Yep, and from what I read the GF114 family, (the gtx 675M is a part of) has a max temp of 105C, not 100C. So if that is to be believed and correct than you are fine. Right now I moved to a different room where it is an ambient temperature of 72F (22C) My gpu is sitting at 54-57C right now on idle. So I don't think there is much to worry about.

Bluetooth 4 doesn't actually provide any speed benefits. BT v3 with HS (traversing over 802.11) can go to 25mbit.. 100kbit sounds crap. BT v2 can go to 2mbit.

There are a lot of reasons this can happen, I'd just use file shares over wifi as its a pain to fix if its even possible. Make sure your drivers are up to date is all you can do.

I just updated mine with Windows 8. Haven't tried to run any games yet, but even after I followed all of the instructions and updated all of the software and drivers using SW Update (downloaded before the install and used after) Modeshift does not work. The laptop keyboard will change colors when I select between modes using the dial, but I have to go to the desktop and change the power plan to high performance manually. Perhaps an update will be available soon.

I also had a little trouble running SW Update after I installed Windows 8. The simple fix is to run as administrator.

Zune does not work. I have a windows smart phone and Zune is the application that syncs my phone to the laptop. I'll check a Zune update and report back.

Eventually I'll get around to testing every game in my gaming library. I update this post with compatibility list.

Hmm, I may hold off on updating my laptop to win 8 for a little while. Though I'll redeem my $14.99 download and stuff, But hold off on installing for a little while.

The 7970 does not seem to be viable anymore. A new version with 7870m seems to be arounf the corner but performance will take a big hit.

100 kb/s does seem slow. As mentioned there are alot of things that can effect this.

Just got the power back here from Sandy, I finally can surf and post........................

Update with my overheating problems. I found out that the HDMI port, when occupied into an HDTV causes the laptop to overheating. I always had my HDMI port plugged into my Sony HDTV and never disconnected it. Today I removed the HDMI cable from my laptop and my GPU went down to 40-45C idle. Just letting everyone know, incase they haven't found a solution to there overheating problems and that it could be the HDMI port on the GPU connected to their television.

So i finally bought my sammy 7 gamer and it's nothing but a joy. Lovely laptop, everything works as it should. My greatest concern regarding overheating issues/noisy fans wasn't a problem at all (haven't pushed it really but so far so good)
One thing however, the screen is truly beautiful and bright but is there any way to calibrate the colors? In "Easy settings" you can change between some preset modes (no effect/standard/movies etc) and nvidia control panel aswell, but that's way more tricky, played around alittle but I find that the brightest of colors are way too bright and shiny, like red is really screaming red and so on. Someone got any tips coz im kind of lost here? Much appreciated.

    Hi,
I have bought a new SSD and need to swap it with the primary HDD, but I have no screwdriver small enough to do the job. I can't unscrew the caddy. Can anyone tell me what size screwdriver to use before I waste money buying one that doesn't fit?
    Many thanks

Don't anticipate any issues. I will test BF3 Premium, GTA IV, and Mass Effect 1 and 2 in the coming days.

    I like the transcend I bought SSD720 512.. was 399. Crucial m4 is also good for the price. I get 500MB/s .. can't complain.

I bought a USB to SATA cable and cloned it with the software that came with it. Worked great.

Guys, I would like to confirm that brightness not switching on 120Hz was a Driver related bug. If you guys use Geforce 310.33 beta, you can finally put down the brightness and adjust it as you want at 120 Hz! :D

Cool! I'm gonna update tonight as soon as I can. I've already downloaded the driver and put it on my ftp server so it'll be all ready to get on my laptop. I love the 120Hz screen but didn't like that I couldn't adjust the display brightness and switched it to 60Hz, thanks for the discovery, now I can use the 120Hz setting! Thanks for the heads up!

Someone on Steam noticed that it does work in windowed mode. I downloaded a utility to use fullscreen windowed mode and this game is now working just fine in that scenario. So now I have zero games that don't work in Win 8. I've tried a few more since the huge list I posted as well.

Hey HFM, how much do you like Windows 8 on a laptop? I am seriously debating taking the plunge.. but I get antsy about new OS installs.. especially when i love my machine as it is lol.

Secondly, what do people recommend for testing GPU Heat levels? I have been using Speccy but it only shows the heat on my HDDs and CPU. I would like to monitor my GPU heat levels as well.

I use EVGA Precision X for watching my gpu temps, you can put the gpu temp in the notification area. MSI Afterburner does this as well. Use furmark to give your gpu an unrealistic load. (It'll probably load your gpu harder and longer than any user ever will.)

    Hi All,

First time posting on this forum after finding this nice long topic on the Gamer 7.

I've a G7C model Series 7 on reserve at Heathrow Airport Tax free but wanted to check if there were any final doubts I could think of for not buying. (I'm very much 95% sure right now to part with my cash).

It's the 675M model with the i7-3610QM (although the sales guy wasn't sure so I may be pleasantly surprised if it's the i7-3630QM).

£900 UK which is $1430 US - is that a good deal? (tax was 20% off).

Did a 7970M GFX version ever appear or was that a myth?

    Thanks, @lbert

That's an amazingly good price (by UK standards) - it must be this model. Perhaps generously discounted because the Windows 8 version (- S02UK) has arrived. Whether it is a good price by US standards is another matter.

Yes you're correct its the 2.3GHz CPU version with the 675M.

Dixons Travel are selling it for 982 UK £ and I believe they said there is stock at Gatwick Airport.

I bought it for 900 UK£ as it was ex-display but I spent an hour inspecting it and there was only the slightest scratch on the lid, everything else mint and still covered in plastic.

They threw in a free Win 8 upgrade and a Monster cleaning kit.

Full Warranty included and 60 day return policy no quibble as it was bought Airside.

Second question for you HFM... I went ahead and cloned my current hard drive as an image on the second HDD. In the past though, whenever I did an OS change, or format, i always unplugged the second or third HDD because the system never seemed to find them properly, and I ended up losing data. When I do the Upgrade, do I need to worry about disconnecting the second HDD during the process? Or just go ahead and upgrade and everything will work just fine after the fact.

Upgrading to SSD? I just bought a SATA to USB cable and used software that came with the drive to clone it. Then shut down and replaced. Was easy.

Ahh right. Clone it and make sure only the c drive has the active partition.

I use acronis to do backups, not imaging, so you might need to look up exactly how to use storage manager to set the active partition correctly.

Thank you very much. After I'd posted I thought it was the most embarrassing question ever

I now have another query...this transfer to SSD has been driving me crazy. I have made a total mess of it. I don't know why - I've swapped SSDs two or three times in the past without issue; I can't remember what I did right then that I'm failing to do now.

It's a Samsung 830 256. It didn't come with Norton Ghost (probably mistake no. 1). I've tried migrating with several different methods, including Windows system image (wouldn't work because of different disk size), Samsung's own Easy Transfer (wouldn't work as it wouldn't load the program on the new disk) and Paragon OS->SSD (just wouldn't work).

So in the end I installed Windows fresh on the new SSD. So now I have the OS installed, but no drivers or programs. I used Windows easy transfer, which was indeed easy...at transferring files. Great.

I am sure that there is some easy way of getting my settings and programs over to the new drive, but I am just out of ideas. The old drive works fine, obviously - I haven't deleted or changed anything except to shrink the partition. It's fully functioning. I also have a fully functioning D: drive.

Can anyone make any suggestions how to get the new drive running like the original C: drive?

I feel like I'm always on the take on these forums, and I'm sorry about that. But everyone here is brilliant. Thank you.

With a 480GB SSD drive I ended up doing as you did with a fresh install. I only installed Modeshift for the dial then easysettings for the FN keys. There is another thread on minimizing latency issues with Easysettings I followed as well...............

With the new install and just the modeshift and easy settings the extra functions of the Samsung become funtional but not all the eye candy like screen backgrounds etc. You can start install of all the other software and eventually you will have most of the Samsung goodies. About the only thing missing is the web cam, AV, aand BR player.

The web cam software is about useless to me. The AV is always replaced here by MSE. I do however would have liked the default BR player............

Well, I just upgraded to windows 8 without a hitch! Probably the smoothest install or upgrade of an OS I have had. Took just under an hour, keeping my files and such. Took maybe 20 minutes, to do my upgrades for my samsung stuff, and voila. Done. The new OS takes some getting used to tho...

Anyways, Im just curious, for anyone who changed drives, or changed OS.. have you noticed if your PC is still using the 8G SSD Cache for startup? I don't see anywhere to check this anymore in the new Easy Settings, and my PC boot time, seems to be slower. Anyone else notice this?

Did you install the express cache drivers from the new win8 Samsung SWUpdate tool? I removed those drivers to take it out of play since it is much slower than a SATA III SSD.

Was wondering if anyone managed a fresh install of Windows 8 on this laptop and what all needed to be installed afterwards. (Drivers- In what order and where did you get them as Samsung doesn't have Windows 8 drivers up) all that stuff. Or does the Samsung Update patch fix do it all for you? Maybe if anyone has done a fresh install. A play by play run of what you did would be great. Thanks! (Oh I planned on pulling my Windows 7 Drive and installing Win 8 to the second drive and dual booting win 7 and win 8.

Ok for starters, I have begun my clean install of Windows 8. My findings thus far:

I installed windows 8 with the usb flash drive method so any disc based stuff was skipped.
Using F10 to access the boot menu I selected the usb drive with win 8 on it.
Began installing- Took me about 20 mins.
Note: I removed my main HDD with Win 7 to prevent Win 8 messing with it.
Once Win 8 went through it's install and setup, it took me to the desktop (more on this in an update)
I installed the SW_Update file from Samsung and am currently letting it do it's job.

Note: The Win 8 upgrade I got was the actual 14.99 upgrade, which doesn't allow for a clean install. There is a way around this and I am in the process of trying that. But note: if you go the upgrade route, your give up your license for Win7. Like most people, I wasn't ready for the complete dive into Win 8 so I plan on dual booting for a little bit.(Besides I paid for a laptop with Windows 7, I should still be able to use it.) Once I get a feel for it, and see that everything I want runs on it, I will gladly format my Win 7 drive and use it for extra storage again. I have to say I like Win 8 for the most part it is just the compatibility I wanted to make sure of. If it turns out I don't like it or something I need won't run, I will wipe my Win 8 drive and keep Win 7.
This is my experience so far and will be edited/ updated as often as I can.

Has anyone had issues with modeshift on Windows 8? Everytime I use it, it turns my wifi off then back on. Interrupting any downloads or streaming content.

Also has anyone noticed the cpu running a little hotter? I haven't changed my environment (ambient temps) yet it seems to run hotter on Windows 8 than it did on Windows 7. It even hit 92C doing the Windows 8 WEI. (Which btw goes to 9.9 instead of win 7's 7.9) Win 7 didn't hit that high. Anyone notice this or have ideas why? It kind of concerns me a little as the cpu's max temp is 105C. Maybe it's just me being paranoid. I will have to do more of a check on it when I am done installing some steam games. (Fortunately I can just do a file copy of most of the games.)

I keep mine on game mode, but I have switched it without issue. Seems to do what it's supposed to with no ill effects.

Have not seen CPU get abnormally hot, I can check next time I'm using it though I don't have win 7 to compare.

Ok sounds good. Some of my issues may be I still have Win 7 on the other drive. (Whenever I boot one or the other OS it want's to do a disk check on the opposite drive) So I'm gonna have to choose one or the other soon. as for temps, while I'm doing a large file copy of over 100+ GB the temps are 42-50C. Ambient temp is 70F (22C). Any and all my issues could be stemming from trying to have both OS's at the same time. Since they want to keep repairing each other's drive. (I've canceled the last few times to no ill effects.) I still seem to have that wifi issue. (Whenever I change modes it will turn off the wifi and turn it back on. I watch the desktop when I do that it see the wifi icon go through the cycle.) The only thought I have right now is do what I do most of the time. Modify the current Power scheme to full power mode. (Which I used to do a lot on other computers so it's nothing new.) This has been my experience so far.

Edit: Seems to be I'm just being paranoid, the temps where the same in Win 7 as 8. I tried playing minecraft on both OS's and was getting about the same temps. Win 8 actually seemed to be a few degrees cooler. Not a huge difference but yeah. Still working on installing all my software for my test.

Anyone having issues with overheating? When I run Prime95 Blend test, my cpu will hit 100C degrees. The room is about 23C. I blew some air into the intake and exhaust vents of both the gpu and cpu coolers and everything. When Prime95 is running my cpu will hit around 101C but I still feel hot air coming out the vents. Could my fan be failing? What's wrong? I just redid my Windows 7 as I thought it was Win 8 that was causing this. Thanks for the help.

I've noticed that if I lift the back of the laptop off the lap desk while running kombustor my GPU temp goes from 86 to 77. Try that. The intake vents are on the bottom.

I put a cooler under it and it still seems to go that temperature. I'm really beginning to think that the cpu fan is not working right.

It seems to be my issue may have had to do with a BIOS update. My Bios updated and turned UEFI on. I checked to see if anything was different from before in my BIOS and never recalled UEFI option on my BIOS before. I disabled it and booted up Windows 7. It seems to be Idling a lot lower. I will report my findings later once I try Prime95, but in the mean time, did anyone notice the same issue?
