Does anyone who owns this have things setup so they can get around the 120hz black screen issue?

I tested it in a store and the screen would turn off if you turned it to the 2 lowest power modes.

    hi guys

about the UK vatback thing. i just got bitten by dumb dabs.com. i got my laptop yesterday and now when i call them the invoice will be TOMORROW when they dispatch (dafuq) so i don't get the deal. the deal is based on the invoice date not the order date. So if you guys order from those online sites, check back with them. i feel like stabbing myself now. sob!

I called Samsung Canada yesterday, and they still won't/can't say when it will be released.

I did just notice the original 675M model on sale ($100) by a large Canadian reseller. Hopefully that's indicative of an impending new model introduction. One can hope!

Hmm, if that's the case mine will be going back and I'll be getting a Sager. Have you looked at the Samsung Spring site.. Samsung Spring

Under the Terms and Conditions, General Provisions it states
"In order for your claim to be successfully validated the proof of purchase must: Be either an invoice, receipt or order notification. Delivery notes are not accepted. "

So as far as I'm concerned I placed my order on the sixth, thus purchasing it, and I received an email (ie receipt/order confirmation) confirming same.

If you received an email or suchlike then according to the Samsung site then that surely counts ? I fail to see why a shipping date or the date they send out an invoice is relevant as they could be delayed for various reasons.

So yea it says order notification right there right! but when i call the international department of samsung they say no. They don't work order numbers simply invoice numbers. I mean it's a website recommended ny direct link from samsung.com. if i click on purchase laptop, that should be the date that counts. don't give me small print disclaimers...

to top it off? when i ask dabs.com too much, they simply ninja cancel my order... dafuq! Really distasteful. Thumbs down boo!

Use your back statement, its proof, or ask them for a credit card receipt, it should be the date you paid.

Hold "FN" (function) and press "F3" (Brightness +).

On 120hz mode, there is a minimum threshold at which the screen brightness can be set on. Hope this helps, friend.

The speaker quality is pretty good, but not great.
Do things sound crisp and clear? Absolutely.
Will the bass knock you out of your seat? Of course not.
Does any laptop have movie theater quality LFE's (low frequency effects) coming out of their tiny portholes? Not that I've ever seen.
Seriously, what do you expect? Besides, I have Bluetooth headphones with a mic built in for when I game.
The display on this laptop is so sweet, your brain won't be able to process the sound anyway. I know it sounds cheesy, but any review I've seen of this laptop always mentions the screen quality.

I was looking at the Chrono 7, and all the reviews mentioned how great the speaker&screen was on that thing, but the GPU in it is week.
I guess you cant have the best of both worlds, eh? :D

BTW, nice videos on youtube, i enjoyed watching them

i was kinda thinking of the same thing but they didn't charge my card till the invoice date which is too late. The only evidence i have that i made the order is my order number which they specifically say they do not accept. This really put me off this whole purchase. Looking around for something else now. A pity i really really like their new screen.

Hmm MBP...amazing screens...should it even be a consideration ... so bloody expensive though.

Are you referencing the new MacBook Pro with the retina display? Yes, it has a 15.4" screen with a 2880x1800 resolution. That is absolutely amazing but it comes with the 650M. But it's Apple they always gimp their notebooks when it comes to graphics cards.

The new Mac seems ok but I refuse to do anything apple :D Nice resolution but the gpu is weak and the price is ridiculous for the ram and storage you get and 15" is too small for me.

Have you rang up Dabs and explained the situation to them, and asked for an invoice dated from when the order was put in ? They surely can't be so bad that they'd refuse something simple like that.

Thanks can you set the levels in windows or in any ini file or anything so that you dont have to manually do that?

The best solution would be if we could get the screen to drop down to 60hz automatically when turning the knob down to the lower 2 settings.

I did call dabs and they say and I will quote "we are sorry the invoice date must be on the delivery date even if your order is on the 6th. Looks like you are not eligible. Would you like me to cancel your order?" I said no let me call Samsung

I call samsung with no luck and hey they cancelled the order anyway.
    I give up.

Btw I agree with you guys. Apple go overboard with everything and can't put a half decent graphic card? I like the 15 inch actually but the graphic card is kind of the stopper for me. Any other ivy bridge laptop with good display that u guys know of? As long as I can play diablo 3 I am good. Even looked at asus zenbook ultrabook, sadly 620m. Anything else?

That really sucks, very disappointing support by Dabs and it's cost them a sale for a small amount of work.

I was going to get a Sager/Clevo only for the vat-back deal which came up. Have a look at PCSPECIALIST - Custom PCs, Custom Computers, Custom PC, Desktop PC, Custom Built Computers, Gaming PC or PWN PCS - Custom Built Performance and Gaming Laptops

You can disable all game mode effects. Run Modeshift (located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\ModeShift). Disable effects in game options. The mouse pointer will not change, but neither will you see the animated game mode transition effect. You can change your background and screensaver as well, after you have disabled game mode effects.

What are the notebook temperatures during load and idle? I mean external, CPU and GPU temperatures. In this case the stress test (Furmark or Prime) would be adequate (to compare results with Samsung 700G7A).

it works well simply just simply go to
    C:\program files (x86)\samsung\modeshift\resource folder
and delete the 3 cursor files
    fps_mousecursor.cur
    rpg_mousecursor_2.cur
    racing_mousecursor.cur
and it will stay to default windows cursor when you go to gaming mode.
I was annoying by the samsung gaming cursors too ;)

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anyone know how to fix the touchpad not working while you're typing? I can't figure out if it's a "feature" of the Elantech touchpad or if it's an issue with the laptop.

EDIT: I actually managed to fix this by uninstalling the touchpad drivers. I don't have that fancy two- or three-finger touch stuff anymore, but I never planned on using that, anyway.

I'm deciding between this and the Asus G55VW. I know, I know.. the G55VW is alot cheaper and only has a 660M.. Hear me out..

One reason is because they both weigh the same.. I game 99% of the time with a cushioned lapdesk on my lap on the couch. Have a logitech darkfield mouse that works great on a stiff pillow. :) Plus I can sit near the wife and pause the game whenever something comes up instead of feeling like I'm running into some dungeon somewhere.

The other reason is because the G55 seems to have a phenomenal cooling solution that is very quiet. I have also seen people here praising the Series 7 cooling and noise, but also some people have gone the other direction and said the heat is bad and it's noisy. That's my primary concern.

If this thing truly is quiet (won't bother my wife while she's watching TV with me sitting 3 feet away gaming..) and it's not nuclear hot (my hand won't feel uncomfortably warm sitting on the keyboard after a couple-few hours of a modern game) I'd be willing to get this instead of the G55 to have something that will last just a bit longer down the road speed wise.

So, really, how is the heat and noise?

ok but does it overclock the gpu or cpu?

i also cant decide between this or msi gt70 with 675m. performance is the most important thing for me so asus g75 is not a choice. Does this laptop run really hot? Which one should i buy?

The MSI GT70 has keyboard issues according to many. Best I can tell the samsung keyboard is really nice. Also AFAIK the MSI GT70 does not have a 120hz screen. That is really the deal maker with this laptop.

What is the aim of having a 120hz screen if it doesnt support 3d

your eye wont recognize difference between 60 fps and 120 fps

It just makes your game that much more prone to not being able to stay at monitor refresh sync for frame rate. I don't think the 675M is quite enough to stay at 120 fps cranking up eye candy. 60 is probably doable for many games. Being able to maintain 60 fps with vsync to eliminate tearing is the holy grail.

Your eyes might not be able to tell the difference but mine do, I can tell the difference between 60 and 120 hz and for myself I wont touch anything that is not more than 90hz on any device I use for gaming.

People have polar opposite ideas on this for whatever reason. To each his own. Not everyone has the same genetic ability or they never trained themself to take advantage of increases in capability.

I will say this, years ago everyone said you cannot see more than 30 fps, they said that based on movie studio decisions. But lets be honest does anyone think 30 fps is acceptable now?

The bigger question is what games are you going to play at what settings. Because if you are only playing BF3 on high then you might not be able to get more than 60 fps anyway. Another way to look at it is would you rather have an econobox car that takes 30 seconds to get up to 70 mph? Or have something better than can go faster than you will ever need to and accelerates faster for when you do need it or can use it? No one really understands how exactly the human eye and brain works. So my philosophy is that you try to build things as fast and responsive as you can. If humans can take advantage of it they will.

I always say what is the point in having 3d? It is only a vehicle for finally getting the stingy engineers at the display makers to finally give use the 90+ fps we have been missing since LCDs knocked CRTs out of the market.

Now another arguement could be for image quality. Sure with high refresh you can get screen tearing, then there is color accuracy. But if you are looking for those things then I dont think you should be deciding between the samsung and msi, you should be looking for one of the few laptops with ips screens or going for a sager with a high gamut LCD.

Then why is it that 3d screens are 120hz? Why wouldn't they just be 60hz if no one can tell?

So how can you see the flickering if your eyes cant tell the difference from 30fps?

Clearly the eye can see something.

There is no point in derailing this thread there are other places where people have had arguements lasting hundreds of posts about this issue. At the end of it all the only thing we know for sure is anyone who claims humans cannot see more than 30FPS is either trolling or basing it off of incomplete or nonexistent evidence. The top FPS gamers in the worls would NEVER play at 30fps unless they were playing on a crappy console and had no choice.

At the end of the day, as long as the hardware can keep up an vsync with the monitor refresh rate, it's good enough for me.. 60.. 120.. whatever..

I agree though, lets answer my heat and noise of the gamer 7 question. :)

I think someone else posted this as well... but here's possibly an answer to the MXM question.

This is the older model with the AMD 6970, but the chassis looks identical I would imagine the internals are not much different. It seems the card is probably their own variation not the MXM standard. A tad unsure based off the translation from russian.

Does anybody still believe that a version of this machine with the 7970m and 3D is actually going to come out anytime soon? Would be great to have an option for 3D besides the M17x with the 680m that is going to cost a fortune most likely!
