Well, no one has mentioned it here yet and I am seriously considering buying one of these:

    http://www.samsung.com/au/products/notebookpcs/notebookpcs/np_m50.asp

It has everything I need and more, and falls in my price range.
    Main features:

    Centrino M 2Ghz
    1GB RAM
    17" WXGA+ Nvidia Go 6600
    80Gb 5.4k SATA HD
    3 year warranty

    And all for about US$2400
    (australian prices = http://www.shopbot.com.au/p-16579.html)

This looks 'almost' too good, am I missing something? I want a laptop for music and audio production, I have a fire wire audio interface (that side is taken care of) so I just need a solid stable machine that I can take to the occasional gig.

I know everyone will have their own opinion, but what's the samsung 'build quality' compared to say other brands like sony, IBM, Asus?

I don't want to 'skimp' and regret it later on, I was originaly looking at a Vaio but this lappy has everything I need without the 'brand price' of sony, but still doesn't seem "cheap" on quality.

Any thoughts or comments appreciated :)

from specs point of view and aesthetics, I would say go for it. There's no quite such vaio that has the same slim build as the Samsung in its lineup-correct me if I'm wrong. Furthermore, Samsung screen is just gorgeous, on par with those famed Sony Xbrite, Fujitsu , etc
Samsung is sexy - yes u do pay abit more for the brand and design, but it's worth it IMO.

    1400 £ I think?!

I bought Samsung M50 740 (1,73GHz) for 1600€ in Germany ( www.hoh.de) I think that German's shops have the best prices of Samsung laptops and other models too. Only problem for peapole who use english language is a keyboard.

hello guys, you have found my pictures on forum.hardware.fr !!! .
Indeed i have bought this notebook in france (iam french) for 1400€ VAT in a market named "Planete Saturn" also named Mediamarkt in Belgium. it was a special offer, normally it costs 1600€ VAT. Now i am going to buy a warranty extension.

I'm very happy it's a very good machine, and i like its silence :D contrary to my old asus W3v :s

    bye

    @unotouch

Planete Saturn is also called only Saturn. MediaMarkt is a different chain although the same company holds both.

Hi there, I also thought of buying a M50, but now the Core Duo is present and I wanna have one. Are there any rumours about a follower to the M50?

Got my M50 today, must say nniiccee!!!. My first laptop by the way. Have to thank everyone at this site for their input to this site has been very informative (only found it 3 weeks ago and have been purusing it non stop).

Was going to buy a Toshiba but after having a look at them found them to 'plasticy' for my likes.

Now have to load it up with my stuff and see how it goes!!!

-Must say actualy feels quite solid not much flex at all (think of Toshibas Quosimo solid), especially when comparing to a Toshiba M60.

-Screen is a glossy type with a native res of 1440 x 900 and i love it. You can see a slight bit of light leakage on win XP start up screen (where its black)but will keep an eye on it,doesnt bother me much though.

-Yep its nice and light coming in at 3kg!

-Nice and quiet except a bit of noise when a disk starts up but nothing to be worried about expect that to be normal of disk drives.

please note this model didnt come with a 80gb 7200 rpm drive it was a 5400rpm drive im going to have a word to them about this (false advertising).

Have not done any benchies yet may do in a week or so have to fly back to work tommorrow.hope this helps.
