    1. its totally quiet, if u use silent mode and swapped the HDD. The most noisy thing in this machine in the HDD when u use silent mode and do normal Office/surfing/browsing. Once u swapped the HDD into a SSD the machine is completely passive. Even with more youtube streaming the fans are so quiet, that u need to place your ear on the keyboard to hear a bit of a fannoise! In gaming, of course you hear the fans, but its not annoying neither it sounds like a jet or anything.
    2. Screen is an MVA Display, so kinda compareable to PLS/IPS! Beautiful contrast (around 1000:1) and good reactiontime and a viewing angle ~180°
    3. I can´t tell you anything about the availability in Canada.

    P.S.: I am treally fussy when it comes to loudness and this machine is not compareable to anything i have experienced so far! So trust me its really awesome!

    In Germany 770z5e-s01 and s02 both have the 8870m. Only Feature of S02 seems to be Win Pro and Data encryption

    Nope, There are not definitive code name about GPU variant.
    Most likely S01UB means USA Bestbuy Edition with 8770m, so maybe S01US is the standard version with 8870m

    Hey everyone,

    I just bought this laptop yesterday but I am having a problem with the track pad. Honestly, this is the first time I have used this sort of track pad on a laptop (gestures, etc...), however the trackpad activity seems off...

    Does anybody else's cursor not move at all sometimes when you are pressing on the track pad? This happens to me once every couple of minutes, but it is really annoying... It just stays in the same place while im swiping my finger across the pad. I also have speed issues where I will swipe fast on the track pad and the cursor will move slowly across the screen.

    Anyone else have these issues? I have updated the driver from sw update.

    According to this, the model number for the touch version with 8870 should be NP780Z5E-S01, but as you can see at this link, that is not true. That model number only has the 8770: Samsung 15.6" TouchScreen Laptop 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive NP780Z5E-S01UB - Best Buy

    Never had an issue with the trackpad. Make sure you're not resting your hand anywhere on the trackpad...it's deceptively large, and quite responsive.

    S01UB is a weird model that breaks the rule, but I think we are mostly in agreement that the S01 and S02 do not necessarily govern what graphics card goes into the notebook.

    Ok so :
    NP770Z7E --> 17" No Touch Silver (Serie 7 Chronos)
    NP770Z5E --> 15" No Touch Silver (Serie 7 Chronos)
    NP780Z5E --> 15" Touch Silver (Serie 7 Chronos)
    NP870Z5E --> 15" No Touch Black (ATIV Book 8)
    NP880Z5E --> 15" Touch Black (ATIV Book 8)

    And someting like :
    - S01 --> HD8870M
    - S02 --> HD8770M

    Untrue, not about the GPU

    Then UK, IT, FR ... (country) or UB for USA Best-Buy model (weird one)

    Maybe a function like "Fn+F5" to ON/OFF the trackPad ?

    I'm sure i'm not resting my hand on it, it just freezes for no apparent reason for a split second, sometimes for 2-3 seconds then gets back in motion.

    Also, can I ask, did the booklets that came with the laptop come in a plastic bag? I also received a screen wipe in the bag with the warranty and booklets, however all the unboxing videos I have seen on youtube show the manuals, etc come in a white box.

    thanks

    The first shipments came with the white box with no screen wipe.
    The later shipments came with the manuals in a plastic bag along with screen wipe.

    FYI, Samsung support told me that Samsung doesnt create any laptops with a touchscreen and that I should buy an all in one PC or a tablet.

    Conclusion, Samsung Support is useless.

    Someone should teach Samsung proper marketing.
    Most people don't even know this device exists.

    First they should start with proper spec info on their website, release dates and proper model numbering.
    Sad thing is this is the best notebook out there using windows. Way better than Zenbook.

    Is the 780z5e (touch screen) thicker than the 770z5e (no touch screen)? Also, what would be the difference in battery life between the two?

    I haven't used Windows 8, and I'm trying to decide if a touch screen is worth it or not.

    I think Samsung stated that the non-touch screen version could give you 1 hour more of battery around 10-11. Nonetheless I have found the touchscreen quite useful to navigate big files in programs like excel and word and it gives a small plus to the navigation of Windows 8 with some apps. So the touch sceen form me is worth.

    I think I posted the results, but can add to it again here.
    The Dell U2713HM was driven fine by DVI-D dual, at 60Hz, 2560x1440, 32bit color by my old T61p thinkpad running through a dock.
    I tried two HDMI/DVI-d Dual cables from the Samsung to the Dell DVI port, and couldn't get it.
    It's possible that the f*ing HDMI/DVI cables aren't fast enough, but I think they are. Need Category 2, high speed, 1.3a... I think "ethernet" or ARC for audio return channel, written on the cable, implies 1.4, but it's not entirely clear to me. Also, tried again with another new HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the dell. Got the same result. This was tested with the Samsung plugged in, high performance settings, and with updated drivers

    Using the Intel Control Panel. Custom settings, enter in 2560x1440, 40hz, and CVT-RB, and that's as fast as I could get, either HDMI/HDMI or HDMI/DVI-d

    Anything over 40, and the Intel CP would report " the custom resolution exceeds the max bandwidth capacity", which I figured indicated the Samsung as the bottleneck.
    But 1.3a standard iss sufficient, and this laptop model has that, or 1.4, so should be fine. I know others have uninstalled, reinstalled the Intel drivers to fix the lid closing problem, so maybe I'll try that.
    Intel Driver 9.17.10 2875
    I don't know forcing the monitor to be driven by the 8700 would help (can I do that via the ATI Catalyst software?), but the HD4000 should be able to push this with ease.

    Sometimes too the monitor itself would report "the current input timing is not supported by the monitor display. Please change your input timing to 1920x1080@60hz or any other monitor listed timing as per the monitor specifications. ". So, it might be Dell just doesn't like HDMI coming in to either HDMI or DVI-d. The U2711 had a problem with HDMI that could be improved by using a custom EDID script, so perhaps that's true here too.

    Since I can't test the cables with my setup, it's possible I still don't have the right ones, but pretty sure I do.
    Also, as the Samsung HDMI is pushing the 2560x1440 at 40 Hz, I don't see why it wouldn't push at 60hz ( there is no standards jump at that bandwidth, I don't think).
    I think Dell just doesn't like HDMI.

    The image quality is amazing, and 2560 movies I've played look great. The Dell U2713HM has a slight judder issues anyway, so any difference at 30 or 40hz vs 60, I probably couldn't tell.

    I decided I was happy enough, but of course would like to know why a new Dell Ultrasharp can't accept high speed HDMI, and/or why a new Samsung laptop has a VGA out, but no DP or DVI.

    Hi,

    So I am planning to buy this notebook, but as it is not available in my country I will probably buy it from notebook.de. I am kind of worried about sending them 1200€ in advance, have any of you ever bought something from them? Or do someone know them? Can I trust them?

    Thanks

    Thanks for testing and for (re)posting your results. Tried to rep you, but the site won't let me. 2560x1440 @ 40hz isn't so bad, and I can live with that.

    I'm tempted to get the 17" just because it has DisplayPort. It's absurd that a flagship 15" notebook doesn't have it.

    Totally agree. I'd take the advantage of having a touchscreen and pay an extra 100 euros or so, but, especially for a laptop that you might have to use in various light conditions, matte screen with no touch beats a glossy touchscreen (imho).

    I've been watching their site for many years (it's an easy way to check the Samsung Germany product range) although I've never bought anything from them. I would work on the principle that if they have survived for some years then they must provide a good service.

    I didn't even think about the touch screen being glossy! Just went to Best Buy yesterday to look at laptops and Samsung's 17 inch series 7 matte screen was one of the best screens out of any laptops there. The series 5 matte screen was washed out though, I'm assuming it has a cheaper screen.

    I have the touch version and I find I switch easily between Mouse, Touchpad, Keyboard and Touchscreen - have to say, now I've got it, I'd struggle to live without it. Lost count of the times I've tried to swipe or zoom on the screen on my work laptop which doesn't have it! It's worth the extra cost - in my opinion!

    Doesn't that put fingerprints on your display? Do you have to keep wiping it down?

    Personally, I'd prefer a non-touch glossy display, but if the only glossy option is touchscreen, I'll probably end up buying this one and rarely using the touchscreen. If the display had a hinge, I could see flipping it over and using it with a stylus for photoshop or writing notes, but the angle of a laptop display doesn't seem conducive to using a touchscreen.

    Any news on when the Series 7 Chronos (aka "Ativ Book 8") with 8870m and 1080p display will finally be available in the US?

    You do get the odd fingerprint, but believe it or not, when the screen is on you can't see them, it's only when it goes off that you can see them (just like an iPad really!). I also keep a handy lint-free (glasses type) cloth with the laptop (fits nicely on the slightly recessed touchpad when the laptop is closed) and give it a quick wipe every few days.

    Once you have a touchscreen laptop, it's amazing how you can't live without it!

    Several years ago, I used to have an hp tm2, and although it was much bulkier than today's ubiquitous pads and ultrabooks, you could flip the display around and use it like a tablet.

    I used the touch feature quite a bit taking notes with the stylus and reading fullscreen .pdf files, etc. However, it was always rather awkward trying to use these features while the display panel was up in the laptop position. Of course, Windows Vista was not very conducive to touch, either, but the main problem seemed to be the angle. How can you write or draw on a screen which is sitting vertically at 90 or 110 degrees?

    Jop, already found them. But not too useful since settings are not mentioned in video description.

    But it has to be the Chronos (15 or 17 inch), because those are the only Notebooks with 8870m out yet.

    I've got a Asus Transformer Prime with the keyboard dock. I use the touchscreen all the time when it's in the same position as a laptop screen (90deg). It's super helpful to have multiple input options.

    Been away from the laptop world for a while (posting this after many years..lol).

    Without starting another thread, decided to piggyback this.

    I'm about to replace my trusty Asus N71 laptop with the Sammy Series 9. Mainly cos of mobility and decent battery life and of course, Win8 touch screen. Gaming needs are somewhat average since I moved to console gaming years ago (and love it..minus the GFX factor).

    I'm just brooding on these thoughts..
    i) Get the toned down BestBuy version (live with lower GFX and no user-ugradeable HDD) ...though within my budget
    ii) Wait out the 'real' Chronos (rumored to be released in US sometime next month)? Not sure of price which will my the final deciding factor. Will BB discount the current version immediately?

    Food for thought.

    Cool... yeah, but they include a VGA?!?... weird how Samsung hamstrung the machine's ability to interface with other devices.
    The problem appears to be that the EDID file from Dell has an HDMI and Digital. the HDMI file limits to 1920, the Digital file looks fine.
    So, I think even going into the DVI port on the monitor, the Dell still sees it as HDMI, somehow, and dumbs down accordingly. If that's true, only a modification of the EDID file will fix it.
    But, I just read some random comment that the HD4000 can't provide the full native resolution for the Dell (2560x1440@60Hz). That doesn't make much sense, but sometimes though capable, it's not enabled.

    Search for a program called EDID manager, or EDID monitor; either will read your EDID file from the registry. Pretty handy.

    With 3 monitors; internal, the Dell at 2560 by HDMI, and another 19" with VGA (mostly for palettes, text, etc) and the Samsung performs without a hiccup so far (non-gaming).

    As much as I would like to wait for the model announced at ces with 16gb of RAM... I'm growing impatient. To upgrade the Best Buy model... I believe that 4 gigs are non removable. Would it make anything run off if there were a larger chip like a 8 or 16 added to the 4?

    To be honest, the HD in the chronos should be considered user upgradable. Its actually not that hard to take the case apart once you know the trick. I've don it at least three times now. Basically just undo the screws then pry the case apart in the front with a credit card and slide the card down the case popping the clicks as it goes. Even the non best buy versions will have HDs unless you go for top of the line.

    Best buy has already discounted it, in a way. Originally it went on sale for $1299 with $100 discount to $1199. Now its regular price is $1199 so they cut it down $100. What they do in the future depends on the pricing of the non-best buy units when they see the light of day.

    Regarding the hdd replacing with ssd, are there tangible advantages in a clean install over a recovery on ssd? I've read about some malfunction after a clear an install, but is it worthy, not only in theory?

    I tend to be a purist, and doing a clean install almost always ends up with a cleaner system. That said, samsung has alot of specific features on the chronos like silent mode, so in its case I preferred using the factory restore then taking off the bloatware, norton trial and what not. There isn't a huge amount of bloat so it doesn't take lone and that way you are sure to keep your recovery partition working well, silent mode, and whatever else samsung has going on under the hood.

    So after exchanging my first BB model due to the temporary screen burn in issue, i am seeing the same issue with the second model. I am now questioning if the panels on these laptops are simply prone to this issue and its something we are expected to live with. If a few people with them could please test if they are also experiencing the issue i would be most appreciative. To do so, just leave a light colored window open on the screen for 30+ minutes and then switch to the metro interface with an grayish background or restart the computer with the grayish backgroud to see it full screen. This is the easiest way i can explain what i am experiencing. Even my desktop icons are staying after switching screens.
