To those worried that their CPU/GPU combo will be obsolete for gaming, just remember you're buying the notebook for more than just that. Based on just initial reviews, it looks to me Samsung learned from the HP Envy 2nd gen's failures and really paid attention to details. It invested in better screens, a true multitouch keyboard (if it's anything like the 9 Series'), a thinner bezel, a tough-looking aluminum chassis, fast boot-up times, a webcam that auto-dims to adjust for room light, and better specs. Good specs are just one out of several reasons to get this notebook. For $1,149, you're getting all thee goodies! I'm pretty sure Samsung will discount the first generation to encourage the early buyers to buy and encourage other buyers to buy them through word of mouth. Further discounts might even be offered to account for specs that are sure to become obsolete as newer GPUs and CPUs are released.

On another note, I do hope the batteries can be made to stop charging as I wouldn't want to waste 1000+ recharge cycles when I'm plugged in. Maybe the feature such as those on Alienwares (BIOS/Fn keys) would be nice.

I don't think this is a big worry. Samsung, like most manufacturers of current notebooks, don't keep charging a battery that is permanently on the mains. And if you don't need all the battery capacity there's probably an option to restrict the charging to 80% - there's no reason to expect this feature on other recent Samsung naotebooks would be left off the Series 7.

Pre-order is back up on Amazon again.

    Samsung NP700Z5A-S01US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Silver) *8GB RAM
    Samsung NP700Z5A-S02US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Silver) *6GB RAM

$150 for 2GB RAM ... ouch. (and one chip is soldered to board)

In any case - my order is in. I will post benchmark results. I remain unsure of whether I can stick a M4 in the machine and/or if I can physically if the connection is SATA III.

It's the 4gb stick thats soldered the 2gb or 4gb is swappable.
Anyways 6 or 8 gigs doesnt really affect performance unless you're using bbq apps.

Any more information on the 6750M? I assume this Samsung will get the faster GDDR5 memory as used in the Macbook Pro? It would really suck if this notebook gets the lame and slow DDR3 version.

So it's the 15,6" not the 15" but if you look at the laptop left to the price, there is no numpad...

I thought that it was 14", 15" (no numpad) and 15.6" (with numpad)

If it says it's the 15.6" then it's the 15.6". The one shot without the numpad is of the 14" but it must be there by mistake

Interesting. I really like the sound of this laptop on paper spec wise but, maybe I shouldn't jump the gun so early. I'm still really worried about how this system is going to handle heat since I don't see a lot of places for it to vent out heat.

Has anyone heard anything about timing for the 17" Series 7 laptops (or more ideally, have a link to pre-order)? Thus far I've only seen the AMZN and TigerDirect pre-orders for the 15.6 model.

    Thank you!

Samsung Series 7 gaming laptop has HD 6970M, backlit keys - TechSpot News

Launching in international markets shortly, with both standard and 3D "direct view" (i.e., no glasses req, or at least that's what I've seen in a few write ups) versions.

Just looking to see if anyone has insights beyond the standard industry press on when this might hit the US.

    Thx!

I was gonna say this thread isn't for that but technically the thread title doesn't specify Samsung Series 7 Chronos. We could talk about the Series 7 Gamer and slate as well I suppose. Though that wasn't the intent.

I would check the Samsung facebook page for possible release date on the Gamer.

You buy laptop in Canada unless you want to pay huge amount of taxes and duty fee.

    But!

You buy laptop from an online store in Canada to pay less. Lower price, lower taxes.

This seems to be a slow thread.

But I'm really excited for the release!

Still deciding on the 15" with the 6750, or the Samsung Series 7 Tablet and the sexy pen.

I already have the Asus transformer, so I may get the 15" so I can game a bit.

What I don't understand is why samsung didn't announce the 15in screen in their press release... I get that there is one as many can see from the pictures but on the official press release it only lists the 14in and 15.6in

Maybe the 15in is only for the korean market?

Idk id perfer the 15 but just jumped the gun and preordered the 15.6 off amazon

I'm extremely intrigued by this computer. Initially I thought about getting the 14" because of the 13" case, but now I'm leaning toward the 15.6" with the full numpad. Awaiting some test results before I order the thing, though.

    A 15.6in model using a 15in case and a 14in model using a 13in case.

Has anyone found any specs on the type of DVD-RW slot loading drive in these models? 12.7 mm or 9.5mm? I ask because Id like to be able to swap it out with a Blu-Ray drive, but slot-loading Blu-Ray drives only come in 12.7mm at the moment.

Also, anyone think the hard drive will be able to be replaced by a SSD drive?

I'm sure more info will be available upon release, but any and all info is truly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

on fb they have a samsung rep for the series 7, they said that the release date will be in mid nov in canada. Still waiting for actual resellers.

I'm not sure I can wait that long, I might need to make a trip to the states to grab one haha. Oct 2 vs Mid nov, month and a half wait seems too long, especially considering i'll need it on oct.

Any idea if best buy warrenties work across the boarder? Will best buy even carry this machine in the states?

That what I was thinking, but usually they will say International warrenty to "number of countries", but make sure you read the fine print because some people got screwed when they found out after they brought it the warrenty was different.

Newegg and Tigerdirect will probably get the US version at about the same time. (I hope)

I hope it's not the same panel either. Same resolution and same advertised brightness. They market the 7-series as a higher-end notebook (Hence, the 7 being a higher number) and name the monitor the "Superior LCD."

Yeah but isn't the Series 4 notebooks suppose be their business line, hence the blue trackpoint/nub? From what I have seen from HP and Lenovo is, their business models generally offer a matte display vs their consumer counterparts, which is generally glossy(an in their higher end business models high quality TN or IPS display). Not sure how this would translate to the Series 7 as this is also matte. Hmmm

Both have matte displays, yes. What I'm hoping is Samsung chose a much brighter, higher-quality display for the Series 7. Their decision to do so will deter me from choosing a Macbook for my next notebook.

My worry is Samsung will may not be able to command the same kind of component pricing power Apple does with the kind of scale of economics the Macbook's demand offers. But at the same time, it helps that Samsung is a vertically integrated manufacturing giant. I don't have the details, but I believe hey have control over the supply and quality of many of the components that go into computers. If it's the case have dedicated plants for notebook LCD displays and have the means for churning out higher gamut screens at reasonably low prices, there may be hope yet. There's no guarantee Samsung won't look to Chimei or AUO for notebook displays. But do have have significant control over smartphoe, TV, and desktop monitor displays!

I think the 14" model is the one that's selling for $999, so maybe it's supposed to be the "budget" version? Although I don't know why it comes with 8gb of RAM in that case.

Acer's Timeline/TimelineX series, up until the latest refresh, was like this too. They didn't release the -tg models with dedicated graphics in the US, even though they did everywhere else.

Come on, Samsung. Don't be that silly one-hit wonder HP was with the 1st gen Envy 14. Don't give up this market to Apple! You have what it takes. You have cash, you have massive manufacturing clout and R&D power. You have access to all sorts of display technologies. 2011 and beyond is your time to shine.
