I agree that can be done with a 15.0" panel (which the available info points to) but the S9's thinness enforces hardware compromises which might suit everyone. Personally, I don't need the thinness of the S9 which compromises the mardware spec. The Ivy Bridge 14" S7 might be of interest to me (assuming that Samsung decide to offer a UK version).

I am just hopeful the 15" screen is truly premium. I would like to see something that meets or beats whatever Apple delivers. I know that's a long shot.

I'm sort of in the same boat. While I think the 15" S9 will likely be a dream machine, I work from home and rarely travel these days -- therefore I don't *need* extreme thinness or even extreme lightness (although "desire" is a different story ;)).

But John, why would you look to the S7 and not the S5? Is it because of the resolution? Or ??

I've got a 32 gig MicroSD card installed in my Series 9, and I store my music on that, for the most part. 128 + 32 = your magic number.

For everything else, I just use a WD MyBook World 2, which is a pair of RAID 1TB drives for redundancy. It sits on a shelf in my house hooked up to the wireless router so that when I'm home I can access anything I need, and it's also accessible from any Internet connection.

Yes, it's the resolution. If I was happy with 768 vertical pixels then I'd carry around a 13" machine. My working day is spent in doing things in which more pixels means less scrolling. Why not, therefore, a 15.6" FHD machine you may ask? Because (i) it wouldn't fit in my favourite computer bag and (ii) I know that my eyes wouldn't like the smaller pixels (and increasing the display scaling reduces the effective real estate).

No need to convince me, I'm in the same camp! :)

Plus, in my case I don't want to change the DPI because I often go from the laptop screen to a 24" external monitor with 1920x1200. So one setting or the other would either look too big or too small.

    I'm using 1600x900 on a ThinkPad T420 with a mediocre 14" screen. I am running at 100% DPI.

    I also use a X301 and a T410s at 1440x900 and those are 13 and 14" screens.

1600x900 on a 15" screen with better color, contrast, brightness and viewing angles will be a major improvement.

Assuming the only improvement is the screen size, it's still going to be more than comfortable to me.

This video was uploaded today, but I don't know when it was shot.
I know this is for the 13" version, but it could apply to the 15" version as well. The spec sheet clearly shows 256GB SSD, i7-2637 ULV processor, and 4GB RAM.

EDIT: The video is from the official launch event yesterday in Soeul. There are a few more videos on that youtube channel including the 15" one, and the entire launch event. Does anybody speak korean that can watch and translate any important points?

    EDIT2: More info here

Looking at these videos, I see chrome around the touchpad. I don't think that was there on the ones shown during CES

I take that back. I do see it, but I didn't see it on some of the preproduction ones like this one:

I'm not trying to troll or make any buying option more difficult.
But Im having a hard time justifying buying this Samsung series 9.
I LOVE the way it looks, but the specs seem unimpressive.
The price is high, and most importantly, it's shipping with Sandy Bridge, when
    Ivy Bridge's release is imminent
I want it NOW, But I cant help thinking, it's best to wait a couple of months when Samsung refreshes it with Ivy Bridge.
If I am going to spend such a premium shouldn't I get the latest tech?

I'd like to see a comparison pic between series 9 -15'' and a previous gen ("conventional") 13'' laptop, in order to see the true reduction of its size.

The dimensions for the new 13" were released at the launch event in Korean (see attached). You should be able to compare the old 13 with the new 13. I haven't seen official dimensions for the 15" but they are likely buried at the Samsung Korean website.

I have no idea where I found this -- nor do I know if it's correct -- but I found these dimensions somewhere a while back:

    12.35 x 8.60 x 0.507 | 2.60 lbs - Series 9 13"
    14.05 x 9.33 x 0.586 | 3.51 lbs - Series 9 15"
    13.10 x 9.00 x 0.82x | 3.94 lbs - Series 5 14"

Again, not sure if that info is correct or not.

I was set on the 13", but the 15" is growing on me with 10 hours of battery (versus 7hrs for the 13") and more screen real estate.

Damn, that dark gray matte finish is sexy!

I think Samsung wants to see how well the new S9 will sell before they start offering the i7 and 256gb.

Does anyone know when the S9 will come to Canada?

^Bronze age, or a place where you have to wait an extra month to have one of the higher consumer laptops :)

I know that I have asked several best buy and futureshop guys, and a couple told me they are expecting shipments from samsung in the next few weeks, but they didn't know what would be in them. If Feb 27th is still the S9 date for the US, probably another month for us.

i purchased a 13.3 inch 900x3a and there was wifi problem. and u cant close the door while there was a micro sd card inside. so i sent it back.

if they solved this two problem this 15 inch will be perfect for me

    H everyone,

Does anyone have an experience with the samsung support ?

I always had a Dell computer with the next day assistance, so I'm worried about the fact that I will need a return to manufacturer when I will have a problem.

The 15" is really hot, but I hesitate with the HP Spectre just because of the guarantee.

I just talked with my rep at CDW here in the US. Even though it is Monday, Feb. 27, there are no shipments thus far. Worse (for me) is that the 'word' is that the 15-inch version (NP900X4B) isn't expected to be released until 2-3 weeks later than the 13-inch (NP900X3B). :frown:

He has a call into his Samsung rep, so if I hear anything new, I'll be sure to pass the information along.

UPDATE: He just emailed with the response from his Samsung rep.
"... 3-4 weeks actually and it COULD get pushed back to April!"

I'm a little confused by this sudden non-development. All along, since the CES show, Samsung has never indicated that there would be a problem with launching this snazzy new notebook on time - (i.e., today). When PC mag reported almost two weeks ago Samsung's 15-Inch Ultrabook Hits the Web | News & Opinion | PCMag.com that Samsung released the 15-inch (with i7 and 256GB) in Korea, I thought for certain we'd see .... something at least by today.
I am disappointed. I've already sold my Asus EP121 slate and while I 'need' this replacement, I am getting a little impatient. If Samsung could just tell us what's up with the delay, it might help.

Launching and releasing in a different part of the world means very little here. As far as I am concerned, I would rather not have them launch if there's an issue they are working on.

And for me, I'll end up waiting longer anyway because I want a 256GB SSD version. Or certainly something larger than 128GB.

Thanks for confirming the timing of the 15". :(

I wonder how much the delay for Ivy Bridge is playing into when we can expect the release of the 15-inch? New HUGE push back date reported today. Even longer than we had first anticipated.

This is what I call pile on BS journalism. CNET is quoting Gizmodo. Gizmodo is quoting the Financial Times or someone. Until Intel issues a press release, I wouldn't worry too much.

And yes, I would not be shocked to find out it's all related. Supply chain inventory management isn't easy especially during overlap periods like this.

Ivy Bridge is certainly a new interesting architecture, but I don't think there will be any significant performance cap to Sandy right from the start. Intel is saying that the 22 nm Ivy is fueling Moore's law for years to come. It's not like they'd use it's full potential right away. This is my opinion. I recently bought Chronos with Sandy i7 and didn't bother to wait for Ivy.

    Ok it's 2/28. I'm anxiously awaiting this 15" Series 9.

I put a call out to one of my sales reps at PC-Mall and they have the sku in the system but theres no specs or pictures. He thinks its the 15" version with 128GB SSD and 8GB of RAM.

I'm hoping I can get the 15" with 256GB SSD. He shows the part number for the 13.3" with 256GB SSD but do you think Samsung is doing that for cost reasons? IE) Spend less on the screen but more on the SSD?

I hope we can get it with 256GB SSD. I would of preferred a core i7 CPU also but the core i5 is still an upgrade over my tank of a Dell with an older core2duo.

I don't think any delay of Ivy Bridge would have anything to do with this laptop. Ivy Bridge was scheduled for the first week of April originally. This laptop was scheduled for 2/27. Plus I don't recall any of the CES coverage of this laptop make a mention of Ivy Bridge.

As nice as it may be to wait for Ivy Bridge, I'm really anxious to replace my POS heavyweight Dell so I don't care. I'll take the core i5 Sandy Bridge. Thats fine for what I need it for (general I.T. administration, internet apps, document processing, etc..)

The 13.3" Dell XPS 13 just came out yesterday and I ordered one for an Executive. I'd get one myself but I can't stand the lack of customization. It maxes out at 4GB RAM and you can't upgrade the display past 1366x768. Besides I prefer a 15" screen.
