it's 780z5e

I want the 17 inch laptop with 8870m so badly but I can't find a place that ships to Canada....
-
Thank you.
-
That's not the exact model
It'll be something like NP780z5e-s02ub
S01ub is 8770m -
Ahh ok that makes sense. Thanks.
-
Thanks for reply. I came from the Dell subforum (L521x) as I was looking at this new samsung chronos as a replacement for that xps as I am having modest throttling issues with that. I will try your method and downclock it a little just to if it makes a difference.
-
I tried that just now. My framerates went up about 5fps on far cry 3 high preset, but this could also be because I was in a different area. But the extra 5fps were not helping since my frameretes randomly dropped from 35 to 25 fps every few seconds. Just like before both gpu and cpu stayed well under 70 °C. The cpu never throttled thermally according to hwinfo64.
Just like before one and a few times two of the cores clocks dropped to 1,2 ghz every now and then. Could this be because the game did not need it or is this throttling?
Gpu was most of the time on turbo clock (775mhz) or normal clock (725mhz) and only dropped a few times to ~650mhz and ~690mhz. Gpu utilisation drops to 64% about 50% of the time (which it really shouldn't with such a demanding game). This could be the cause of the random frame drops...
Looking at my other logs without the 99% power plan I noticed the same drops to 64% usage around 50% of the time. -
iPhone went crazy, ignore this post
-
Does Best Buy or Samsung in the U.S. sell NP780Z5E-S02UB model because I've been looking and both only sell S01UB with HD 8770 1GB.
If not, what is the release date for such model? -
No, and nobody knows.
-
All of the delay in releasing this is testing my willpower in waiting for the 8870. Starting to have serious considerations about the 8850 model, which is in stock just down the road from me.
Only problem I have is that the T01UK model says it has DDR3 ram, not the gDDR5. Does anybody have an opinion about if this will cause major issues for gaming such as SimCity, or if it will be ok?
Apologies if this has been asked before, but any opinions greatly appreciated. Not getting a definitive answer from talking to myself... -
Thanks very much for the reply. So an external enclosure is the only way . . .
-
just don't, i know it's hard but be patient!
-
Will do my best.
Samsung Galaxy Note II -
I'm probably going to do the same. I ordered an SSD and 8gb stick of ram today from Amazon, and i'm thinking I'll go pick up the 8850 tomorrow. A lot of it has to do with the fact that I want to pay with my US credit card (which I can only do in store) and the next pcworld shipment of 8870m/i7 models aren't going to make it into stores.
-
If you really want 8870/i7, but aren't worried about touchscreen, then John Lewis are selling this laptop in the 770Z5E variant. Some stores are getting this in now - might be a wait, but at least it will be in store at some point, which seems more likely to be sooner than Currys PCWorld.
-
Thanks for that, I do want the touch screen though :/
It seems as though there isn't a giant difference between the 8850 and 8870, and a lot of what I've read says that an i7 is kinda overkill even for most games. -
With all respect - can a moderator update this thread OP to include a "Is the 8870 released in the US?" note? Everybody's getting antsy, there's about 3 pages (on my maxed out forum settings) of the same question being asked.
At least the newcomers don't have to sift through 100s of pages! -

(i) Please advise what you want me to edit the first post to say;
and
(ii) You will have to remind me to make any change in the future.
John -
I think all you really need to say is a bold and large statement Q: Is the 8870 version released in the United States yet? A: NO! Not yet and no one has any information on a release date at this time! make the no like size 50 font lol Put it in a prominent position towards the top I'd think.
-
UK Chronos Fans, looks like Samsung are ramping up for an official release, just spotted the twitter hashtag #Series7Chronos with a few subtle tweets being dropped into the official SamsungUK twitter feed. Personally not bothered as I've owned this for a while, but I wonder if Currys PCWorld jumped the gun and were told to stop selling these, rather than actually running out of stock! Might mean that a full release is imminent!
-
PCWorld is still selling Chronos 7 just in lower specs, no conspiracy theories please.
Another version of 880 comes up, this time from Netherland
NP880Z5E-X01NL -
No reason not to allow theories.
Any ideas as to when it's coming out are welcome imo -
John,
I agree with Alexige:
Q: Is the 8870 version released in the US?
A: For the 17.3" version, YES.
For the 15.6" version, NO. No other information on potential release dates is available at this time.
I wouldn't worry about reminders either; I'm good about pestering people
I might try to make a table of some sorts to list out what regions have which versions out and about. -
Thank you. Hence my use of the phrase "I wonder..." ;-)
-
I'd phrase it something like this for the US members:
Living in US and want the 15" chronos with 8870?
Option 1 ==> Wait and wait and wait followed by random speculation
Option 2 ==> Move to Canada (not only will you get your notebook but face a better economy and more pleasant humans)
Option 3 ==> Keep posting in this thread everyday as to when the US version will come out
Option 4 ==> F Samsung and get another notebook and make threads that Samsung officially can go and eat a banana. -
^ now now, let's be civil about this
-
It isn't out in Canada, but is starting to show up as out of stock on a lot of sites
And I've never understood this whole Canada being nicer thing, lol
I contacted samsung support via live chat and asked if they could give me the list of specifications for the NP780z5e-S02CA. They said that they couldn't find anything as it is very new, but that they have contacted the people in charge of product details on the site and have requested that they put the info page up for it. I'm assuming they'll do the same for the s01CA as well. -
It's beginning to look like by the time the 8870m version sees the light of day in america it will be time for them to refresh the design with haswell processors intel will start trickling out in june.
I really like this computer, had one for 3 weeks before taking it back to wait for the then imminent release of the 8870m version in the US. Its a really good mix of power and battery life, like nothing else out there. Its only real weak spot is the HD and thats easily fixed. In fact I still have an 250gb 840 ssd that I bought for that purpose.
I may still pick one up, either the best buy model if it gets cheaper or the 8870m model once it makes its way to availability, if its not too close to haswell releasing and changing the game a bit. In the interim I ended up going another direction, got a dell xps 2710 all in one refurb for the same price and couldn't pass up the qvga display. its 640m isn't even as good as the 8770m though, but its close enough. So now im using that at home, and an hp envy x2 tablet/laptop/hybrid for my mobile use, its only about as powerful as a core 2 duo but its battery life is 12+. -
Is there a 17 inch version with touch screen?
-
Nope, don't think that there are any 17" touchscreen laptops out
-
I think I'm going to go for the BestBuy model. I don't need 16GB of ram or a super high-end 8870 graphics card. 8GB should be more than enough, and 8770 will run games just fine (at least for me). Plus, saving $400+ is a bonus.
-
No 17" touch laptops that I know of yet, but dell is releasing an 18" all in one that might fit the bill. Basically an 18" tablet with a 5hr battery life that comes with a charging dock/stand and wireless keyboard / mouse. So its a desktop when you need it and a monster tablet to carry around the house. I'm sure they will make slip cases for it so you could take it with you too. Its gonna run $899 for the base model with 1080p touch screen... and go up to i7 processors, more memory and hd space or ssds. Its also light like a tablet, not a mega box to carry around like the sony tap 20.
-
Can only imagine how expensive the comparable version will be BUT I WANT IT! lol
-
Makers of laptops dedicated to gaming nothing to do with Samsung or this laptop. Each word is a different brand.

Anyone whom has swapped hdd with SDD...
I'm concerned because opening series 7 viods warranty.
Can you get into/open laptop without having to remove 'security seals, ect'???
Is there anyway that they can tell, provided you swap back in oem parts, that you've been in the chasis?? -
There are no security seals etc. I replaced my ssd as well as the memory, there is no way for them to know that you have opened your laptop. Just use the proper tools and take your time. Once you have the back off changing out the hard drive is a breeze. I worked my way from front to back and that worked well enough for me.
Before purchasing this laptop I purchased two HP Spectre XT TouchSmart 15t-4000 Ultrabook and replaced the HDD with an SSD both times only to realize that each laptop had a stuck pixel. I returned both of these with no problem. (I know that this is not samsung but it is the same process, an equally difficult machine to open and similar return processes.

One point to add to this - make sure you get EXACTLY the right size screwdriver. It's quite small, and the heads of the screws are black on the outside. If you use the wrong size, you risk exposing silver, making it evident you've opened it, or sheering the head off if you're too vicious.
On another point, we think that opening it doesn't void the warranty, but no-ones needed to test this, that we know of, yet.
It is quite an easy process, though, just take your time and be careful. -
haha agreed, i lived in Toronto for 1 year as a student and it had its fair share of grade A a**holes (no offense
) like any other major city in the united states.
Just checked the samsung US website, they're still showing the old chornos 7 in the main page, ridiculous -__- -
8850 + ddr3 sucks, what's the point of having a powerhouse with you're killing it with a ddr3 ? might as well get a 650M laptop, much cheaper, if it was 8850 + ddr5 i would've said go ahead. it makes a huge difference.
agreed though on the i7 not being that much of an advantage, i5 is sufficient. -

I have adopted your suggestion and added it to the first page.
For those who are frustrated by the wait, I would repeat my previous comment that Samsung may well be constrained by the availability of the 8870M GPUs from AMD. If I were Samsung and have limited supplies then I would first sell in those markets where the profit margins are best. The USA has prices which make we who live elsewhere jealous. Presumably the manufacturers benefit from economies of scale but that doesn't work when there's a supply constraint.
It's worthwhile getting a new screwdriver with new tips to avoid the risk of slippage. Worse than damaged paint is the risk that damage to the slots means you can't get the screws out. One of these has the right tips for my Series 9 screws (so a good chance it would fit the Series 7). Maplin also sells something similar. It's a nice size of handle - big enough to allow firm grip and control without being unwieldy.
As for warranty, cause no damage, put back the parts supplied by Samsung should you need service and you will be fine.

NP780Z5E-S02CA (15inch 8870) is now available in Canada as "backorder" from canadacomputers.com , the price is $1700 ! I hope that's not an indication of how much it's gonna cost in the US.
-
dang, I was hoping it wouldn't be that large a difference. with my payment situation though I don't see myself being able to get an 8870 version anytime soon (pcworld won't ship to stores for this round)
-
Really, where? It's not on their website yet.
-
do we know if the touch- and non-touch have comparable displays? I mean the panel technology - AFAIK someone posted about an MVA panel, but is that for both 770 and 780 or we don't know?
-
Been on back order for about 3 months now
-
Gotta be honest, my interest is really starting to wane on getting this.
-
Ditto, unfortunately. :\
