Are you overclocking the GPU and or video memory? If so maybe some of the video memory burnt out and that is why Win8 reported only 256m.............
Edit; The ANSI for "$" is decimal 36 or binary 00100100 so it well could be video memory error with bit flags....................

It was never overclocked. But still could have burned out, it has been pretty hot in the office lately, and I have tried doing as much as I could to cut down on temps. It may not have been enough, I'm gonna check the fans and make sure they are still firing up. I'll check the fans in the morning, as I am going to bed now, I am tired out on trying all this stuff out.
But I did open an RMA up with Samsung. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to send the laptop out until Monday as the UPS in my area is closed tomorrow. (It's Thursday) It shouldn't matter much as Samsung should get it in a couple days from sent. -
Most places are closed Monday for Memorial Day, check for that too..................

Oops, d'oh! Forgot what Monday was! Damn! Now I am really upset! I'm gonna have to wait to send it in.
Man this really sucks!

Looks like I will be sending the laptop in for repair....Again! I tried other HDD's everything. I really do think it's a gpu failure.Windows 7 sees the gpu, but not the ram and Nvidia Control won't load, it says that there is no compatible device installed. (Despite installing.)
I have uploaded more pictures to my dropbox account showing what I mean.

Are you using the driver from the NVidia site specifically for the laptop? I had a desktop version once that would do the same thing..............
-
dragonwolf8504 Notebook Evangelist
I tried both the stock driver from Samsung AND the latest drivers from Nvidia. The biggest thing is the "$" glitch BEFORE windows even boots. It happens after the Samsung startup screen and before the windows boot screen. The other interesting fact is that Windows sees the gpu before and after installation of the driver, but can't read the ram amount. I'll try to take a screenshot of that as well as soon as I get the chance. I am currently trying to find my box though so I can send it out for rma, as I feel it's the gpu's ram that has died, somehow. I never overclocked it, at least not long term, just real brief overclocks to see the higher core numbers, but even then I wouldn't stress test the gpu, I always put it to default, because default was always good enough for me.I have presently restored the laptop to as factory as possible (OS and everything so I can send it in.)

Perfect opportunity to buy something with a 680M

dragonwolf8504 Notebook Evangelist
lol, will I did say something about the fact that this is actually the second time I have had to rma this laptop, so maybe an upgrade or something. So maybe they will. I'll just have to wait and see. My laptop is now in UPS's hands. I was told it won't get there though until later next week due to Memorial Day. So I will have to wait and see.

True, didn't think of that. Will I knew about the cpu, but wasn't 100% certain on the gpu. Nice to know. Oh well, there was nothing really wrong with the laptop itself (performance wise, it did all I wanted.) So in all honesty I will be happy just to have it back and running again. I just don't think I should need to rma it twice in less than a year. Makes me wonder what the life span will be. I bought it to last me for a little longer, even if it gets long in the tooth for gaming in the future, I would have been less likely to buy a new laptop because of performance, and just because it was old. If you know what I mean. But now it's seeming like I would have been better off with a cheaper gaming laptop as I have had to pay to ship an almost $2000 laptop twice now and it cost $47 each time. Makes me question the purchase now.
-
I have not seen the internals but it could be the ram on these is attached to the heatsink. If it then were not properly pasted rendering the heatsink ineffective to the ram chips this could be an issue.

Does anyone have the Ati version of this laptop and have they had an serious issues with their's? My friend is wanting to know.
-
I don't think people have reported issues other than the standard ones that arise from ATI drivers. Since These units do not use switchable graphics a lot of the issues of other systems do not exist. Of course without the switchable graphics the battery does not last all that long. Since I am not a gamer switchable graphics would have been nice but I am rarely off AC so it is not too much an issue.
The other point of not too many having an issue also not too many have reported here purchasing an ATI equipped unit. This could be the reason not too many problems are reported. Like myself not being a gamer the T01 version may be a better choice as it usually is cheaper. I got in too early so the 675m for me but it also being more powerful may be better future proofed.
I am not sure though with the new versions if they are 3D capable too. I do not believe they have the glasses included but these are easily obtainable. I think I remember one user showed in device manager the proprietary 3D BT showed up, not too sure though...............
Edit; looking at this users tear down of a T02 the header and dongle are there for 3D.

Cool. Will just pray or wish me luck if you don't believe in prayer or whatever, that Samsung replaces or repairs my laptop for good this time. I know I am, as I really don't want to rma it again, and would love for it to last me for a few more years. Weird thing is, they lengthened my warranty term. It was going to expire in July, but now it is showing October, so maybe a second repair triggers a 3 month extension? (Which would be really nice, as I thought I would lose my warranty in about 2 months.)
-
@dragonwolf: I know the warranty on my Series 7 Z3A was extended by 3 months when I registered it on Samsung.com. Maybe that's what happened for you.
In any case, that's awfully bad luck with all those repairs. I hope it works out for you this time.
@TANware: Great post! -

@TANware: Thanks for the info there, I'll mention it to my friend and see what he says. Also see if he managed to get 1 that is 3D ready. Your right about the fact it seems not many got the 7870M version. Most of us seem to have the GTX 675M. Oh well. -
Man, the 660M is a beast at that resolution. Let me know how you like that laptop.

Is the AMD Radeon HD 7970m available for purchase. This is driving me crazy, I've been looking everywhere and don't seem to find anything (on the internet). Then when I contact an online agent at Samsung website he tells me that the notebook(3d with 7970m) can be purchased in the US. Since I'm writing this from middle of nowhere (Iceland) I can't exactly drive to Best Buy and talk to sales person. Please if you have any input share with me

And it's going to be a while longer before I get my Samsung back. They have pushed the Estimated repair date from June 4th, to June 10th. Good thing I got the Asus G46VW to keep me, as I would be going crazy, since my laptop is my all in one. Gaming, movies, schoolwork, communication, just about everything really!
A side note, the Asus G46 only cost me $664+ tax at my local Best Buy, for that price I pretty much got a "ultra portable" gaming laptop. I used the quotes with ultra portable as it's not a true ultra portable, but compared to the Samsung or other DTR gaming laptops, the g46 is an ultra portable. lol. Due to the 1366x768 the g46 can play all the games the Samsung could at the same settings and fps, if not better fps. Granted it's lower resolution, but I honestly can't tell the difference with everything pretty maxed out. Honestly, I wouldn't label the G46 as a direct replacement to the Samsung, but if your looking for something portable to complement the Samsung Series 7 Gamer the G46 is a good candidate. I plan on attempting a review of my own on the G46 forums soon.
To prevent side tracking here is a link to the G46 forum I am active on:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/689401-new-14-inch-g-series-notebook.html
That way no one needs to look for it. Keep in mind the price has changed some since initial start of the forum. At the price that I paid though it's a great deal. I couldn't find many laptops in the price range that has the performance that the G46 had. Makes a wonderful complement to the Series 7 Gamer though. -
Hi. Maybe someone here can help me. Got a NP700G7C, with the 675M and 120mhz screen. Sadly, whenever I use I use the 120mhz mode, the laptop starts having black screen issues. For example, if I go from TURBO MODE to another mode, the screen stays black. Only solution, reboot physically. I updated the BIOS, NVIDIA DRIVERS, etc, all drivers up to date, but I keep having the same issue. Instead, with the 60mhz mode, no problem, laptop seems stable. On another note, I see a lot troth ling of the GPU too, in games, and occasionally on the usual programs, internet, videos, etc. Is this model like this usually ?.

And they have pushed my Est Repair date again from June 10th to June 11th now! If I hadn't managed to buy the G46 laptop, I really don't know what I would do! What with school and everything else. I know it's just an extra day, but then shipping it back and everything else now. I really feel like crying as I love the laptop but it's making me hard to love it because of everything bad. (Me having to send it in twice now during my less than 1 year of ownership?)
-
Engadget posted a "what would you change". Asking this after a year seems odd as usually asking it after a few months is better. New platforms were just released so the gamer 7 is now two top tier gpu cycles behind.

That worked. THANKS !!. Im only able to use the 120MHZ MODE on full brightness, good to know.

Will my laptop made it back, safe and sound. It is running like a champ now, I've almost restored all my stuff and have tested it out a little. Let's hope this repair is the final time I need to send it away. As it is a great laptop.
The replaced the motherboard and graphics card according to the Repair Invoice. Happy my Sammy is back, now I'm just hoping it'll stay good for a few years. -

I'm just glad the Sammy is back and running fine. I've been installing software and games all day to the Sammy. Not fun when I have around 300GB of Steam data to copy plus about 100GB of itunes stuff. lol But it's working fine. -
Love the power of these though..........
