It slightly overclocks CPU (like Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 - from 2.3GHz to maximum 3.2GHz) and GPU, but I'm not sure about the last one option.

Is it possible that anyone will extract the gaming mode animation, so it can be used on other computers? It's just too awesome. :D

This is an AWESOME machine, but it doesn't *quite* have the grunt I'm looking for. Anyway, i'll be selling in the next few days, so If anyone in the UK is interested, let me know. Not intending to 'make' any money on it, so would sell for just below the VAT back price.

I'm just awaiting delivery of a 7970m xfire AW.

In looking at a picture of a 7970M MXM 3.0b board above, the card edge, mounting holes and chip position and also length look identical. It just looks like the Samsung board for the 6970 has an extra set of chips on the edge. It might fit!!

Can anyone disassemble the unit with the 675M and check that MXM card? I bet it's standard!

EDIT: Now that I look again, there is that cutout on the upper right that looks like it might be done in order to fit around something. :(

This is a massive thread on this machine!! I have to say, thanks so much guys for everyone who has been posting information on this. I have been in the market for a desktop replacement laptop for the last 4 months, and I tend to be horribly picky in that regard. I came across the Samsung 7 Gamer just last week actually, and I immediately wanted to know more. Thanks to Drunkenclam for the great video reviews they finally sealed the deal for me! My Laptop should be here sometime today! I ordered from Newegg. I will be happy to post a critique and review after I get it, so if anyone has any questions they would like answered, let me know and I'll try to address it in my review.

Awesome, I suggest running playing a game for about 15-30 with sound off or headphones plugged in, some modern game like COD or D3, and comment on heat on the keyboard area and general audibility of noise in a quiet room.

The keyboard gets pretty hot around the WASD keys, almost to a point of being uncomfortable. The noise wasn't too bad. with sound off you will hear the fans running, but they won't really disturb gaming sessions. You will prob be able to hear them while gaming slightly, but it won't be bad.

My biggest issue was the heat on the keyboard, the keyboard got really really hot =\

That's a little disappointing. Is it on a flat surface with the vents on the bottom unblocked?

Do you think someone sitting a few feet away would be annoyed by the fans?

Edit: thanks for taking all these questions! :)

I haven't experienced any of the heat problems at all. I've hammered it for hours playing Crysis 2 and BF3, and both the keyboard and the area around the keyboard are actually *cold* to touch, as if it has built in air con. This is with the GTX675 version.

There is actually a review posted in this thread that talks about how how the laptop gets on the left side. The GPU is on the left and I tried it 2 ways - one on a laptop cooler which was counter productive because the laptop cooler pulls air away from the bottom of the laptop and the second just on a laptop board where it just sat on a board that was on my lap. Both times had the fans uncovered.

I will try to find this review in the previous pages.

Edit: found it read the review below, it is exactly the same experience I have had.

    http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/samsung-series-7-gamer.aspx

I would honestly wait for a 7970m version as that one would run cooler and prob be less noisy.

I'm convinced there must be a problem with some of these - as my keyboard has genuinely, never got even remotely warm, let alone hot. It's also always been extremely quiet.

I'm not exaggerating when I say it's actually *cold* to touch, even after 5 hours of play - especially around the left of the W/A/S/D keys. It feel the same as my phone does when it's been in front of the aircon grills in my car. Would be interested to know if anyone else here is in the same position as me.

I concur. No heat issues on mine either. And quiet. I heard the fan on the other day because I was inadvertantly restricting air flow by blocking the rear, and I started feeling around for heat on the keyboard and didn't notice anything.

Let me know what free software I can download to track heat while gaming, and if I have the time, I'll post some results.

Heat and noise are subjective, and I think hard data will settle the question. If my numbers are, and the numbers of those will cool, quiet laptops are very differrent from the numbers reported by the warm laptops, then we'll have to dig deeper to figure out why some laptops are cooler than others.

Perhaps someone with a warm laptop can also track temperatures with the same software to compare notes.

Someone mentioned hwmonitor? Is that what I should use? Does the free version get the job done?

Something tells me the 7970M model may not be available in the US from what I've been reading. That all could be wrong, however.

The good thing appears to be that it is in fact upgradable, just need someone to try it. :)

I'd be willing to live with the 675M for a while and upgrade it down the road.

EDIT: I realized how silly "live with" seems when you look at my current specs..

Ok, so a quick overview of this laptop now that I have it. First of all, everything people say about this screen is true. Its almost too much for me! It is incredible color, and brilliant as all get out. Everything just looks amazing on it. I do have a nit pick about it, and that is that if you have it on 120 refresh rate, you can only dim the display approx 3 points. Then it just goes black. I think thats stupid. I prefer the higher refresh rate, and to not be able to control the brightness through my personal preference is annoying to say the least. So far I have not done any gaming I have simply installed a crap ton of software and made my recovery discs in case I want to do a factory reinstall. Noise levels? Non existent. Im not kidding, I haven't been able to hear this thing unless I put my head down to and then I can hear it whispering along. Love that. The write speeds on the optical drive by the way are nothing to write home about, and its louder than the fans when just using this in balanced mode.

Addressing the heat issue. As I said already I have not done any gaming yet, but I can already feel warmth in the keypad. It is as others have said, located around the WASD keys. I also seem to feel a little bit under the wrist rest. It is nothing extreme so far, I am just aware of some warm air under the keys, but I am somewhat nervous about putting it through its paces with some graphic heavy games for several hours. We shall see.

Overall, this is a very well put together machine. The keypad is excellent, keys respond very well and no flexing where you don't want it. Screen of course, can't stop talking about that, and the chassis doesn't flex much. It is a smudge/fingerprint magnet though.

If your looking for things to pick about.. there are plenty. Is it worth getting now? I would say absolutely. I can live with the little annoying nuances of a company thats just starting out into a new market. Its not enough to be a deal breaker. I'll post more as I do more with it. Thanks for reading!

yep what he said. It is excellent. My signal strength hasn't left 5 bars no matter where I am in the house.

An interesting item of note to add regarding the heat issue. I turned off the backlighting for the keys. Within 3-4 minutes, I noticed the the keypad had cooled significantly. I am curious if perhaps because the lighting is more intense under the WASD keys, it makes them a little hotter. Not likely however, since I work with LED technology, and it should be running quite cool as back light. I do still feel warmth just above the wrist rest. Again however, its nothing concerning, or even uncomfortable.

I am currently running Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and After Effects all at once. Photoshop has a rather large document, and After Effects has been processing video. The fans haven't kicked into high gear yet, nor has the heat gotten any higher and I have been working for approx 2 1/2 hours so far.

I'll get to gaming when im done working and post my thoughts on that. Just wanted to say that when it comes to processing for work, the CPU hog programs haven't slowed this workhorse down even a little!

I haven't done much gaming other than maybe an hour of Skyrim once or twice but haven't noticed any heat whatsoever then. I also regularly run large photograph batches which last several hours and increase the cpu load up to nearly 100% at times and still nothing. I do hear the fan alright but that's in an otherwise silent room and it is still very quiet and doesn't bother me at all.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what the colour gamut is on this screen ? It certainly is very bright and vibrant that's for sure. Oh, Optimus isn't enabled on this either is it ?

If anyone else is running linux I just found this which slows down the fan.

Works fine for me on Mint 13, it doesn't turn it off entirely but certainly slows it down. I installed the .deb file under downloads then followed the instructions by modprobing it etc.

heat and fan noise are all subjective. Someone please post temps using hwmonitor after playing at least 1 hour bf3.(dont close bf3, just post while it still runs)

i just cant decide between this and msi gt-70. Performance are all same, design is good on both laptops so it all comes to heat i guess...everything else is similar or same :(

The only thing I've had time to install so far is Skyrim just to check that out. Settings completely jacked up with the high res texture pack and it flies.

Heat is a non-issue. It's definitely running cooler than my old N61jq at the keyboard, and the fan is audible but not that big a concern. Liking it so far. I can defintiely feel a little warmth at WASD but it's not near enough to cause me concern. Keyboard is nice, though it's taking a tad getting used to since i'm now so used to the island-style keyboard that sony used in Viao and Apple aped.

I wish I could turn off the two red rings that pulse with the sound. I don't notice them while I'm playing a game but it's just a little annoying. Doesn't seem to serve a purpose. Small nitpick.

EDIT: maybe some things to consider vs GT70 (I assume you are looking at the 675M version with the 750G HD)
    1. Sammy display has to be the best i've seen on a laptop.. it's stunning
    2. There's a free XBox combo deal at newegg for the GT70 right now.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152347
    3. The GT70's without the SSD are cheaper, though the sammy does come with 8G express cache and two 750G drives (not raid)
    4. which brings me to, Sammy is HM76, not hardware RAID capable, GT70 is with the HM77 (I don't care i'm going to get a 256G SSD soon I have no interest in RAID, but skyrim loads damn fast even with the 750G spinner)
    5. If you were looking at the 670M version of the GT70, that GPU is slower..
    6. The 4GB vram on MSI 675M isn't going to make a difference over 2GB on Sammy
    7. Sammy has 16GB ram vs 12GB on MSI, that wont really matter either
    8. It looks like MSI might eject hot air out the left side unless that's an intake. Sammy ejects all out the rear. That was important to me because my wife sits close by on my left. :)
    9. I don't know if MSI is using MXM, I would imagine so, for potential future GPU uprades. It looks like Sammy is using it's own take on MXM (maybe.. hard to say), but it's already rumored they are going to have a 7970M version in the UK. I would imagine US users can get that vid card from them to upgrade. My guess GT70 would be the same, possibly easier.
    10. Sammy has blu ray.. (i didn't really care about that have a PS3)..

    hard choice.. hah :)

I really am only slightly annoyed by the red ring lights that pulse to the sound. The rest are fine. It's a strange design decision because the Samsung gamer looks classy otherwise.

    Wow! thank you :D

does sammy's screen better than msi gt70's screen?

How much does the 8gb cache reduce booting time?

i will buy 675m for sure but i have got a question about that. 675m is just a rebranded 580m so everything is same(core speeds, shader count...) so why 675m is faster(%5) than 580m? everything is same, how is it possible?

    i have got a ps3 too so i dont need blu-ray too :p

can you please post temps after insane gaming using hwmonitor?

Samsung's screen is better than msi without any doubts. It has about 953:1 contrast ratio (msi has 779:1) and 350 nit brightness (in this case gt70 has 250 nit).

    675m is probably overclocked 580m.

Sammy screen is definitely higher quality.

The 675M has a single digit performance percentage lead over the 580M. If you haven't seen it, here's the notebookcheck write-up of the 675M where they explain the difference between it and the 670M, 580M, and 485M. It actually ends up raising more questions than it solves since they say the 675M has higher core clock, but it doesn't based on the page for each at their site.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-580M.56636.0.html

Let's just call the two even and be done with it. 3-5% is not going to make or break anything.

I'll run some tests tonight if I can with hwmonitor.

I own metro 2033 I just have to download it again on steam on the new Sammy, I'll use that. Might not be able to get to it tonight though I'll try.

wow, didnt know sammy had that better screen :)

    yea notebookcheck conflicts itself

"..is essentially a renamed version of the GeForce GTX 580M but with higher core clock rates"

"...the performance per MHz of the GF114 stays the same even though Nvidia was able to clock the shaders higher while still remaining in the same power scale. "

"the GeForce GTX 675M is as fast as the old GTX 580M "

    675m

    Pipelines 384 - unified
    Core Speed 620 MHz
    Shader Speed 1240 MHz
    Memory Speed 1500 MHz
    Memory Bus Width 256 Bit
    Memory Type GDDR5

    580m

    Pipelines 384 - unified
    Core Speed 620 MHz
    Shader Speed 1240 MHz
    Memory Speed 1500 MHz
    Memory Bus Width 256 Bit
    Memory Type GDDR5

They are just 2 identical cards however i found 2 videos comparing these 2 cards and 675m is better by 3-5 fps even more surprisingly in some games 580m is better

Don't sweat it.. who cares about that low of a difference. It's margin of error. The laptop is fast, period. The only other thing you could do is get one with a Radeon 7970m or wait for the 680M.

I have not overclocked and have no interest in it. I will probably look to upgrade to the 7970 or 680 in the future if options are available from Samsung or if it's possible to use another mxm card. For right now I think I'm set.

I play Skyrim and Civ 5, and I can max out all settings, even with several graphical improvement and HD texture mods running on Skyrim, without ever having to resort to overclocking to boost frame rates.

I'm not a big fan of overclocking because of long term reduction in the average life of the GPU. That's one of the reasons I did not buy a cheaper laptop with a weaker card. I wanted enough power from the get go. That being said, I have slightly overclocked the GPU using MSI Afterburner just to benchmark the card using 3DMark 11 (Directx 11).

With 700/1500 (no memory overclocking) the laptop scored approx 4050. I ran this test soon after I received the laptop. At 620/1500, it scored about 3550, lower than the median of 3700 for 675M laptops. So I experienced about a 14 to 15% gain in performance with only a slight overclocking of the GPU from 620 to 700.

I just reran 3DMark 11 (with several background programs running) with a slightly higher overclock setting of 715/1625 and scored 4030. I also ran the test connected to an external monitor which sometimes lowers performance slightly. Link below

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. SAMSUNG_NP1234567890 score: P4030 3DMarks

Might retry later after closing IE, Steam, and several other background programs. CPU score should see a boost.

I won't overclock when I game. I just don't have the need to. If in the future I do get into something more graphically demanding, I'll tweak the overclock settings for about a 15% boost in frame rates, which is about all I'm willing to risk.

Here's temps from hwmonitor after some time playing Metro 2033

    Hardware monitor ACPI
    Temperature 0 63°C (145°F) [0xD22] (TZ00)
    Temperature 1 63°C (145°F) [0xD22] (TZ01)

    Hardware monitor NVIDIA NVAPI
    Voltage 0 0.87 Volts [0x366] (VIN0)
    Temperature 0 77°C (170°F) [0x4D] (TMPIN0)
    Fan PWM 0 100 pc [0x64] (FANPWMIN0)

Max on the GPU got up to 84°C at some point, dumping the log doesn't give you the min/max/current though, just the current. I alt-tabbed quick as I could to save it, too late for a screenshot.

    BUMP!

turn out it is Diablo 3 problem with HDD reading, solve it with moving MPQ file.

    other games run smoothly!

any1 can help with this?
"do i need to update any driver? as i cant update through nvidia website.
also what about PhysX? do i need that too?"

why u cant update through nvidia?
yes u need physx it is something special for nvidia which some games use it. but it decreases your fps so you wont use it anyway but still download it.
