Hi, I tried to install an Intel 4965 card taken from a dell xps m1300, but with no success. I mean, it's not a driver trouble because the card isn't either identified as "new hardware" in win xp. Same behavior using a linux live distro..

Topper, have you managed to change your wifi card with another one?

When I had my NC10 I was able to switch out the wifi card for an Intel Wifi Link 5300 with no problems. It was a drastic improvement on the stock card. The only catch is to get the full 300mbps throughput (theoretical) you need to get a third antenna and install it with the card. If you are interested I can show you where I got mine.

I finally received my NC10 and installed everything and for me the most difficult thing getting used to is not the touchpad (which I increased the speed and practically removed the horizontal scrolling ranges) but the lack of pixels for resolution. Everything is so big relative to the screen size. On the desktop, the icons are so big. I was able to change their size from 32 by 32 to 24 by 24 under the display settings, appearance tab, advanced, which makes the desktop look much better.

I installed IE7 and can surf the web with full screen which removes the title bar, menu bar and status bar. With IE7 you can also change the zoom level of the window which I tried to change to 90% (with a pinch) however, I have noticed that the area to click on an item, doesn't always line up horizontally on the item, but often the item next to it, so that doesn't work well. I instead reduced the text size to smallest, which is better, but images and windows within the webpage don't get any smaller so it's not perfect. (With 90% zoom level everything gets smaller, but like I said, the click areas don't line up with the items.) The microsoft clear type really helps with viewing the smaller fonts.

For opening regular windows, the title bar, menu bar, and status bar are so large. Does anyone know of a way to make them smaller. Under windows display properties, and appearance, it would be nice if there was a setting for font size smaller than "normal" because with normal everything still seems large. Does anyone know any tricks for this? Also any tweaks for making the taskbar a little narrower?

A few problems I have noticed are if an application ever stops responding and I have to force cancel it with "end program" and windows creates an error report, I see in the task manager an item called "dumprep", using like 20-30% cpu and it sits there for over 20 minutes, tieing up the CPU until the error report is finally generated. Has anyone else noticed this?

Last thing I've noticed is that when I click on a webpage like the New York Times, after the webpage comes up, it takes about 20 seconds before I can really get control to scroll around. The page displays in like 1 second, but it takes 20 seconds for me to be able to scroll around. Does anyone notice any problems like that? And does anyone have a clue why this might be happening? I did install norton internet security 2009 on it, so maybe it is causing that.

Oh, and I also hear that strang, faint popping sound from time to time from the PC that other people have also reported. It sounds like a bubble popping or something. Anyone know what that sound is?

wstt2, I suggest that you go check out sammynetbook.com forums. There is tons of good information there, it seems the NC10 has a fairly strong community.
I use firefox 3 and when I go to the NYtimes website I can start scrolling around within the first second or two. It takes about 5 seconds to fully load everything, but I can still scroll around.
If you are still having trouble with the touchpad, check out the touchpad thread in the sammynetbook forums.
I am usually accustomed to using a mouse, and I was nervous to pull the trigger on an NC10 after reading about the small touchpad. After receiving it, and doing some simple tweaking I find it to be excellent, and have no problems at all navigating around. I use the 2 finger scroll mod which can be found here http://www.sammynetbook.com/plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?926.0 and it really helps.
    Good Luck with your NC10

would UK's NC10's happen to have the korean keyboards on them?

(quite possibly the most foolish question ever, but i know that Korea exports to UK often when they don't to US).

personally, being korean, i think it'd be mighty cool to have a korean keyboard instead of $5 stickers that i need to buy at the shops in my neighborhood. even if i did, i'd totally miss out on the anti bacterial nanowhatever.

btw, I'm used to Vista by now, and prefer it over XP. are there people who installed vista on their nc10? I tried the search function, but vista as well as nc10 seem to be too common to get a good result. I wouldnt mind longer booting time, as I'd use suspend to disc anyways. but are there drivers and samsung software for Vista, and does everything work well?
if anybody knows, or knows the post/thread, I'd be really glad if you could link me or give feedback. thx

I put Vista on NC10 and now I am running windows 7 on it.
All softwares work as they did in vista. I have to get a few drivers manually for vista/7. If you're missing drivers, let me know which ones I can point you to download site.

I can confirm Cs3 to be working flawlessly and with a few tweaks, it runs somewhat smoothly if you keep saving after every changes.

The NC10 screen is kinda small for it... for instance, the "Save for web" dialog is too tall for that screen. Other than that, it's fine for small things.

You can use a higher resolution with an external monitor or, if you set the internal display to a higher resolution then the display will scroll.

The basic problem with the more powerful software packages is that all the menus and toolbars take up space and leave you less room to display whatever you are working on.

You can't expect a 1.6ghz single core CPU to handle 30 pictures with 2-3filters each and 300undo steps saved.

I am based in the UK and have just purchased a white and blue NC10, on the blue model keyboard the F7 & F8 keys are slightly a different colour blue to the remainder of the keyboard. Is this a flaw or has Samsung tried to highlight visually these two keys only, as the white version does not have any different coloured/shade keys ?

    Regards
    Happy but not yet convinced..

The slightly different colour of the F7 and F8 keys is by design. I've seen it on several other Samsung notebooks but I haven't yet figured out the reason.

i have discovered that the save for web dialogue window on CS3 is resizable.

it's resizable on CS4 as well, but on CS3, you can get it smaller. small enough to fit NC10's resolution limit.

i don't like cs4. cs3, i've had problems with dreamweaver crashing on my ftp constantly.

so if i can, i wanna try and get cs2 or cs1 to see if i can fit it into NC10's resolution..

Don't get over-excited by the higher capacity battery and the 9 hours claim.

It's 5900mAh compared with the normal 5200mAh. On my calculation that's about 13% which, if you get 7 hours with the normal battery, would add another hour.

Ugh! I agree. The matte finish screen was a huge distinction for the NC10, and frankly, one of its best selling features. I noticed the description says "anti-reflection gloss coating display". Isn't that an oxymoron? It would be remarkable to see a glossy screen that isn't, well, glossy...??

See the attached. It definitely supports the devices in the top part of the list.

There are those in-between finishes, but personally I prefer a bright matte display. Glossy is cheaper to manufacture because there is no anti-glare coating.

Thank you for the info. I also read your own excellent review; lots of good information there and very well done.

I'm planning to purchase one of Samsung's offerings. They've put together a very good product that meets most of my criteria; certainly the best of the current offerings in the market. I was ready to purchase a week ago before I read about the soon to be available NC10-11PBK offered through Amazon.

The pro's for the 11PBK are the larger capacity battery and a better designed touchpad. But since it's not available yet, there's no chance to inspect/review the improvements. The downside for me on the 11PBK is the glossy screen. The matte finish of the current NC10 is a huge selling point for me, but I don't know if I can live with that miniturized touch pad. The battery life on the current NC10 is already excellent, so I'm not sure the new higher capacity battery is any big deal.

So it comes down to a trade off between the improved touch pad design of the new system, or the matte finish display of the current offering. Are there other considerations I should think about? (obviously the waiting-for-who-knows-how-long factor for Amazon, and not knowing when it will be available, if ever, is a consideration). Decisions, decisions....

    Any thoughts on this?

    Cheers,
    K

If I were you I'd wait to see just how much bigger this touch pad really is. I've removed the pinch and slide to scroll feature from mine and installed TwoFingerScroll, and its very responsive for me, even with a 3-finger rightclick. And I adore the matte screen. Doesn't Samsung read any forums? How do we give them feedback?

I finally to to try NC10 today, as it was just released here, and I was a bit disappointed with the touchpad. I had read it was small, but I never realized it'd be THAT small. Adding insult to injury, the touchpad was fairly unresponsive compared to the EEE PC 1000H standing next to it, even at the maximum speed setting. It is definitely a deal breaker for me (shame, since it is such a good netbook otherwise!)

Hmm. This is a concern of mine too. I'm not sure I'll like the touchpad on the 'old' NC10 (I can't find one around here to play with) and there's obviously no way to test the new NC10 SE.

I did get to try the touchpad on the 1000H and I liked it very much. In fact, I was pretty happy with the 1000H overall. To be honest, the only reason I'm still considering the Samsung is because it's slightly lighter (I was hoping to keep this under 3 lbs) and smaller -- less "chunky", for lack of a better term.

The only thing I had against the 1000H's touchpad was the buttons - they were a bit too stiff and too noisy. Although I'd rather take that than the small touchpad of the NC10. It is just irritating that they can't get such a minor thing right :)

The only reason I'm still considering NC10 is the battery life. The EEE PC 1000HE is coming soon (I hope) with improved battery life (in a real world test by Laptop Magazine, it beat NC10 by more than half an hour). Then there's the very promising NC10SE, which I fear won't be available here (Sweden) for a long while since the original NC10 was just released.

    Hi,
I got my brand new NC 10 and I am very happy ;-)

I have made 2 partitions using the samsund recovery manager but now I want to make a 3rd one to install windows 7

I have tried Partition Magic which give errors on a partition table and afterwards I have installed EASEUS which first give a blue screen of death on opening the program and after a reboot tells me I have a bad disk ?

According to disk management in Win XP everything is OK
I have the recovery, the C: and the D: and they are all healthy?

Anyone know how to resolve this?

    1. Trusted Reviews have looked at the 1000HE. That bigger battery does add to the weight.

Is that Partition Magic recent? Perhaps it can't recognise the Samsung recovery partition, which uses some strange format. I used to use Partition Magic but migrated to Acronis Disk Director which seems to be more versatile.

Wow... that's a pretty big difference. I was starting to lean towards the 1000HE (due to the price difference) but now I'm not sure.

Unfortunatly i had to delete all partitions, even restore.
    Right now i have 3 partitions: 50, 70 and 6gb.
I was thinking 6gb is for recovery.
Now i am trying to install Samsung Recovery Solution, but
get message "There is not Samsung Recovery area on your nard drive,
    setup will be cancelled"
    Can anybody help me, please?

Get the NC10 if you want the most premium netbook. Get the EEE or AAOAOAO if you want something cheaper. Nothing more to be said really.
