I don't really care about a slightly warm keyboard or palmrest as long as its below body temperature., I'm more concerned about the components lifetime if they heat up and down 90°+ all the time theres a load.

Cpus can handle those high temperatures if not intel would throttle them at a lower temp than they do.

Anyways, really looking forward to the reviews. Heat, noise, and screen especially.

The problem isn't whether or not a CPU can handle high temperatures. We've had proper throttling since the P4 era. The question is whether or not all those little solder joints can handle the heat and expansion/constriction (think the nVidia issue from a few years ago) over the course of the life of the laptop (along with the various stress points, like hinges).

I'd rather lower TDPs with reasonable hardware appropriate to the platform. If I have to do computationally/graphically intensive work (or just some serious gaming), it will be on my desktop. And if a desktop isn't an option, I wouldn't be relying on a thin and light consumer grade laptop.

At some point, common sense has to kick in.

i cant wait to get my hands on the 14" model....i can understand why some of you are complaining about the gpu in the 14 but for 50 bucks more you can have a bigger screen for gaming and the better gpu...not too bad really and the whole body is already pretty slim and light...

the 14" model is obviously going after the 13" MBP which has no discrete gpu anyways so its a definite win in my book...oct 2nd cant come soon enough!

I am not pushing the MSI. I bought one and returned it because I hated the screen. The X460DX is does not have glossy palmrests or a glossy case. The bezel is glossy and there is a tiny silver frame around the touchpad that is glossy.

I was really looking forward to the Series 7 and still may buy it because, for me, screen is slightly more important than the GPU. I just never imagined the GPU would be such a huge trade-off. It is worse than the 520 which is as entry level as a 2011 laptop should have.

YOu could have clicked my link for the evidence. Or gone to the Lenovo owner's forum on their own website and read the discussion threads about the X220 their most popular laptop.

Or google "Laptop reliability ratings" and read some of the ratings from the last 5 years.

    Lenovo is mediocre.

And "business grade" never meant "more reliable than other manufacturers" it means we will charge you $1800 for a $1200 laptop with an extended warranty. Instead of $1200 for a laptop and $200 for an extended warranty.

    Havent been following the thread.

So the 14" has the 15" screen with NO numberpad right? Also what is the display on the 14" model? Is it the same high res as the 15.6?

Are you kidding me? Do you see a metallic roll cage in Lenovo's Ideapad line, or on site warranty service the very next day?

Back on topic; from the pictures it made it seem like the 14in screen model seems to be lacking USB 3.0. I know a few said that it will have it, but is that really the case, because the pics I saw was lacking the blue USB port.

I also had higher hopes for the CPU and GPU on the 14". The ASUS U36 then seems like a better option. Sure it don't have an optical drive but it's only 19mm and 1.6kg with the 8cell battery.

More like GDDR5. And it should be, otherwise a DDR3 memory on the 6750M's 128 bit bus just wouldn't cut it for games and such.

6490 in Samsung vs 320M in U36SD, they are pretty much the same

    12.80" x 0.93" x 8.90" VS 12.9" x 0.76" vs 9.28"

So you get an almost equal graphic card in a slimmer body (0.76" vs 0.93")

I think what everybody means here is why other laptop maker can put a equal or better graphic card in a more cramped space...

What people fail to mention is that both the msi x460dx and the u36 heat up rapidly even without gaming (previous owner of the 460dx). Samsung could have crammed a better graphics card but wisely put a less intensive card not to burn your hands or lap

So this laptop is available for preorder right now? Since Tigerdirect ships to Canada, it's not a worry. But oddly enough, when I asked a Samsung rep last week, he said he had no idea when the Series 7 was to be released. I'm confused :S

Does Samsung or any other other retailer that have this notebook up for order, offer student discounts to those who have an edu. account?

So far this notebook is looking good with only a few concerns:

Quality of Display - not just the brightness, but the contrast/viewing angles.
Quality of Sound - at least some bass and reasonable sound volume.
Palmrest and Underside Material Used - as long as it does not wear down, does not look cheap and helps dissipate excess heat.

Otherwise, waiting for the first reviews to come out!

I know Dell gives you a discount for .edu but if you just look for discount coupons online they are better than the student discount usually.

THe U36SD has the current generation i5 and the 520GT.

I owned the X460DX and my girlfriend owns a U36SD.

The U36 is light slim and sexy. Really amazing for the weight. Screen is ok. No heat issues.

The X460DX was outstanding, if they had but in a better screen or offered a screen upgrade I would think it is the best laptop under 4 1/2 lbs in the world right now. Heat issues are bull. It did not have heat issues as long as you did not block the vents.

    I just hated the screen.

The Samsung could easily have put in at least a 520GT class GPU in the 14".

It was a complete failure that they didn't.

I have to buy my laptop this month because I am going overseas for a year and Samsung was my last hope manufactures would get their heads out of their asses and pair a decent screen with a decent processor and a decent video card for under 4.5lbs.

I am absolutely SHOCKED nobody has done this yet. It is possible.

    Definitely possible. And truly disappointing.

I'd very much prefer to have a business line laptop and use an eGPU option. Intel HD 3000 graphics should suffice for work-related productivity. Using an eGPU opens doors to use your computer as a gaming rig when docked.

Personal preferences aside, I was really looking for a diamond in the Series 7. A little disappointed, but nothing I didn't see coming.

Anyone else notice the best buy one has a 5400 rpm drive and amazon is 7200? Hmmm, I still think I would be better getting it from bb and upgrading the drive in the near future for the 200$ difference.

I really can't wait for the release guys!!! It's about a week left and like most of you mentioned, a lot of these tech blog sites are probably gonna release reviews this week.

Very curious about that fellow who pre-ordered from Best Buy and might be lucky enough to get his tomorrow. Would love to hear what he's got to say upon unboxing and preliminary usage.

I hope they really don't push through with that whole exclusivity sales-channel of Best Buy maintaining all brick-and-mortar sales for the first month. That just limits options and possibilities for better deals with less retailers supplying the product.

Given this, I've got high hopes with Amazon releasing this baby on time, and with the specs I want for the 15.6 incher (including 7200 RPM HD, express cache, and more video memory).

My only concerns (which I wish to be clarified in reviews) are the speaker quality (I'm not expecting much from those 3W speakers), the actual battery life, and the mic/headphone combo. I really do wish they separated the mic and headphone inputs since I do audio recording and make use of both at the same time in certain situations for live monitoring.

Also, a last point I wanted to bring up was with the battery. I will be very impressed with Samsung if the battery life lives up to their claims, and our expectations.

According to this battery info page on Apple's site, "The built-in battery of your MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air is designed to deliver up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity."

Comparing this to Samsung's claims with the Series 7, "This technology retains 80% of the original battery capacity for up to 1,500 charges."

So Samsung could beat Apple's battery life by 500 charges.

Just wanted to highlight another impressive feature of this awesome forthcoming machine!

although the video shows the 15" (screen) it is always referred to as the 14", not the Chronos 7 14.

is this just a case of the samsung marketing fellow not knowing the difference?
