Did you mean the Series 7, instead of series 9? None of the series 9's have a touch screen. And gaming is a no-go since they don't have a discrete graphics card. Not to mention the Series 9 is wayyyy overpriced
-
I used the computer extensively for 3 weeks, running all manner of benchmarks and using my apps on it to run it through its paces. Including and at-idle battery test where I had it sitting on the same screen in desktop for hours with battery mon running. I never experienced anything like the ghosting effect you are seeing.
Now, I did notice one thing... if you are in the live-tile interface and you are using one of the dark blue / dark gray background themes... if you look to the left of the first set of icons you can see a darker line extending out from that icon to the left edge of the screen. I tried that on several 'in-store' machines and they all did it so I chalked it up to a quirk of that screen, it didnt do it on any other color combination or situation. -
To all those having issues with the Wireless card after sleep/hibernation:
Remove the Inter Driver v. 15.6.1 and install 15.6, which you can find on Intel's support site. I haven't had a single issue since. -
Jop, I've also owned the Transformer Prime for about 6 months, but its screen was much smaller and in my opinion Android not good usable without touch.

Yeah, it's smaller, but same concept about angles. Some would argue that Win8 isn't really fully usable without touch either, but fair enough. To each his own I guess!

I have seen this advertised for sale in uk the 770Z7E-S03DE could some tell me more about this model please. I have read most of this forum but am now getting impatient as i think this could be the laptop for me. This will be my first laptop and will be a desktop re-placement for me replaceing my ageing PC. One of the deal breakers for me though is there doesnt seem to be HDD with this and i need a lot of storage as I do like playing games some of them take lots of space on my drive. Could you give me some ideas on how to get around this please.
Regards
Wayne -
If I am not mistaken, the S03 DE indicates that this is the German version of the laptop, I would double-check the keyboard layout before buying this model.
I assume you mean that this model comes with a SSD and you need more space. Most people on this forum talk about changing out the slow HDD for a SSD, but I guess you could reverse the process by following one of the "Swap out HDD for SSD guides" posted previously in this thread. Another (and cheaper) option would be to wait for one of the versions with a regular HDD.
Edit: According to this link: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Samsung-Series-7-Chronos-770Z7E-Notebook.89376.0.html the 770Z7E-S01DE comes with a 1 TB (Slow) HDD. Again, this is probably with a German keyboard layout. -
Thanks for that information andrea have sent them an email and am waiting for an answer. This latpop seems to have a few models the ones for sale in pcworld and curry's seem to be the 15' inch versions with different processors. would really like a 17' laptop and with £1300 quid budget is there a better laptop out there at the moment
-
John Lewis have got the non-touch version in stock. Apparently not many available, and the link on the email I received does not work.
"Thank you for your recent interest in Samsung NP770Z5E-S01 Laptop, Intel Core i7, 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB, 15.6", Metal. We're pleased to inform you that this item is back in stock." -
" would really like a 17' laptop and with £1300 quid budget is there a better laptop out there at the moment". That totally depends on what you want from a laptop. If weight and battery life isn't a big priority then something like the Eurocom Neptune 2.0 ( Eurocom Corporation - Number 1 in Desktop Replacement Notebook Technology) might be more to your liking, because you can get a more powerful GFX (just remember to take the Kepler versions). The Samsung is interesting because it packs quite a lot of power (not as much as the Eurocom though IF you chose a better GFX) in a small light package with a lot of batterylife.
-
Just been on to the John Lewis site and can not find this laptop. also really would like 17' version but can't seem to find it anywhere for sale in UK. All help will be very appreciated even to the point of suggesting another laptop which is available for me to get in the UK -
-
is there a good way to cool this beast down (without pouring liquid nitrogen on it) so it doesnt hit throttling-temerature?
could a regular laptop cooler be at any help or is it just gonna be a waste? -
Put it on a sheet of ice

I see you guys beat me to it. I received a number of emails as well and as mentioned above when trying to open the link the page does not exist. As it is a https link and port defined as 80 try to change to 443. It goes through to john lewis site but still no product.
I've been on the np770z5e product display page on their site before to register my interest just like you guys. presume we'll have to keep checking but I would probably prefer the touch version anyway. -
Of course it will help: used some for my Dell for 2 years and cooled it down by about 20 degrees. But I think / hope a BIOS-Update will stop GPU from throtteling but throttle not used CPU-power instead.

Am still waiting on information about the chronos I have seen for sale in UK about the keyboard, in the meantime though have been looking on amazon for another option and came up with this..MSI GT70 0ND-1021 for sale at £1260..all input into this would be greatly appreciated
-
I'm setting up my np770Z5E for the first time.
It's gourgeous! It just screams class. And I got a free copy of far cry 3 with it too! -

Probably not the right thread for this but:
As I wrote you should probably check out Eurocom Corporation - Number 1 in Desktop Replacement Notebook Technology, the Neptune 2.0, or something like that. I think it is a Clevo based notebook, which I read is a good desktop replacement and you can configure them pretty much as you want. I think a saw a list of Clevo resellers somewhere in this forum, a search would reveal that, and a reseller in the UK.
The MSI GT70 0ND is using the GTX 675M which is based on the "old" Nvidia Fermi architecture. In that price range you would be looking at the GTX 670MX or the GTX 675MX which is based on the new Kepler architecture (indicated by the X in the end). How much difference it makes in real-world performance, heat and battery life, I don't know. If you have questions about which laptop you should pick, maybe this is the right thread for that:

Yea that's one of the places i am seeing it is on the tile/apps screen. My desktop shortcuts show through. Its not a glaring obvious burn in, more of a ghosting that lasts for a few minutes. But it does persist through a reboot and becomes very visible on the unlock screen during boot up. If this is simply a quick with the screen that only occurs with the gray background i can likely live with it as every other bit of the laptop (even only having a 8770) is top notch. I shall likely try one more exchange to see if I can completely remove the issue, or at least make it so small I rarely notice it, posibly by making the background darker. This second one is definitely less noticeable then the first.
-
Is the ghosting issue only happening with the touch version, or both versions?
-
Ummmm no thanks. That laptop is one of the ugliest pieces of cheap plastic I've ever seen. Talk about thick, too. Why would I ever get that POS when I can get this beautiful Chronos?
-
The person asking for alternatives just wanted a desktop replacement, size/design wasn't a requirement.
-
As Troy already pointed out, this advice was specific to a person wanting and asking for alternatives now and posting a MSI laptop, and not meant for the general audience of this thread
. That is why I wrote that it was probably the wrong thread to ask these questions

Has anyone played latest tomb raider and bioshock on the chronos? If so is it playable with high settings? Thanks
-
Tomb Raider is benchmarked here: AMD Radeon HD 8870M - NotebookCheck.net Tech

This is presumably the 8870m version of the chronos.

I'm about to play some far cry3. Tell me what settings you'd like to see tested.
Afterwards I'll play crysis 2, skyrim, battlefield 3, saint's row the third.
Tell me what settings you want to see in those games too. -
Hi,
I just made a clean Windows 7 install and I can't find what network adapter drivers I need to install ? -
any chance you feel like recording any of those on youtube, for us impatient and bored at work crew?
-
Thanks for the links.
Man the quality is brilliant. Underestimated this graphics card or it's the side effects of using a 5/6 year old dell laptop haha. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these laptops. -
I do prefer aiming with a mouse than the controller sticks. Got a 360 controller for laptop nonetheless. Anyone played it using keyboard?
-
I've seen a couple of posts from people saying they are in Canada. I just found this link with someone claiming to have a 8870m based chronos for sale second hand in Ontario -http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-computers-Samsung-Series-7-Chronos-Core-i7-3635QM-Processor-2-4GHz-8GB-R-W0QQAdIdZ467098144.
-
The performance in most games is close to the 650M and even gets beaten in some.
-
Old drivers. Expect those scores to be irrelevant once AMD releases official driver support.
-
and when (if?) Samsung ever decides to update their drivers.
-
Battery life is a problem for me. Have my bios settings so it only charges to 80%. I thought there was a problem with my battery so I used the bios feature to drain the battery to get it to recalibrate.
Starting at 79% of battery, It reported only 2 hours and 40 minutes of life towards the beginning of the conversation. After being on Skype for 107 minutes, my battery was down to 22% and showed only 44 minutes remaining. That only translates to about 3 hours of battery time.
Far from 10-11 hours. What are others experiences with battery life. -
Not Samsung, AMD.
-
Just been browsing through notebook checks benchmark comparisions and found not one game that I'm interested in (BF3, Crysis 3, Far Cry 3) where the 8870m scored higher than the 660m.
Little concerned. I was under the impression this card was between the 660m and 670m. Not sure what evidence suggests that updated drivers will increase this performance to overtake that card. I am hoping this is the case though.
Does anyone have evidence of something like this before? A previous thread for another AMD GPU machine where drivers later upped all the game benchmarks 5-10%?
Either way I'm buying the machine, just want to know whats going on!!
Also Looking forward to hearing Pranktanks benchmarks. 1080P Medium texture framerate results, high texture framerate results, AA off. For all games pleeeease!!
Also how hot does it get? Uncomfortable? Too hot for the machines good? -

I believe that it's a joint effort. AMD have to provide the core driver and then Samsung add the wrapper to ensure it works properly with the Samsung hardware.
John -
My battery is pretty good.
The 10-11 hours would be with wlan off and brightness set to the lowest setting, and doing things such as processing word documents.
Alchemist did a video test where he streamed from Netflix and got around 6 and a half hours, but that was with half brightness.
I would think that Skype uses more battery than Netflix, as it is both downloading as we'll as uploading video, plus having to supply power to the camera and mic.
What brightness were you at? -
correct, its this way with mosdt switchable driver PCs. unfortunately, this delays the drivers SIGNIFICANTLY. or Samsung will probably skip a few AMD drivers with each of their releases.
-
Does screen brightness really impact battery life that much? I keep my brightness on the high side, 80 or 90 percent on the slider.
-
Yea it does.
Try setting the brightness to lower. Not sure of exact numbers but having it at 80 opposed to 50 definitely shaves off a few hours, if not more -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Backlight power makes a big difference now the rest of the system os pmore power efficient. You can do your own test by running on battery then watching the power drain using HWiNFO or similar but this is what I measured by my Samsung NP900X4C (15.0" display).
If the rest of the system uses, say 7W, then 1W for display backlight = 8W while 5.5W for display backlight = 12.5W. This represents a 50% increase in power consumption or a reduction in run time from 11hr (low brightness) to 7 hours (maximum brightness). Numbers for illustration only but in the right range.

Got some questions about this 2013 Samsung Series 7 Chronos 15.6" 8870m (US)...
1) When is the US version of the Series 7 with the 8870m to be released, if at all?
2) What is the model # to be for the US 15.5" w 8870m
*3) Will it be possible to swap out the Samsung Series 7 wifi N NIC with a wifi AC NIC, when available?
or TriBand N/AC/AD (WiGig) when available?
---> Do NOT want to buy a laptop with just wifi N and be stuck with when the new IEEE standards are final and are status quo for next 5-8 years!
*4) What expansion bays, unused connections/ports are there on this specific Samsung Series 7 Chronos???
*5) Is the Hard Drive USER SERVICEABLE (swap with an SSD) WITHOUT VOIDING WARRANTY?
--> Thought Owners manual on Samsung said, NON USER SERVICEABLE....
*6) Is the max upgradeable RAM ONLY 12GB???
--> 4GB Soldiered, right? So can only add 8GB total of 12GB
**7) The 15.6" Touch, IS IT, in fact PLS Panel?
Saw someone say it was not, maybe they were talking about 17"???
Thanks Guys and Gals!
