Samsung Series 7 Laptops - 15.0" and 15.6" Models (NP700Z4 & NP700Z5)

That just happened to me, I just closed the lid and woke it up from sleep again.

 

Lol, it worked! Any idea why it happens?

 

Connection for DVD drive is sata but i would doubt you could fit another hard drive in there..Motherboard is tiny though..ill post up a picture of it opened up now...

I have been following this thread a bit and I'm really interested in getting this laptop around or after Christmas. One question though, especially for those who have opened it up, do you think it'd be easy to swap out the dvd drive for a blu-ray one? Thanks!

 

In the catalyst control center when I select the skyrim exe and pick high performance then click apply, it defaults back to not assigned. It is doing this for a couple other programs too. Anyone else having this issue?

 

Can no one please reply to if their backlit keyboard was active right away, or if they had to toggle it. And if it's even togglable in some other ways then FN F9 and FN F10... Need to know if I have a faulty machine and should return it.

 

Try opening up the "Easy settings" program, either reset to default, or change the settings in there.

 

Thanks, I did but it didn't help. And I've rebooted the machine between changes just to make sure aswell, but still doesn't work.

Apparently there is a new BIOS version available here.
I have 03FD and the new one is 09FD and according to the filename its from 16.11.2011.

Has someone tried it already?

To be honest, I think it won't come at all...

 

From the pictures, the dvd drive looks so much more bigger than the hard drive. So if you remove that, put in a hdd with a caddy shouldn't it fit? Considering that it can be done with macbook pros

 

I just swapped out the Hitachi 750 gb hard disk for a Samsung 830 SDD and a fresh Windows 7 install from the recovery disc that came with the computer. After installing Windows 7, the Express Cache was not available to the system, so I downloaded all the Samsung software from their site - Easy Settings, Easy Software and Easy Support. After insatlling Easy Settings, I had the oprion to turn Express Cache on.

By the way, the Samsung 830 SSD really smokes! The disk read writes are at 400-500 MB/s. My Windows Experience Index for disk access went upfrom 5.8 to 7.9

 

Maybe it's time to create a thread for Chronos owners? I had to make clean installation of windows7 (those unofficial AMD Catalyst drivers made my screen inactive all the time), and I would use some help with drivers

 

Well here is something I wanted write yesterday but forgot, I actually have now disabled express cache with my Samsung 830 SSD. I started noticing that causally am getting slowdowns on my hard-drive and i have awful lot of files on there. I believe this is something to do with how Samsung ssd handles the garbage on idles and how It will interfere with express cache as Ec will try to map the recent programs for faster acceleration I notice the boot up has slowed down down since i originally installed the ssd. I now have disabled and speeds have gone back about 3-4 seconds. Am still not quite clear about what exactly is happening so anyone has some thoughts please weight in.

The updater downloads the actual bios file, as you can see (also in the BIOS itself) my number is 03FD and the update is 09FD. I tried to update but it doesn't work on my device (no US one), but no error message or something, just no new bios after reboot after the update.

Edit: Finally managed to get it work by disabling "disable execute bit" in the bios.
Nothing obviously new in the first look, so I have to see if I find what the updates are.

 

I tried to optimize each drive with the Samsung Magician tool and could not optimize the Express CacheDrive. Got an error message that the drive does not support TRIM. So the garbage collection in the express cache may be the bottleneck. I'm going to disable Express Cache and see if it makes a difference. Not sure why we need Express Cache when we have such a fast 6 BG/s primary SSD.

I changed the AMD driver to the custom one on this forum, however my screen resolution cannot be changed to native.

Has anyone found a fix yet?

EDIT: Fixed - I used driver sweeper in normal windows.... have to go to safe mode and also if you're using v3.2 or below, download the filter.xml in order to make Intel HD Graphics appear in driver sweeper.

yes silly me that was just updated i have same 03fd version but to be very honest with you am not going try to do update. Bios update is something u dont want to mess around with unless its really need ... something I learned long time ago. Unless I know what exactly the update does I live it for now... if its not broken dont fix it

 

yeah i saw change when i turned off EC and I see no point to have it on... with SSD it makes no sense whatsoever.

well long time ago dell had its famous bios update snafu... and after that i become paranoic about updating bios... everything else is ok.

I'm using the latest 11.11b catalyst driver, and still have the pixelated full-screen Youtube videos.

BUT, here is the (temporary) solution: Go to Testube and turn the HTML 5 feature on.
That's all. This will work on most of the videos.

 

My Lenovo x60 tablet is having getting flickering green screens in YouTube videos. I had to switch to html5 to watch a vid

 

Somebody here said something about calibrating the screen. Can I have some details on that?

 

I borrowed my friends Spyder Color. My screen looks gorgeous now. It definitely made a difference in terms of displaying true colors. The black and whites used to have a blue tint, now it looks much better!

That file can be imported in Windows Color Management.

Try going in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color and see if there's an .icc file created when you ran the calibration utility. Or try looking in the Spyder utilities if you can see the active profile and it's file name...

I didn't follow the news around this laptop for a while but stumbled across a review and searched further for more reviews...and I'm schocked . All reviews say it has a brilliant screen, even one of the best screens around...did Samsung change the display or something? Because the first messages said it has a horrible screen...

 

Personally I think the screen is brilliant. The colors might be off, but I set up spydercolor and it looks as good as my IPS screen. I'm really not sure what everyone's complaining about.

Im certainty not a as computer fluent as many of you are but I have been researching the Series 7 Chronos for weeks.

Like many have pointed out, the Best Buy version is lacking in major features including a slower hard drive, less ram, different graphics card, no bluetooth, and no back lit keyboard.

Also, the version Samsung has listed on their site is not available anywhere in the U.S.. The only place I have see this laptop available is TigerDirect.com. I also learned that this laptop (with the features) is available at Microsoft Retail stores (not online) and there is a 25 % off discount available for it.

One thing to point out though is that the chronos listed on Samsungs website has all of the higher end features then the Best Buy model, but it is lacking WiDi (Intel Wireless display technology). This may not be an important feature to you, but I was looking forward to it.

I contacted Samsung several times regarding this model and the lack of WiDi. I learned that Samsung is "working on that". I asked the rep if the fact that they are "working on the WiDi feature" is slowing it release in retail stores. The rep confirmed that this is the reason why it has not been shipped to retail stores. The rep told me to continue checking for an updated model. I asked when this model would be available and he would not tell me because he didn't want to give me "false expectations".

I don't know if this helps anyone here...and perhaps the information isn't the best, but take it as what it is....a unconfirmed rumor.

Anyone know how the cooling system on the Samsung Series 7 Chronos work? Like where does the air come in and out? I'm planning to buy the notebook but also a cooler for it.
