I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I'm strongly considering the NP940X5J (due to its great keyboard layout, large and FHD-res IPS/PLS-like screen, light weight, long battery life). However, I will dual-boot Ubuntu 14.04 with Win 8.1 and will be using Ubuntu 99% of the time, so it must work well with Ubuntu. Has anyone tried installing Ubuntu on the NP940X5J? Does all the hardware work correctly? Any tips for a smooth dual-boot installation process would be appreciated too. Thanks!

Hey Hubert, or anybody else with a physical machine sitting in front of them; stats keep coming out saying that there is a total of 2 USB ports, but sometimes it says three, and all of the pictures have one on one side, and two on the other, which counts to three in my book. What's going on with that? Does the power port on the left not count as an otherwise USB port?

I removed the rubber rectangle from the motherboard underneath the Crucial M550 SSD and put it on top of the SSD.

That fixed the bending. (Sorry, I forgot to take pictures)

Note: The power consumption issue with the Crucial M550 SSD (and the Crucial M500 SSD) has not been fixed yet by Crucial.

The primary SSD is the blue rectangle below the two fans.

    Photo:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...aswell-announced-jan-6-2014-041-optimized.jpg

It should be possible to change remove the primary SSD, but I did not try, since I am happy with the pimary Samsung SSD.

PS: Can anyone tell me where the RAM is in the photo?
And what are those 2 squares with the holes in them?

No ,that cant be SSD ,that is ribbon cable that connects two parts of motherboard
Ram is under those 2 squares with holes, soldered. What i suspect is that primary SSD is under motherboard. Why?Because i still didn't see that SSD..
Now look how little components EVO 250GG have i wouldn't be surprised even if one of those squares is solders SSD.Is just matter of time we saw that.

I think the primary SSD is under the ribbon cable. There's enough room for both.

The X3B also had the SSD largely covered by one of the ribbon cables.

    Hi all,
I should be receiving a NP930 tomorrow, and am anxious to put it through my own paces regarding battery life, since that was the big draw for me. (ie, prove or disprove the 14 hour figure while I still have time to return it.) This thread seems to have shown that it can idle with the screen off for 24 hours, but there doesn't seem to be an active use test, and none of the main review/tests have come out yet.

Previously on this thread, people were measuring wattage being used at idle, and under certain tasks. Was there a program used for that, or were you bridging connections somewhere?

Also is there a good standard for stress-testing outside of whatever the review magazines have set up for their tests? I was just going to find a 10 hour youtube video, and see if it made it to the end while playing video and streaming.

To measure the wattage please download HWINFO. It is free:
    HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download
Make sure you click on DOWNLOAD INSTALLER (not on DOWNLOAD - which is an ad for another product.)

Click on SENSOR and scroll all the way down to BATTERY to see how much the battery is being charged or discharged.

A warning to those of you wanting to add a second SSD.

I received mine today in the UK, but sourced in Italy. The model number is NP930X5J-K01IT.

When I removed the bottom cover, I was very dissapointed to see that the area marked 2nd SSD has no SSD socket soldered to the main board!

Also, I find the fans much, much louder than my MacBook, and also they are on the majority of the time.

I will remove the original SSD and install a 512GB M550, then try Windows 7 ult and see how it is. (This model is Win 8.1Pro only - No downgrade offered)

You would think Samsung would include it with a premium notebook, at premium pricing, targeting the business market -- where many will need the adapter for presentations.

Best Buy had them on clearance for a long time, but they're out now. Instead of spending $40 on one from Samsung (or only a little less from Amazon) I recommend getting an HDMI to VGA adapter, which can be bought for just a few bucks and is more universally useful.

The Samsung mini-VGA dongle is relevant for those who need to connect multiple external displays.

That explains why the Italian version is so much less expensive.

Please measure the power usage before and after installing the M550.

Hey. I have been running my NP930x5j with the all cores maxed out and I get roughly 4-5 hours battery life. Not that this is a bench mark, but that is what I have been seeing when I am running my software under these circumstances.

    1359 Euro's.

I don't have the invoice to hand, but there are plenty of Italian sellers listing them. I believe they are shipping from the Italian arm of Ingram Micro (Distributor).

I don't think changing the keyboard is an option, it's backlit and not widely available as the notebook is a new version. Italian keyboards are not too different. I've used it in its Italian layout (so the keys match the output) and also in Uk layout. No issues. I have more trouble pressing the Mac positions on the PC by accident!

Man that is ridiculous,it would be the last thing to expect from Samsung.Manufacturer that bring us reliable and cheap SSDs ,great smartphones and nu.1 Windows notebooks. You are right hubert that is probably the reason why it cost less, but 300 less for only one pci-e port i think its .....i dont know how to call that.
Right man with steady arm maybe can even draw profit from this ,soldering wire directly to EVO 1GB msata.Who knows maybe its possible.
But are you sure peec this isnt some kind of mistake, what it says in your manual ,i just cant imagine why would Samsung charge second SSD port 300€.

Perhaps Samsung had a production run failure and instead of throwing away the motherboards they decided to sell the laptop at 300 Euros (412 dollars) cheaper in a limited and perhaps technically less demanding market such as Italy?

    5 Watt is excellent.
Since I put in the Crucial M550 SSD into the 2nd M.2 slot, the Dis-Charge Rate has jumped to 7-10 Watts.
It will be interesting to see if it makes a difference when you put the Crucial M550 SSD is in the Primary SSD slot.

    i7-4500U
    8GB RAM
    256 GB SSD
    it specifically says:
Memoria di massa Numero supporti: 1
( Number of Supported Mass storage devices: 1)

    It also says:
Controller typology: SATA revision 1.0 (SATA 1.5 Gbit/s)
    Dimension supported 1: 256 gb
    Interface supported 1: SATA revision 1.0 (SATA 1.5 Gbit/s)
Type supported 1: SSD (Solid State Drive)
    Speed supported 1: 0 rpm

    Battery life: 8 hrs

Peec, can you run a benchmark to check if it is really SATA 1?

Or go to Programs -->Intel --> Rapid Storage Technology --> Manage --> Advanced --> and it will tell you the SATA transfer rate.

O you don't have to worry about that huberth,it is impossible.
It is haswell chipset and haswell chipset has only sata3 support. That is something that is not in Samsung hands its Intel's part of job.
    Intel-Z87-Chipset-Diagram-600x499.png
Only thing that Samsung can do is to choose what connection will they give to consumers.I mean will they give all six sata3 or just one.

Day 1 with US version of NP930X5J

    Impressions:
    -Sleek, awesome feel.
-Why is one of these USBs 2.0? Why do that?
-Really distinct clicks on the touch pad buttons, keys feel great.
-Back light on key board is white, and pretty bright. I thought I had read about it being muted and blue at one point. Bit of a disappointment there.
-Had to plug it in to activate it, but then it had ~50% battery.
-Booted quickly, but didn't impress me with particular blazing speed or anything.
-Didn't hear the fan, but it's hot here, and I have a window fan running.
-After 2.5 hours of streaming youtube, just enough heat on the bottom to say, "this spot is a slightly different temperature", but hardly any real difference. Same on the keyboard. Ok, THAT's impressive.

    Details:
-Weighed in at 4.0 lbs on a scale accurate to nearest 0.1
-11secs to boot from cold (after shutting it down).
-Turned screen all the way up, streamed uber long Youtube kids animation via Wifi on full screen viewing. Battery started at 52%, lasted 2.5 hours.
-Plugged it in, turned it back on, shut it down, and full turned it on again. Button push to login screen in 2.5 seconds. generally much faster on this round.

Full battery test tomorrow, after it's charged. I'll be happy with comfortably more than 10 hours, but I'm nervous....

I think it's just a way for them to differentiate products. We may well see the launch of raided model at a different price point. No one would buy it if the second socket was in place, allowing you to just plug a second drive in. Either way, I'm very dissapointed.

The M.2 surface mount socket costs nothing to buy and the solder pads are present, I might ask around locally if any one has the necessary equipment to add the socket!
I can survive with 512gb (or 1Tb when the larger M.2 SSD's ara available). I'll swap the original SSD tomorrow for the M550/512gb and see what it's like for Power draw / performance.

    Thanks.

The layout is much closer to the UK keyboard than the German or French. Shame about the missing slot. Otherwise I might get tempted but i won't settle for less than 1TB storage since that is what I now have in my X4C.

When is the UK version(s) expected to surface? I'm getting impatient waiting. I'm wonder how many sales Samsung have lost due to vague and poorly executed release strategies like this one.

Don't forget to take pictures when you remove the ribbon cable.
We are all curious to see what lurks underneath...

I know this question has probably already been covered multiple times, but I was hoping someone could answer for me. Getting slight cold feet and want to ensure if spending this type of money on a laptop, there won't be any surprises. As far as going with the US 256 version, can I add storage, say another 256 or would I have to add a 512 on the other side? Or can it even be done? My other question is with regards to say adding the same exact ssd type supplied, is it even available? My main concern being not hindering battery life. Any input is appreciated!

Are you referring to the hard connector running left to right? If you are, I can tell you what's under it, SSD1.
I took this out when I was looking at the main board a couple of days ago.

I'll post some photos later today.
