Has anyone seen any indication that this might get a 256gb ssd? I haven't seen anything, and yet the 2011 refresh in mid-year had one.
If we have to wait till mid-2012 I will eat my hat. -

Considering Samsung is making 256GB mSATA SSD storage devices, I'm sure they'll be making a 256GB model. I am holding out for it.
-
I'm not sure if this article is legit, but look at the stats it shows:
" i7 processor, 6GB memory and 256G SSD"

I was referring to Samsung's mSATA PM830 is eight grams of pure SSD -- Engadget
Considering the first gen Series 9 notebooks came in 128GB and 256GB flavors, I have no doubt the second generation will, too. -
Right, that makes sense. I actually had forgotten that they came with 256GB.
-
Oh no doubt we'll get one eventually. But so far the only skus I've seen are the 13 and 15 inchers with a 128gb ssd. Both are now available for preorder, but not the 256gb.
I just don't want to have to wait till mid-year for the 256 is all. But I'm probably just jumping the gun. -

There's a placeholder at NP900X4B | Samsung Office but it's a mix of information. Some of the info is correct but most of it is taken from the previous generation.
-
Duralumin - Samsung's favorite aluminium case that presumably blocks wifi signals is back again!
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
Let's hope not. That stuff is WIFI kryptonite.
Actually I personally think the issue with the first gen Series 9 is the placement of the entire WIFI chipset and antenna in the bottom instead of running the antenna up into the lid. It's just a guess but they'd better have this solved in the 2012 generation. -
When will the i7 cpu version be available and will samsung offer a "wide [(vertical)] viewing angle" option for the 15" model?
-
It's 1600x900.
-
I got an email back from customer service saying that the NP900X4B has a 128gb capacity. So there will likely be some other model with 256gb, but you should expect it to cost more.
-
at least we now seem to have definitive measurements?
14.0" (W) x 9.3" (D) x 0.58" (H)
NP900X4B | Samsung Office -
resolution has nothing to do with Viewing Angle
. In the Witch's review on y0utub3, she commented the wide viewing angle was only available on the 13 inch series 9 and that is a shame. I was hoping Samsung would offer a wide-angle-viewable 15" version as well.
-
I see. I guess you threw me off with the word "option" but now I understand what you mean.
-
I agree. It seems like Samsung engineers are stupid. If this is really true, that they included a worse display than for the 13.3 version, then I really know why apple is doing much better than samsung.
First off, they use a non-glare display, which I'm not a big fan of, but I think it's really useful and can deliver same quality as glare displays. Although I think glare displays are much better for internet, videos and all other things, except of working outside.
So I would be happy if Samsung would offer both options or rather one, BUT with a good display and not something crappy for 1.5 grant!
But let's wait and see! -
I am a big fan of matted screens - if they had used glared displays like Apple, I would not be buying them.
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
I would not rush to judgement on this from one reviewer who could be TOTALLY wrong. When they start shipping machines and real owners receive them, then we'll hear all about the 15" machine here.
I fully expect it to be bad asse. -
Guys calm down, no one has seen a shipping version; it doesn't even exist yet. It's unlikely Samsung will maintain two SKUs of screens for Series 9; it's their top of the line series.
And second, matte displays are 100x better to use in sunlight/outdoor and business contexts. That's why that iPad, Nook, Fire etc. all use matte screens. Personally I think glare displays are useless but that's a personal opinion; the prior is universally agreed. -
Oh I doubt there will only be 2 skus, but I was hoping that at least one of the ones at launch would have 256gb ssd.
I have a feeling that the next round of skus will be Ivy Bridge ones, which means we'll have to wait a bit. Which is unfortunate, because that'll probably put them in direct competition with the refreshed 15" Macbook Air. -
I noticed the Ivy for ulv cpu's have the same wattage as the current sandybridge, so would there really be any battery savings? The cpu's are slightly faster, but doesn't look like much.
-
That is TDP, an arbitrary value that does not reflect the real power used. It is a guide for manufacturers' thermal design. There will be power savings.
-
Noticed this very interesting piece of information.
Samsung is releasing a Series 7 Gaming laptop with IVY BRIDGE.
It's up for pre-order now.
It that laptop is shipping soon with Ivy Bridge, shouldn't that mean that the
Samsung Series 9 2012 model will ship with Ivy Bridge too since it's their flagship Model?
I really. really hope so.
A series 9 with Ivy Bridge right from the start would be my perfect laptop.

Ivy Bridge would be too nice to come true...
Samsungs Spec-Page says: Gpu: HD3000 --> Sandy Bridge =( -
I'm still looking forward to seeing this Series 9, but I saw the 14" Series 5 today at BestBuy and liked it very much.
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
I saw one yesterday. I agree, very nice looking. -
I see today that JR has the 15-inch up for pre-order. CDW also has it listed. Amazon has the 13-inch "Out of stock", but you will be notified when they have it in.
However, all of them only show 128 GB SSD, not the 256 GB. Nor are there any options for an i7, just the i5.
Does anyone know of some later updates? -
Speaking of places to preorder, does anyone know the best place for samsung?
I ordered from JR pretty much on day 1 but that don't mean a thing if they don't get it right away.
Example: Amazon has listed the refreshed 7 series as 1-2 months, but tigerdirect/circuitcity have been selling it for a week now. -
About other skus, I contacted Samsung three times asking questions in various manners trying to find out if and when they'd have this with a bigger ssd. They wouldn't say.
I think I said this upthread, but I do think they're going to tie other skus to ivy bridge, so bigger SSD + ivy bridge for a top-shelf item.
Interestingly, if you look at how they priced last year's Series 9, you'd expect a 256gb ssd alone to be roughly $300 more than the comparable 128ssd. mSATA ssd's haven't really been falling that much.
So I would think a 15" 256gb ssd + IB is going to be 1999 at minimum. Which makes me want to wait for Apple's refreshed 15" Air/Pro, because with the 256gb Air at 1599 right now, I suspect they could move all the prices down a notch and sell the 15" at that price point. Which would really take the legs out from under Samsung.
Just speculation though. -
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
Samsung is crazy to hold back the 256GB SKU if they have one coming.
If Apple really delivers a 15" MBA with a high res screen at a reasonable cost, it will be an important market leader. -
I'm afraid to know what it might cost.
After giving it some thought, I'm just not sure I want to live with 128GBs, and 256GB will likely be too expensive to make sense (heck, it's just a computer). So I'm not sure if I really "need" to have SSD. But, we'll see. I still think this 15" Series 9 could be near perfection, if not for the cost.
Actually, those hybrid drives look pretty interesting. Quick start-up and resume (which is all I really want and need) yet tons of storage. To be honest, I kinda wish the Series 9 came with that option. It sure would make it more affordable! -
I'm just getting out of the mindset that I need that much storage on a device. I don't. To get ready for this, I set up a NAS at home and I'm using dropbox and other things for files that need to be shared/accessed remotely.
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
Agreed. I have started looking much more closely at what needs to be offline and on local storage with me and my current portable. Part of the reason is cost. The other reason is having too many devices. Carrying around your entire picture, music and video collection gets silly.
As for the cost of the Series 9 machines, it's almost like "If you have to ask what the price is, you can't afford it" level. The same is true for some of the Macs. They aren't priced for everyone. Neither are Porsches. -
Perhaps you're right. Still a difficult concept to let go of though (for me) after all these years.
Well yeah, but there's also "Sure, I can afford it, but do I really need it?"
We'll see... -
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
In my case there's the smartphone, slate, and multiple notebook computers for work and personal. Data management has become an interesting challenge.
The problem is really 128GB. That is just too small. 160 is actually about perfect for me. It's plenty for the OS, apps, overhead from swap files and such, personal data, and some head room. I don't really need 256GB but the SSD makers don't really care what I NEED.
As for wants versus needs, I NEED a slim 15". Samsung has already shown it is possible. If the Apple rumors are true, other options will be on the horizon soon. Everyone else will play catch up. -
All good points. I just picked up a 500GB HDD Thinkpad Edge to tide me over, with a 60GB SSD for booting to tide me over until I can see exactly what the next Macbook is going to look like.
If I'm going to spend 1500, I'd rather spend 1800 or 2000 to get exactly what I want, then to be pissed off that I'm stuck with say 100 GB usable space. My music collection's already at 177GB and I don't want to have to pick and choose what's on there. And having to buy an external HD to carry around with me sort of defeats the whole purpose. -
Samsung came out of the CES show (and posted on its own website) that the new Series 9 would be sporting a new luxury leather Valextra case.
Samsung Unveils Latest Innovation in Premium Notebooks with Second-Generation Series 9
But when I look at JR's site, for example Samsung NP900X4B-A02US Series 9 15" Notebook PC - Titan Silver in PC Notebook Computers | JR.com
there is absolutely no mention of it. Does anyone know about it? I checked out the leather goods at Valextra, and if it were true, would greatly enhance the higher $$$ for this 15" notebook. (It was reported that it would also go along with 13" too.) -
I"m in the same boat....its so hard to justify spending that kind of money for 128GB. To me its not really fair to the consumer. I still want the Series 9. But my conscience is telling me not to pull the trigger. I checked out the Series 7 at Best Buy and you get way more for your money and its a pretty sleek machine with specs that rival if not out perform anything in its class...and its $500 cheaper than the Series 9. Its not an ultrabook but its pretty lean. So I think i'm going to buy it this weekend. I asked a Best Buy rep when they'll get the Series 9 and she gave me a blank look and didn't even know what i was talking about. Geek Squad my a$$. I hope that when i do see the Series 9 on the shelves that i remain strong and not covet
-
Have you seen the new 14" Samsung Series 5? If not, you might wanna take a look. Pretty darn impressive.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his a$$, nor his Series 9, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
-
looks to be this, doesn't look much different styling-wise (if at all) from their standard premier attache
it could easily cost more than the samsung though
-
Yeah that case is hot as hell.
I'd like to pick up both, but I need those extra GBs. Samsung is being a major tease. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I might be wrong, but isn't it only 1366 x 768? A 1600 x 900 panel option would put it in a sector where there is much less competition. It might take a few sales away from the S9, but I don't think I'm unique in thinking that 13" is a bit small and 15" is a bit big.

+1
Great thought~

Wow! Thanks for sharing! That is the first image I have seen - but have to say the obvious: this is a huge (depth -wise) freakin' case!
Attractive, but huge!
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
Take a look at the actual dimensions of the 15" when the are finally released. Supposedly the 15" is the size of a 14" notebook (width and depth) but because they use the thin bezel design they are able to get the 15" 1600x900 screen in there.
Drool. Covet.
-
You're right about the resolution difference. But the BestBuy version of the Series 5 is 14" not 13", so it's actually a 14.1" screen vs 15.0" for the Series 9.
Regardless, if he wants the S9 but plans on buying the Series 7 from BestBuy to save money and get a larger hard drive (etc) I would at least take a look at the 14" Series 5 at BestBuy *first* before buying the Series 7. -
The design language is impressive this gen. Hope they don't tweak too much.
