specs and computing power.
Samsung is currently offering both serious high-end specs in a premium packages.
So far it looks really good. -

I also noticed that in SW Update, under All Software, there is a Windows 8 Critical Update which is marked as Installable. It doesn't show as an "update". Is this Samsung pushing out the same stuff as Windows Update or is there something different in there? -

Received my Amazon.de replacment already. This time it's close to perfect ! No damn dead pixels this time !
When I compare the old one to the new one, there is a build quality issue.
The metal part around the screen was rough and cut unclean on the top side, it's perfect on my replacement.
The new one has close to none light bleed except on one spot, where they both lack.
But you can reduce it by half if you heat up your room to 30°C and start a massage session.
Screen bleed comes by uneven glue and pressure it applies.
Made a picture for you, so you can see screen bleed. This is 100% brightness.
The camera catched up all non-perfect background lighting and looks very bad on picture but isn't noticable in reality in a completly dark room, yout can't even see the stuff behind it. The small visible light bleed is a bit under the top right corner. As I said, i reduced it by half with a massage, thanks to aluminium parts which can be bent and stay that way
Time to put in my 840 pro SSD !

okey, theres a thing about the trackpad that Im curious about.
Does it feel like the trackpad on the series 9, i.e smooth, and I guess you can say metallish.
Or does it compare more to the old chronos 7 trackpad, with a rough plastic feeling? -
I brought this laptop for many reasons, but a functional dedicated higher end gpu topped the list. I've been beyond frustrated with the lack of support and/or acknowledgment of the issue from Samsung.
Anyone whose switched data, programs, etc. from one laptop to another knows the thought of pulling it all back and moving to another is no fun.
I'm nearing the end of my best buy return period. Can any of the pros here give me any confidence that the hd 8770m will be a decent functioning card once the driver snafu is corrected? This would be very helpful to know. Thank you! -
CPU 7.8
RAM 7.8
Graphics 6.9
Gaming Graphics 6.9
Disk 8.1 (Samsung 840 Pro SSD)
But it's not using the 8870 GPU for this test - it's identical with forced power saving, so never hits the power of the 8870, which makes me think the real subset score is more like 7.8 for this machine. -
FYI... After I installed all the updates including the windows critical updates, I began having a problem with my wif-fi, which beforehand was working perfectly. The wi-fi was disconnecting periodically and when I ran the troubleshooter it had to reset my default gateway because it was -not found! I finally figured out that it had check marked my network wireless adaptor to shut off to save power, so I had to uncheck it in the power management tab.
Updates can be buggy with this computer. The intel driver update I received last weekend caused the monitor and backlight to stick. I had to shut the auto adjust off and then back on and then it worked fine again. -
Thank you! -
I didn't change my boot priority... I just turned off fast boot and secure boot then booted into BIOS again and selected my boot device from those listed on the boot menu. I'm not sure if you definitely have to turn off fast boot (more likely) and secure boot (kinda likely) but did it anyway so there was as little nonsense going on at startup as possible. -

So, SSD is installed on my 770Z5E-S01DE. Here is a small how-to:
Prepare: boot into Samsung recovery, hit F4 on Samsung Logo - it takes a while to load. Then export the recovery image on a stick, should be 16GB. Don't export the Windows backup image (23GB+), there are two options !
1. Unscrew the bottom first
2. Use your nails to open a corner on the bottom right (front, where the stickers are)
3. Use a soft credit card, should be softer than the laptop plastic bottom to not damage anything
4. Move it straight forward, rest pops up
5. Around ports use your nails
6. Push the plastic backwards and twist it a bit, then use nails to get off the back where the screen is - this is the hardest part.
7. Unscrew and replace with SSD. Check ALL screws, there was one which jumped out from my mainboard on delivery and hung in that grey tape stuff - glad I opened it up !
Installing a fresh Windows Version, not from Samsung recovery! I used "Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool" to create an bootable Windows image. Used a external HDD for that. Then do :
1. Boot into BIOS, press F2 on Samsung Logo
2. Go to "advanced", disable "Fast Bios Mode"
3. Go to "boot" -> "secure boot", and disable it. On OS Mode Selection choose "CSM and UEFI OS"
4. Now it should find your bootable Windows device
5. Install Windows as usual
6. Change back fast boot to enable, leave secure boot as it is. With fast boot on it only finds the SSD but no external drives.
7. Go online and it activiates the key without doing anything
8. Update windows, download SW update from Samsung site and install what you need to. This includes all drivers you need ! Bios update, chipset, AMD etc.
It's a rocket now ! HDD was sooooooo slow. Should be ok to install linux now, since secure boot garbage is gone.
Pic of the inside:
PS: HDD weighs 104g, SSD 53g -

In case anyone is wandering... I did try these drivers but the AMD part is where the process fell down. Can't wait for AMD to support their own chip! -
Hello!
I have just relocated to the UK and I was hoping to be able to pick up the 8870 model at Currys/PC World, but now it looks to be sold out for delivery and pickup! Are there any other retailers in the UK selling this model?
Thanks! -
But like other black laptops (had the Lenovo Y500 & HP DV7 7020) the brushed black aluminium is a finger print magnet.
The HP was easy to clean every two days but the Lenovo....damn. wont get clean.
I hope Samsung will use better material. -
Are we sure these ATIV 8's are the same as the Chronos 7's just a different colour?

Anyone getting a "Update Failed(-10)" error when they try to update the wireless driver using SW update? -
Anyone who wants to order from fnac (france), (miri?): my np770Z5E has just shipped. It'll take 3-5 days to get here
