My guess is that AMD is struggling to deliver enough chips that meet the 8870m requirements. The other GPUs will be the same chip running at lower speed and/or some parts disabled. This is a common problem in the early period of production of any new chip until the fabrication process gets tweaked.
Samsung try to use a common platform for several models. My NP900X4C says "Computer Brand Name: Samsung 900X3C/900X3D/900X4C/900X4D". Same BIOS (I think) and same drivers/ software even if the boards physically are different.
I have edited the title of that thread to include the 740.
That's more relevant to the NP730U3E thread (740 is touchscreen version of 730).

Also, the 8850 version has been mentioned previously in the thread and has been available at PC World for a couple of weeks. It's not really that big of a deal...

whosscruffylooking Notebook Enthusiast
I bought the 8850/i5 version from PCWorld because I was fed up with waiting for the better model. The saving was more than enough to pay for a 256GB 840 Pro SSD. I could have done with the extra cores of the i7 version, but don't really need the top end GPU.
Overall I'm very happy. I wish the case was slightly easier to get into, and the backlight driver/software could be better. In terms of spec, I really wish they'd gone for 8GB soldered as standard, with the expansion slot empty, and dumped the VGA in favour of DisplayPort, or even better, Thunderbolt. The VGA port is very poor - I've tested with several monitors which are normally pin sharp with VGA. HDMI is fine, although I don't know what the highest resolution is that it can run (hopefully 3840x2180@30hz, so that it can be run with a 32" screen with the same ppi as the laptop).
Here are my Windows index scores:
Processsor: 7.1 (was 7.2 before I installed Hyper-V!)
Memory: 7.5
Graphics: 6.7
Gaming Graphics: 6.7
Primary hard disk: 8.1 (this is with 840 Pro) -

I don't want to start a touch vs non-touch fight, but for me touchscreen on a laptop is useless. Did you see the reflections in the videos posted 1-2 pages ago? Jeez, I couldn't even see what was going on in the game! What's the point of having 178° viewing angles if reflections screw up all the colors after 10°? If they can provide a matte touchscreen I'll be the first in line to buy it, but until then...I hope matte screens don't die because of the new "touch fashion"...

I currently own a reflective screen laptop and have had no problems with reflections. Of course if you plan to use the machine outdoors then this may be an issue but for me, and I feel most people, it isn't. You can buy an anti reflective coating from 3m I believe and this will reduce glare, not the best option if you plan to use it outdoors but better than nothing.
Here's another that may help you

Guys I started an owner's thread here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sam...ers-lounge-np770z5e-np780z5e.html#post9135887

Any chance any of you that got the 770z7e can check what LCD panel you've got? (Device manager --> monitor --> properties --> details --> choose hardware ID in the dropdown menu).

Hi guys
I've had this laptop for 2 weeks now - NP780Z5E (8850m, Core i5 version with touchscreen)
I posted my review in the owners thread if anyone is interested.
Paid £899 for mine from PCWorld but since then it looks like the price has gone up to £999!

I am not sure if I should ask it here or in another thread, but what is your opinion about Samsung? The only reason I am hesitating whether to buy this notebook or not is that many people said that Samsung has a poor customer support. How long can this notebook last? (by last I mean run windows smoothly without freezing, bluedeath etc.) How about the graphics card, is it going to be able to handle the games released in 2015-16?
Did you have samsung before, if yes, then did you have any problems with it in the first 2 years?
Thank you for you answers -
Generally when windows stops running "smoothly" and starts freezing, etc, it's on the user, not the machine. If you're good about not installing tons of crap, and regularly defragging, running anti-virus and anti spyware, you'll be fine.

What was the final consensus reached about a clean install vs a recovery when installing an ssd? Is there any way to download the drivers for this chronos if I just format an 840 pro and throw it in there?
-
To users 770z5: could you check what LCD panel you've got? Thx in advance for your reply.

Their technical support is a definite weakness, judging from some of the entertaining responses that get posted here from time to time. So you come here for your first level support and we tell you when it is time to approach Samsung.

The funny thing, I could do all of the above 2 years ago. -

Amazon just let me know, my 770z5e will be shipped today - I am so happy to hear this :smile:

It's the march of time... But that can be mitigated through regular maintenance.

When will Samsung release the 15" 8870m model in the U.S. already! It seems ridiculous that yet again Best Buy has the gimped laptop model. I refuse to shop at Best Buy because of this. Not to mention they reduced they're return policy to only 15 days. I might just get the 17 inch model or maybe I'll settle for an overpriced MacBook Pro.
-

Okay not "inferior", but the version that isn't as good that no one really wants unless they can't afford the 100 or so extra for a much better GPU. -
But it's still better than nothing
-
Hi everyone, been lurking on this thread since it first came out. Was eagerly waiting for this laptop didn't want the best buy version. Wanted a new laptop for gaming and school thought this was it. But I recently discovered the Lenovo y500 with the dual 650m gpus. I know it has terrible battery life but price will be a lot cheaper for something that is just as good in my book. So unless the black version of the Samsung comes out within the next few days this will be my choice
-
But like me, most people won't even consider a non 8870m version and the fact that we've had to wait THIS long for the real version to come out gets more and more frustrating by the day.
If there's nothing substantial by April 15th (my birthday, tax day, and also the middle of the month), then I honestly will give up and forget about this laptop until I happen to stumble upon it when it is completely 100% in stores. -
I returned the 8770m version today so that I can get the 8870m version.
All I'm saying is I don't think we can blame bestbuy -

for those curious about the 8870, this thread has it, and has custom testing

i think some people that see the graininess is similar to the effect of a screenprotector on a phone.. i use wet screen protectors and you can see a very very light graininess effect buts it not ALL THAT BAD to what people make it out to be. Honestly i've used this over 3 weeks.. you don't even notice if you dont think about it. Its not like a deadpixel. If its definitely bothering you guys that much, just return the laptop and wait for an Asus.
-
should be picking up my 16GB version later on today guys, so excited! Then I'll just need to find a cheap samsung 840 pro and I'll be good to go
-
When you get it can you check to see if there's an express cache? Canada computers is probably wrong but just in case! -
I have the y500 just got it. I love the msata (256gb ssd drive i added) . I love the sli gt650. I have them both overclocked to 980 MHz. (overclocking got me an extra 5-10 frames per second in for example in Crysis 3. I can play 1920x1080 and I can do this in all games with detail still set on high and still get 35-40 frames per second. ...BUT it is a tank and it has a big old screen bezel the 3 hours battery bites. It also has the bios locked down so it requires a custom bios to do something like change the wifi card etc. Yes the wifi card is weak. All games do not take advantage of SLI neither does the adobe suite of programs (which I use). The screen is not bad but it no IPS challenger. Still with taxes in I did not break 1300 (+ 2 year warranty). I also got a 170 watt power supply as well. The touch pad is not as nice as the Samsung either. I have been torn between keeping it or returning it and getting the new Samsung. However having the extra 1 TB drive for storage is the cats behind . Both of these units have their strengths You know what they say the grass is always greener. Just something to think about. It does run super quite and cool even gaming overclocked for hours. This is its saving grace.

Definitely by next week. Like Friday the 6th -
Haha I have a routine where I go Computers>Laptops>Samsung>Core i7 and then I look for the Chronos haha. It was a good day when that ATIV Book 6 was on there for a bit. Indicative of good things coming.
I'm not negative, but I do come off as impatient and I realize that. Mainly this is because the longer I wait, the more my MBPr goes down in value and the less I'll get for it. Thankfully, a recent check on eBay showed me that they are going for $1800+ which is simply fantastic news. -
I have a google alert for series 7 chronos, 780z5e and 770z5e
Il make one for 880z5e I guess
I check Canada computer's site every day, to see if it's in stock anywhere
