I have recently got this laptop and I love it but it has some serious quirks that are really bugging me.

I have updated the laptop to Windows 8 Pro x64 using a totally clean install (Which was a pain itself until i worked out UEFI etc) and used the Samsung installer to update the drivers (All except NVidia which i get from their own website). That's all fine. However if I install the Modeshift application it stops Windows Update from working as either no updates are installed or they just stop downloading part way through and fail install.

I contacted Samsung who told me because it's an update they won't help. I know for a fact it is Modeshift as deinstalling it means update works fine.

I have Windows update set to Manual but it has updates for Office 2013 and others Not having it working is a big deal. But that said, what do i lose if Modeshift is not installed?

I am afraid I don't have an answer to your question. But I believe Modeshift is unique to the G7C: The only times I have seen it mentioned was with this model.

Hence I can almost guarantee you there is a better chance that fellow G7C owners will see your question in the G7C Owners Lounge thread, linked below:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sam...g7c-amd-radeon-hd-7970m-geforce-gtx-675m.html

If you want, we can merge this into the G7C thread. Your thread, your call. Just let us know.

If its a better place then feel free to merge. I saw that post but given the 180+ pages wasn't sure it would be the best place :)

That's a fair concern. OK, then here's an idea: Just re-post your question there in the G7C thread.

Normally we delete cross-posts, but we'll just let this one run its course and see what happens. That'll give you a bit more exposure. I don't think we'll be overwhelmed by traffic on this subject -- I just hope we can get an answer for you. If you get responses in the G7C thread and none here, we can just close this one.

BTW, I just Googled site:notebookreview.com/samsung modeshift Win8 and found this discussion in that G7C thread. See if it contains something useful for you, and maybe refer to it when you post your question there.

Thanks for keeping this thread alive. I've scoured the internet for problems with NP700G7C-S01US (W7 x64 Home) and Windows Updates for over six months and have had very little luck. I've tried Samsung recovery (finally deleted that damn thing as windows update never worked after a full recovery), been to Samsung support (no help, they said they'd seen the issue but forwarded me to Microsoft), Microsoft forums, third party forums and nothing I did fixed Windows Updates on my computer. I finally found this thread for the slightly newer UK model.

In response to the OP. I'd never imagined Modeshift could be the culprit, and even though it was always kinda buggy I never uninstalled it. I finally had some time to rewipe the machine with a Windows 7 x64 Home disk and when I went looking for SW updates, there was no trace of Modeshift. It looks like it got completely scrapped by Samsung. It no longer shows in SW Update application and the
Samsung support site has been whittled down to only include SW Update. The funny thing is, Windows Update seems to work just fine (so far) without it, and the Modeshift dial seems like it doesn't' need a driver to work.

Anyway, I am guessing you found your answer long ago, but thanks for starting this thread (and keeping it alive). I finally have some closure over this very frustrating issue. Hopefully Windows Update will continue to work with no problems.

    Thanks!

I myself have the modeshift active but little else. For all of the function keys you also need Easy settings. with the newer version it skips the short boot up freeze or latency issues. I know the dial works in the sense of changing the hardware keyboard lights but I do not think it will control the power profiles. I think you need the software too for that.

Thanks for the additional info. Yeah, I'm still not convinced Modeshift was causing the Windows Update trouble.. but the fact is it's working for now. Since Modeshift is no longer available from Samsung, could someone upload the latest Modeshift installer to a dropbox and share it? Is that an OK request on here?

    Thanks!

Wow, at the Samsung site there is not even our model number listed. Now that stinks. Even with Samsungs SoftwareUpdate there is no mention of ModeShift. Now it does seem there are two versions. The original one, under Windows 7 was 1.0.0.12. Under Windows 8 the updated version is 2.0.0.1. I have placed them on my server since if you don't have SWUpdate you can no longer get these or even the SWUpdate under our model number. Warning on these are over 300mb each.

Modeshift 1.0.0.12 (Windows 7 32 and 64 bit) is listed on the Samsung UK support site.

However, there's no listing for the Windows 8 version.

Yeah I was on the US site of course. While the OP was under the UK our poster is US so I did no think to go elsewhere. Figured since I had both easiest just to host them on my server.

Since the files are Samsung's I wouldn't normally host them but once support for a machine I own gets abandoned I'll host away. I still host files for my old defunct Everex XT5000T after the company folded. Even as old as it is I get the occasional download from the server statistics. This is also why I use a paid server as I can get statistics for pages and files etc..

I should note that I have Windows 7 but decided to install the newer version of mode shift. This seems to install a few new screen savers and included are a few wall papers to go with them.

Cool! Thanks for that bit of info!

I am only now realizing that the webcam software (and driver?) is also nowhere to be found. I believe it was called Cyberlink YouCam. Mind hosting that as well?

I don't care as much about the other Cyberlink applications (PowerDVD and Power2Go).... but is YouCam part of a bundled suite?

    Thanks!!

That was not on the update servers nor the web site. Also since others could use the files illegally I would not host them to begin with.
