Is the warranty truly 'international'?

Add that to the fact that the price has gone up 40 euro since I bought it, I decided to keep it.
Now I'm just wondering if I should put in the Fujitsu 320GB/5400rpm instead of the Hitachi 5K320 160GB. Any idea on the impact on battery life? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Depending on the power efficiency of the 5k320, the MHZ2320BH could be worse. What does 0.75W mean in real terms? If you can stretch the NC10 to 5.5 hours then the average power drain from a 5500mWH battery is 10W. Increase the power drain to 10.75W and you get 5.11 hours, so you lose nearly 25 minutes. That may be the upper limit if the HDD is genuinely idle for some of the time but, in my experience, the background processes don't give the HDD much time for a snooze.
John -
Thanks for that. I might just stick with the Hitachi then and keep the MHZ2320BH in the enclosure. It might also be better for any possible future waranty claims.

Asked Samsung about my preordered blue NC10 (Amazon) and got the following:
FuelScience
Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics. We appreciate your interest in our newly released line of Notebook PC's.
I apologize for the delay, but we expect Amazon.com to have the blue NC10 by the end of the week. At that time, they will ship out all pre-orders. -
Amazon better not charge me a higher price for my pre-ordered Black when they hopefully ship it in a couple of days!

UK blue nc-10 is now being released mid-December if anybody was waiting for it. I gave up and got the black one and I couldn't be happier with it.
-
So I would like to ask you guys who own the NC10 already ------- how is the touchpad? Have you gotten used to it being small? A new review on Newegg claims the buttons are stiff. How true is that? It was so bad for the reviewer that they claim that they might return it for a refund. It just seemed like such an odd, negative review for such a near perfect netbook which beats out the competition in every other feature -
Just wanted to let people know that Overstock.com has the blue NC10 - mine shipped out today and I ordered it on Sunday.

Hi, thanks for the "link", that's actually my little site so thanks to all those who have come over from here. Please drop me a line if you are looking to buy one and have any questions - happy to help out if I can!
I will just say that I am really loving my new "toy" and have had a totally positive response all round. If anyone is waiting for theirs then I think you will be happy when it arrives! Well I hope so anyway lol!
As to the question above, I found the touchpad a little small vertically to begin with and Im actually new to touchpads altogether so it was a bit of a learning curve. But like the chap above says, it just takes time to get used to it and soon it won't hold you back in general navigation. I do find it a bit tricky when it comes to more intensive mouse work so it would put me off doing eg photo editing. But I found my intellimouse plugged in and worked instantly so if you have to use a mouse from time to time then it's easy!
Cheers. -

Guys:
Don't worry about the Cashback offer on ebay. As long as you got the microsoft banner in the ebay buy it now order details that you got cashback (and it gives you the exact amount)... you are good to go.
I have bought so much crap on ebay with cashback, I literally have over $1600 dollars in my cashback account waiting to be paid out. -
I bought my NC10 on Ebay on Saturday, and the cashback total has yet to hit my Live account - time to email MS or is this typical?

Just upgraded the wifi card to a intel wifi 5300 n. Pretty simple operation and the case was a little easier to open than it looks on youtube. Added a third aerial inside the case and all is good. Linking at 144 rather than 54 under G. This can increase to 300-450 (intel claims not mine although throughput will probably be a tenth lol) when i replace my router with a 3*3 draft n router. Piccies for thos who are interested can be accessed via jezza 101 forum site
-
-
Just a note, just changed a setting in the intel drivers, and the 5300 is now linked at 300mbps which is quite impressive for the belkin draft n router.
for a real world test, i streamed from my main pc via the router to the nc10 an avc encoded avi file with an variable encode rate and 5.1 audio soundtrack. software used was powerdvd 8 hardware decoding enabled. The file started immediately with no noticible buffering and continued to play without dropping a frame. Although got to say blooming impresses on how well the nc10 handled the encoding the atom chip sure has some power behind it
@Mean taking a closer look at the space it looks like a mid socket but there is no hard ware present in the second slot nor behind the sim blanking plate which is a shame. It appeared at first that a modular socket was used but this is not the case. so i may be wrong but it would need some soldering work done and even then not guranteed the bios would recognise it. so it looks like either wifi or 3g. but again im no reall techie at this level so i could be way off the mark -
Just to warn you guys about the MS cash back.
Its one thing to worry about MS recognizing the cash back.
Then you have to worry about cashing it out.
I tried doing my first cash out for $10.43 and its been over 15 days and still nothing.
I emailed them 2 days ago and no response. -
Got my black nc10 last thursday, yay!
Just installed Vista business on it and I've got most things working by d\ling the drivers from the gigabyte M912 site.
Only things not working now are the ethernet card and the fn key software.
Can anyone tell me where to get these drivers -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
At the moment there are only XP drivers on the Samsung download site. The BIOS says XP / Vista so maybe Vista drivers are in the pipeline.
John -
I think it's an atheros card in the NC10. Just google for Vista driver. I had Vista Enterprise working perfectly on my MSI Wind clone (Medion Akoya) because there are now native Vista drivers for everything.
-
What accessories are included with the NC10? Can't find any unboxing online and want to know if it comes with a carrying pouch that the Wind and Eees include.
-
It comes with a "sleeve". It's a very cheap and thin one though. Not as good as Asus or MSI.
-
Amazon has shipped my NC10. Yay.
-
When i installed vista home premium, the xp ethernet drivers worked ok for my device and i got the atheros drivers for the wireless from atheros.cz
-
mmm, I've tried to install the magic keyboard xp driver for the nc10 because the lan card worked using them. Just get 'easyspeedupmanger has stopped working' when I open it, even after reboot.
-
Oh, also, has anyone given a look into the 1002HA? It looks very sleek. I'll be using this for meetings so yes, appearance is somewhat important. -
Just got my nc10 today from an ebay seller.
Just one word - awesome. I have owned an eee 1000h and this thing is *much better*. The battery life on this is insane.
I'm not sure how, but even though both the 1000h and nc10 have the same processors, the nc10 runs much quicker. I can watch youtube and surf 3-4 other sites simultaneously.
The screen brightness on the nc10 is insane!. Even when compared to the alumbook, m1210 and m1330, this one stands out. Moreover the viewing angles are good too.
Keyboard is comparable to the 12" m1210. Touchpad is a wee bit small, but I guess there has to be some compromise for a 400$ laptop.
Overall a great product.
PS: I installed Ubuntu too and it works fine. But I think for the sake of battery/better management, I will stick to Windows XP on this machine -
Someone on Ebuyer pointed out this little factoid:
"Upgrading any of the netbooks components (RAM, HDD, or ODD) will void its warranty. Also, Samsung authorized service centers will not upgrade the components. If a retailer upgrades the netbook for you, it will void the warranty".
It is a little late for me to find this out, as I have already upgraded to 2GB of RAM, but I thought it might be pertinent to relay this info to anyone else who was considering upgrading any of the components.
I honestly think 1GB is probably ample anyway, but if 2GB is the maximum supported, then that is where I am at. -
If you didn't break any seals while upgrading, pop the old 1GB in when sending it in for warranty and they can't deny it unless they can prove that its you who caused it.
-
Is there not a record in the system somewhere of hardware alteration?

In case anyone wonders what the sleeve looks like:

(that one is from X360 but it looks the same)

Erroneous ( edit: In the United States). A manufacturer cannot carte blanche "void your warranty" for a user modification/upgrade. AFAIK, under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a manufacturer cannot void the warranty due to an aftermarket modification unless they can prove/identify that the aftermarket modification caused or contributed to the failure.
The tricky part is that memory is often an integral part of any functioning laptop, so the proof may be dicey. However, I'm sure that would be ameliorated if you could pop the SODIMM into a known working laptop and run something like MemTest86+ ( http://www.memtest.org) or the Microsoft Memory Diagnostic ( http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp) and prove that the memory stick is in fact working properly.
The other consideration may be static shock while upgrading, so kids, please ground yourselves properly. In order to cover yourself, you may want to document when you bought the memory/when you installed it to show that if a failure occurs down the road, that you were successfully using the laptop with the new memory and didn't in fact fry your laptop during the install.
Good luck, folks. (I'm not your lawyers, yadda yadda)

Fuel Science, you are correct, the manual clearly shows how to upgrade the RAM. I am sure the eBuyer factoid is not accurate.

Hello,
Can the NC10 boot from a USB hard disk/USB key? I assume yes (by pressing probably a Fn key at boot time to select the disk).
If the answer is yes, what is the boot speed (USB 2.0, fast, or USB 1.x, very slow) ? I ask this question because all notebooks have USB 2.0 hardware capability, but not all BIOSes support booting with USB 2.0 speed.
For example booting BartPE (about 400 MB) takes 1-2 min with USB 2.0, but 10-15 min with USB 1.x. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
The User Guide shows booting from a USB key as a boot option. However, there is no clue about the speed.
BTW, I've just joined the NC10 owner's club: I happened to look in Currys, saw the NC10 on display, discovered they had one in stock so I bought it.
So far, my biggest annoyance is with the small right shift key (a feature of the UK keyboard - the US keyboard has a big right shift key).
I see the monitor code is CPT04C4. Anyone know who makes it? Samsung is SEC.
John -
Does Samsung provide a recovery DVD of some sort? To revert the OS back to factory image?
-
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
BTW, I will be putting together a review for NBR. Are there any specific points that people would like to see included?
John -
CanSpoilU: yes, it comes w/ a recovery disc.
-
I am moderately concerned about the size of the right shift key but I think I will manage. John, can you see if you can install the hacked Synaptics drivers that support gestures? They support gliding which is useful on a smaller trackpad. This is assuming that the supplied drivers are missing the gliding capability.
-
The hacked driver I tried, with two and three finger gestures, did not work. -
here are som pics of my black nc10

Got my NC10, I like it very much, although I am sending it in to fix a problem with the screen (a vague discoloration in one area of the screen, sort of an oval shape where the screen is darker than the surrounding area). Will let y'all know how the warranty claim process goes.
My educated guess here is related to the rigidity of the lid - not very. It's rather easy to make the screen ripple, I'm guessing at some point in the assembly the lid got pushed down on and caused the problem. -
Anyone who have calibrated the lcd (CPT04C4) yet?
Using spyder or other colorimeters
Please post ICC profile in that case
Stock is quite blue
