If I recall correctly correctly, the Samsung recovery partition which is used for the initial backup uses a special format and is placed at a particular location (either start or end) on the HDD.

However, I thought the absence of that partition would not prevent SRS being used to create user backups of C: on D:.

I can not install SRS, it looks for this particular location and refuses to install.
Also, i can not make backup with any backup software, i get bad sectors on my HDD.
What Acronis says about SRS partition?
I tried to change format of the partition to 0x12 and on the end of the HDD.
Do i have to try another location?

I think that is already covered in the NC20 thread.

    This is the NC10 thread.

Hey guys, I'm not sure if I'll want or need the Special Edition NC10. And I'm hoping the price will drop on the regular NC10.

Question: just how bad is the trackpad, really? I've read lots of comments from users saying they don't like it, so I'm a bit concerned. Is it really that bad? I can't find an NC10 anywhere so I can't try it myself.

P.S. -- before anyone says it, yes, I know that I can use a mouse :) but there are lots of times I'll want to use the trackpad.

I had a AAO 9" and Mini-Note before this, and trackpad is better than both of them.

the trackpad is small, but of good quality, good/sensitive/fast response. I "tweaked" two things and now it's perfectly usable: increased the pointer speed (took me an hour or so to get used to it) and disabled the scroll bar on the right side and installed two-finger-scroll - which enables you to scroll when you put two fingers on the touchpad (multitouch), you get more space. I wouldn't call the trackpad bad. I dont mind using it at all.

whenever i close the lid to my nc10 (go standby) and reopen it... the bluetooth disables itself somehow and i can't reload it... which causes my bluetooth mouse to not work until i reboot the computer...

any solutions? (i'm using Vista, updated to samsung provided bluetooth drivers).

The trackpad isn't a problem at high sensitivity. You can make a sweep across the screen with a finger movement, as all netbooks would allow as well. I found a small keyboard (like on my AAO) more troublesome and annoying to me, unless you really love hitting backspace or making typos and holding left arrow back to each letter to correct each mistake. Very annoying to me, I couldn't get used to it, especially when writing reports. Of course it felt normal when I had the AAO, it's only in comparison that I realized it was smaller. But I would subscribe that not everyone has the same needs and perhaps I have been spoiled by the NC10's large keyboard.

I've run 1440 x 900 from the NC10. I would surprised if it can't handle 1680 x 1050. The GMA950 may be a couple of generations old, but 1680 x 1050 was around when it came out. I've just looked in Intel datasheet 320436 (for the Intel® Atom™ Processor N270 and Mobile Intel® 945GSE Express Chipset) which states
However, it would be useful if an NC10 owner with a big external monitor can confirm.

Perhaps that reviewer didn't realise that it is necessary to either extend the desktop onto the external monitor or set the external monitor as the primary display and turn off the internal display.

I have run mine on my 32 inch wide screen TV with no probs, I forget what resolution I ran it at now but it took a bit of experimentation to get the image to fill the whole screen. I was ultimately impressed by running iPlayer in high res mode on a large TV. NC10 handled it fine :)!

Thanks for that link - I hadn't spotted that before. lol how many girly models do they need - or maybe that actually already takes into account the pink model! I was mildly amused by the increased number of female nicks being registered on my site just after valentines day :D :D!!

Oh wait, just spotted someone has linked the same story on my forum but from liliputing - am off to read that :D!

Is that a sneaky amazon affiliate link ;)? I have noticed 2 pre-orders for this in my associates account actually so some people are pre-ordering it! I do not know any more info though above what Amazon have said. I did email Amazon.co.uk to ask about whether they would release the battery individually or supply it in the UK. I have not got a satisfactory response yet.

I just received the asus 1000HE. It has similar specs to the nc10 special edition but costs $150 less. Good luck finding one in stock though.

No matter which netbook you get, you have to get one with epic battery life. To me, this is the killer app for these things. I'm currently looking for a new cell hpone so I can tether.

True. Personally I'd like to hear from someone that has seen or used both (NC10 and 1000HE) for a hands-on comparison.

But you're right, the Asus pricing is hard to ignore.

I bet the new Asus will put some pressure on the Sammy's price - finally there's a rival with some advantages and no dealbreakers, at least not that I've heard of. Better battery life, (theoretically) improved processor, significantly cheaper, and on this one they improved their keyboard and made it a matte screen...

Yep. To tell the truth, though... I'm starting to wonder if the 1000HE might be the better unit -- even if Samsung does drop the price of the NC10.

I think it depends on what matters most to you - if the touchpad size and longest battery life possible matter a lot, then it probably is the better machine. Also, if you like chiclet-style keyboards, that's a plus for the Asus.

I'm not too concerned about the touchpad, and while the 1000he has longer battery life, the Sammy's is pretty exceptional already and should be more than enough for me (not to mention the improvement over the battery in my 5ish-year-old Dell Inspiron!). Plus I trust Samsung's quality on lcds, I like the slightly smaller, light-weight design, and I want a matte finish on the case (I ordered the white) - fingerprint smudges cheapen the look and would annoy the heck out of me.

I think the NC10 is still a better machine, but not by as much of a margin. And I would even consider a 1000he now that they fixed the Shift key.

(The weight is still terrible though - are they making it out of iron?)

I agree that smaller and lighter is better. It's why I'm still holding out for the NC10. But it's not like the 1000HE is THAT much larger or heavier than the NC10.

    Yeah it's not.

Anyways, people were buying the 1002HA for 499$, about the same price as the NC10 2 months back. The 1002HA has a small keyboard, bad right shift key, and 3-4 hours of battery life. So you'd wonder why people buy it but it has a decent form factor, similar to the NC10. People are willing to pay for form factor and lightweight, as the materials get cheaper when it is bulkier. I think a lot of people have in mind exactly how they want their netbook to be, light weight, long battery life etc. I've talked to some people that won't accept something that encroaches that of a full laptop territory, including screen size. You just need to find what you want out of it. The 1000HE has also done a really good job on marketing, like Acer, seeing the buzz around it. Samsung seems to take a different approach. They seem to have good demand for their products as they couldn't keep up with the NC10 stock, but they rely more on good reviews than mass marketing.

The 1000ha was 3.2 lbs and the 1000he is even heavier, while the NC10 is about 2.8lbs. That's a noticeable difference to me.

Last year Samsung announced that they needed to increase their notebook production in order to be sustainable. They must be a long way towards meeting this objective with the starting of sales in North America (previously unable to do so because of an agreement with Dell who sold the Samsung-made X1).

However, I can see that they should be cautious about ramping up capacity in in their factory at the time when the overall market may be shrinking. Providing a good product at a fair price and not spending money on advertising seems a sensible course of action.

That's surprising, I always thought Samsung was native to the notebook market since they are such a big brand name. I mean I thought they won so many innovation awards at CES?

If you live in the Silicon Valley (CA) there's a store that has all netbooks for display, as I just went there, they have the 1000HE available.

The 1000HE is practically the same as the 1000HA. Aesthetically they look spot on identical. The 1000HA already had long battery life (rated 7 hours?) and was cheaper though, so if you happen to own a 1000HA I would not feel bad. The difference is the keyboard. The 1000HE has a really tiny keyboard, smaller than the Acer Aspire One. The only thing that might irk me is the fact that people will buy this netbook and generalize how all netbooks are tiny and unfit for long typing sessions, when I've been so busy already correcting people how large the NC10 and HP keyboards are.

They didn't have the NC10 in stock at the moment to compare as they keep selling out, but I've already compared the NC10 with the 1000HA at the store before, so I wouldn't expect anything different. If you live around here, you can check it out too.

www.imgburn.com is free, works perfect and is bloatware free unlike Nero.

edit: I had Daemon Tools installed before IMGBurn, I don't know how it reacts if you have no optical drives present at all.

Haha, there's a chance the price might drop but I wouldn't be so sure. I think the only reason it dropped in the first place was in preparation for the NC20. Plus the 3 year 3 month free battery replacement warranty for US users make it harder for them to drop the price.

If price is a deciding factor if you are on a budget, why not go for an alternative, cheaper netbook. There is no harm in doing that. ;)

But I'll be pulling the trigger within a day or so, so anyone else that's waiting can expect a price drop immediately following my purchase. ;)

Market forces and supply / demand are the key drivers for pricing.

UK pricing on the NC20 seems to be stabilising at about 25% more than the NC10. Competition from other brands will be the main factor affecting NC10 pricing.

Someone on Amazon.com just said that Samsung confirmed that the NC10 Special Edition has a matte screen, not glossy. They described it as an "anti-reflection gloss coating display."

If it really is a matte screen and the price of the regular NC10 doesn't drop soon, I might just wait for the SE version to come out.
