How does the 15inch screen compares to the new ENVY IPS screen, also the 15inch doesn't seem to have to an SD/Card slot?
-
I just bought a Macbook Air a little over 2 weeks ago and I just saw these.
I WANT. I was never a big fan of the old design.
for the 15 inch:
Matte body, 2 USB 3.0 ports, great 15 in 1600x900 display weighing 3.5 lbs...
drool... -
yes under the flap theres a sd slot. -
Are there any pictures of this 15" version anywhere?
Also, anyone know the dimensions of the 15" version?
Thanks... -
-
YES! It's got dedicated Home and End keys! I am VERY happy to see that, as I really really like having those keys! I do wish it had actual left & right buttons on the trackpad, but I guess we can't have everything, right? I'm still looking for the dimensions of this 15" model, but I'll find 'em.
It's a bit pricey (okay, more than just a bit) but maybe the price will drop after it's released.
Funny, I started this thread because I really liked what I saw in the Series 9, but then ended up not getting it for various reasons. Who knows... maybe I'll end up getting a Series 9 after all !!!

While they may say "15" screen in 14 chassis", were I to put a 15" screen into my lenovo T420s then bezels each side of the display would be about 2mm wide. The photos suggest more like 10mm wide. This puts the width of the 15" S9 at around 14.25" or 360mm.
John -
Thanks. That's a tad larger than I was hoping for, but oh well. 3.5 lbs on a 15"er is still VERY nice!
-
Don't like the look of the power adapter. Looks like Samsung have not fixed that problem yet. A Samsung USA technician told me that's the most common repair that's being done on Series 9 models...
-
As the new 15" models have Aluminum bottoms (rather than Duralumin), I wonder if new 13.3" models will have Aluminum bottoms too? You might be able to purchase one if they do. That would definitely help WiFi. -

I would be surprised if that material change (if it is a real change and not just some different words) will fix the WiFi problem. Duralumin is an aluminium alloy, so not much different. They are both conductive metals and likely to have the same effect on WiFi signals. I would hope that Samsung have rethought the antennae location.

FYI,
The second gen 15" thread is at http://forum.notebookreview.com/samsung/637717-samsung-15-series-9-np900x4b-thread.html. -
I would bet that they DID fix it. But I would also bet that they won't say a word about it -- otherwise they'd be admitting the problem (which they obviously aren't willing to do).
-
A video reviewer said that the bottom is aluminum rather Duralumin (so it's very likely that change was made). Don't a lot of laptops have aluminum casings and their WiFi is fine? I think it was just the Duralumin variant.
As far as location goes, there was nothing wrong with the location in the case (compared to other laptops). If they continue to have 3*3 with 3rd antenna inside LCD it should be good enough. -
Oops, never mind! (darn iPhone)

Few questions?
Is the keyboard back-lit?
Can I configure the 15inch for a 500GB HDD?
if so I am so going return the ENVY..this looks sexy.. -
Backlight: Yes, its suppose to have a funky (read:not white) color.
HDD: no clue.
Yeah I'm thinking about selling my Air when in comes out in Feb. -
Here's the new 15" Series 9 in silver:
-
Looks eerily similar to the Series 7 15.0"
-
It's a different color, right? Isn't the 7 sort of bronze or light brownish?
-
Looks the same colour if you put the Series 7 under such a bright light. But the Series 7 has a plastic palmrest.
-
I see. The Series 7 is a nice looking machine. I like it a lot.
-
Hi,
I can't seem to get the ethernet adapter to work properly. For some reason windows 7 doesn't reconize that it is connected to the internet. Any way to solve this? Additional software? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Check that the adaptor is listed in Device Manager under Network Adaptors. It is normally on unless it has been disabled.
Did you try another cable? Also look in the socket to make sure that the metal contacts are OK.

Guys...
I'm setting up a new Series 9 over here in the UK with a standard Ent edition of Windows 7 and I've (like I've always done) freshly clean installed... wiping out the restore partition as I'd expect Samsung to have the drivers etc.
Issues:
- Initially went for Anytime WIn 7 Pro Upgrade, "This version of Windows cannot be updated by this method'. What?
- Can't even FIND the machine on the UK support section/Drivers
- Wi-fi driver... Tried both from the U.S. page? Still not working
- Samsung software: WI-Fi off, on, keyboard light etc. Can't find it in the software section
I called the support section of Samsung as guided by the web portal and... they've no idea. Fantastic.
Could any kind chap point me in the direct of some sanity? (I've already suffered two weeks of calls trying to get an imported Samsung 7 slate fixed due to the screen lift issue) Oh well. Thanks -

I agree that doing to the downloads section of the website doesn't work properly. Go to the Products and work from there to get here. NP900X3A downloads.

The message is correct. You cannot upgrade Windows 7 Enterprise with Anytime Upgrade. Enterprise already has all features. There is nothing to upgrade to. Activation is different from upgrade. If you are trying to activate, Ent uses a key management server. You can use the Microsoft public KMS assuming you have a legit MAK key. -
I tried to upgrade from Home premium to Professional. After that failed I defaulted to our Ent software
-
Found it for you. Seems that yours may have an Atheros card. Support for NP900X3A
-
I could kiss you! Thank you SO VERY MUCH for that! Intel proset
Another question: Job accomplished but I still can't find the central software that manages turning off/tuning things like wi-fi/bluetooth/speed/other settings. Which one is it?
I'm using Windows mobility center so that will do for now
My fav point in this arrived from installing the update service which informed me that I already had the most up-to date drivers. At that point no (other than lan) drivers had been installed. Nice -
S9 does not have Easy Settings or the like.
-
Found it. Duh. It was installed along with one of the other applications and launched by pressing Fn+F1. All resolved, all working, all fantastic. Phew.
Thank you to everyone that replied and added information. I do appreciate it and would send you all choccy if I had any.
-
What? Never heard of a NP900X3A with Atheros cards. They've only had Broadcom, Intel 6230 and Intel 6300.
-
I looked at the drivers page, listed Wireless LAN, ATHEROS. Since he was talking about how the US Intel and Broadcom drivers don't work on the other thread, I thought his probably had an atheros.
-
Oh, OK. I found that Samsung USA does a really poor job of maintaining their drivers' pages. The Canadian and South Korean (of course) pages seemed to have more up-to-date versions.
-
I just install the Samsung Update software... and do manual driver updates every once in a while... they have all the drivers in there, both Broadcom and Intel drivers.
-
Did that... "All your drivers are up to date"... I had none installed other than lan.
-
The software manager is sort of like a list of drivers.
Oh and auspicious post number 666 now that the Chinese New Year is approaching. -
I upgraded the wireless card inside my series 9 laptop, does anyone know what the original card is called. I would like to sell it on eBay since it's been sitting around my apartment.
-
Depends. It's either the
1. "Broadcom 4324A-BRCM1048 802.11b/g/n WLAN+BT PCI-E Mini Card" or the
2. "Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 dual-stream (2x2), dual-band, 802.11a/g/n Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth adapter" that you removed.
I'm assuming that you do not have one of the new Series 9 that have the Intel 6300 which have 3 antennae. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I always keep the original components until the warranty has expired. The warranty is for the hardware supplied by Samsung. The make of the WiFi adaptor is probably given on the label on the box.
John -
This. If there's any replacement or recall exercise, you are pretty much screwed if the original Samsung supplied components are missing,
-
Does Samsung need my original sales receipt or can they just do my RMA through the serial number?
Thanks. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
This may depend on whether the purchase has been registered in Samsung's system.
John -
Instead of buying another Samsung with the Intel 6300 replacing the Broadcom I bought an USB wireless card. Netgear WNA1100 with a little optional stand (use it).
So now in the kitchen where I previously had shaky 0-0,5 Mbit/s I now have 16 Mbit/s rock solid download.
I noticed that if I just put the USB card in flat it is just a tiny bit better than the built in Broadcom card. However if I use the wire and the little USB stand the connection dramatically improves. I guess that shows how important the third antenna in the display would be in a way? -
My touchpad died and the service center replace it (as well as the keyboard). Now I no longer have a Synaptics touchpad, but an Elan touchpad, with has more limited functionality. Does anyone understand why?
-
Hi Guys,
I've had the Series 9 for about a month and I like it very much. Here's a trick you may find useful. You can increase your storage by up to 32gb via the MicroSD slot (obviously). You may have noticed that the connector panel will not close if there is an SD card in the slot, or that if it does close it ejects the card. If you shorten the height of the SD Card by taking some of the plastic casing off with a nail file (1mm or less- a very little bit) you can get the access door to close and have instantly increased capacity. Be careful not to remove too much material, just do a few scrapes at a time and test the card for proper clearance until you can close the door properly. I have to push the card in a little bit while closing the access door, but the spring tension in the slot allows for some wiggle room without ejecting. -
Thanks for the great idea on MicroSD.
-
Ok so I've tried searching this thread and doing some google search as well but I can't find any help.
The touchpad multitouch does not work on my Samsung Series 9 purchased from Best Buy.
I go to control panel and mouse settings and where the gestures should be listed it is just blank. When I go to settings for Synaptics ps/2 port touchpad it has no gestures listed.
It has buttons listed which I can go to settings and change the actions that is all.
Drivers are up to date. Is this something I can fix or a defect?
Thanks.
**edit**
Perhaps I could download this:
http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers
Still weird that it didn't come preinstalled on the system though. -
Hi all,
I have this specific problem, hope somebody could help:
I have the NP900X3A, and got a Logitech K750 solar wireless keyboard, and a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse. Both use the unifying receiver. Mouse works flawlessly.
Here's the problem: when the keyboard sits idle for some time, it stops working, doesn't matter which key I push, the only way to bring it back to life is turning it off then back on. And when I do, it acts as if the "0" (alphanumeric area) is stuck (like "00000000000...")
also, some keys don't work at all (alphanumeric "0", capital "a" and "g")
I've tried the unifying receiver in both USB ports with the same results. I've also tried the same keyboard/receiver with other computers and it doesn't give me these errors.
Does someone have had similar problems? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
