I think the unit had very bad viewing angles and contrast. But we really should wait for a retail unit to be reviewed.

After reading all 26 pages of this thread I am very interested but still have a few questions.

Is there any idea yet if the slot loading DVD player can be upgraded to a
    Blu-Ray?

Just to confirm the memory and battery and not going to be user upgradable?

The GPU should be able to run most games at least medium settings?

The wifi card is it user upgradeable or stock at least an intel 6230 or 6300?

Looking forward to seeing the heat stress tests on these machines as they are very nice looking, currently looking at this or an ASUS G53 as they ones I'm looking at are within $100 or each other.

Yea I have a suspicion that they are scrapping it. Hopefully it's just a case where it will be released later or something. They may also only release it in select markets.

I thought it was strange they had a 15.6" and a 15" model. Redundant. 13/14/15.6 and a separate 17" gaming model is plenty good enough.

Not really. For some, including me, the 15" was ideal. Also you're a bit confused. There is only a 15.6 and 14 if you're going by screen size (and assuming the 15" is scrapped). There's no 13" screen model

    Damn!

15" with a 14" body was just perfect!

Yes the 14" sounds good but the video card is a disapointement

I think they made a mistake.

If you click on both 15.6", if you check the title of the page (tab):
    -Series 7 15.6" Notebook ...
    -Series 7 Business 15" Notebook ...

Also if you compare the specs, they are both identical, same CPU, same RAM, same Videocard, same size, same weigth...

I might go with the MSI X460, 14", 0.87" thin and 4.35lb, GT540M. Even the 14" is thicker than the msi, even if it's in a 13" body. And a 400$ difference.

I'm really looking forward to the 15.6" model. I've been using the MBP in my sig for a few days, and I love it with Windows 7. They should be comparable in size.

Looks nice, but the screen is only 1366x768 :(

6490m rather than 6470m, the 14" is looking pretty tempting if the build quality is up to scratch.....

it's still a crappy card. How come MSI can put a GT540 into the x460 which is thinner than the samsung 14" and Samsung a 6470?

I wonder if they will have manual graphics switching drivers like HP implemented? I find that solution preferable to what the optimus enable notebooks have to endure. Or I hope they put a manual switch on it like the Sony Vaio SA. I want to choose what card is being used.

I was hoping for a 3 year warranty, like on Series 6 and Series 9.... But I guess that for machines ranging from $1k to $1.3K with otherwise impressive specs, I was hoping the impossible.... Will have to get an in-store warranty to bridge me to 3 years once I get one of these babies.

People, let's calm down. Wait until more thorough reviews are done by the tech blogs. I have a good feeling about Samsung. Unlike HP, their plan isn't just to roll out a cheap MBP copycat. They've gone ahead by creating a slightly differing design identity, shrunken down the bezel, really improved the touchpad (based on initial reviews, but even so, how many full multitouch PC touchpads are out there these days?), and introduced a higher-res LCD.

I like Samsung's products. Their after-sales support still kind of sucks , but as a semi-geek, I am well-informed enough to buy a warranty from Square Trade.

Sumsung killed the 14" with such a low end graphics card. Really pisses me off. Was waiting for this to come out and the MSI X460DX that I just returned would have been the better choice now that I know that Samsung acted like morons with their graphics card choice.

Really a terrible card. The soldered ram is also a dealbreaker for me.

AMD Radeon HD 6490M???? F*ck you Samsung.

We don't know. Samsung hasn't gave out any information. My guess is they killed it off or will release it later. Seems like too much confusion for the consumer to me anyways. After all considering the size and weight of it, I want that extra screen size and number pad.

I agree. Apple puts Samsung lcd panels in their laptops and they are top notch. I believe Samsung will want this to be their flagship laptop and will put the best in it. I have high hopes in Samsung, it looks like they are going to be a company that actually cares about design like Apple. Instead of this cheap crap Dell & HP put out.

If the display in the Chronos will be as good as the Macbook Pro 15 matte one, then this laptop is all I could ask for. I'm just a little worried about the poor contrast and gamut of the 15.6" 1600x900 display in an existing Samsung laptop model. But I agree, they should have improved the display significantly for the series 7.
Not so long now before first reviews should appear.

BTW, does Samsung use AMD reference drivers, as opposed to brand specific drivers that Sony uses for AMD switchable graphics? After reading a recent Anandtech article it appears that a Sony laptop with switchable AMD graphics is not something to consider buying, due to Sonys inability to maintain and release new drivers.

i think one of them is w/o numpad, samsung needs to update the pics and this is because of the price difference that everybody is wondering why is so high between the 2 15.6'' models(considering the memory price for 2gb):
    - 15-inch display fitts inside a 14-inch laptop profile and a 15.6-inch display fitts inside the 15-inch model.

Here are the official pages for the 15.6" models:

    http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/laptops/NP700Z5A-S01US

    http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/laptops/NP700Z5A-S02US

According to the official specs, the highest end "business" machine uses Windows 7 HP like the lower end models, rather than the Professional version. On the other hand, I have found official Samsung web pages to be occasionally unreliable.

The HD 6490 in the 14" is an awful graphics card. Incredibly underpowered for 1600X900 resolution

This was a horrible choice by Samsung and it really pisses me off they did this.

I know.. if the 14" had the same gpu as 15.6", it would have been perfect... 15.6" with numpad is a little big.. and there still isn't a word on the 15" model yet.. there are no pre-orders on it anywhere and it may have been scrapped..i jus cant imagine a 15.6" cos its jus too big..

Looks like its scrapped to me samsung.com just showing 14" and 15.6" under shop our series 7 selection.

Pity...However having said that the 15.6" is still slightly smaller and lighter than the macbook pro which is a good size already for a 15.6"

Im sticking to the slightest hope that they will release the 15" later on in the upcoming months...it doesn't sound right when they announced the models at IFA 2011 jus couple of weeks back..why would they scrap it all of sudden?? ..whatever the case is, Samsung is totally confusing all of us..

They could have at least added a 6630 to the 14" model. Even the Sony Vaio SA and Envy 14 have that GPU is a smaller chassis. But the 15.6 model is still in a 15" chassis so that wont be too bad.

I wonder how hot these things will get though. The heat dissipation on these notebooks worry me. Its thinner than a macbook pro and they get very hot when gaming.

When you say it's underpowered for the resolution you mean in terms of playing games correct? I was planning on purchasing the $949 15.6" with HD 6490, but will the graphics card limit the computer's performance on tasks such as DVD playback? I don't play much games and if I do they're not very memory intensive.

    Anyone can answer this.

Think I will be going for the Sony SA with 6630m, Although I really wanted the samsung 14" but that graphics card truly is woeful. Or MSI 460DX with GT540m.

DVD playback will be fine. Performance will be good apart from gaming with that card. Real shame they picked that card.

    150 seem like a lot for 4 gb stick;;;;

is win7 pro worth paying extra?
