Maybe this is why it is not called 120Hz by Samsung at all.

Yeah I never knew it was 120Hz until I tried it out, 120Hz isn't messed up on mine, though I can't tell the difference much, but it isn't worst than 60Hz, I just can't see the difference so I just use 60Hz. That way I can keep the brightness to what I want. To me it's just bragging rights, lol. I have a 120Hz screen. Most people won't give a rats behind, but some will be like "Lucky *insert profanity here*) lol. Just how it is.

I will say that using 120Hz will potentially give you better vsync performance. Vsync restricts to rates that are factors of the monitor Res.

    60 = 60-30-20-15
    120 = 120-60-40-30-24-20-15

If the game can't keep over 120Hz consistently you could definitely see how 120 could be bad for vsync with constant switching from 120 to 60. BUT! Most games at high detail and 1080p are going to hover more near 60. Switching between 60 and 40 would be better than 60 and 30. And also there are just more intermediate steps.

As well, vsync is really only necessary when the game frame rate exceeds the monitor refresh. At 120Hz its plausible it may not even be necessary for modern high detail games that can exceed 60Hz but will rarely if ever exceed 120Hz.

So, there are benefits with and without vsync for gamers at 120Hz.

So, turn on 120Hz for games, and turn it off for other uses like video. I've NEVER seen video that exceeded 60 fps. Not even the new The Hobbit that Jackson is doing where many think his new 48 fps experiment is not a good experience.

Unless I'm just incorrect this is how it should work.

So if I understand correctly if I game supports 120Hz run that instead of vsync? Or run both 120Hz and vsync? From the way I get what you said it seems like 120Hz would cancel out needing vsync. I'm I correct in that understanding?

Well I just tried to swap out the screen and it did not go well at all. It was the same screen that works in all the Asus or MSI gamers. The plug fit and did get a bit of light but it clearly does not work in this laptop. At one point the wire was very hot to the point where I could smell it starting to burn up. Guess I am stuck with this 120Hz crappy screen for this laptop.

Correct. Just use 120Hz for gaming. Its useless for video anyway. Rare that video is ever close to 60 fps let alone 120.

Does anyone know what the model number of the display in the Samsung Gamer is? Was just curious if it was the SEC5044 like my rig. Cheers

For me 304.79 feel much smoother. The 306.2 one is a bit jaggy at some point, while the 304.79 are super smooth. In BF3, I have a higher max fps than 306.2 and it just feels smoother overall. Definitely recommend 304.79 over 306.2.

Vantage and 11 gave me the same scores in GPU so almost nothing is changed regarding those benchmarks.

I finally pulled the trigger on this laptop. I am definitely pissed off because I could have owned in 4- 5 months ago. However I stupidly broke my own rules on tech and waited for new tech only to see that it would suck, or never materialize. I am speaking mostly to the fact that samsung screwed this laptop over by not offering a modern GPU. Then finally when I had lost all hope as the 3D version had a slow AMD card I decided to try to get a quote on an alienware m17x. Sadly the quote I received was just not competitive in much of any way in fact the quote only gave me about $50 off the base price not even $100 off which I had a coupon for from dell in my email. It was going to cost me like $800 more to get the alienware and the only thing I was going to gain was a 680M, It was going to have just a 500GB hdd, 6gb of ram and a 1 step up CPU and I would have to put up with a bunch of dell gift cards and nothing else I wanted existed at dells site. On top of that clevo just kind of never bothered with 120hz. In fact I was so pissed off I actually considered just giving up entirely and dropping down to a deal on a last generation MSI for around $1000.

Anyhow with the extra money I saved over the alienware I think I will treat myself to an extra 27 inch Korean IPS monitor maybe the crossover.

BTW has anyone had any luck OC the CPU on this thing?

    ???

The 675M is the 2nd best mobile GPU in the market, after the 680M/7970M. It's a desktop 560Ti, which is still a very good GPU. It can run any game at maxed settings at 60FPS+ with only rare dips to 45FPS (in BF3) when there's a lot of explosions, smoke and characters going on in MP. (BF3, Crysis 2, etc)

Yes but its not just second best it's older and hotter and significantly less powerful. Sometimes as much as 30% by FPS that is alot of FPS when you are trying to push 120FPS. I would gladly pay an extra $300-$400 to get the 680M in here too bad no one delivers.

The what is the 2nd best mobile GPU? If the top tier is the 680M, 7970M, 675M, 670M, which one is the 2nd best? The 675M is much better than the 670, yet worse than the 7970M, which is worse than the 680M. the ranking would be 680M -> 7970 -> 675M -> 670M. The 1st two are in 1 place because their performance is pretty much the same, thus having the 675M at 2nd place.

120FPS are useless. Anything more than 60 is useless and all about bragging. If it doesn't dip less than 30-35, I consider is a good GPU, and the 675M BARELY dips 55-50.

Hi lads, i'm mega new to this forum so please forgive me if i start asking some totally bone questions, ive just bought the samsung np700g7c and was wondering whether i need to calibrate its screen. In the games ive been playing (ie Skyrim,Black Ops) in game mode the dark scenes all seem too light and greyed out on default settings, however when i lower the brightness using the keyboard all it does is lower the backlight so it seems too dim. Did you guys need to calibrate the gamma, brightness or anything like that before you were happy or did you just leave all the mode settings as is? Thanks

First of all 120fps matters I have tons of monitors including 2 120hz monitors it helps in games which is where this laptop is targeted. If you don't think so fine but don't spread fud. 30FPS is horrible and I never play any games at all at those frame rates in fact not even my 5 year old daughter likes that. Maybe your eyes are slow or you value graphic detail over fluid game play I don't know.

Now back to fps and value. The 675M even if it is the 2nd best is a distant second best, as in there was no chance for it to compete. Now if you look at desktop GPUs its the opposite, the GTX 670 is very good and with a slight easy overclock it can get you the same or better FPS than a stock GTX 680. So there it doesnt make sense to pay the extra $100 to get the GTX 680. But with laptops where power consumption and heat are huge killers of laptops the cooler and fast 680M is a really serious upgrade. If they made the 675M on the same kepler GPU then I might agree with you but they dont.

You cannot just say simply 2nd best is great you have to look at how it stacks up and what kind of FPS you are getting. With a desktop I would rarely tell people to get a GTX 680 I would almost always say save $100 and get a 670, but with this laptop the 675 is a very significant down grade. I would have gladly paid for a 680M if I had the option but they did not give me that option.

Does anyone know if this laptop support dual band 2.4 and 5 ghz?

Mine sees my dual band router. Shows my router's 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ as possible selections. (I selected 2.4GHZ as I can't get the range of the 5GHZ, too much interference or something. (Though I read that 5GHZ is supposed to be longer distance, I have yet to see it here. They also state results may vary. Meh) I don't do enough networking to make it worth using the bandwidth that the 5GHZ can give. 2.4GHz band is good enough for me. But that's my personal experience and opinion. (I just bought the dual band for future use and because my old draft-n router was dying on me.)

Na 5 ghz has less building / wall penentration but higher flow and less interference given that almost everything else is 2.4 ghz. You would want to use 5ghz if you were close to the router doing something that was bandwidth intensive, or if you just have dropped connections due to too many xbox controllers and phones and other wifi signals.

Although even with less bars you might get higher throughput with 5 ghz.

Any how thats good to know maybe I will choose a dual band access point that I need to buy in the next couple of days.

Ah, well that would explain, the house I have it in (my girlfriend's parents house) is pretty big and has a decent amount of rooms. That's a lot of walls to pass through. I've moved my laptop closer and tried out the 5GHZ, to make sure it connected. It connected fine and is running at 300Mbps according to the network status. Ill have to see how will it runs once I move to my other standard location in the house, which is farther away. Still though I don't really have a high bandwidth usage right now, but I'll keep it on the 5GHZ until it drops connection. I never thought of the fact that even though I may only have say 2 bars (right now I have full) those 2 bars may still be faster. I got my curiosity up now. So i'll be checking that out sometime very soon. And in that case a dual band router will for sure be a good update, lol :) Oh also in case anyone is wondering, the card I have in my sammy says it's an Intel 6235. That was what came in it.

So I just recieved my series 7 gamer.

    I have 2 major problems.
First tribes ascend wont run, anyone else know what causes this? nVidia says there is no update for my GPU or something.

Second all of the stupid samsung control applications keep calling up UAC prompts in my standard user account. How did you guys fix this? Also I gotta say this is surely hella poor programing by samsung because I never had any of these problems with my HP which did similar things.

For instance if you try to turn off the wifi with the capacitive button near the screen it prompts you for not 1 but 2 different applications. My HP did the same thing without any prompts.

One more thing steam always says that the service is running on another account on this laptop. Not the same as it is running on another computer. I have deleted the registry.blob and it still does it. I am starting to wonder if I should just wipe out all samsungs crap and start witha fresh install of windows.

None of these are happening with mine. Is your user admin? Maybe try restoring to factory default install from the system restore app.

As for tribes, try the latest beta nvidia drivers, tick the clean install checkbox when given the option. I would restore first obviously.

Last night I installed the latest beta driver and it worked for tribes.

I stated in my post the user account is a standard user, it is ridiculouse and insecure to expect that everyone who uses a computer must be given an Admin account. I also fixed most of the UAC prompts by instructing them to run with the admin user account instead of the currently logged in account. However 1, DevCon.exe I cannot do this with. That wont fly with me and it would not fly in any government job or most work places.

Also even doing really simple things like disabling wireless through the network adapters dialog does this.

Also anyone know where to customize the colors of the lights in the gaming mode and other modes?

1: Not yet we can only hope that samsung releases a 680M, and allows us to buy it as a replacement part. But so far the GPU is slightly non standard.

AFAIK the power mode switching is hardwired, try not installing the software and monitoring clocks and behaviour. Someone else said that the switch still worked without it.

Anyone know about the display out connections? I want to run a monitor that is 2560x1440 with a dual link DVI cable. Is this display port on the monitor DP++ or multimode? Anyone else running an external monitor that has a resolution higher than 1920x1200? How are you doing it?

I have the same problem. I use standard user account (not admin) and I got tired to allow some programs from Easy Setting software to run. I just uninstalled all Easy Setting software. I like my laptop and it is a shame for Samsung not to fix so annoying issue.
Please, could you help us with an advice how to avoid so annoying UAC prompts.

EDIT. I've found a solution - try this Helpful Tip: Disable UAC Prompt for an Application
It helped me to disable annoying UAC pop-ups.

    1. Click Start, right click on Computer and choose “Manage”.
    2. Click “Task Scheduler” on the left panel.
    3. Click “Create Task” on the right panel.
    4. Type a name for the task.
    5. Check “Run with highest privileges”.
    6. Click Actions tab.
    7. Click “New…”.
    8. Browse to the program in the “Program/script” box. Click OK.
    9. On desktop, right click, choose New and click “Shortcut”.
    10. In the box type: schtasks.exe /run /tn TaskName where TaskName is the name of task you put in on the basics tab and click next.
    11. Type a name for the shortcut and click Finish.

Found that in some google search it worked on startup for most programs but did not work when you disable wireless ad devcon.exe still promts. Also those programs often prompt at other times.

I am still having a problem where steam says its running under another user account all the time as well and I can't fix that yet. I also noticed that the CPU does not seem to down clock when I turn it to green mode.

Just received my new Samsung NP700G7C.
Does anyone know how to access the boot menu? I'd like to change boot priority order so that I can load a live image from a USB-stick in order to set up a new partition to install Ubuntu.
When I hit the F2 (or F4, F8, TAB, ESC) key during boot the BIOS menu does not appear, just the windows trouble shooting menu.

This laptop is painfully slow for the screen to come back on when opening the lid. It is also really slow compared to other gaming laptops to boot even with a lightning fast ssd.

I've found a solution - try this Helpful Tip: Disable UAC Prompt for an Application
It helped me to disable annoying UAC pop-ups (I experienced them every time I log in with my user (not admin) account. I needed to click to allow some programs from Easy Settings software to run). God bless I got rid of all UAC prompts.

Pressing F2 should work, but you have a very short time windows to do it. If there is Samsung Fast Start enabled in Easy Settings then try disabling it.

I'm sure it will work. Whether it will run faster is another matter. Look up the specs of your CPU on the Intel website. You may find that the 1866MHz RAM only runs at 1600MHz but has slightly lower latency than the existing RAM. Do you need 32GB RAM? The high capacity modules tend to have higher latencies.

not really but i was interested in the faster speeds but if it wont operate at 1866 theres no point in wasting money.

can the processor be upgraded or is that samsung proprietary tech as well???

Well I ordered mine today. Should have it tomorrow. Can't wait!

What this means for everybody else is that the price will drop or a new, upgraded version should be available next week. :)

If you have the i7-2610QM CPU then, according to this thread, the CPU does support faster RAM although it's not listed by Intel. I recall the i5-2520M in my T420s could work with 1600MHz RAM although the specs said maximum 1333MHz.

I see no reason why you can't change the CPU for another in the same family. However, as you can see from this table the performance benefits may not justify the cost.

Which CPU do you have now? Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge may not be be an easy jump.

OK. The 3820QM isn't likely to challenge the BIOS since it supports the 3610QM.

The engineering samples are, as I understand it, early release but fully functioning CPUs issued for hardware development and testing. Current production may include refinements.

Anyone? My second HDD is filled with games and I don't want to accidentally erase them. Can somebody help me? I think my first HDD is infected with a trogan (it infected a file that's nessessary for the computer to run...I think. My AVG won't give me the option to delete the trogan) and I would rather not go through the trouble of re-intalling 2 HDD worth of content and possibly screw up the re-install. Please help me out.
