How are you liking the mouse buttons, I really liked the R580 but the indented single-piece mouse was making me hesitate.

    Build quality is stunning,
when you first fire her up, it install alot of microsoft crap, ie windows word and all that junk, didnt take me long to get rid of that lot
also installs Mcafee antivirus rubbish, that got uninstalled.
installs some nice samsung software, best of is samsung update plus, which finds all your drivers you need
Gameing wise, realy great, installed Bad company 2, ran it 1440x900 with most high settings, no lag what soever, very impressed so far
one other thing, ive installed windows 7 64 bit on here now, didnt take me long to download all the drivers i need, from samsungs sight, great support on there
    anyways more testing tomorrow
    regards
    Josh

Thanks for your prompt reponse, I'm very grateful. Hoping to get the I3 version as I'm not a gamer. I read a review (cant remember the site name) and they really slated the build quality ie lots of flex, cheap plastic etc.

Just need to look at one in the flesh before I bite the bullet x

This is what notebook check stated

Samsung continues the look on the wrist-rest and on the work surface. Unfortunately, the high-gloss surfaces attract fingerprints and join these to an ugly greasy film. The keys are embedded in a high-gloss grid that seems to be for cleaning reasons. When the keys are pressed, a cleaning cloth (included) can reach the black grid.

The colorfulness can't distract from the fact that it is a case with an average workmanship. Samsung calls the chassis DuraCase, which we regard as mere marketing phraseology. These days, most consumer notebooks have the same or a better quality and stability

We can twist the chassis easily with both hands. The wrist-rest is firm, but the key field bends evidently in many areas. The keyboard coils particularly intense over the optical drive. We can dent the lid obviously without much pressure. Pressure marks first turn up under strong pressure, though.

The hinges keep the big lid securely in place, but have a slight tendency to teeter. We need both hands to open and close it. The hinges fit so tight that even the heavy chassis doesn't stay on the desk when we try to open it. The maximum opening angle of about 120 degrees is just sufficient for a use on the lap.

Seems to me sombody has a grudge against samsung, finger prints ive yet to see one on my laptop, and as for the ugly greasy film, yes it has a high gloss finnish but its not ugly, and its not greasy, the 120 degree opening angle is just perfect, and i never have mine open that much anyways, yes it is a bit stiff to open, but i dont find that a problem,
at the end of the day, i paid 770 uk pound for this laptop, and i did shop about, But i could not find anything better for the price i paid

How is the keyboard? They said that it has more flex/problems than the R580.

Found positive reviews on the Bestbuy.com (american site)....amazing prices as well! we British always seem to have to pay so much more for products!

There are a fair amount of comments regarding the short battery life. Will have to do some research to see how much an additional battery will cost

Hey there, am planning on getting the R780 i5 model as soon as funds clear too. Concerned about his 32 bit 64 bit malarkey. I know what I need to know with these things, but not sure exactly what I need to do once I get my new machine! Please can you post a link to the exact page to download the drivers for 64 bit as I jsut looked on the Samsung website and couldn't see anything glaringly obvious to update this. But then I can be a bit slow!

Also, Westerdaled, where did you get yours from? Assuming in the UK? Getting all sorts of prices and finding it hard to find anywhere that stocks the i5 version too.
    Thanks in advance

if you goto samsung uk - downloads - r780 = performance you will see the drivers detailed as 64bit.

the 64bit upgrade is easy if you dont have a hard copy you can access a retail version for download from mydigital life. (Moderators please note this is a legit site which only links to the retail iso from places like amazon) your key on the bottom of the laptop can activate it

i got mine from laptopsdirect at 789 and used a free delivery code found online.

I got my R780 this week, and had a failed attempt to install Windows 64bit.

The NVidia drivers currently on the Samsung site (31st March) don't install, whinging about the wrong operating system! The background bitmap also seems to claim that the drivers are 32bit!

Fortunately the recovery solution soon got me back to where I started.

The list of R780 drivers here shows separate 32 and 64 bit nVidia drivers.

Hi all. I'm considering this laptop as replacement for the old one. One thing that makes me wonder is, does it have any multimedia buttons at all? On pictures there's no visible buttons above the keyboard. Only a power-on button and two speaker holes. So does it have multimedia touch buttons or do one use the "Fn" key combi for volume?

The driver I downloaded was flagged as the 64 bit version, I was quite careful NOT to pick the 32 bit as that would have been silly. I did find a thread elsewhere that reported the same problem (at around the same time).

I've just checked, the date on the 64 bit driver has been updated. ( http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/d...K&prd_mdl_name=NP-R780E&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P) so that's promising.

As for multimedia keys, I'm afraid you are stuck with FN + key. I know the volumen keys are on the cursors and mute is half a mile away. I'm not sure I've seen a play/pause/next/previous track FN combo at all.

Oh okay. Thx for the clarification rummyr. I just love the multimedia touch buttons on HP's and it baffles me that a huge 17" doesn't have a single one. I mean it's not that there isn't space for them and it's advertised as a multimedia laptop. Well you can't have everything I guess.

I think it's price. The R780 is a budget multimedia machine (or at least it is here in Australia). Each extra button adds to the cost of the machine. Personally, I don't miss the multimedia buttons as I have rarely used. I do miss having buttons to launch specific apps.

As to the HP touch buttons...

My wife had a HP with these on it. The laptop tended to sit on a table next to the bed at night. All these buttons had blue light behind them and the laptop cast a blue glow over the room. She also didn't like the buttons as they were to sensitive and couldn't be configured to the apps she wanted to use.

Yeah it's "a bit" cheaper here(DK) too compared to other similar spec'd laptops. But I can't imagine a couple of "real" buttons for volume etc. would explode manufacturing costs. I guess I'm one of the few people who use multimedia buttons alot.

The HP laptop was just an example and I agree they aren't the best. I'm not trying to bash the Samsung R780 at all, as I think it's great value for the money.

Purchased R780, running windows 7 home premium 64 bit, have lot of problems with Realtek 8192 E wireless lan 802.11n PCI-E Nic.
It will not connect, have to go back to b/g setting to connect. Samsung technical support level 2 have no clue of whats going on. They advised that I should send it back for repair after spending several hours to fix the problem.
Cheap is always cheap, you get what you pay. R780 sucks.

Just to clear something up, dont bother with samsunguk phone support for 64 bit help, they are useless, they say they dont support 64 bit, but they do list them on there uk website as 64 bit, they are the worst support ever....

One other thing if you want 64 bit drivers get them of the Samsungus website, these worked for me
