yep, uninstall everything wifi related by windows program manager. reboot, reinstall.
having one problem left: closing the lid and reopen reboots and windows gives me an error.

Next weekend I'll have plenty of time to test my np770Z5E thoroughly. If you want my to test something, let me know.
About the ativ book 8. It has been a long time ago been on fishingtree like said before. The weird thing is that only fishingtree features it while the series 7 chronos was all over the internet at that time. -
it has the model number 870Z5E and 880Z5E -
-
now this piece of garbage win8 trys to auto repair something and got stuck into infinite repair loop !
there is no problem at all, just few reboots. but it won't let me get past of auto repair -it starts over and over again and fails to fix "problems" every time.
there is no option to skip it !! ms fails so hard...
time to manually disable it with bcedit ! i hate automated code from noobs... -
I know that most of you who have this machine, got it from BestBuy in the US, but when is this going to be available in Canada ?
Does anyone have an idea - or any estimate ? -
Any English or German people that got the 770Z5E-UK/DE could give a feedback about the beast ? Obviously looking to get a feeling about the 8870M ! Any benchmark, gaming etc are welcome.

For anyone in the UK who's after this laptop - the PCWorld and Curry's websites are currently down - but if you visit a couple of times, you get the option to register for an online discount - with any luck, that'll be a % off voucher meaning you can order this laptop for extra money off - for the sake of entering your e-mail address, it seems worth taking a chance to me!

So they changed their mind about Chronos and now they are calling this laptop the "ATIV Book8"?
Samsung's branding strategy is really confusing. -
And it worked. Used Samsung Recovery to clone the drive to the SSD. Now I have a working boot/recovery partition. This thing just flies with the 840 pro.

This is how the Bluray drive sound...is this normal? Any with one and does it sound similar? Kinda loud...Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -

I ran 3DMark 11 in "performance" mode with the graphics card set on "maximize performance" and it says:
Code:P3314 with Intel HD Graphics 4000 Mobile(1x) and Intel Core i7-3635QM Graphics Score 2998 Physics Score 7229 Combined Score 3250

Anyone try putting a momentus XT in it?
My guess is that it's be pretty fast with it, but first hand experience would be great -
I'm guessing there is still no info about the 8870m version in the USA. :'(
-
My guess it it'll start surfacing soon, black version as well as silver -
And it looks like turning on "Silent Mode" in the "Settings" app to minimize fan noise throttles the CPU. I turned off Silent Mode and CPU score jumped from 6.2 to 7.8 and RAM from 7.4 to 7.8. Both graphics scores and the disk score stayed the same (6.7/6.7/8.1). I am pleased to see my Crucial M4 getting the same number as the pricier 840 Plus -

What worked best for many, and for me thusfar (1 day), is simply uninstalling Samsung Support (not, I repeat not, SW update).
Looked like pretty sad bloat anyway, and would explain why we haven't seen other posts (folks taking the trash out first thing).
I also had problems with jumping tabs when touching the screen. Stupid annoying, but also gone now. Can't say why this would work, but reboots and cache cleaning didn't work.
It left me with new questions related to such problems:
WhereTF is windows update? I suppose I went through SWupdate at first, but now I see posts like @Stow, and for myself, that there is "INSTALLABLE" windows updates (a significant 500MB).
I've installed MSO2010, and thought it updated itself, which may explain it.
Nope, manually updating from MSO2010, takes me to an MS site that says, "use Windows Update from the Start Screen" haha.
Is it the MS update service itself (missing from the startpage), or something more? Using the good ole update from the company that made the OS; Tools menu, in IE, I have only around ~70MB of updating to do, very little MSO.
It seems that SWupdate is constipated...
I'll search posts again , but Samsung also seems coy about posting change logs following updates, and they don't seem super concerned about software or service, so I won't trust them. -

Would really like an opinion on my Slot loaded Bluray drive, does that sound normal. Anyone with a 17" do check yours, maybe some are defective?
-
Samsung Logo etc. slowed boot time down. Now it's ~4-5 seconds when powered on and 1-2 sec from sleep.
And before I forget, fast boot MUST be enabled, else SW Update won't find your notebook and deny driver access ! -
Terrible suspect about graininess...
Maybe it is due to the subpixel matrix, the cheaper pentile in place of full rgb as Samsung uses to do with its phones?
It's strange that this high ppi panel is grainy.
You guys with fullhd panel, can you check it with a magnifier? -
no, it's the coating. you can clearly see it on colors like "lime green" etc.
all ips monitors have this too, like my eizo for 800€ and other top dell models.
dunno what panel this one has but it could be ips. angles are very good, you can't put yourself in a position to see color fading if your in front of it. -

Probably monday I'll receive mine 770Z5E-s01it, can't wait!

Windows reinstall fixed my graphic issues with Skyrim !
It's running with 35+ FPS on very high with 2x AA and 4xAF in Whiterun (city) @1920x1080.
Sleep mode is fixed too. Windows update installs HD4000 drivers which won't work properly. Remove them and install those from SW update. BUT DONT let your Notebook crash too often, Windows will enter an infinite auto repair loop you can't get out - command prompt edit or reinstall will greet you then! There are reasons why automated software sux ! -
I have to chime in with what the others have reported:
- excellent build quality, very nice feel; the plastic bottom is a no-issue for me and all those who don't prefer to have their laptops upside down
- keyboard takes some getting used to, but then it is fine
- very silent
- battery: between 7 and 8 hours of doing light stuff, like typing and surfing.
I have not encountered any problems with the WiFi yet, but can't comment on speed beause the connection is quite slow anyway.
As for the screen, I am not bothered at all by the so-called graininess. To be honest, I don't even notice it. I am coming from an xps1640, which is said (as far as I know) to have an excellent screen. Placing the two side by side, I could't say that the xps has a better one. I'd probably go with the Samsung, I appreciate the matte screen and consequent absence of reflections. Colours, contrast and viewing angles are excellent, too, as far as I am concerned.
One thing where my old machine scores is maximum brightness and volume. Whereas both machines have good, crisp and clear sound for laptops, the xps's speakers can be turned twice as loud. Or am I doing something wrong here on the Chronos?
I have experienced severe lagging, too, like black83 did. Part of last night was spent downloading and installing updates, both Windows and Samsung. This has improved things a lot for the moment, I don't notice this laggy behaviour any more. What I did notice was that the harddrive was busying itself for no obvious reason.
Now my questions:
1. How can I find out if the harddrive is indeed defective, als black83 suggested? I am not too worried about lack of speed, since I plan to swap it with Crucial's TB-SSD as soon as it's out, but I don't want to have a broken harddisk even as my future external backup option.
2. What pre-installed software can or even should I delete? I am No_Expert, you see...Therefore I am rather cautious with randomly deleting programs... I do suspect that IntelliMemory stuff does more bad than good, however. It eats up a lot of RAM, so could it be that the harddrive is needed to cache things that would normally to into RAM? Would be the most counterproductive thing I have heard of. Anyway, what programs can I remove without the fear of regret?
Alright, if I am to comment on anything specifically, let me know. Apart from that I'd really appreciate any advice on the above issues.
P.S.: Just noticed that I had missed a couple of letter. So the keyboard does need some time getting used to... -
I don't really understand why anyone are using AMD catalyst beta driver.
It's just out new catalyst 13.3 beta:

List of improvements are in download page.

I suggest you wipe the whole Windows install. Make a bootable Stick with Windows, format C:\ and leave the repair partition.
Samsung installed a lot of trash, norton, win8 apps...dunno what else. Best is to wipe it.
Then use SW update from Samsung and reinstall everything. I installed all what it offers except IntelliMemory (for HDDs) and AllShare.
Everything works, all FN+button functions. -

It won't install anything, checkbox is checked and marked as "up2date".
-
Does anyone know if the 17" version has a touch screen? I've seen a review and they didn't mention it so I'm thinking not.
-
Turn off adaptive brightness. No way your xps is brighter than this laptop.

ATIV Book 8 is basically the Samsung Series 7 Chronos presented at CES 2013, so a premium notebook, slim, stylish and well finished, but with a hardware equipment devoted to performance rather than to save energy .
