Any source or base to that claim?

Performance also depends on the specific game, because there are game with optimization for Nvidia or AMD GPU, so it's not badly build by AMD, but if a game is realized in specific way for Nvidia GPU, obviously the performance on a AMD GPU will be penalized, but I have to agree with you the general performance will stay the same even with new drivers.
I don't understand why there are so many gamer interested to this notebook, if you are looking for a gaming notebook you have to search for a gaming notebook and this is not a gaming notebook. -
Send my 17" series chronos back due to the sound of the bluray drive.
I ordered a new one and the sound is about the same. Conclusion: this thing is kinda loud. This is a just received just unboxed new unit. For those of you with the bluray drive it might sound like its broken but I guess thats just how it sounds.
Made a new vid.

i disagree completely. This is most certainly a gaming notebook. Granted its a mixed bag, which is why it appeals to so many of us. Its an every day notebook, can easily be used for professional use, including graphic and web design (my field).... and it is also very capable of being a gaming notebook. The appeal to me is the combination of the sleek body, and the gaming performance.
-
I agree. It's not made specifically made for gaming. But anything that beats the 650m definitely is gaming capable imo. The chronos is also more capable of gaming than some true gaming notebooks, like the alienware m14x for example.
I have said this countless of times. There just isn't any laptop as thin, mobile and gaming capable as the chronos out there. That's why gamers look into this laptop. -
Gaming notebook are different things, they are capable to keep turbo boost on cpu and gpu even if they are both used at 100%.
Obviously you are free to use this notebook for everything you want, but complain about gaming on this notebook are out of place.
This is a notebook all-round, with a good GPU slightly limited by throttling.
For web design an HD4000 is enough...

Has anybody tested "bestbuy" version for performance in 3D modeling software as Rhino, Maya, or 3DS max. And also rendering with Vray for Rhino. Editing high resolution images in Photoshop? Thanks
-
Alchemist was doing some animations and noted the system definitely needed more RAM to cope with what they were doing. I would think high-res PS would not be an issue. I run that on my now dated Asus G1 without problems.
-
id like to play games on my notebook, without having a thick, loud, tacky designed laptop that has different colored lights and has to 'ironically?' throw the word FRAG in there somewhere. a sleek professional laptop, that is powerful and can run current gen games. If we were looking for just a gaming laptop, we wouldnt be in this thread. I dont recall anyone saying they are looking at this purely for gaming. The card is not the issue I have, its a more than capable card... its how i am anticipating Samsung handling the drivers supporting this card

Found a reference to a Canadian model! -
I don't know why you're still freaking out about this. It's a slot loading drive, they make noise as they pull the disc in my. My Dell XPS M1530 from 2007 makes clicking sounds just like that when it takes a disc in, too.
-
Sorry if this is an obvious question, but is it possible to supplement the 1TB HDD with an SSD, without replacing it? I really need more than 256G of storage, and a combination of HDD and SSD would be ideal.
Thanks for any thoughts! -
can the 1tb HDD be taken out and sold?
then use the cash to assist in the purchase of a ssd -
Anyone with the 17" model?
Samsung Galaxy Note II -
I returned mine thinking it was defective. Now that I got a new one...the sound is the same. So your right. Many people said it was faulty..apparently its just loud.
Samsung Galaxy Note II -
If you don't need of warranty you are free to do it.
-
Taking it out doesn't void the warranty, but selling it would as you need to give it in with all the parts it came with when getting it arrived
-
I think they refuse to repair a notebook if it does not come back with all the original parts, also
someone has said, on Italian forum, that HDD screws are covered with a blues paint, maybe it's a warranty seal.
I'm investigating about this info, so I'm asking to others owners if they have noticed this blue paint on HDD screws, obviously I'm talking with people that have already swapped HDD with SSD. -
It explains in the user guide how to swap the HDD, and says something like "if you need help opening the base please contact Samsung"
-
The "Blue Paint" is just locktite, there is no way for them to know if you have opened the device or not if done properly. I have already switched out the 1TB to SSD on the 15 inch 8770m model with no issue.

I've been looking at this laptop/ thread for a while now and am probably going to buy the 8870m model as shown above, my only concern is with the ram upgrade being limited to 12gb due to the 4gb soldered to the motherboard as far as i am aware? Will this be sufficient for the odd bit of video editing and gaming and mostly uni work or is it worth waiting for the 16gb as standard model to be released?
Cheers -
edit.......
-
would be nice if you can share with us a video of the entire laptop? A quick review like its thicknesss, ergonomics, weight , front and back covers and the display. As i cant seem to find a video of anyone with the 17inch 8870 laptop
-
Hi,
I came across your post and wonder if and how it would be possible to prevent throttling by underclocking your video card. I am just curious.
By how much do you underclock the card so to prevent them from throttling during long period of gaming?
Thanks! -
From your description, it sounds like 8/12gb will be ample (not many apps or games need more than this, yet!) - and there is the crux, notice the "Yet", however, most mid range laptops only come with 4gb, so this already blows those out of the water!
-
nice find. it says RELEASED at 28 - march , so technically the 8870 15 inch should already be available in Canada
(any canadians here can confirm?)
-
Sadly no(I'm Canadian), but that link showed up for the s01ub like a week before the product page showed up, so should be soon.
Also it doesn't mention the 8870 anywhere
It'd be pretty funny if Canada for it first
There's also a page for the s02ca
http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/model/NP780Z5E-S02CA
Quite a few sites have the s02ca listed with the 8870m and 16gb of ram, but all of of stock.
I think this is pretty good news. At least proof that there are 2 seperate chronos models coming in.
I'm going to give best buy a call later to see if they have any news. -
Well... Throttling IS actually underclocking, so there's not much difference..

8gb system ram and 2gb video ram will be good enough for about 6 years at least i would think...ps4 is gonna have 8gb and i'm sure xbox 720 will have the same. *most* AAA studios lead development on those machines. PC versions are generally ports.
-
The time that 8gb of ram won't be enough for gaming is still far away indeed. PS4 Has 8gb of DDR 5 ram though.
-
Hey Guys,
does anybody of you know how the price of 780z5e version will be compared to 770z5e. Both with the specifications: 8GB Ram, Core i7-3635QM, HD 8870M.
Cheers -
So what happens when you add a Win 8 pro key?
Wont this cause problems with the win 8 pro key thats in the bios?
Samsung Galaxy Note II -
It seems that the only market where both are available is UK, and the price seems the same.
-
It's coming out in Canada, 770z5e-s01ca, according to the support page
-
I actually prefer the look of the "black" keys on the silver body.
It also must help regarding legibility of the printing in different lighting conditions (with/without backlight) - regarding the increased contrast - versus the silver keys version. -
I'm speaking of market where they are already available and the price is known.
-
Thanks for noticing my post! Common graphics card-overclocking software(MSI Afterburner, Sapphire Trixx) will let you raise or lower the graphics card's clock at load. By underclocking it you can lower the power consumption and heat that causes the throttling.
By how much: the only magic number is the temperature at which the system throttles (95 C I believe). You have to lower the clocks to a point where it doesn't exceed 95 C.
There's a difference of THE AMOUNT of downclocking, and there's fps stability (you can either let the system lower your clocks during your intense gaming sessions or you can lower them yourself so your gaming sessions don't get interrupted) -
You will have to sacrifice the DVD Drive (available only on the 17") and replace it with a caddy to hold your 1 TB HDD.
You can go to Newmodeus and look for a caddy for laptop model 700z7c (1st generation 17" Chronos). The new 17" Chronos case should not have changed much, if at all, so the caddy should fit. -
Someone else has advised on the 17" model, if you want the 15", there's definitely no internal space spare, I'd recommend swapping for the SSD and then getting a USB3 enclosure for the original 1TB drive - its the simplest and cheapest way to allow your desired combination of speed and storage. It's what I've done!
-
I never ever exceeded 75 °C on both GPU and CPU during lengthy, demanding game sessions. Yet both gpu and cpu throttle a few times a minute. This must be power-related and not heat related IMO.
-
So I got my replacement 17" with the 8870m.
Having had some experience with my previous version I cloned a factory image using to Samsung Recovery and swapped the drive for the 840 pro in about 40 minutes.
Its amazing how fast this system is with the 840 pro. You never ever have to wait, even when you throw eveything at it. AMAZING.
Im also happy i have the bluray drive instead of touchscreen.
Also i might add some Ram, but the 8gb with the ssd seems more than enough. With thr standard 5400rpm drive makes this system unusable.
Samsung Galaxy Note II -
would love if you can post a quick video about your 17" 8870 ? would like to see the ergonomics and how it looks in general. The pics on best buy aren't sufficient. -
For those of you sick of waiting and might be thinking of alternative, this laptop is a v good alternative to chronos: Ultrabook Gigabyte 2442F GIGABYTE - Notebook & Netbook - Notebook & Netbook - U series - U2442F , it comes with a 650M which can be easily overclocked to closely (not exactly) match an 8870.
Personally i'm gonna wait but thought i'll share this info
-
According to tests this is crap
Handschriftlich von meinem Note 2 gesendet -
I ment If there is ever a new driver, it won't make things much better for gaming. Usually, when there is so much time gone after initial release of the hardware and no update on drivers- things usually are bad.
HD8870M is on par with Nvidia GT650M, even tough the Vantage score is so much bigger for AMD, but we all know that those benchmark scores are for fanboys. What really counts is the ingame performace.
HD7970M is bad in benchmarking but in games it's better on even with GTX680M (after a good Catalyst driver update). But sadly it's the other way around for HD8870M and no driver update is gona change that - sadly
-
That doesn't really make much sense to me.
Laptops with the 8870 are just starting to come out now, and the laptops are using very old drivers that were never designed to optimize the 8870. Even Samsung has said that the 8870 is not performing properly due to a problem with their driver.
More so, on some games the 8870 performs extremely well, at gtx670 levels, while at other is performs sub-gt650m levels. These results only make sense if you blame drivers.
Even more so, there have been benchmarks which show the 8870 performing better on high settings than low settings, again clearly showing a software problem.
Obviously it's possible that new drivers don't fix this, but there's definitely something wrong driver wise -
Cool, did costumer support tell that, or where did samsung say that? And yes the 8870m has a lot of power, skyrim performance is incredible to me. If drivers can make it perform like it should like it does in skyrim, this will be a very promising card.
-
Someone posted it a while back
-
What is the exact model number for the 15" with 8870M and touch screen again please?
-
It just updates to Win 8 pro. no problems. You might want to check your win 8 key and note it down for possible use in the future. There is a program called magic jelly bean that will save all your keys to a file, google it. Run that before you upgrade to pro.
